Acts 10:44-481 John 5:1-6John 15:9-17Psalm 98The CollectO God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The First LessonActs 10:44-48While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Matthew 8:13-17Jesus comes into Peter's house. Jesus touches Peter's mother-in-law. Jesus drives out evil spirits and heals the sick with a word. The Spirit of Jesus is defined by a movement to be planted as a Seed in the soil of our lives. Leitura do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo João 20,11-18 Naquele tempo, 11Maria estava do lado de fora do túmulo, chorando. A quem procuras?” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/amigocatolico/message

When we spend our relational time snacking on technology, we will die from the preventable disease of loneliness. The internet and smartphones are fantastic for connections, communication, and knowledge. But connections are not friends, communication is not intimacy, and knowledge is not wisdom. Use a social network for intimacy and you will invite great harm. Use a chatroom for wisdom and you are guaranteed foolishness. Use connections for friendship and you are destined for loneliness. Justin Whitmel EarlyConnected by similar interests, not by similar visionNo matter how much time you spend with someone, or how many common activities you share, if vulnerability and honesty are not practiced regularly such that you turn from loving your shared hobbies to loving each other, then you are not in a friendship but a companionship.Justin Whitmel EarlyBuilt on comfort together, not built on adversityWounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.Proverbs 27:6 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.Proverbs 27:17Jesus modeled COVENANT FRIENDSHIPCovenant friendships are decided by the Father12 In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. Mark 12: 1-12 (13-17) 1Then [Jesus] began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a pit for the wine press, and built a watchtower; then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. 2When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants to collect from them his share of the produce of the vineyard. 3But they seized him, and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. 4And again he sent another slave to them; this one they beat over the head and insulted. 5Then he sent another, and that one they killed. And so it was with many others; some they beat, and others they killed. 6He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' 7But those tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' 8So they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. 9What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10Have you not read this scripture: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the keystone; 11this was the Lord's doing, and it is amazing in our eyes'?" 12When they realized that he had told this parable against them, they wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowd. So they left him and went away. 13Then they sent to him some Pharisees and some Herodians to trap him in what he said. 14And they came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality, but teach the way of God in accordance with truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not? 15Should we pay them, or should we not?" But knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, "Why are you putting me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me see it." 16And they brought one. Then he said to them, "Whose head is this, and whose title?" They answered, "The emperor's." 17Jesus said to them, "Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were utterly amazed at him.

“We Feebly Struggle… They in Glory Shine!”A SERMON BASED ON Revelation 7:9-17Jesus says that his followers will endure tribulation. Paul tells us that Christians will put up with all sorts of hardships. In our reading from Revelation 7 for this Sunday, we see what the ending looks like. It might be difficult to see how all of this turns out okay… so God gave John just a glimpse of what to expect from eternity with him. Let me tell you: it's as good as it gets.
Monday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time Lk 13:10-17Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the sabbath. And a woman was there who for eighteen years had been crippled by a spirit; she was bent over, completely incapable of standing erect. When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said, "Woman, you are set free of your infirmity." He laid his hands on her, and she at once stood up straight and glorified God.

In this episode, we look at the Jesus's callLuke 5:31-32, Mark 2:17Jesus answered, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”Matthew 9:13But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I'm certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.' 13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.' 14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”Romans 3:20-22For no person will be justified (made righteous, acquitted, and judged acceptable) in His sight by observing the works prescribed by the Law. For [the real function of] the Law is to make men recognize and be conscious of sin [[a]not mere perception, but an acquaintance with sin which works toward repentance, faith, and holy character]. 21 But now the righteousness of God has been revealed independently and altogether apart from the Law, although actually it is attested by the Law and the Prophets, 22 Namely, the righteousness of God which comes by believing with personal trust and confident reliance on Jesus Christ (the Messiah). [And it is meant] for all who believe. For there is no distinction,Galatians 3:10-12 For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, to perform them.” Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, “The righteous man shall live by faith.” However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, “He who practices them shall live by them.”Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.Romans 4:1-7 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.Galatians 2:16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.Acts 4:12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”Acts 2:21And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'Romans 10:13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”Acts 22:16 And now why do you wait? In this week's message Elder Wigfall shows through the Scriptures how Jesus told us we can abide in the True Vine.
The Center of all Things | Matthew 1:1-17Jesus stands at the center of history. But what does that have to do with me?
Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin MaryMt 13:16-17Jesus said to his disciples: "Blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it."
