The journey toward spiritual wholeness often demands confronting our divided hearts. In this compelling episode, we dive deep into Hosea 7:8's mysterious metaphor: "Ephraim is a cake not turned" - a powerful image that speaks directly to Christians caught between devotion to God and attraction to worldly pursuits.Using this ancient baking metaphor as our foundation, we explore six critical manifestations of spiritual division that plague believers today. From lukewarmness that makes us spiritually repulsive to hypocrisy that makes us modern-day Pharisees, we examine how attempting to live with one foot in God's kingdom and one foot in the world leaves us spiritually half-baked.The consequences of divided loyalty go beyond mere inconsistency. Through Scripture passages including Revelation 3:16, Matthew 6:24, 1 Kings 18:21, and 1 John 2:15-17, we reveal how serving two masters creates spiritual instability, hinders our prayers, and ultimately pulls us away from authentic relationship with God. Just as a pancake left too long on one side will burn, Christians who spend excessive time engaged with worldly pursuits risk getting spiritually burned. This episode isn't about condemnation but clarity. We all struggle with competing priorities and attractions, but God desires our wholehearted commitment rather than a relationship of convenience. By examining our hearts honestly and committing fully to Christ, we can experience the fulfillment that comes only through complete devotion. Are you fully committed to your spiritual journey, or are you trying to maintain a comfortable position with divided loyalties? Join us for this thought-provoking exploration of what it means to turn fully toward God and away from the distractions that threaten to burn us.Thank you for listening! In this episode, Pastor Jeff Christianson explores the life-transforming direction found in Philippians 3:12–14 and Colossians 3:1–3—pressing forward and looking upward. Contrasting the biblical call to focus on Christ with the inward and backward methods of secular counseling, Pastor Jeff emphasizes the sufficiency of Scripture and the person of Christ in our sanctification journey. Drawing from years of ministry and mentorship under Pastor Chuck Smith and Pastor Bob Hoekstra, he reminds us that true spiritual growth comes not from introspection, but from setting our minds on things above. The salient focus of our discussion centers on the distinct dichotomy between biblical counseling and its secular counterpart. We elucidate that biblical counseling is fundamentally the application of God's Word to the complexities of human existence, thereby fostering genuine transformation rather than mere behavioral modification. Our esteemed guest, Rick Thomas, shares insights on the historical context of counseling, highlighting that biblical counseling predates secular approaches, which have increasingly infiltrated the church's understanding of mental health. We emphasize the necessity for believers to grasp the sufficiency of Scripture in addressing life's myriad challenges, as opposed to relying solely on secular methodologies that lack a foundation in divine truth. If you want your words to carry power, you have to stop speaking like a beggar and start praying like a BELIEVER.I think so often, we talk TO God and not WITH God. So often we forget that its a two way relationship. A two way conversation and that just as much as God desires to hear from us, He also desires that we hear from Him. Stop praying uncertain prayers about things God has already promised like healing, provision, and peace. Know His will and declare it. 1 John 5:14 says “this is the confidence we have in approaching God; that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 2.We don't need to pray “God be with me..” You don't need to ask God to be with you, He promised He already is. Instead thank him for his present and walk in it. Hebrews 13:5 says I will never leave you or forsake you. Declare God is with you now and always. I walk with His presence, not apart from it.

