SHOW NOTES:
The Bible teaches that a desire to turn away from evil is not enough. A believer must fully commit to their repentance. As we have been covering 1 Samuel, we have seen that Saul time and time again would state his desire to do well, but ultimately failed to obey God and repent for what he had done. Whether in his failure to wipe out the Amalekites, or in his failure to wait until Samuel arrived to offer up the burnt offering, his will proved to be opposite to God's command for him to obey. Had Saul fully repented, we would not have seen him make these mistakes again and again. We must pay attention to what he did and ensure we do not repeat the same mistakes.

Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Cindy: I love Fatlossity PM for the best sleep, but I often get jittery with caffeine so I have only used the AM short term. I don't get the same effect with your Sleep Support supplement (melatonin tends to awaken me after only a few hours). I do benefit from the amino acid L-trypophine, on occasion. Since Fatlossity PM cannot be purchased separately, do you have any suggestions for improving sleep or which supplement is likely to help me? My sleep has improved over the last 6 years from learning from you, but I often still wake up after 5 or 6 hours of sleep to go to the bathroom. I am post-menopasusal, but I do take estrogen replacement- which has helped. But, Once my brain starts thinking, sadly sleep is usually over! Anonymous: Hello Dr. Cabral. 39 year old male here. My issue is related to “Incomplete Bowel Movement” and I have been experiencing this issue for at least 10 years and I'm unsure what I should do about it. Basically, I have a normal bowel movement but it sometimes feels like not everything came out. So then I use an anal douche and every single time there is more poop coming out with the water. This happens with every single bowel movement. I'm a “fitness guy” with a healthy diet and lots of fiber. Thank you! Joy: Thanks for all you do Dr Cabral! (Q #1 of higher importance) I'm a 30y/o F & would consider myself to be decently healthy & aware of my body. I however experience awful joint pain & weakness. It tends to hold me back from enjoying an active lifestyle. It's literally every joint from my neck to my ankles. My brother was born with a disease -Osteogenesis Imperfecta but has the more mild type 1. It affects the production of collagen. I don't think I have OI also. Curious what would you recommend me take/do to help my joint pain. Q#2 I recently read of the “earthing” concept, which is supposed to have a range of health benefits. It involves the natural electricity of the earth, here is a link for more info. I'm skeptical, but would like to know what u think! https://groundingofficial.com/ Jade: Hey there. I've been invested in my health for some time now and have been doing my best to encourage people around me to be healthier versions of themselves. However, I have one aunt in her late 50s whose diet isn't necessarily the best. She drinks Diet Coke mostly every day, eats out regularly and doesn't exercise. She also has an extremely stressful job which doesn't help. It‘s always been difficult to encourage her to change her eating habits, but she was just diagnosed with carpal tunnel. I told her I would do my best to get information on small changes she can make to better her condition and overall life. Is there anything she can do or take that may not be drastic? I would recommend your detox and less processed foods and drinks of course, but that's too extreme for her. Erica: Hi Dr. Cabral! I wanted to ask you your thoughts on what could be the root of my symptoms. I've had dizziness for about 3-4 years now and it's very consistent almost every day. However, it hasn't gotten worse it's stayed very consistent over this time. It seems to be worse around the time of my period and also when under stress. In addition, I have a lot of popping in both of my ears and sometimes my ears feel itchy and almost like my eustachian tubes have to release pressure. I went to the ENT who said I might have Eustachian tube dysfunction but ruled out any fluid in my ears or other issues. I also tried the maneuver for crystals in my ears which didn't seem to have an effect either. Any thoughts on things I could try? Dizziness got worse when I took antibiotics 3/4 years ago. It's July. And I just ordered a new planner for the rest of the year. This is really hard for me. I don't like leaving things unfinished. Having a half-used planner is definitely unfinished. Incomplete. It feels like failing. And I don't know if you ever feel that way, where you want to push through something just to check it off the list and say you got it done. Or to feel like you got your money's worth on a planner or other resource you bought. But I realized that I needed to make a change. Let me tell you why. Dave Hurwitt is an innovator. Over the course of his career, he's led the development and launch of new products and services – from toothpicks to wind turbines – that have generated well over $1 billion in sales. Having worked in admissions through grad school, he was amazed by how little technology and the internet had impacted the college search and admissions process. And even more, he was dismayed to discover how often students were transferring or dropping out altogether. In early 2020, this led directly to his founding Troove, a 2-sided, AI-powered platform to help students discover their passions, people, and place based on the real experiences of recent alumni and current higher education students. This episode is brought to you by AILeader.info, where you can learn all about AI specifically in a place designed for educators through 3-minute masterclasses. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Crystal Healing — or the Origins of Expected Utility Maximizers, published by Alexander Gietelink Oldenziel on June 25, 2023 on LessWrong. (Note: John discusses similar ideas here. We drafted this before he published his post, so some of the concepts might jar if you read it with his framing in mind. ) Traditionally, focus in Agent Foundations has been around the characterization of ideal agents, often in terms of coherence theorems that state that, under certain conditions capturing rational decision-making, an agent satisfying these conditions must behave as if it maximizes a utility function. In this post, we are not so much interested in characterizing ideal agents — at least not directly. Rather, we are interested in how true agents and not-so true agents may be classified and taxonomized, how agents and pseudo-agents may be hierarchically aggregated and composed out of subagents and how agents with different preferences may be formed and selected for in different training regimes. First and foremost, we are concerned with how unified goal-directed agents form