The Audio Files Ep. 34: Music Sovereignty: An Exploration of Jam Band Economies

Badlands Media

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 1, 2026 99:53

Hosted by Brad Zerbo and Jaytriot with special guest Ashe in America, this special edition of The Audio Files dives deep into the culture, history, and philosophy behind jam bands. Ashe traces the musical lineage from The Grateful Dead's touring-first rebellion to The Allman Brothers' Southern rock harmonies, Derek and the Dominos' blues influence, Widespread Panic's Red Rocks legacy, and the sovereign spirit of Jack Johnson. Along the way, the trio explores bootleg culture, improvisation, musical community, and how bands built movements without relying on radio gatekeepers. The conversation crescendos with Dave Matthews Band, featuring a live COVID-era performance that became a lifeline during lockdowns, and a surprise guitar remix from Brad that bridges skepticism with appreciation. The episode closes with Rusted Root and a heartfelt tribute to a dear friend, reminding listeners why live music and shared experience matter so much. Themes of musical freedom, community resilience, artistic sovereignty, and the emotional power of live performance run throughout this episode.

In 1960s London, for young guitar enthusiasts, believing that “Clapton is God” was practically the 11th Commandment. In 1970 he lent his big, sticky tone to yet another band: Derek and the Dominos. The group's white-hot blues burned bright for barely more than a year, but their impact was massive. Guided by drug, alcohol and heartbreak free-fall, Eric Clapton created one of rock's most recognizable guitar riffs, while drummer Jim Gordon contributed God's great piano coda. Except Gordon was guided by something far more sinister — something that started with incessant voices in his head, and ended with a hammer, a butcher knife, and a dead mother. This Episodes Questions: Brians Questions: Have been listening to your podcast for awhile now and the more I listen to more questions come to mind. Here is my current one for a walnut waterfall bench I'm working on. The dimensions are approx 58”L x 18”W x 16”D. How should I join a shelf to this bench where the grain flows continuously from the legs up through the bench top? The shelf will also be a glued up panel with the grain running the same direction as the bench top. If I attach the shelf to the inside faces of the legs using a mortise and tenon joint, do I need to account for wood movement? The legs, benchtop, and shelf are all 1.75” thick. I would assume that given they're all the same thickness and technically the wood grain is in the same direction as the legs, just perpendicular, it would expand and contract together, and I could just glue the tenon. That said I don't want to guess and hearing Guy talk about furniture exploding has me concerned. If wood movement is a concern then what's the correct way to account for this movement? Should it be treated like a breadboard end with dowels through the tenons, installed through the bottom of the legs (the shelf sits 2 inches off the ground)? Or would it be better, and stronger, to use floating tenons/Dominos for this joint instead and just not glue the outside dominos and cut them loose to account for the expansion and contraction while gluing the center domino(s)? Thanks, Chayse Bell Thanks for the great podcast, I discovered your channel about a month ago and now listen all the time traveling to and from work. I've been woodworking a little over a year now and currently working on a dining table made from ash and have picked up all sorts of pearls that have helped with the glue up, apron design, finishing, etc., so thank you for all that. This question is directed to Brian, as he has mentioned that his shop is in his basement. I currently work out of my two car garage that I share with my wife's car. We just built the house in 2024 and I'm kicking myself that I didn't insulate the garage. These cold Northern Indiana days are making working in the garage pretty uncomfortable. I know I could just insulate it, but HVAC isn't attached to the garage either so to make it truly comfortable would be a big job/cost. So, Brian, can you share a little more about the layout/design of your basement shop? E.g. was it a room that existed that you converted into the shop or you framed the room specifically for a shop? How do you take extra precautions to make sure your family isn't affected by dust, as this is my primary concern. Obviously, I know of dust collection and dust filters, but it