Friday of the Fifth Week of EasterJn 15:12-17Jesus said to his disciples: "This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends."
Do You Hear Jesus Calling Your Name? John 20:16-18 16Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). 17Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' ” 18Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
Easter Day Principal Service The Collect: O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. or this O God, who made this most holy night to shine with the glory of the Lord's resurrection: Stir up in your Church that Spirit of adoption which is given to us in Baptism, that we, being renewed both in body and mind, may worship you in sincerity and truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. or this Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord's resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. First Lesson: Acts 10:34-43 or Jeremiah 31:1-6 34Then Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. 37That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” or 1At that time, says the Lord, I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people. 2Thus says the Lord: The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness; when Israel sought for rest, 3the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. 4Again I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel! Again you shall take your tambourines, and go forth in the dance of the merrymakers. 5Again you shall plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant, and shall enjoy the fruit. 6For there shall be a day when sentinels will call in the hill country of Ephraim: “Come, let us go up to Zion, to the Lord our God.” Psalm: Psalm 118:1-2,14-24 1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; * his mercy endures for ever. 2 Let Israel now proclaim, * “His mercy endures for ever.” 14 The Lord is my strength and my song, * and he has become my salvation. 15 There is a sound of exultation and victory * in the tents of the righteous: 16 “The right hand of the Lord has triumphed! * the right hand of the Lord is exalted! the right hand of the Lord has triumphed!” 17 I shall not die, but live, * and declare the works of the Lord. 18 The Lord has punished me sorely, * but he did not hand me over to death. 19 Open for me the gates of righteousness; * I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the Lord. 20 “This is the gate of the Lord; * he who is righteous may enter.” 21 I will give thanks to you, for you answered me * and have become my salvation. 22 The same stone which the builders rejected * has become the chief cornerstone. 23 This is the Lord's doing, * and it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 On this day the Lord has acted; * we will rejoice and be glad in it. Second Lesson: Colossians 3:1-4 or Acts 10:34-43 1So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, 3for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. or 34Then Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7and the cloth that had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. 8Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10Then the disciples returned to their homes. 11But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; 12and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). 17Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'” 18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her. or 1After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men. 5But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. 6He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.' This is my message for you.” 8So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.9Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”
HOLY GOSPEL: John 20:1-18 The Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. 1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. 4The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' ” 18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.
1Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw thatthe stone had been taken away from the tomb.2So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, andwe do not know where they have laid him.3So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb.4Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.5And stooping to look in, he sawthe linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.6Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there,7andthe face cloth, which had been on Jesus'[a]head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.8Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;9for as yetthey did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.10Then the disciples went back to their homes. Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene 11But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb.12Andshe sawtwo angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.13They said to her,Woman, why are you weeping? She said to them,They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.14Having said this, she turned around andsaw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus.15Jesus said to her,Woman, why are you weeping?Whom are you seeking?Supposing him to bethe gardener, she said to him, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.16Jesus said to her,Mary. She turned and said to him in Aramaic,[b]Rabboni! (which means Teacher).17Jesus said to her,Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go tomy brothers and say to them,I am ascending to my Father and your Father, tomy God and your God.18Mary Magdalenewent and announced to the disciples, I have seen the Lordand that he had said these things to her. Jesus Appears to the Disciples 19On the eveningof that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples werefor fear of the Jews,[c]Jesus came and stood among them and said to them,Peace be with you.20When he had said this,he showed them his hands and his side. Thenthe disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.21Jesus said to them again,Peace be with you. Asthe Father has sent me,even so I am sending you.22And when he had said this, hebreathed on them and said to them,Receive the Holy Spirit.23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld. Jesus and Thomas 24NowThomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin,[d]was not with them when Jesus came.25So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them,Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe. 26Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them.Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said,Peace be with you.27Then he said to Thomas,Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.28Thomas answered him,My Lord and my God!29Jesus said to him,Have you believed because you have seen me?Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.
Welcome to Hope City Church! NEW If you are new to Hope City text “Welcome” to 502-754-3212 SERMON SCRIPTURE John 2:13-17 13It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem. 14In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money. 15Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers' coins over the floor, and turned over their tables. 16Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, “Get these things out of here. Stop turning my Father's house into a marketplace!”17Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God's house will consume me.” Matthew 16:13-19 13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” 15Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” 16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. 18Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock'), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. 19And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” CONNECT Connect with us! Coinciding with Lent, we are preaching through Holy Week. After riding into Jerusalem on Sunday, Jesus returns to the city on Monday to cleanse the temple. Scripture Reading: Matthew 21:12-17Jesus cleanses the temple and receives contrasting reactions from the religious leaders and from the children. The religious leaders are angry while the children sing his praises. Like the children who sang Jesus' praises, we are to have a childlike faith.
