Director of Sales and Marketing of Fortress Builders Colby Henson is in studio on today's episode of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio. Co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick are joined by Henson to discuss several communities in the works and ready for sale by Fortress Builders. Fortress Builders is a business composed of local builders and developers in Cobb County. With a combined experience of over 50 years, Fortress Builders is no stranger to the home building industry. Fortress started off developing downtown Marietta, and eventually expanded to several other metro Atlanta areas, including Kennesaw and Acworth. “Our core concentration has been in Cobb County,” said Henson. “We live, work and spend our money there, so it seemed like a good place to put our product and build houses to create a sense of community to see as we drive around in our own neighborhoods.” Fortress Builders creates a wide variety of homes but has focused on active adult communities for the past few years. Mount Calvary, a 55+ active adult community currently in the works, is located in Marietta and will consist of 41 homes, a clubhouse with gym, private walking trail and a community fireside area upon completion. Located off Mount Calvary Road, this community is priced from the high $400,000s and offers its residents everything from unique amenities to a superb location. Another active adult community by Fortress Builders is Barrett Preserve. This 55+ community is priced from the $300,000s and is composed of 41 homesites. Barrett Preserve offers a cozy fireside pavilion, as well as easy access to retail shopping, grocery stores, restaurants and retail all around Town Center Mall and Marietta Square. This community is also only minutes from Kennesaw Mountain for anyone looking to utilize the extensive trail systems and historical sites. Barrett Preserve is currently in the closeout phase and only has four opportunities left. Fortress Builders is also building near the East-West Connector only minutes from Vinings, Smyrna, I-285 and SunTrust Park. Peacock Park is another fabulously located Cobb County community priced from the $300,000s. The homes at Peacock Park offer rich interior amenities including quartz or granite countertops, tile baths, extensive hardwood flooring and covered patios. In releasing his latest album, Two Lane Town, JD Shelburne feels he has recorded the album that could take him to a whole new level. “I’ve been working really hard on this album. I think it is my best collection of songs that I’ve released thus far,” he says of his fourth project. He says that he’s definitely learned a lot since he released his first disc that was self-titled, back in 2012. “It’s all about writing and recording great songs,” he says. “It all boils down to just a great lyric. I try to write/record songs that I can relate to, ones that are catchy and have a great melody that I feel my fans can relate.” Of the tracks from the new album, JD says there’s one in particular that has a special place in his heart. “I co-wrote a song on the record called ‘Born For This.’ It’s the first song on the record, and it talks about picking up guitar and adapting to a new venture in life while attending college and just running with it – I was nineteen when my grandmother passed away. My life turned around in an instant when I found that guitar after her death. I didn’t realize until early in college that music was my true passion in life. I had played three different sports growing up, and just led the simple small-town life. I picked up the guitar, and my life hasn’t been the same since. It’s kind of the title track of my life. When I was about to finish college, there was a point when I realized I was about to be an adult and wondered what I was going to do with my life. Where I was going to go? I honestly felt like I was born to play music and entertain people. It was just something that I gravitated towards naturally. Nashville, Tennessee was my next destination and I haven’t looked back since.” J.D began that gravitation while growing up on a tobacco farm in Taylorsville, KY, a tiny town southeast of the Ohio River near Louisville KY. At age 19, he found a guitar after the death of his grandmother and began learning to play and sing on his own. By his sophomore year of college, he had found a few gigs at some local bars in the Louisville/Lexington, KY area and developed a fan-base that eventually landed him on some of the biggest stages in the business, opening for some of the nation’s hottest stars. Eventually, Shelburne was adding original songs into the set mix, in addition to producing songs of his own material. In 2002, Kentucky fell in love at first sight with Shelburne, then a college student and a small-town kid with a wide smile, natural singing voice and a love of faith, family and his hometown of Taylorsville, KY. But that small-town image is merely a fond memory now that he has moved on to Nashville down the path to music stardom. Now find him soaking up the music scene, touring cities, building a fan-base and celebrating a decade of success playing venues all across the southeast trying to get his big break. Today he’s among the most hardworking and relevant country singers in the business. They