still concerns me to think I'd be working in the basement. Do you have anything you wish you did differently? We have an unfinished basement that is very open, so the sky would be the limit for me in the future before we finish it. Thanks, Evan Guys Questions: Somewhat recently I made a gift for my wife using White oak. I had predetermined that for a finishing schedule I wanted to first apply Danish oil, then seal it with shellac, and minwax performance series varnish for a top coat. I ran into an issue when I began to finish the piece. Not knowing a thing about wood porosity, I liberally applied watco Danish oil, and as a result I had a big problem with seepage. Now, my research had cautioned me that I would need to keep checking on the piece periodically for the next several hours after application to wipe up any seepage that came up. Even so, you this went on for so long that it became an issue. Two full days after application I was still wiping up seepage. I would wipe the piece down before bed at night, and when I'd check it in the morning there would be spots on the surface that took a considerable amount of effort to buff out. I couldn't keep up with it, and after a few days the surface was covered in spots, which meant that I had to start over.  As I mentioned previously, I could not find any information online regarding how to deal with this problem. Just to see what would happen, I decided to try aiming a heat gun at the work piece after it had been drying for a couple of hours. This worked phenomenally, and I could not have been more thrilled. Of course the heat didn't dry out the wood any faster or anything, but what it did do was vastly accelerate the seepage process. The oil was rapidly drawn up to the surface of the wood, where I could wipe it away, and after treating both sides in this manner for a total of perhaps 10 minutes it seemed that all of the excess oil had been drawn out. I wiped the work piece down and had no more issues.  Of, like with any application involving a heat gun, I had to keep it moving, otherwise it would start to bake the spots of oil onto the surface. Anyways, I just thought this was a neat trick that might come in handy with oil finishes if seepage is ever a huge issue. I hope you guys found this interesting. Zach Owens Hello from Chico, California! I have recently started listening to y'all's podcast while researching inspiration for reconfiguring and refining my workspace. I thank Guy for highlighting the importance of drawers, I realized that I previously had none. I am a hobbyist woodworker looking for advice on air filtration for my two car garage shop. It is approximately 3960 cubic feet, 22' x 20' x 9'. While working, the garage door and access door (detached garage with no climate control) is usually open, weather permitting, and tend to have good airflow and supplement with a box fan when needed. I have a Harbor Freight 2hp Dust Collector for my machines, cabinet saw, planer, jointer, and router table and do feel that this my be slighty under powered for my system. I do notice a fair amount of fine dust suspended in the air after milling operations and breaking down sheet goods on the table saw and a noteable layer of dust across the entire shop. I think that adding an air filter could help reduce fine particulate and could potentially allow me to work with doors shut when it is too hot or too cold. Do you think that adding an air filter makes a significant addition to air quality or should I look further into optimizing dust collection? If you feel an air filter is a worthwhile addition, what would you reccomend for an approximately 4,000 cubic foot shop? I have been looking at the WEN 3410 unit due to claimed CFM and cost. I have also contemplated building one with a second hand blower from an old furnace. I am mechanically inclined and competent with electrical. I also feel that timers and variable speeds are not needed. I would also add that whatever I decide, the garage is detached from the main house and there is a studio above that is rented out to a seperate individual and would like noise and resonance to be kept to a minimum. The only real estate I have available for air filtration is the ceiling. Thank you for your time. Nick Halverson Huys Questions: Longtime listener. Truly enjoy the podcast. I am considering upgrading my table saw to a contractor or cabinet model. The choice are really overwhelming. I get a lot of advice on different brands, phase of motor and should I buy new or used. Any advice appreciated. Greg I recently bought a small bandsaw mill (Woodmizer LX30) and am becoming an amateur sawyer, exclusively to supply lumber for my own projects.  Once I have dried lumber to an acceptable moisture content, what is the best way to store a few thousand board feet?  My kiln guy says I should store packs of dead-stacked lumber horizontally, wrapped in 6-mil plastic.  That sounds like a pain.  I'd prefer to forgo the plastic and store the lumber horizontally, on edge, in a rack, in my unheated pole barn - which, I should note, sometimes gets a wet floor in heavy rains.  Then I'd bring pieces into my shop for a few days to acclimate before machining.  What do you recommend for long-term lumber storage? Kyle

