Sense of smell In terms of the number of distinguishable stimuli, our sense of smell can detect thousands of different odours. Additionally, smell is closely linked to memory and emotion. During the COVID epidemic many sufferers lost their sense of smell, and speaking for myself I've occasionally experienced phantom smells - quite often dog poo! What do smells have to do with Easter? Death smells bad Perhaps you remember Martha's comment when Jesus ordered that the stone blocking Lazarus' tomb be removed: “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odour, for he has been there four days.”” (John 11:39 NIV11) It's not surprising Martha was reluctant to open the tomb. After four days of death, she knew her brother's body would smell bad. Spices were used to reduce the bad smell. Consider what happened when Jesus was buried: “Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.” (John 19:39-40 NIV11) The women who followed Jesus planned to finish the work Nicodemus had started: “When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body.” (Mark 16:1-2) Death smells bad. There is no way around it. It smells bad to human noses and to human hearts. The finality of it, the emptiness of it, the uselessness of it frustrates us. What is it for? No one knows — except Jesus. Resurrection life smells good When Peter and John reached the tomb they noticed something. The wrappings were there, but the body was not. “[John] bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus' head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.” (John 20:3-8 NIV11) Soon afterwards, Mary sees Jesus. She does not recognise him, thinking he is the gardener. Then he speaks, and she realises it is him. What does she not see? What did the Apostles not see? Spices. There is no mention of spices. The angels in the tomb don't mention them, nor do the Apostles or any of the witnesses. Why no spices? Because there is no bad smell!  God smells the good  The writers of Scripture often mix literal and metaphorical ideas. Themes like ‘light and darkness', ‘water', ‘wilderness', ‘the shepherd and his flock' and ‘the garden' have both physical and spiritual meanings. The same is true of good and bad smells. Noah's sacrifice after exiting the ark is described like this: “The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood…” (Gen. 8:21) Our prayers smell like incense to God: “…the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God's people.” (Revelation 5:8) Our sacrifices and prayers create a pleasant aroma to God. But how do we smell to our neighbours? “But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ's triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life.” (2 Corinthians 2:14-16 NIV11) We smell like Jesus  Our lives remind people of the Son of God so much that it is as if we smell like him.We are the aroma of death for those who wish for no change. In other words, we do not smell like hope to them because it is not the kind of hope they want. However, to those who want change, desire to be different and who are looking for meaning, purpose and healing, we smell like life. What kind of life? Resurrection life. Eternal life. New creation life. Christ's life.  Here's an unusual definition of a disciple of Jesus - ‘Someone who smells like Jesus.' What do you think? Is that a reasonable claim? If so, what does it mean? Let me offer some words and Scriptures for reflection, discussion and prayer. This is Prince Handley … the creative glory of God is going to ignite your soul today! MUSIC Are you willing to do the works of Jesus? Someone within the sound of my voice today is going to be used of God to reach every nation, every tribe, every tongue, every dialect of the world on Planet Earth for Messiah Jesus before he comes back. The world has yet to see what God can do through the person who allows the breath of God's creativity to capture them. That person will not copy the works of men. They will not copy the works of ministries nor of ministers nor of rabbis, but they will abandon every fiber of their being to the Holy Spirit. Would you be willing to do the works of Messiah Jesus? He'll reward you when He returns to take His People away. You may say, “I'm only a housewife. I'm only a rabbi or pastor of one community. I'm only a school student. I'm too young. I'm too old. I don't have the education. I don't have the ability. I have too many idiosyncrasies. I don't have the right personality makeup. I'm handicapped.” All you need is to surrender every fibre of your being to the Holy Spirit … and all the Holy Spirit wants is you! MUSIC The Holy Bible tells us the Tubalcain, one of the early descendants of Adam, was an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron. He had a spirit of craftsmanship. It was a gift of God. When men were chosen to construct the house of God in the Old Testament, God gave them a Spirit of Craftsmanship. In the same sense today, God can give you a Spirit of Creativity. Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) came to earth to buy you with His own Blood that He shed on the cross-stake. With His own blood he bought you for God. He paid for all your sins and for all your imperfections with His blood. And if you receive him as your substitute, he will come to live inside you by the Holy Spirit: The Creator. Since God is The Creator—since he lives inside you—he can create through you. He wants to create through you. You may have never been a creative person in your life. You may have never been skilled in art, in writing, in manufacturing, or any type of creative workmanship. That's good. You're just the kind of person God is looking for. As a matter of fact, you're the most likely candidate for God to use ... to create through, to communicate the healing love of Messiah Jesus to the world. Rabbi Shaul (the Apostle Paul) said, “When I am weak, then I am strong.” God told Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you.” It's enough … for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Many times it's the person who appears to be the strong athlete who fails to lean on God. Many times it's the person who appears to be the successful politician who fails to lean on God, and many times it's the person who seems to be the excellent minister, rabbi, or priest who fails to lean on God. Their apparent success turns out to be their failure. But quite often it's the person who seems to be a failure who leans on God. That person knows his or her own weaknesses. They know their human limitations. They know that even the strong points of their seemingly weak life are only gifts from God … and that the same Lord who freely gives can freely take away! That person's apparent failure turns out to be their success. The one that was first ended up last … and the one who was last ended up first. Right now, the Spirit of God Almighty is stirring your soul. God has a message for you that can change the course of nations. This is God's day in the earth and the creative glory of God is going to ignite you. God is getting ready to change your life. Don't worry about whether you've ever been creative. God is going to create through you. He'll do new things that have never been done before. He'll make you a creative instrument. You may become one of the world's greatest advertisers for Messiah Jesus. Remember, God says His Word will never come back void. You may become one of the world's greatest manufacturers for the LORD. I know a man who manufacturers plastic bobbles (floaters) in his backyard, and inside these little plastic parts can be placed portions of the Word of God as they're dropped on the oceans. They can be floated into Russia, into China, into Communist and Islamic countries. You don't know what God may show you to do. That Breath of God's Spirit is all you need. You may become the world's greatest artist, writer, media producer for the LORD. You may become the world's most creative pastor, minister, rabbi or priest. I know a housewife who spent only a few moments one time doing something the Spirit of God directed her to … and she reached millions for Messiah. Don't remember the former things. Don't consider the things that are old. God will do a new thing in your life. It will spring forth. You'll know it. God will even make a way in the wilderness of your environment. After all, he makes rivers in the desert. The Bible tells us in Isaiah Chapter 42, verse 9:   “Behold, the former things have come to pass, And new things I declare; Before they spring forth I tell you of them.” You'll know them. God says today, “The breath of God is upon you to anoint you for a creative work in the earth.” Will you do the works of Jesus! What should you do if you feel spiritually tired? In this episode I talk about a couple reasons Jesus shared that may explain why you're feeling spiritually tired. The remedy in both cases is that you give it a rest, bro! Find your rest in Jesus - and only in Jesus. So whether it's you or someone you know who is starting to feel drained and spiritually tired, this episode should provide some encouragement to overcome that feeling and get you back to where Jesus wants you to be.