say Nashville doesn’t work that way anymore – that talented musicians with very few connections don’t stand a chance. But Shelburne proved that Music City’s engine still runs off of talent and persistent driven antics. Critics find him credible. Fans pack his shows. Venues strive to book him. There are very few new artists recording songs today about whom that can be said. During his whirlwind career explosion, he has performed with over 50 national acts ranging from stars such as Montgomery Gentry, Craig Morgan, Jamey Johnson, Kellie Pickler, Steve Wariner to Clay Walker and Johnny Lee, performed at some of the region’s most famous venues such as the Historic Ryman Auditorium, Rupp Arena, Murphy Center, KFC Yum Center, Freedom Hall, Churchill Downs and Old Cardinal Stadium which recently drew the Kentucky State Fair’s largest crowd of the concert series. JD performed “God Bless America” prior to the 2016 Quaker State 400 NASCAR race at Kentucky Speedway to over 100,000 attendees. In September 2017, JD made his NBC Network Television Debut performing the National Anthem at the NASCAR XS Myrtle Beach 300! He has also been featured in Country Weekly Magazine, Kentucky Alumni Magazine, Kentucky Monthly Magazine amongst many other national publications including the Huffington Post. His debut music video “Farmboy” gained him thousands of new fans by airing on the TNN Top Ten Countdown nationwide on Heartland TV network and ZUUS Country Network. In 2015, he made his Nationwide debut on GAC – Great American Country Network and also CMT.com in October with his second music video entitled “Hometown” written about the demise of his small town. On October 21, 2015, JD debuted as #1 trending artist on CMT.com edging out Taylor Swift, Luke Bryan, and Jason Aldean! He has performed over 2,000 concerts all over the southeast as well as over 300 festivals. JD’s outfits have been featured on display at the Kentucky Derby Museum at Historic Churchill Downs from his appearances at the Kentucky Derby. In 2016, he was invited to perform in the Kentucky State Capitol for the State Senate as well as the House of Representatives where he performed his own rendition of “My Old Kentucky Home” for both parties. JD was named an Honorable Kentucky Colonel and was also presented the honor of “Admiral” by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Also, in 2016, the University of Kentucky’s College of Communication and Information named JD their 2016 Most Outstanding Alumnus! On September 18, 2018, he made his World Premiere on CMT! In June 2017, Shelburne launched his world premiere official music video for “Better Man” that was filmed in Midway/ Millville, KY. The music video made its Network Television Debut on Great American Country (GAC) on June 23, 2017, and is currently in Nationwide rotation. At the 2017 Kentucky Derby, Shelburne was a guest chef of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives host Guy Fieri at his restaurant alongside Guy, Travis Tritt and NFL Legend Jerry Rice! Shelburne, most recently reached #29 on the Music Row chart with his debut single of “One Less Girl”. The single lead him to features on CMT and reaching over 120,000 views online! His follow-up single “She Keeps Me Up Nights” will impact radio this summer and has already reached #6 on the CMT 12-Pack Countdown! JD also has performed at several prestigious nationwide events: NBA Basketball Games, Guaranteed Rate Field for the Chicago White Sox, Suntrust Park for the Atlanta Braves, The Kentucky Derby, Unbridled Eve Derby Gala, Barnstable Brown Derby Gala, events for Jim Beam Brands and Four Roses Bourbon, NCAA Division I College Football/Basketball Games, The National FFA Organization National Convention, Omni Hotels & Resorts, Marriott Hotel Brands, NASCAR Racing Events, Minor League Baseball Games, Dollar General NASCAR Racing Team Event, CMA Music Festival, the NCAA Women’s Final Four, SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament and more! As you can imagine, the road is a place where he loves to be. “I rarely take days off. I performed 230 tour dates last year, and in 2016, I performed 246. I have always taken nearly every opportunity given to me that is within a reasonable distance. I have a relative in the family that was a Country artist back in the 1970s, and his name was Guy Shannon. He had a couple of charted singles and played the Opry several times. He told me before I moved to Nashville, ‘You’ll never get discovered in a basement. Anytime you can get a gig somewhere, take it and run with it. I have taken that advice and used it tremendously. I play shows just about everywhere. I’ve been in the business ten years, and I’m still hungry,” he says eagerly J.D. has high hopes and expectations for the new music. “I want to try to get on a national tour and spread my music and my name to places I’ve never played. I think I’ve got some great songs on this record, and I think so many fans will relate and be drawn to this new album. I still have a lot of ground to cover and I don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.”

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alfredo-villasmil/message

Tillbaka i The Battery, området som bäddar in SunTrust Park i sportbarer, merchandise och grillrök. Take it away!!

