Due to unforeseen scheduling craziness, we were unable to record an episode this week, so thought we'd drop one of our favorites from the vault! In this bonus episode, Kristin tells Mogab all about the Satanic Panic of the 80's and 90's, starting with the book Michelle Remembers, a controversial "memoir" detailing repressed memories of satanic ritual abuse, and culminating in the McMartin Preschool Trial where several employees at the preschool were accused of performing satanic ritual abuse on children (spoiler... none of it was true). Send me a DM here (it doesn't let me respond), OR email me: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.comToday I'm honored to introduce to you: survivor and child abuse advocate, podcaster, woman of God, independent researcher, investigative and educator, and hero: Jaymee Jay!A little bit about Jaymee in case you missed her first episode Jaymee is someone I'm really excited for you all to meet. Although Jaymee's upbringing wasn't without it's dysfunction, Jaymee has always been an incredibly intelligent and empathetic person who has excelled in many endeavors she has taken on in life. She could literally be doing anything else with her time, energy and voice, and instead - she chooses to volunteer her time researching and educating on topics such as SRA and DID as well as being a survivor advocate. I can't tell you how much I admire Jaymee for stepping into a fight she could have simply studied from the sidelines and never spoken publicly about. I consider her to be a hero for braving speaking out as a survivor ally knowing it puts a target on her back and despite it being something she hasn't made a single penny for. She is one of my heroes for her bravery and courage and I know all of you listening on the other side of the screen who are OR aren't survivors will find - and have found - her just as awe-inspiring, courageous, and incredible as I do!The first time Jaymee was on, we did a deep dive into the Satanic Panic and an important book in history called ‘Michelle Remembers' that really kicked off this massive coverup period of the MSM denying the existence of satanic ritual abuse and beginning the ‘conspiracy theory' lies around it. Jaymee drew out the timeline of the satanic panic and shared the impact this time in history had on survivors and the survivor movement and what we can do to make sure it never happens again.Today, Jaymee is back to talk more about the implications that have happened as a result of the satanic panic time period including discussions about survivor advocacy, the law in regard to SRA, secondary victimization of survivors who come forward, infiltration of the survivor movement and so much more. With more and more survivors coming forward to speak out, the traps along the way can often be just as occulted and confusing as the abuses they are exposing. Speaking out is not without it's personal implications - and we have heard it all on this podcast with the playbook of punishment, retaliation and intimidation tactics used on survivors turned whistleblowers. And in order to progress this movement forward in a healthy and safe way, I believe survivors need to be aware of the new playbook that exists online and on social media. Now, perpetrators don't have to show up at your doorstep to intimidate, gaslight or gangstalk you. They can do all this and more right from their phone or by inviting you on a popular podcast where they can intimidate or gaslight you. It's important to note that this episode isn't to cause fear - but rather to give you tools to help navigate this new terrain while providing safe advocacy and spaces for survivors to speak out as they come forward. Disclosure can cause vulnerabilities, and abusers can spot them a mile away. And just because someone has millions of followers doesn't mean they are safe or that they have the best intentions in mind for survivors. If we can do our due diligence to exercise our discernment, then we can work as a community to ensure we are rallying around survivors and providing safety for them - even amongst unsafe territory or people. Transparency and being well-informed of the risks, dangers, and traps of disclosure can help to make sure we don't ever allow for another false ‘satanic panic' narrative to arise and take holSupport the show
Episode 340: In the early 1980s, a wave of fear with its origins in Canada, swept across North America, igniting what would become known as the Satanic Panic. This moral hysteria, fueled by sensationalized media reports and dubious claims of widespread satanic ritual abuse, had its roots in a controversial book published in 1980 titled “Michelle Remembers.” As the panic spread, it manifested in several high-profile cases across Canada. One of the most notorious incidents occurred in Martensville, Saskatchewan, where unfounded allegations of ritual abuse at a local daycare center led to multiple arrests and a community torn apart by suspicion and fear. Other cases emerged in various provinces, each feeding into the growing narrative of a vast, underground network of satanic cults preying on innocent children.