It is FORE Friday, folks! The weekend is on the tee, the fairways are calling, and we are here to get your mind right before you take that first swing on Saturday morning.I'm your host, Daniel Guest, and today we are talking about a tragedy I see on the driving range every single week. It's the tragedy of hard work... applied to the wrong problem. If you've ever practiced for three hours, hit 200 balls, and walked away hitting it worse than when you started... this episode is for you. Let's tee it up."The Trap: The Whac-A-Mole GameHost: "So, here is the scenario. You played last weekend, and you were slicing the ball off the planet. You go home, you open up YouTube, and you search 'How to stop a slice.'You find a great tip. The pro says, 'You're coming over the top, so you need to drop your hands inside.' You go to the range, you grind on dropping your hands inside, and suddenly... you start hooking it into the parking lot. Or worse, you start shanking it.Why? Because you were trying to fix a symptom, not the cause."Host: "In golf instruction, many call this 'Whac-A-Mole.'You see the club face is open? You try to flip your hands to close it.You see a 'chicken wing' left arm? You try to glue your elbow to your ribs. But here is the hard truth: 90% of what you feel and see in your swing is a reaction, not an action."Key Takeaway: Your body is smart. It is constantly compensating. If you try to fix the compensation (the symptom) without fixing the root cause, your body will just invent a new compensation that is usually worse. The Concept: The Big DominoHost: "So, how do we stop wasting time? We have to find the Big Domino.I want you to imagine a row of dominos.Domino 1 is your Grip.Domino 2 is your Setup.Domino 3 is your Takeaway.Domino 10 is that ugly Chicken Wing at impact. If you spend all your time trying to fix Domino 10 (the chicken wing), you are fighting a losing battle, because Dominos 1 through 9 have already fallen over and pushed it there. You have to work on the earliest fault in the chain."Host: "Let me give you a real-world example. I had a student recently who was desperate to fix his 'over-the-top' move. He had been trying to swing out to the right for months.I looked at his swing. His grip was incredibly weak (turned too far left). Because his grip was weak, the clubface was open. Because the face was open, his brain knew that if he swung from the inside, he'd hit it 50 yards right. So, his brain forced him to come over the top just to pull the ball back into the fairway. The 'over-the-top' move wasn't the fault. It was the only thing saving him!We fixed the grip (The Big Domino). Suddenly, the face was square. His brain said, 'Okay, I don't need to pull this anymore,' and his swing path straightened out naturally. We fixed the grip, and the swing path fixed itself."The Action Plan for the WeekendHost: "So, for this FORE Friday, here is my challenge to you. I want you to stop guessing. If you are heading to the range this weekend, do not just start trying random tips you saw on Instagram. 1. Record your swing. You cannot fix what you cannot see. 2. Look at the setup first. Grip, Alignment, Stance, Posture. This is usually where the 'Big Domino' lives. 3. Verify, don't guess. If you think your problem is your downswing, prove it. But I'd bet you a sleeve of Pro V1s that the problem actually started in your takeaway."Host: "And if you can't find the fault? Ask for help. That is what we are here for at Imagen Golf. Stop being the hero who tries to perform surgery on themselves. Let a doctor look at the MRI."Host: "Golf is hard enough without working on the wrong things. Be efficient with your practice. Find the root cause, knock down that first domino, and watch the rest of your swing fall into place.Have a fantastic weekend, hit 'em straight, and as always... here's to playing the game you've always imagined.See you next week!"