Review of The newest MLB stadium in Atlanta, Georgia
One-in-six people live in a food insecure environment and 40 percent of the food produced in the country is never consumed, that is 165 Billion dollars! If food waste were a corporation on the Fortune 500 list, it would rank right after General Motors. With this information in mind, Joe Labriola, Executive Director of Second Helpings Atlanta joins us on today's Around Atlanta episode to talk about the hunger and food waste epidemic in Atlanta and explain the simple, yet highly effective food rescue program that the non-profit oversees. Prior to joining Second Helpings Atlanta in May 2015, Labriola was the Vice President of Product Marketing at PGi, the Chief Marketing Officer at Enterprise Information Management and spent 30 years at IBM before he retired in November 2010. Labriola states that somewhere along the corporate career path he realized this was just not feeding his soul and it was time for Career 2.0. When a job posting for Second Helping's first ever Executive Director crossed his path, he knew he had to take. Second Helpings Atlanta is a non-profit food rescue organization whose mission is to reduce hunger and food waste in the metropolitan Atlanta area by rescuing healthy, nutritious, surplus food and delivering it to those in need. In 2018, the nonprofit had a hugely successful year and also went through a rebranding process. They conducted over 8,000 food rescues, meaning volunteers rescued nearly 1.4 million nutritious meals and raised the level of awareness so high that they helped fuel their expansion by 22 new donors. Since its launch in 2004, Second Helpings Atlanta's network now includes more than 80 Food Donors, 45 Partner Agencies and over 450 volunteer drivers. Volunteers at Second Helpings Atlanta rescue nutritious, perishable food (dairy, deli, bakery, produce) and prepared food from over 80 Food Donors and deliver it (free of charge) to a network of over 45 Partner Agencies (food pantries, community meal providers, shelters) who feed the hungry every day. “We use something we developed called our 90 Minute Model, where we connect our volunteers with routes that get them from their home, place of work or worship to a nearby Food Donors, using their own vehicle, where they pick up donated food, transport and deliver it to a Partner Agency and return home in 90 minutes or less,” explains Labriola. “We believe this process gives our 450+ volunteers a high impact volunteer experience that has a low impact on their busy schedules.” A unique aspect of Second Helpings efforts is that they focus exclusively on healthy, nutritious food because many of the clients of the Partner Agencies are surviving on diets consisting mostly of processed food which can contribute to serious health issues later in life. Additionally, Labriola states, “Because the food we deliver is free of charge, money previously spent to purchase groceries can be re-diverted into providing more core services, allowing our Partner Agencies to make a bigger impact in the community without the need to raise more money.” During the interview, Labriola states some astonishing facts about highly complex food rescues from large scale event venues such as Mercedes Benz Stadium and SunTrust Park. He also mentions that Second Helpings Atlanta was one of three organizations selected by the NFL to do a food rescue during the events that lead up to the Super Bowl. Tune in now with the podcast link above to hear how many thousands of pounds of food was rescued just from large scale event venues! NICK WALKER: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. It's our every-other-week opportunity to talk about what matters to you, whether your project is a multiyear, multimillion dollar venture, or a short-term undertaking with a small budget. We want to give you some principles that will work for you wherever you find yourself on the spectrum. And we do that by talking to people who, like you, find themselves taking the lead on projects big and small. I'm your host, Nick Walker, and with me are a couple of guys who are always thinking big, Andy Crowe and Bill Yates. Andy, today we're going to get an insider's view on a project that has already made a mark on America's pastime. We're talking baseball. ANDY CROWE: Yeah, this is an interesting one for me, Nick. It's always interesting to see, get insight into a project that's different than anything I've ever managed. And so I'm thankful to have our guest, Chris Britton, today. And, by the way, Happy Thanksgiving to our listeners. NICK WALKER: Well, let's meet him. Chris Britton is Division Manager at Brasfield and Gorrie, one of the largest privately held construction firms in the nation. The company has built its reputation on a variety of types of projects, from commercial to educational, aerospace to governmental. It's a company that prides itself on giving back to the community. Among the projects they've been involved in are the Georgia Aquarium Dolphin Expansion and Sea Lion Exhibit, the College Football Hall of Fame and Chick-fil-A Fan Experience, and the Emory Sports Medicine Complex. One of its most recent projects was the two-and-a-half-year-long construction of the new home for the Atlanta Braves baseball team, SunTrust Park. Chris, it's a pleasure to have you here on Manage This. CHRIS BRITTON: It's great to be here. NICK WALKER: Well, let me run through a few statistics on SunTrust Park; okay? I'm sure you're familiar with all these: over one million square feet, 41,500 seats, 4,000 club seats, 32 premium suites totaling 144,000 square feet, three club lounges, four seating decks with 90-foot overhangs, 