What if anxiety didn't have to be your constant companion? What if God's command to "be anxious for nothing" wasn't impossible but actually the pathway to freedom?Anxiety grips countless believers today, manifesting through racing hearts, sleepless nights, and minds clouded with fear. Yet the Bible offers a profound antidote that looks nothing like the world's solutions. Through an exploration of Philippians 4:1-7, Luisa and Mike unpack what spiritual stability truly means and how it serves as God's answer to our worries. This episode delves deep into understanding anxiety from both psychological and spiritual perspectives. We examine how anxiety differs from fear, why it affects us physically and mentally, and most importantly, how God's word equips us to overcome it. The conversation reveals six powerful steps toward spiritual stability: cultivating church unity, maintaining joy regardless of circumstances, embracing humility, resting in confident faith, practicing thankful prayer, and receiving God's incomprehensible peace.Perhaps most striking is the counterintuitive approach of thanking God for our trials. As Luisa shares her personal journey through cancer, we witness how choosing Christ over fear produces a peace that "transcends all understanding." This isn't merely positive thinking—it's divine protection for our hearts and minds.Whether you're currently walking through dark valleys or simply seeking to strengthen your spiritual foundations, this message offers both practical steps and profound hope. Discover why the solution to anxiety isn't found in human techniques or therapies but in a relationship with the sovereign God who orchestrates everything for our good and His glory.Thank you for listening! What happens when someone who's been teaching the Bible for 50 years sits down to talk about gospel clarity, gender dynamics in preaching, and why justification still needs explaining? In this episode, Mike Neglia is joined by Elyse Fitzpatrick—author, speaker, and theologian—for a deeply honest and theologically rich conversation. They discuss the subtle ways a “soft prosperity gospel” sneaks into evangelical preaching, the heartbreaking lack of gospel clarity among many churchgoers, and how male preachers can better represent the women in Scripture and the women in their churches.Elyse shares stories from decades of ministry, opens up about teaching through pain, and gives a practical challenge to pastors: listen more. Ask for input. Especially from wise women. And never assume you've taught the gospel enough.Whether you're a pastor, teacher, or church leader, this episode will challenge you to preach Christ more clearly, teach more thoughtfully, and love more deeply.Elyse holds a certificate in biblical counseling from CCEF (San Diego) and an M.A. in Biblical Counseling from Trinity Theological Seminary. She has authored more than 25 books on daily living and the Christian life. Elyse loves to proclaim the good news of the gospel: That Jesus, the Second Person of the Trinity, perfectly obeyed all the Law in our place, suffered in isolation and agony as punishment for our sin, died, and then rose again, all for our justification.A frequent speaker at national conferences, she has been married for over 50 years and has three adult children and six really adorable grandchildren. Today's episode marks the start of our in-depth series on the potential harms of faith-based counseling, examining how scripture can sometimes be misused as a tool of control rather than healing. Approximately one-quarter of U.S. adults—about 28 percent—identify as evangelical Christians, and many turn to church-run counseling rather than licensed therapists. But what are the consequences when Christian nationalism, purity culture, and patriarchy influence the guidance given, leading to harmful practices and the reinforcement of abusive systems? In this first episode, I am joined by Peter Bell, host of the Sons of Patriarchy podcast, to explore how “Bible-only” therapy often silences survivors, how patriarchal theology shapes advice on relationships and mental health, and the critical warning signs when pastoral care shifts into manipulation and control. This conversation serves as the foundation for the important discussions that follow throughout the series.
Pastor Jeff Christianson teaches on the essential role of the Holy Spirit in biblical counseling, based on 1 Corinthians 2:12-13. He contrasts human wisdom with the Spirit's power, reminding us that true healing comes from God's Word, not worldly ideas. Biblical counselors are called to speak God's truth, not popular psychology, and trust the Holy Spirit for real change. For many, church is a sanctuary, a place of healing, guidance, and community. But for others, church can represent pain, betrayal, and confusion. Whether it's due to witnessing a leadership failure, experiencing cultures of legalism, exclusion, or spiritual abuse - church hurt can leave lasting scars that challenge not only a person's trust in others, but also their relationship with God.How do people who have experienced these things overcome their feelings? How do we grieve the failures of people we respected and loved? How do we confront bitterness and what in some cases may be justification for personalsin? How do we find the strength to forgive and move on in our pursuit of Christ? In this episode, we're joined by Jonathan Kindler, professor of Biblical Counseling at the Living Faith Bible Institute, who has both experienced “church hurt” firsthand and dedicated much of his work to helping others navigate it. Together, we explore why these painful experiences happen in places meant for love and acceptance, and what people can do to overcome them. We also look at how leaders should respond when people in our congregations have experienced a trial or hardship within the church setting.Visit https://www.lfbi.org/learnmore