Series: All! Jesus has all authority, So that all nationsMight pledge all allegiance to him.Title: “How does worshiping Jesus Christ affect my daily life? Part 2” (Darien Gabriel)Scripture: Matthew 17:14-27 NIVBottom line: Treasuring Christ transforms us when we “listen to him” as the Father commands.DISCUSSION QUESTIONSOUTLINE & NOTESREFERENCES/BIBLIOGRAPHYDISCUSSION QUESTIONSDiscussion questions for group and personal study. Reflect and Discuss1. How is Jesus' patience different from our culture's idea of tolerance?2. What about Jesus' prediction in verses 22-23 tells us that He wasn't a victim of circumstances?3. Does Jesus' promise that nothing will be impossible for the one who believes (v. 21) mean that God is obligated to give us what we want if we believe sincerely enough? Why not?4. What was Jesus' attitude toward the political powers of His day?Final Questions (optional or in place of above)What is God saying to you right now? What are you going to do about it?Find our sermons, podcasts, discussion questions and notes at https://www.gracetoday.net/podcastWeekly questions I answer in preparation for the sermon:Q. What do I want you to know? A. That we are transformed by what we treasure; we live our lives based on what we worship.Q. Why? A. Because you are changed by what you value—what you truly love. This drives your motivations and decisions.Q. What do I want you to do? A. Treasure Christ above all so that you'll “listen to him” through verses 14-27.Q. Why? A. Because there is no better way to please God (our eternal rabbi) than to “Listen to him.” OUTLINE & NOTESIntroductionDave Adamson writes, “I ONCE ASKED A RABBI why he didn't believe Jesus was the Messiah. The rabbi, a personal friend of mine from New Jersey named Rabbi Lubin, told me that while he believed Jesus was a great rabbi, he couldn't accept Jesus as Messiah because his followers have done so many destructive things in his name."Jews judge a rabbi based on the behavior of their followers," he said.Read that again: "Jews judge a rabbi based on the behavior of their followers." This was the reason my friend didn't believe Jesus was the Messiah. He followed up by adding, "The behavior of the disciple reflects the authority of the rabbi."If you're like me, that line felt a lot like a punch in the gut. As it should! Now, with that thought ringing in your ears, what does it look like to "make disciples" who accurately reflect the teachings of Jesus? This is a question I've been processing almost every day since I started…”“…When I first started going to church as a 17-year-old, I thought being a disciple meant completing the six-week discipleship class my church held twice a year. And that's because the Hebrew word we translate as "disciple" in the Bible is "talmid" (n7n't pronounced "tal-meed"), which we usually translate as "student." But, as Rabbi Lubin taught me, while this word does mean "student, it can actually be translated as "apprentice"-someone who is being led to become just like their teacher. The translation of n7n't as student is correct, Rabbi Lubin told me, but the English concept of "student" doesn't quite cover the nuance of this important Hebrew word.” (Emphasis mine)-Dave AdamsonA Jewish rabbit doesn't just expect his disciples to listen to his words and teachings. He expects them to walk in his ways.Let's just ask this question. What if someone was here today and they said that they'd trust and follow Jesus if after looking into the lives of the Jesus followers in this room today they concluded he was a good rabbi. How would your life help or hurt his decision? It starts with this question:How does worshipping Jesus Christ affect my daily life? I submit it does so in 5 ways (with some help from David Platt). Last week we covered the first one. Today we'll cover 2-5.Now, let's review a phrase from last week that should ripple through this entire message: “Listen to him.” (God the Father)Points 2-5 are what we would do if we “Listened to him.” I. It transforms me from what I value to what Jesus Christ values. (17:1-13; cf. 16:23)Why? Because we become what we behold.Ex. My pursuit of Anita has transformed me over the years into a more mature person, a husband (we're one), a father and a follower of Jesus Christ. How? Through glad obedience. II. It helps me suffer long. (17:14-21) Long-suffering = patience. Love is patient (1 Cor 13:4)Why? Putting others first is hard but it's what love does. How? By the power of faith (prayer)Rick Warren says he can tell a person's faith by their prayersThis is the