In the Spring of 1993, three eight-year-old boys were murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas. And immediately, thanks to outlandish, paranoid Satanic Panic notions, investigative suspicion fell on a local eighteen-year-old, Damien Echols, ignorantly believed to be the leader of a local Satanic cult, and two of his teen friends, falsely believed to be his followers... The West Memphis Three were three teenagers from West Memphis, Arkansas who were wrongfully accused of killing three boys in an alleged and completely unsubstantiated ritual. On May 5, 1993, Michael Moore, Steve Branch and Christopher Byers were reported missing around 7 p.m. by John Mark Byers, the adoptive father of one of the children. After 8 p.m. the police, neighbors and a search and rescue team canvased the area focusing on the Robin Hood Hills area where the kids were last seen. The next day, around 1:45 p.m., Parole Officer Steve Jones spotted a black shoe floating in a muddy creek in Robin Hood Hills. With another search, they found the three boys' bodies naked and hogtied with their own shoelaces. For show notes go to www.nvusalien.com

May 5th, 1993 was a tragic day for so many people in West Memphis Arkansas as three eight-year-old boys (Stevie Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore) went missing . By the next morning, instead of panic, the town felt palpable fear with the discover that the young second-graders had been brutally and senselessly murdered. By 1994, three local teens were in prison, convicted of the murders; but the story hasn't ended there. This is part 3 of our series in which we examine the trials and convictions as well as explore various theories concerning who might be the perpetrator(s). In this week's episode, we speak with Terry Hobbs, step-father of Stevie Branch, who is currently the focus of guilt in the court of public opinion. It mostly focuses on John Mark Byers, the father of one of the victims who has grown increasingly obsessed with the West Memphis Three, and on a support group who is convinced that the three are innocent. "On May 5, 1993, second-graders Christopher Byers, Stevie Branch, and Michael Moore disappeared from their West Memphis, Arkansas, homes. The following afternoon, their nude, beaten, and bound bodies were discovered in a drainage ditch less than a mile away. After a troublesome confession, three local teenagers, later dubbed the “West Memphis Three,” were arrested, tried, and convicted in early 1994. Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley received life sentences, while ringleader Damien Echols went to death row. Three years later, the documentary film “Paradise Lost” premiered on HBO, and the effect on viewers was dramatic. Many became skeptical of the verdicts and also felt one of the fathers of the victims was a better suspect—John Mark Byers. In Untying the Knot, author Greg Day tells the true story of John Mark Byers and the about-face he made to free the men convicted of the crime. Day exposes the propaganda campaign used to convince a gullible public that Byers was complicit in the deaths of his wife and son. Based on court transcripts and hours of personal interviews, Untying the Knot explores all the case evidence while interweaving dialogues and statements. It traces the life of Byers from his roots in rural Arkansas, to his son’s murder and the death of his wife, to his ultimate imprisonment in 1999. It reveals a man redeemed by prison and whose change of heart changed his life. UNTYING THE KNOT: John Mark Byers and the West Memphis Three-Greg Day
