Friends! Have you gotten my new book It's Time to Talk to Your Kids About Porn yet? If not, listen to today's guest give a review of the book at the end of the podcast and be inspired to get your copy right here today! I met today's guest, Aubrey McGowan, at a home school mom conference called Wild and Free! What a fun way to meet this guy. Aubrey and his wife Jen are tremendous musicians, and they have performed at many of the Wild and Free conferences I have been a part of. Aubrey is also creative in other ways: he's a passionate communicator and a gifted writer. In today's episode we are talking about Aubrey's new book, Filter the Noise: how to Hear God's Voice in a Culture of Chaos. We have so much noise in our life--the noise of the physical world, the noise of the digital world and the inner noise—those voices in our head that so often tell us things that aren't true. Aubrey asks the question: what does Christ say to this? While the world tells us we always need more, Christ tells us He is enough. Aubrey shares with us the practice he outlines in the book that can help us filter the noise we don't want or need in this life. But Aubrey reminds us: “The power is in Jesus, not in the practice” This practice is a way to point people to Jesus Friends, this is a longer than usual episode, but when Aubrey gets fired up he brings the wisdom and the fire and I don't want to stop him! So sit down, grab a cup of coffee and be inspired by what Aubrey shares here. Let's go! In this gripping episode of Gangland Wire, Gary Jenkins sits down with Ted Pryor, a man whose life story is a rollercoaster of discipline, danger, and redemption. Ted's journey begins in law enforcement, where his martial arts expertise earned him respect among police departments. But a fateful decision led him down a very different path—one that plunged him into the high-stakes world of South Florida smuggling. Ted recounts how a family member introduced him to the trade, starting with a seemingly simple marijuana operation. Before long, he found himself entangled in a dangerous underworld, rubbing shoulders with major players in Miami's drug scene. As a bodyguard for a notorious trafficker, he balanced his life as a kickboxing champion with the risks of organized crime, struggling to reconcile these two identities. The stakes escalated when law enforcement finally caught up with him. Ted shares the harrowing details of a dramatic police chase and his courtroom battle to reclaim his future. His firsthand insights into the legal system, the pressures of incarceration, and the turning points that led him to change his life make for a compelling narrative. Ted has now dedicated himself to a new mission—helping at-risk youth break free from the cycle of crime. Through his foundation, he provides educational opportunities for underprivileged children, believing early intervention is key to keeping them off the streets. His story of transformation, resilience, and giving back is inspiring. Ted's book, Three Times World Champ, chronicles his extraordinary life, with all proceeds supporting his charitable efforts. Transcript [0:00] Well, hey, all you wiretapers, welcome back here in the studio of Gagland Wire. It's great to have you back. I have a very interesting character, if you will, a guy that's lived more lives than you could believe. You know, I'm Gary Jenkins, a retired Kansas City Police Intelligence Unit detective, and I have this podcast now, and I've been putting out these shows for about seven or eight years, guys, and I really appreciate all you guys that have been with me from the start. There's several of you I know and I've gotten to know been with me from the start. So go on to my Facebook group or make comments on my YouTube page. And let me get to know a little more about each one of you, because I always respond to any kind of a comment on that or the Facebook page, Facebook group. So we have Ted Pryor. Ted, welcome. [0:48] Thank you, Gary. Thanks for having me on. Now, guys, Ted's written a book. You know, I get a lot of authors on there. Saves me doing the research, Ted. I have to admit, it saves me doing a lot of research. You guys know your stuff. The name of the book is Three Times World Champ, the death-defying true story of a kickboxer turned drug smuggler turned business icon. And believe me, guys, that is J. Ted Pryor. What a hell of a story from the middleweight kickboxing champion of the world to world champion marijuana smuggler down in South Florida and right in the heart of drug smuggling territory, which is, you know, really carved out a niche down there. But later on, businessman and a chef.