point Jesus wants to make (and why he's frustrated). We either Don't believe God can do it, orDon't believe God will do it. (Or both)God can do it. He is able. He is able to do more than we can ask or imagine in fact. So most of the time we're asking for too little.God cares about it. He may care about something else too (or more) so he answers in accordance with his perfect wisdom and will. But he cares. III. It helps me surrender my life. (17:22)Why? Because of his merciful example. Romans 5:8; 12:1How? Buy the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2; 2 Tim 3:16-17Jesus willingly surrendered his life for us. He did this becauseOf his love for his FatherOf his love for usJesus knew where he was headed. This is the second time he predicts this to his disciples. They are so preoccupied with his death (because it means they'll likely die too) that they miss the second part…his resurrection! This should help me have this same perspective. If I know I'm going to die but not really there's a freedom and peace in that. I'm willing to live life without fear of dying—and that's freedom! I don't care what other people think—just what God thinks.IV. It helps me with my perspective. (17:23)Why? It reminds me that Jesus Christ won at the cross. How? By grace through faith.Jesus also predicts his resurrection. While the 12 miss this every time he mentions it, it's clear to us that he knew what was coming and was preparing for it along the way. (Prayers)When I have this perspective that this isn't all there is I'll live with more freedom because I'll be free from fear…fear of death, fear of failure, fear of rejection, etc.V. It helps me live humbly and confidently. (17:24-27)Why? Because I know who's authority I have and live under already. How? By forsaking/surrendering my rights in this world.Jesus models humble contentment and submission to authorities for the sake of the mission. Jesus models great faith. Think of all the miracles that have to happen for that coin to be in that fishes' mouth.ConclusionBottom line: Treasuring Christ transforms us when we “listen to him” as the Father commands. Are you long-suffering with others? with your circumstances? Are you living surrendered daily? Denying yourself and taking up your cross daily? Are you living victoriously as if you really believed that the best is yet to come? Are you living humbly and confidently? Are you listening to him?Let's pray.REFERENCES/BIBLIOGRAPHY“Preaching the Word” Commentary, Douglas Sean O'Donnell, Edited by Kent Hughes“Matthew” by RC Sproul“CSB Christ Chronological,” Holman“The Bible Knowledge Commentary” by Walvoord, Zuck (BKC)“The Bible Exposition Commentary” by Warren Wiersbe (BEC)“Exalting Jesus in Matthew” by David Platt (CCE)Outline Bible, D WillmingtonNIV Study Bible (NIVSB)ESV Study Bible (ESVSB)
The Baptism of the LordMt 3:13-17Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.”
Psalm 95:1-7Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. 3 For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6 Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; 7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Heart of Complaining Why are we not thankful? (3 Reasons) Luke 17:11-1911Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13and called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!"14When he saw them, he said, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed.15One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. 17Jesus asked, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" 19Then he said to him, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well." 1. Self-focused-ness 2. Evangelho (Lc 6,12-19) — Aleluia, aleluia, aleluia. — A vós, ó Deus, louvamos, a vós, Senhor, cantamos. Vos louva, ó Senhor, o coro dos Apóstolos! — Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo + segundo Lucas. — Glória a vós, Senhor. — Glória a vós, Senhor.
Evangelho (Mt 19,16-22) — O Senhor esteja convosco. — Ele está no meio de nós. — Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo + segundo Mateus. — Glória a vós, Senhor. — Glória a vós, Senhor.
Extraordinarily, gloriously, wonderfully, beautifully normal. The description of the work Jesus does in bringing a person to salvation."Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." - 2 Corinthians 5:17Jesus comes in and does this miracle in us, moving in and through someone who is lost and taking that dead spirit and quickening it. If you don't know that miracle personally (or even if you do), this episode is a must-listen!