Michael Schur is the creative force behind some of the most beloved comedies of the past two decades: The Good Place, Parks and Rec, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and most recently, A Man On The Inside, starring Ted Danson. If Mike's face looks familiar, it might be from his scene-stealing performance as Mose Schrute on The Office, on which Mike was also a writer. Mike's shows have a distinctive signature: they don't just make you laugh – they make you think about morality and what it means to be human. Along the way, they might just make you cry. In this episode, Mike charts the songs and milestones that turned him into the writer he is today – from the Neutral Milk Hotel album that taught him to wear his heart on his sleeve, to the fender bender that sparked an existential crisis that would become The Good Place, to the Taylor Swift song that pulled him out of a creative rut during the pandemic. It's a conversation about how art teaches us to feel, and how those feelings become the stories we tell. Here are his songs. “Weird Al” Yankovic, “Eat It” The Beatles, “A Day in the Life” Indigo Girls, “Kid Fears” Neutral Milk Hotel, “Ghost” Derek and the Dominos, “Key to the Highway” Arvo Pärt, “Spiegel im Spiegel” Taylor Swift, “gold rush”

Send us a textEpisode OverviewIn this episode of The Own It Show, Justin Roethlingshoefer dismantles the myth that winter causes “cold and flu season.” He shows how a stack of lifestyle dominos—back-to-school schedules, less sunlight, more indoor time, circadian disruption (hello, daylight savings), lower movement, and sugar spikes—prime our immune systems for defeat. Then he lays out an actionable, step-by-step Own It Immune Protocol to stay resilient through the holidays so your household becomes the one everyone asks, “How are you never sick?”Episode HighlightsDomino #1: Back to School (Sept/Early Fall) Less outdoor time & sunlight → lower vitamin D, more indoor exposure, schedule stress, earlier mornings → circadian disruption + reduced sleep quality.Domino #2: Daylight Savings (Late Oct/Early Nov) Earlier darkness → mood dips, lower activity, melatonin/cortisol rhythm thrown off → worse sleep, lower HRV, higher inflammation.Domino #3: Sugar Season (Halloween → Holidays) Candy/party foods → acute immune suppression for 4–6 hours post-load; repeat hits + late nights = rolling vulnerability.Self-Fulfilling Slide Less light & movement → lower VO₂ and energy → move even less → sleep & recovery worsen → immunity tanks.Mindset Shift It's not an unstoppable winter force—it's a predictable pattern you can interrupt. The Own It Immune Protocol (Holiday Edition)(Lifestyle first; supplements support but don't replace habits. Not medical advice.)Sunlight & Light HygieneA.M. light (5–10 min) outdoors within an hour of waking to anchor circadian rhythm.Midday sun (10–20 min) to support vitamin D synthesis when possible.Evening: Dim house lights 2–3 hrs pre-bed; avoid overhead glare; use lamps.Sleep & RhythmFixed sleep/wake window (±30 min) even on weekends.3–2–1 wind-down: 3 hrs no heavy food/alcohol; 2 hrs no work; 1 hr no screens (or strict blue-light filters).Cool, dark room; nasal breathing; white noise if needed.Movement & BreathDaily zone-2 (20–40 min) walk or easy cardio; add 10–20 min strength circuit 3x/week.Pattern-interrupt breath: 4–6 slow nasal breaths before meals & during stress to keep you parasympathetic.Sugar & Party StrategyProtein-first at gatherings (20–30g) + fiber & fluids before dessert.One-plate rule; if sweets, pair with protein/fat to blunt spikes.Cut off caffeine by 10–11 a.m. to protect sleep.Foundational NutritionDaily anchors: protein (~0.7–1.0 g/lb goal weight), colorful produce, mineral-rich foods (red meat, seafood, eggs, dairy if tolerated,===========================Subscribe and Listen to the Own It Show HERE:➡︎ YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@justinroethlingshoefer➡︎ Apple Podcasts:https://apple.co/3KCyN3j➡︎ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3F58Ez4lbIKQ6kMu2pfpIG===========================Resources:⚡️CHECK OUR PROGRAMS: https://ownitcoaching.com/programs/⚡️BOOK: https://thepowerofownershipbook.com/=========================== Connect with Justin Roethlingshoefer on Social Media:➡︎ linkedin.com/in/justin-roethlingshoefer➡︎https://www.instagram.com/justinroeth/?hl=en