Today I'm honored to introduce to you: survivor and child abuse advocate, podcaster, woman of God, independent researcher, investigative and educator, and hero: Jaymee Jay!Jaymee is someone I'm really excited for you all to meet. She is one of my heroes for her bravery and courage and I know all of you listening on the other side of the screen who are OR aren't survivors will find her just as awe-inspiring, courageous, and incredible as I do!Today, one of the big things Jaymee is going to educate us on is a particular moment in time that preceded the Satanic Panic. A testimony and story about a woman named Michelle Smith who - along with her therapist - began whistleblowing the horrors she remembered as an adult that she experienced as a child being heinously abused by members of a satanic cult. This case is extremely important for you and I to know about because it broke ground for victims, survivors and whistleblowers all over the world to have a voice, and also was ground zero for the eventual discreditation, propaganda, and orchestrated cover-up of satanic ritual abuse that we know today as the ‘Satanic Panic'. There is an active smear campaign coming back today to haunt survivors that is again pushing the satanic panic narrative and it's important we are aware of this so we can continue to stand together and be louder than those who are dedicated to covering up the truth. Satanic Ritual Abuse was given a spotlight for the first time in history because of Michelle and is still able to be talked about today because of her courage to speak out when no one else would. Her book, ‘Michelle Remembers' was the first account of SRA to go viral in a time when the internet didn't even exist and the ‘Satanic Panic' that followed is the reason we are all still fighting today for survivor's voices to be heard. Jaymee's expose on this important case serves as a reminder that what we are doing in the present wouldn't be possible without those who paved the way in the past - and I hope we can all take inspiration from this episode today to remember Michelle when we grow tired and weary and to fight for her as much as she fought for every survivor to be able to speak out today. Anyone who grew up in the 80's remembers the Satanic Panic as a phenomenon that couldn't be escaped. The news and talk shows were constantly covering new allegations and investigations into Satanic Cult Rituals as well as stories of victims and the accused. Everything from music, corporations, cartoons, and toys were in league with Satan. But did you know that the whole spectacle could be traced back to 2 people and 1 book? Today, we'll be discussing Michelle Remembers, the book that kicked off the Satanic Panic as well as the infamous therapy sessions that inspired it, some of the abuse and rituals that allegedly happened, and some of the real victims of this cultural craze. We'll also touch on the film Satan Wants You, which documented all this insanity! Do you remember your childhood? Do you remember what happened last week? Are you sure? This week, Rubin takes over and discusses the impetus for the 80's Satanic Ritual Abuse panic; the book Michelle Remembers. A harrowing tale of a child being dragged into the seedy underworld of Satanic Cults and the torture forced upon her that turned out to be nothing but implanted memories from her therapist and husband(?) Dr Lawrence Pazder.
The Satanic Panic - a phenomenon of the 1980s and '90s - was a terrifying rollercoaster for all involved. Accusations of child sacrifice ruined lives as the public sought answers for why everyone suddenly seemed to have been victims of Satanists and Satanic rituals. Amplified by the Catholic Church, law enforcement and daytime TV, rumours of these cults made their way through fearful communities, creating a witch hunt for anyone believed to be part of alleged Satanic worship groups. At the centre of this conspiracy was a book called "Michelle Remembers," a memoir published in 1980 by Canadian psychiatrist Larry Pazder and his patient Michelle Smith in which Smith's recounted false memories where she was abducted and tortured by a satanic cult in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The new documentary, "Satan Wants You," describes the experiences of the satanic panic, how the memoir (,Michelle Remembers,) sparked it, and exposes how a lie from a Canadian patient and doctor became an enduring myth. The film was featured at HotDocs and SXSW, and its filmmakers Sean Horlor and Steve J. Adams speak to Colin Ellis and Nam Kiwanuka on this episode of TVO's On Docs podcast. They dissect the chilling story and production behind "Satan Wants You," and the satanic panic phenomenon of the 1980s and '90s. We told you things the way that they seemed, now it's time to get into things the way that they actually were.In this episode we try and gain a broader understanding of the Satanic Panic and it's origins (from preschools to memoirs to rock music) while examining how this same search for satan narrowed the murder investigation by the West Memphis Police Department in 1993We learn about the way polygraphs were used in the investigation and why they held so much weight for the police and some of the people who may have gotten off without much questioning. We also include passages from Damien's book Life After Death and the book Jason Baldwin helped write with Mara Leverit, Dark Spell. We end this episode with a confession from Jesse Misskelley and the arrests of Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin. There's so much to unpack in this episode and this case!Sources:Jenkins, P (1992). Few cultural phenomena of the 1980s were as as destructive or widespread as the Satanic Panic. The Satanic Panic led to arrests, ruined reputations, and more than 12,000 unsubstantiated reports of Satanic ritual abuse that were reportedly “recovered” via the now discredited practice of “recovery memory therapy.” While the Satanic Panic is now largely discussed with derision, there was a period in time when fear of devil worshippers was earnestly reported about on the nightly news – and Patient Zero for the Satanic Panic was a Vancouver Island woman named Michelle Smith. Michelle and her psychiatrist Dr. Lawrence Pazder collaborated together on a bestseller titled Michelle Remembers, which documented their unorthodox sessions in which Dr. Pazder used recovery-memory therapy to bring forth memories of Satanic ritual abuse. The wild story behind the book is detailed in Satan Wants You, the eye-opening documentary feature from Vancouver directors Steve J. Adams and Sean Horlor. Satan Wants You explores the story of our homegrown doctor and patient, the global moral panic they created and fed, and the ways in which their story is playing out once again. The film premiered to sold-out crowds at SXSW, and has its hometown premiere at the 2023 DOXA Documentary Film Festival. In this fascinating interview, Steve and Sean talk about Michelle, Dr. Pazder, the impact they had on the 1980s, and the disturbing similarities behind then and now.Episode Sponsors: Biz Books + The Drama Class
How, in the name of the Holy Virgin Mary, did Michelle Remembers—the book that started the Satanic Panic—come to be written? Who was Lawrence Pazder really? Did he encourage and exaggerate Michelle Smith's recovered memories of ritual abuse? Did Smith tell him what he wanted to hear? Or was it a little of both? Canadian filmmakers Sean Horlor and Steve Adams have a new documentary out called “Satan Wants You,” and it fills in a lot of the blanks in our prior “Swan Song Series” reporting with incredible archival footage and brave interviews from friends and family members. Today it opens at Toronto's Hot Docs Festival, which means the reviews embargo is lifted… and our review is: “Incredible work. Must see.” PS! Shibble nerds over Dungeons & Dragons as we discuss the franchise's most prosperous days: the Satanic Panic! But beware, as we are dissecting D&D through the lens of 80s mass hysteria we will also be talking about triggering topics such as child abuse, teenage suicide and crazed conservative right-wingers! Shibble breaks down the history of Satanic Panic through the stories which inspired books like Remembering Satan, The Dungeon Master and even Michelle Remembers, while I attempt to crap all over regressive hypnosis yet again, by tying the alien abduction craze back to satanic ritual abuse hysteria. Shibble also shakes his head in disappointment as I try to make the case that D&D truly is magic, and may be used for divination! Hey, maybe we trigger some conspiracy nuts along the way! =============== Huge THANK YOU!!! to Shibble from Uncle Monster's Spooky Time Fright Hour for purging all of his D&D and Satanic Panic obsessions upon us, allowing me to profit off his knowledge without doing a sliver of research myself!