Gospel of John, Chapter 15, verses 12-17Jesus, continuing to give His final wisdom to his friends, leaves them with one very memorable thing: His Great Commandment. Love one another as I have loved you. Jesus takes all of the teachings of the Law, the Prophets and the Wisdom literature and sums it up in eight words. Brilliant. Perhaps there is an example there for us to follow.Original Score written and performed by Bridget Zenk

Matthew 21:12-17Jesus at the Temple12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,' but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.'”14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant.16 “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read,“‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise'?”17 And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/yourdailybible)
On the Sermon on the Mount1. The Sermon on the Mount is not an isolated speech.2. The whole sermon is Christ describing what life in the kingdom and allegiance to him looks like. 3. Obedience to the Sermon on the Mount is a practice in imagination. Food excess, body idolatry/body insecurity, and the mastery of the body. What both food excess and body idolatry have in common is that the body has become our master. Whether it is the temptation toward excess and overeating or the over-sexualization of the human body. In Freudian thought, the pleasure principle is the seeking of immediate gratification and the avoidance of pain, in order to satisfy biological or psychological needs. Yet, the entirety of our culture is set up to stoke the fires of desire and to feed our disordered desires. On Genesis 2: Dust and Spirit5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground—then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. – Genesis 2:5-7 ESVHumanity is both dust and breath or body and spirit. Humans are both physicality and spirituality. On Genesis 3: To take and eat“Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.' ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.” –Genesis 3:1–6.Ignatius of Loyola writes; “Sin is an unwillingness to trust that what God wants for me is only my deepest happiness.” Now whether you read Genesis as history or literary theology, this story reminds us that we all have appetites or desires that are out of sync with God's best. On Matthew 4: The New Adam“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.' ” – Matthew 4:1–4.Jesus, the new Adam, goes toe to toe with the temptor from the garden. At the moment we think he would be weakest– going forty days without food– he proves himself to be strongest. Where every other human being has failed, Jesus has victory. Paul will later offer thoughts on this say, “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.” (1 Cor. 15:22 ESV)How does Jesus start his kingdom work with Fasting?16 “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” – Matthew 6:16–18 (ESV)Jesus assumes two things; that we will fast and that we will screw it up. “When you fast…”Not if, not on the occasion, but when…Jesus isn't necessarily commanding fasting, but there is an underlying assumption that it will be a part of the life of apprenticeship to him. There are a variety of practices called ‘fasting'; like giving up social media, or TV, or eating a restricted diet. While none of this is bad, I would like to insist fasting should be defined specifically as going without food. As a first-century Israelite, he was likely fasting on Tuesdays and Thursdays every single week. As Scott McKnight observes, “The common fast in Judaism was from the evening meal to the next evening meal—skipping food at breakfast and midday. It wasn't heroic but demanded enough for discomfort.” What Jesus is calling us to is not heroic efforts, but embodied spirituality. “Fasting helps us to express, to deepen, and to confirm the resolution that we are ready to sacrifice anything, even ourselves, to attain the Kingdom of God.” – Andrew MurrayJesus' warnings on fasting Matthew 6:16-17Jesus' instructions are to not practice fasting before others. Jesus isn't discrediting communal fasting. Jesus is not calling communal fasts wrong, he is calling fasting to show off wrong. The Role of Fasting in the life of the apprentice1. Fasting allows us to pray more– every hunger pang functions as an alarm bell. 2. Fasting allows us to come into solidarity with the poor. The prophet Isaiah, in a critique of the self-righteous Israelites, wrote–“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?” –Isaiah 58:6-7 ESV3. Fasting helps to clarify our desires. “16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other,to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things, there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.” – Galatians 5:16–26.The best way to define flesh is as ‘disordered desires' or our impulse toward instant gratification. In fasting, we put both our body and our spirit into alignment by feeding on the energy of the Spirit of God and not food. Spiritual Practice1. Pick a day and try it. We suggest fasting (going without food and drink) twice a week for twelve or twenty-four hours. This can look like not eating breakfast and lunch, or skipping dinner one night and breaking your fast the next night.**A note on eating disorders and medical conditions– if you've ever suffered from an eating disorder or live with a diagnosed medical condition, you should consult a doctor, therapist, or pastor prior to fasting. Fasting is a helpful practice given to us by Christ, but notice that fasting is not intended to harm the body. Rather, it is designed to bring the body and soul into alignment.2. Fasting is about freedom– not legalism or pride. One of the ways to avoid the boasting Jesus warns of is to simply submit to the community paradigm.
Scripture: Mark 2:13-17Jesus was not concerned about his reputation. He raised the bar for Scriptural truth, but at the same time he spent a significant amount of time with people who would have been considered unclean and unrighteous. Too often, the posture of the church is to stiff-arm—to push away from people who make us uncomfortable or who don't fit our tidy ideas about righteousness. But Jesus modeled a way of love that embraced the outcasts and the unclean, and in doing so showed us the real meaning of truth and grace. Our posture towards those around us, especially towards those who might challenge our comforts, should be one of arms-wide welcoming.