BAM! 2025 - coming to you live on location. Yep, October is more recognisable for being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but while Blindness Awareness Month is less familiar to some, it sounds better, more straightforward, rolling off the tongue as acronym than BCAM. This week on Outlook, with the start of a new month…October, we're highlighting BAM even though, we always say, every month is BAM for us. On this BAM Mixed Bag episode sister/co-host Kerry is streaming live and on route, but luckily makes it back to “the flat” still within the first half of the show, a major Uk cellphone service is down which made it difficult to get a cab back from the furniture warehouse. But luckily, freezer deal was found (with help from Barry's assistant AI as he terms his co-processor) and service from the store's sales guy was excellent (lovely British chap) who didn't necessarily know how to assist two blind people, yet was all the things we ask anyone to be when interacting with the public. BAM getting off to a pretty good start after last week's nightmare (see previous Outlook for more on what not to do. It's really not that much different from how to assist anyone else, just be willing to listen to our guidance, as we know what we need as blind people). It's Thanksgiving for brother/co-host Brian back in Canada, but it's also Columbus Day in the States (Indigenous Peoples Day in approximately 30 states now) and we're discussing this update/correction on which one is preferable, along with celebrating our lovely mother's birth, and thankfully the cab finally arriving to take Kerry and BF Barry home is hardly noticeable in the background. We're comparing Canada and The States as baseball rivalries intensify in October. Some things are, as “American as apple pie” while we're talking thankfulness (which should be as obvious as “Apple cake” with details of what Historian Heather Cox Richardson says about Columbus Day's origins, years of colonial subjugation, and the difference in definitions that can become glaringly clear in 100 years. Outlook On Radio Western stands on the foundation of Diversity and we're talking definitions of all of this, plus on things like BAM or World Sight Day, from orgs like the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) or the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) and using a daytime TV infomercial about “blind children in poorer countries” and how helpless images make it seem. While no country should think itself above another like how even the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) tries to raise money by using Canada's blind people and cute images of guide dogs to elicit pity and donations. The NFB thinks of BAM more from the standpoint of independence which often, to them means employment, but though we reject another definition that's all about the patronising angle of everything we do as inspirational, we lay out the harmful impacts of something like the messaging from World Sight Day's promotional material. While the International Agency for the prevention of blindness (the IAPB) is focusing on eye health around the world, some organisations and charities and nonprofits go about fundraising in reckless ways. Brian is riding the fader live in the studio while Kerry was out tracking down monkey nuts (but shhh Mom is listening), returning by cab and sharing how drivers often struggle (as sighted as sighted can be) to find the address, Kerry foreshadowing a recent struggle with such things plus one of Marlee Matlin's similar experiences with those of us who have our sense of hearing which Kerry heard on a recent audio description project. That's why our mom recently painted Kerry's garage door bright red and put up a huge house number, Barry in the process of doing something similar for those drivers who might as well be blind behind the wheel, Brian using the example of Uber drivers trying to find the door into the University Community Centre (UCC) where we record our show out of. We use the Pin The Tail On The Donkey example of disorientation to make the point that these are just more additions of those tropes that are harmful to us blind people and those that are simply the truth of our current reality. Multi sensory, multi media, and interactive - from a recent work experience she had doing cultural consulting and quality control for Toronto's version of the Nuit Blanche festival, she then tells of another Canadian connection (as we call it) when out during a Saturday pub night for many in neighbouring Belfast. Instead Kerry and Barry chose to attend a local boy's return performance, Brian Kennedy (Canada has Cory Hart while Northern Ireland has BK), to the classic Black Box Theatre as he played some Joni Mitchell covers including “Woodstock,” (not the same Woodstock but still). So on this one Brian with an “I” and Kerry with a “y” are talking the Dominos that have to fall in our lives with dealing with how sometimes sighted people can and do suck which adds up the blocks of frustration and fatigue as Kerry shares a bit about a recent visitor experience at Belfast's Titanic Museum and how baseball radio broadcasts put us on an equal playing field (baseball metaphor there for you). BAM! It gets someone's attention at least and we're thankful for our mother, apple cake instead of pumpkin pie, and the Toronto Bluejays beating The Yankees and moving on to take the American League championship, from east to west and north to south - BAM begins.

