On December 6, 1977, a car pulled past the conspicuous “No Trespassing” and “Beware of Dog” signs at the perimeter of Arthur Allen's oceanside ranch, about ten miles south of Bandon. Three men got out and approached the house. Allen, who had obviously been watching them approach, promptly emerged from the house and ordered them off the property. “We're from the Bureau of Land Management,” one of them said. “We wanted to talk to you about negotiating to buy an easement across your land so visitors can access BLM property on the New River.” Allen relented and let the men approach the house, where he demanded to see their identification. Two of them promptly whipped out their wallets and showed their badges; the third, whose name was Larry Gano, said he'd left his wallet at home. It was a lucky break for Gano that Allen didn't push it. Because he wasn't with the BLM. He was with the United States Customs Service. And he was there because he was pretty sure Allen was running a smuggling operation. Spoiler alert: Oh yes, he was.... Laetrile (or Vitamin B17, amygdalin) comes from apricot seeds and has seen millions of examples since the 1970s of "miraculous" recovery. Rick Hill went on a 5 year program but felt better within only 2 weeks of treatment. When he returned home to the United States and the Mayo Clinic staff saw him, people's jaws dropped. He was supposed to be dead. In 1975, the American Cancer Institute came after him only for Mayo Clinic to stand up for his in a letter proving he did indeed face a deadly cancer and now he was cured of it. Beating cancer naturally is possible and indeed there are countless cases of this. This is important to understand in an age where we see a record breaking cancer epidemic break out. Rick was forced to smuggle apricot seeds or laetrile into the United States from Mexico due to restrictions put on doctors and many arrests over the issue in the 70s, making Rick a smuggler solely because he wanted to stay alive. Today the San Diego city planning committee will discuss possible changes to San Diego's ADU program. A judge denied a developer's request to stop the plans for a safe parking lot for homeless people near Liberty Station. A Mexican citizen accused of smuggling a dozen parakeets into the U.S. is facing federal charges.

In January a boat carrying migrants across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe was miraculously rescued by a fishing trawler after two weeks lost at sea. At least 20 people died from starvation, dehydration and hypothermia. Many of those on the boat - Pakistani men - were promised safe, legal routes to Europe by the smugglers but that was far from their reality. BBC Trending tracks the digital footprint of one of the suspected smugglers wanted for deaths on this very migrant boat. On TikTok, trivial videos depict his lifestyle - one of money, nice restaurants and a lot of travel. But these videos reveal much more about the smuggler's operations. What a hell of a story from the middleweight kickboxing champion of the world to world champion marijuana smuggler down in South Florida and right in the heart of drug smuggling territory, which is, you know, really carved out a niche down there. Ken Behr is a professional drug smuggler. Grass, snow, smack, dope - he's got it all, or at least he did in the 1970's, back when he was flying product by the gross from Colombia to South Florida on a rickety pondhopper into makeshift runways.