from a not-quite-agentic substratum. In other words, we are interested in Selection Theorems rather than Coherence Theorems. (We take the point of view that a significant part of the content of the coherence theorems is not so much in the theorems or rationality conditions themselves but in the money-pump arguments that are used to defend the conditions.) This post concerns how expected utility maximizers may form from entities with incomplete preferences. Incomplete preferences on the road to maximizing utility The classical model of a rational agent assumes it has vNM-preferences. We assume, in particular, that the agent is complete — i.e., that for any options x,y, we have x≥y or y≥x. However, in real-life agents, we often see incompleteness — i.e., a preference for default states, or maybe a path-dependent preference, or maybe a sense that a preference between two options is yet to be defined; we will leave the precise meaning of incompleteness somewhat open for the purposes of this post. The aim of this post is to understand the selection pressures that push agents towards completeness. Here are the main reasons we consider this important: Completeness is a prerequisite for applying the money-pump arguments that justify other coherence axioms. It thereby underlies the conception of agents as (rational) goal-directed optimizers. Understanding the pressures towards completeness from a plausibly incomplete state of nature can help us understand what kinds of intelligent optimization processes are likely to arise, and in which kinds of conditions / training regimes. In particular, since something like completeness seems to be an important facet of consequentialism, understanding the pressures towards completeness helps us understand the pressures towards consequentialism. Review of "Why Subagents" Let's review John Wentworth's post "Why subagents?" . John observes that inexploitability (= not taking sure losses) is not sufficient to be a vNM expected utility maximizer. An agent with incomplete preferences can be inexploitable without being an expected utility maximizer. Although these agents are inexploitable, they can have path-dependent preferences. If John had grown up in Manchester he'd be a United fan. If he had grown up in Liverpool he'd be cracking the skulls of Manchester United fans. We could model this as a dynamical change of preferences ("preference formation"). Alternatively, we can model this as John having incomplete preferences: if he grows up in Manchester he loves United and wouldn't take the offer to switch to Liverpool. If he grows up in Liverpool he loves whatever the team in Liverpool is and doesn't switch to United. In other words, incompleteness is a frame to look at preference for...
Some feel they have made it, but most of us are a work in progress. We are all on a journey. Our text tells us God’s work in us continues until the day of Jesus Christ. That means that none of us are complete. Our text speaks about planning for a construction project. When someone builds something, they must first consider the cost and if they have the means to complete it. We look around at businesses and buildings that sit empty and incomplete. The project started with great promise, but something happened, and work stopped along the way. The partially complete projects sit as unfinished testaments to the limitation of men. We need God to help us complete. We must acknowledge that we cannot do it alone and need His help to finish the work He began.

In this episode, I chat to Matthijs Maas about pausing AI development. Matthijs is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Legal Priorities Project and a Research Affiliate at the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge. In our conversation, we focus on the possibility of slowing down or limiting the development of technology. Many people are sceptical of this possibility but Matthijs has been doing some extensive research of historical case studies of, apparently successful, technological slowdown. We discuss these case studies in some detail. You can download the episode here or listen below. May Day 2016 with Peter Linebaugh (repodcast) We're happy to share another past episode, this time from May Day 2016, about 4 months before the start of our rss feed for our podcast. I feel it's notable that this show approaches it's 13th birthday on the May 9th of this year. In this show, you'll hear an interview with autonomous Marxist historian, Peter Linebaugh on essay collection The Incomplete, True, Authentic and Wonderful History of May Day plus some music we curated at the time. To friends we've met, and to those we have yet to meet, I'd like to wish everyone a happy May Day. As we'll hear in the following hour, this day has a long celebrated history. From its many European pagan roots as a celebration of fertility as the fruits of the spring planting season began to... uh, spring forth. Then on to the repressive winter that fell early on May 3rd and 4th of 1886 in Illinois with, first, the killing of workers striking for an 8 hour work day at the McCormick Works and then the repression of anarchist and socialist workers and organizers following the bombing at Haymarket Square in Chicago of that same year. From there to the taking up of May 1st as International Workers Day by struggling groups around the world and the U.S. adoption of a sanctioned Labor Day in September of the year. To divide an international working class, The U.S. government, oppressors of that May Day 1886 sanctioned a Labor Day to be celebrated in September, declared the first of May both Law Day (an obvious testament to Irony in respect to the Haymarket 8, all jailed and 4 executed) and, for some, it's celebration as Americanism Day. Whatever that means. In 2006 & 2007, immigrants rights marches were seen on and around May Days that, for many, re-sparked the importance of this day. The protests and festivals swelled to numbers nearly unmatched in the history of protest on Turtle Island, and were accompanied by school and work walkouts and boycott days. Whether you're out there today taking direct action, in repose from the horrors of wage slavery, resisting the carceral state, gardening, dancing around a May Pole or otherwise celebrating the possibilities of this year to come when, hell, we might as well end this system of exclusion and extraction: We wish you a fire on your tongue, love in your heart and free land beneath you. .. ... . .. Featured Tracks: The International by Ani DiFranco & Utah Philips The Earth Is Our Mother by Oi Polloi from Fuaim Catha Surrounded by Matador from Taken I Wish That They'd Sack Me by Chumbawamba from The Boy Bands Have Won Addio a Lugano by Pietro Gori (performed by Gruppo Z on Canti Anarchici Italiani) IO Pan by Spiral Bound from Leap Your Lazy Bounds 9-5ers Anthem by Aesop Rock from Labor Days