Recently, the legal technology company Case Status held its inaugural Client Experience Summit in Charleston, S.C., a conference devoted to exploring how AI, data and ethical practices can enable law firms to deliver a better experience for their clients. In an opening keynote at the conference, Andy Seavers, the cofounder and CEO of Case Status, unveiled several new products, including, most notably, Client Intelligence, an AI-driven platform that the company says represents a significant shift for law firms from reactive client management to predictive client engagement. Shortly after Seavers delivered that keynote, LawNext host Bob Ambrogi, who attended the conference, sat down with him for this interview to learn more about the company and its latest announcements. When Case Status first launched, it was often described as the Dominos pizza tracker for law, insofar as it enabled clients to easily keep track of the status of their case. As you'll hear from Seavers in today's interview, it has expanded significantly since then, into a full client experience and client intelligence platform. Also in today's interview, Seavers discusses his just-published a book, Future Firm, Fossil Firm, in which he lays out a blueprint for how law firms can evolve. He discusses his vision of a “future firm,” and why he believes that leadership posture, operational systems, and client experience are now the defining factors of firm success.   Thank You To Our Sponsors This episode of LawNext is generously made possible by our sponsors. We debate the jab, laugh about the madness of conspiracy culture, and throw ourselves into questions that nobody else dares to ask We hit everything from Trump and JD Vance to portals on the White House lawn. Tucker Carlson interviewing on the front lawn of a building that looks like it's built from shadows, portals opening and disappearing, and the fear that something big is coming. Taylor Swift announced a new album, 1st female umpire in the MLB, Sami Sheen almost sex trafficked, Harry & Meghan's new Netflix “deal”, Stuttering John sues WATP Karl, the rise of the idiot interviewer, and Howard Stern's Dana Plato interview. Shawn Windsor dropped another great (but sad) story on the latest ML Soul of Detroit. Taylor Swift has announced a new album is coming. She broke the news on the stupid Kelce Brothers podcast, New Heights. Sports: Jen Pawol has become the first female MLB umpire. She totally BLEW her very first call. Meanwhile, male cheerleaders enter the NFL. This motorcycle crash is insane and totally worth breaking into regular programming. Stuttering Jon Melendez has served Karl Hamburger and Shuli Egar and suing for making fun of him on the internet. Harry and Meghan get another Netflix deal. Podcaster Jennifer Welch absolutely hates Trump supporters. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has had a lot of work done. Howard Stern is getting “canceled” now for his 1999 Dana Plato interview. We scrub through the final bit featuring Dana. Even Corey Feldman is piling on the King of All Media. The Detroit Tigers are winning despite Tom Mazawey's hot take. Angelina Jolie is fleeing the US because of Brad Pitt. AI is killing computer science grad's careers. Sophie Rain leaves the OnlyFans Bop House. Sami Sheen won't go away. She believes she was almost sex trafficked. Kate Cassidy remains annoying. Playboy wants nothing to do with Donna D'Errico. Jami Gertz is “unrecognizable”. Babies love going to tennis matches. The Nelk Boys interviewed Benjamin Netanyahu for some reason. It's the rise of the idiot-interview. RIP Bobby Whitlock of Derek and the Dominos. Derek and the Dominos drummer Jim Gordon is dead murderer. This episode was recorded at the 2025 Western Dairy Management Conference in Reno, Nevada.Stan begins with an overview of the dairy checkoff since its inception in 1983. At that time, dairy farmers were producing 139 billion pounds of milk, but only 122 million pounds were being consumed. Dairy promotion has evolved to focus on research and education about nutrition, crisis management and even partnerships with Domino's, Taco Bell and McDonald's. (3:02)Stan and Marty detail some of the national and regional partnerships around dairy menu options. Walt notes that the grilled cheese burrito from Taco Bell is one of his son's favorite fast food meals. The panel discusses some of the strategy behind the Taco Bell partnership as well as marketing to Gen Z consumers about how dairy fits into mind and body wellness. (6:39)Walt comments the checkoff has done and is continuing to do a great job of being future-ready. He remembers a few years ago hearing about the gaming generation and partnerships with Mr. Beast and YouTube and embedding cows in Minecraft, and now his sons are playing Minecraft and gaming and are on YouTube. (13:43)Stan notes in 1995, exports were at 3%. That has now increased to 16-17%. Marty gives some examples of partnerships with the Dallas Cowboys and HEB stores in Mexico to promote