10 escalators, 14 elevators, and that's not the half of it. This was, in many observers' eyes, at least a five-year project, maybe more. It was finished in 29 months. CHRIS BRITTON: That's correct. NICK WALKER: How did that happen? CHRIS BRITTON: It happens in 29 months with a lot of planning; right? So early on in the process Mike Plant, the Atlanta Braves, they hired Populous as the Architect. Populous has a number of consultants that are part of their project team. We were brought onboard as the construction manager, and we're actually – it wasn't just Brasfield and Gorrie. We formed a four-way joint venture which was American Builders 2017, which is Brasfield and Gorrie, Mortenson, Barton Malow, and New South. We brought four different companies together to be able to build the job. We got involved early on in the design process. ANDY CROWE: I want to ask you there, you brought four companies together. But what was your company's role? What was Brasfield and Gorrie's role in managing or working with those other companies? CHRIS BRITTON: Yeah, we were the managing partner, so we were in charge of the joint venture. ANDY CROWE: I guess that's a fun place to be. I'm a big fan of the model of one head to pat and one butt to kick. So you were the one head, and the other end of the equation, as well. CHRIS BRITTON: That's right, that's right. So back to the question. So we got involved early on in the design process of the project. And Populous, they actually had a pretty big challenge ahead of them because they had a very short period of time to be able to design the project. And as soon as they started putting those conceptual designs together, we had to start putting costs together on it. And as those drawings went from conceptual all the way up th...
ANDY CROWE ● BILL YATES ● NICK WALKER ● MIKE PLANT NICK WALKER: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. Every couple of weeks we reserve this time to meet together and discuss the things that matter most to you in this diverse and ever-changing realm of project management. We want to support you, embolden you, reassure you, and maybe even light a fire in areas that have grown cold. And we do that by exploring the experiences of others who have been where you are or are there right now. I'm your host, Nick Walker, and with me are the two guys who fill the room with experience, Andy Crowe and Bill Yates. Andy, if our listeners are into sports, teams, leadership, our guest today is the guy they want to hear from. ANDY CROWE: We're bringing it all together today, aren't we, Nick. This is going to be a good ‘cast. NICK WALKER: Well, let's meet our guest. Mike Plant is in his 14th season with the Atlanta Braves organization, his second season as President of Development. He's been instrumental in establishing a new home for the team at the newly opened SunTrust Park and its adjacent development, The Battery Atlanta. Before he joined the Braves organization, Mike was Executive Vice President of Turner Sports. He managed the Goodwill Games, has helped organize various phases of the Olympic Games, and serves on numerous committees and boards for the U.S. Olympic Committee. A former Olympian himself, Mike Plant was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic speedskating team, and continues to lead speedskating and cycling organizations in this country and internationally. Mike, it is a privilege to have you here on Manage This. Thanks for joining us. MIKE PLANT: Thank you, thank you. NICK WALKER: You bring a lot of experience to the table, and we want to get into some of that. But I'm guessing that that kind of experience is probably sort of a prerequisite for all that's involved in building, not only this new stadium, but the adjacent shops and restaurants and parking facilities. That kind of project could probably overwhelm a lesser human. MIKE PLANT: Yeah, well, my dad told me a long time ago, don't become a legend in your own mind. So I try to keep that in perspective. But, you know, if I look back on my athletic career and all the things I did after that in the world of sport, young people ask me, what's the one word that you think would define who you are and where you got your drive from? And I think it's really – it's perseverance. It's understanding how to persevere through some very challenging times, daily or project-wise, and don't lose sight of what the ultimate objective is. And so, I mean, you'll get there. And if you have to jump over, go under, push over, go on the side of the hurdle, just there's a way to get to the end. And if you can align all the people that are with you to understand sort of that philosophy, have fun while you're doing it, work hard while you're doing it, but persevere through some tough times. You'll get to the end, and you'll accomplish what you set out to do. NICK WALKER: Well, most recently, how did you end up in the position that you're in right now, the President of Development? MIKE PLANT: Well, I mean, fortunately, I'm one of those individuals, and I try to also tell young people this, is you've got to find something you wake up every day and kind of pinch yourself and say, I can't believe they actually pay me to do this. So if you can do that in your life, and when you set out on your career path, that obviously is something I've been fortunate to accomplish. I mean, I transcended from my field-of-play athletic career into a world of sport, way back when it was in its infancy. I mean, I sold my first sponsorship deal in 1980 when I'm 21 years old, banging out a proposal on my mom and dad's electric typewriter with Wite-Out. But I knocked down $375,000 from the Atari Corporation,