Imagine you're in a bar, holding forth about the news of the day–maybe it's 1985 and, like everyone else, you're talking about Iran-Contra, Oliver North, and the CIA. As you signal to the bartender that you're ready for another, an unassuming, somewhat chubby guy next to you smiles and says, “You really want to know how all of that went down?” Then he begins a two-hour monologue that gets crazier every twenty minutes. Mike and Dan talk about why the immediacy of first-person narrative works so well here and why it wouldn't work at all with other people's stories. A Note from James: So, I'm out rock climbing, but I really wanted to take a moment to introduce today's guest: Roger Reaves. This guy is unbelievable. He's arguably the biggest drug smuggler in history, having worked with Pablo Escobar and others through the '70s, '80s, and even into the '90s. Roger's life is like something out of a movie—he spent 33 years in jail and has incredible stories about the drug trade, working with people like Barry Seal, and the U.S. government's involvement in the smuggling business. Speaking of Barry Seal, if you've seen American Made with Tom Cruise, there's a wild scene where Barry predicts the prosecutor's next move after being arrested—and sure enough, it happens just as he said. Well, Barry Seal actually worked for Roger. That's how legendary this guy is. Roger also wrote a book called Smuggler about his life. You'll want to check that out after hearing these crazy stories. Here's Roger Reaves. Episode Description: Roger Reaves shares his extraordinary journey from humble beginnings on a farm to becoming one of the most notorious drug smugglers in history. He discusses working with Pablo Escobar, surviving harrowing escapes from law enforcement, and the brutal reality of imprisonment and torture. Roger reflects on his decisions, the human connections that shaped his life, and the lessons learned from a high-stakes career. Whether you're here for the stories or the insights into an underground world, this episode offers a rare glimpse into a life few could imagine. What You'll Learn: How Roger Reaves became involved in drug smuggling and built connections with major players like Pablo Escobar and Barry Seal. The role of the U.S. government in the drug trade and its surprising intersections with Roger's operations. Harrowing tales of near-death experiences, including shootouts, plane crashes, and daring escapes. The toll a life of crime takes on family, faith, and personal resilience. Lessons learned from decades of high-risk decisions and time behind bars. Ken Behr is a professional drug smuggler. Grass, snow, smack, dope - he's got it all, or at least he did in the 1970's, back when he was flying product by the gross from Colombia to South Florida on a rickety pondhopper into makeshift runways. Back then Ken had no idea that the war on drugs was about to explode - and that Ronald Reagan's crackdown on trafficking would lead to a swift rise in prices for Ken's private operation. But all that glitters isn't always gold, and after Ken got busted by the DEA, he cut a deal to work two years as an undercover agent to avoid a 55-year prison sentence. Since then, Ken's wised up in more ways than one - nowadays he's settled down a bit, though he did have a brief spin as an open wheel race car driver, along with having penned a memoir of his travels called 'One Step Over the Line: Confessions of a Marijuana Mercenary.' It's a fascinating dive deep into the world of drug smuggling, judicial manipulation, social engineering, and the longest war in U.S. history - the War on Drugs. Helium, that we use to blow up parade floats and birthday balloons, is a uniquely one-of-a-kind element. That's not necessarily a good thing. What if we lived in a world where we wanted for nothing, where our every wish and need was cared for? Scientists ran an experiment and, as always, things did not go as expected. Ever tried to sneak a drink into the movies or some candy to a ballgame? There's always that one guy who takes things too far. Part 2: Dr. Phil goes to the Arizona and Texas borders looking for solutions. We are just a few days away from the 2024 election and there's one topic that's got everyone from Washington to Main Street talking…the border crisis. Both sides agree that work needs to be done to secure our southern border. Dr. Phil first heads to Arizona to find out why there is a super-highway for illegal crossings down there. It's been nicknamed the "Smuggler's Highway" …right on Interstate 10, which runs through California and Arizona. It's become the most popular route for smugglers from Mexico. But Sheriff's deputies in Pinal County, say it isn't just cartels smuggling migrants…it's American teenagers. Right in the thick of it all, Sheriff Mark Lamb says the drugs and people being trafficked through this "highway" are ending up in cities all across America. In fiscal year 2023 alone, Arizona had more than 775,000 illegal border crossers. That's a whole lot of people slipping through the cracks. Sheriff Lamb tells Dr. Phil how he attempts to wrangle this situation. Plus Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels tells Dr. Phil that in the last 31 months, there have been 500 to 600 pursuits coming through his rural county. Dr. Phil talks to the Vice President of the Border Agent Council, Art Del Cueto, who says the media is not reporting much about Arizona's border issues. Art says he has solutions if anyone would listen. And we head to Eagle Pass Texas where Dr. Phil spoke to several people working on the frontlines. He asked them THE hard questions that you won't see anywhere else. And US Southern Border Expert, Jason Jones says human trafficking at the border is the largest US intelligence failure since 9-11. If you are looking for answers to your questions about the border, this episode has the answers. Dr. Phil goes on a drive-along with Sheriffs on Arizona's “Smuggler's Highway”. This border situation has become a political powder keg, with both sides of the aisle using it as ammunition in this upcoming election in just a few weeks. But tonight, we're focusing on the Arizona border. With 378 miles of shared border with Mexico, divided into the Tucson and Yuma sectors, Dr. Phil meets up with Sheriff Mark Lamb who offers to take him on a “drive-along” on that stretch of road where high-speed chases happen every day putting everyone on the road at risk. And sometimes, it ends tragically. Take the story of Wanda Sitoski. Her daughter, Valarie sits down with Dr. Phil to talk about how her mother's life was cut short when a 16-year-old American smuggler running from the law crashed right into her…killing her instantly. And Dr. Phil meets Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels who says he and his team are trying to protect 6219 square miles of rugged terrain.