dairy. (16:09)The panel discusses the US investments in processing, the “Dairy Renaissance”, research into dairy-as-medicine, and continued product innovations to meet consumer demands. (23:24)Marty and Stan detail the agreement between the Dairy Checkoff and Mayo Clinic investigating the role of whole milk foods in treating and preventing cardiovascular and metabolic disease. RUNDOWN   Mitch and Hotshot recap the Mariners' Ichiro celebration weekend, praising the team's tribute while questioning the odd inclusion of Tom Brady in the video montage—especially after deliberately omitting Alex Rodriguez to avoid boos. Episode 346's “area code spotlight” on Houston's, highlights a long list of famous residents and musical talent from ZZ Top and Kenny Rogers to Beyoncé and Travis Scott. Mitch and Hotshot marvel at the Mariners' blistering run—seven straight wins, 13 games over .500, and now just a game behind the Astros with 43 to play. With stars like Gino Suarez yet to heat up and pitching still not at peak form, the duo wonders just how high this team's ceiling might be. In this Mariners No-Table, Mitch, Joe Doyle, and Brady Farkas break down Seattle's 9–1 homestand, surging offense, and remarkable lineup depth even with Gino Suarez and Cal Raleigh struggling. They debate bullpen concerns—especially Andres Muñoz's command—plus looming roster decisions with Luke Raley and Victor Robles returning. Jacson Bevens joins Mitch for some key takeaways from Seattle's preseason opener, spotlighting rookie WR Tory Horton's strong debut, dynamic fullback usage, and a cleverly schemed interception that showcased Mike Macdonald's defense. They discuss the ceiling and depth of the defense, the roles of Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet, and the need for top performances from CBs Riq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon. In this re-aired classic, John Tesh tells Mitch the now-famous story of how “Roundball Rock” was born, from humming the tune into his answering machine in Europe to bringing it to life in the studio. He shares behind-the-scenes details about working with NBC, the song's enduring legacy, and his surprise at how deeply it has embedded itself in basketball culture.   GUESTS   Brady Farkas | Host, Refuse to Lose Podcast (Mariners on SI) Joe Doyle | MLB Draft & Mariners Analyst, Over Slot Substack Jacson Bevens | Cigar Thoughts, Seahawks Writer John Tesh | "Roundball Rock" - NBA's Iconic Theme   TABLE OF CONTENTS   0:00 | Mariners Celebrate Ichiro Weekend, Roast Tom Brady Video Cameo, and Spotlight Houston's 346 with Musical Legends 23:30 | Mariners Surge to Within One Game of Houston Behind Deep, Dangerous Lineup 39:21 | GUEST: Mariners No-Table: Red-Hot Offense, Roster Crunch Looming, and Pennant-Race Predictions 1:09:33 | GUEST: Jacson Bevens; Seahawks Preseason Takeaways: Horton Impresses, Fullback Power, Defensive Potential, and QB Depth Questions 1:29:50 | GUEST: John Tesh Recounts Creating the Iconic NBA on NBC Theme 1:51:50 | Other Stuff Segment: Seahawks vs. Raiders preseason game recap (and missed viewing due to building furniture), Seahawks upcoming preseason game vs. Chiefs — questions on starters like Sam Darnold and WR Tory Horton, Rookie Gray Zabel's strong performance at guard in preseason, Los Angeles Chargers LT Rashaan Slater — $113M contract extension followed by ruptured patella tendon in practice, NASCAR driver Connor Zilisch's clavicle injury while celebrating race win (compared to Kendrys Morales' injury), Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes' performance — ERA stats and seven-hit game, Proposal for Backstreet Boys vs. NSYNC in “The Match” golf event (and lack of interest from Mitch/Scott), Former NFL RB LaShaun Johnson sentenced for large-scale dogfighting operation, Former Miami Heat security officer Marco Thomas Perez charged with stealing/selling game-used memorabilia (including LeBron's Game 7 jersey), Houston police officer under investigation for TikTok video about writing tickets due to lack of sex, Johnstown, PA wins Little League Softball World Series — standout pitching by Reagan Bills, Tom Brady statue unveiled at Gillette Stadium (commentary on appearance), John Cena discusses hair transplant and hair loss stigma, Jen Pawol becomes first female umpire in MLB regular-season game, Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little hits 70-yard FG in preseason game, Starbucks Korea bans desktop computers, printers, and large setups in stores, Mariano Rivera tears Achilles in Yankees Old-Timers Game RIP Segment: Bobby Whitlock — Derek and the Dominos co-founder, first white artist signed to Stax Records, Jim Lovell — Apollo 13 commander, astronaut with four spaceflights Headlines: Owner of Trump Burger in Houston facing deportation, Man lights cigarette from Eternal Flame at Arc de Triomphe (Paris), Ice cream shop releases breast milk–flavored ice cream, Japanese teacher fired for working part-time at a convenience store; school apologizes to students.