Don't panic! Writer Aja Romano shares how they became interested in the history of the Satanic Panic in the US, how it ramped up in the 60s and 70s, the societal impact of horror films like The Exorcist, books like Satan Seller and Michelle Remembers, rising fear and trials that arose in the 80s, its impact on the LGBTQ community, and how these kinds of ideas persist today! The homestretch of our study of Michelle Remembers zeroes in on the literal symbols—and symbols gone literal—of the Satanic Panic. (This is episode 6 of the Swan Song Series.)Archetypes, gore, anxieties about sex and babies and filth: Lawrence Pazder mined it all, using modes of abstraction and dehumanization as old as religion itself to weave a story he claimed was all about Michelle—but was really an exercise of his own fetishes.Michelle Smith could have received proper care for her understandable stresses. She could have offered up her feelings and sensations and images from dreams for discussion and contemplation, and an actual therapist would have held that material safely for her to explore. But in Pazder, Smith found someone who wasn't interested in common human complexity. He was interested in cosmic warfare, and the role he could LARP within it.But Pazder was so blind to his craven narcissism that he couldn't help but tell on himself. In the final passage we analyze, Pazder records Smith demanding to end therapy. “If I could tear out my tongue,” she says, “I would never have to speak again.” But in the very next paragraph, the man who is forcing her to “remember” symbolically tears out her tongue, rejecting her plea to end the sessions, interpreting her demand as though it were coming from Satan himself. She imagines herself getting in a car and driving and driving, anywhere. Away from this psychiatrist who wanted to be an exorcist, away from his story, perhaps to find her own. In the second of three episodes on Michelle Remembers, we recap its Catholic contexts, and Lawrence Pazder's quest to transcend the limitations of psychiatry through mystical nightmares. We then explore the front matter: how Pazder introduces his project (and himself), and the ambivalent endorsement of Remi de Roo, Archbishop of Victoria. In Pazder's many clerical alliances, a crucial theme is established: the rapprochement between psychiatry and the priesthood, in which the former submits to the latter to restore the reality of the supernatural. We also look at the pre-emptively defensive intro penned by the publisher, Thomas B. Congdon Jr. He claimed to have verified the substance of the book through interviews, and thought that Pazder and Smith were very earnest and forthcoming people when he hosted them for editorial meetings. There's no Teal Swan without the Satanic Panic. And there's no Satanic Panic without the 1980 publication of Michelle Remembers, by Lawrence Pazder and Michelle Smith. In this first of three segments on this melted book, Matthew and Julian cover its historical, cultural, and mass media context. We start with a review of a 1985 20/20 episode called “The Devil Worshippers” for a taste of how mainstream outlets hosted cranks like Pazder, giving him a hall pass on evidence, and overlooking how his Catholic fetishes and paranoias played a huge role in the fictions he spun. The post Vatican 2 context is crucial, especially as we bear witness to the current political triumphs of Trad-Cath propaganda and politics in our post-Roe, QAnon -fried world. For help, we look to an excellent essay by social historian Bernard Doherty about the genre and elements of the Catholic Horror Film, which begins with Rosemary's Baby in 1968. This reactionary genre attempted to respond to modernizing—or postmodernizing, as Jordan Peterson might say—changes in Church doctrine. Bottom line? The Satanic Panic largely begins in and is sustained by Catholic-flavoured conspirituality anxiety about secularization, sex, babies, and abortion. CORRECTIONS: My dad informs me that I've made some Pope mistakes! Pius X was the last legitimate Pope according to the sedavacantists, and John XXIII, not Paul XXIII, opened the Vatican 2 proceedings. Thx dad. Thought to be one of the most haunted graveyards in BC, Ross Bay Cemetery has a colorful past and present and is no stranger to former and current residents showing up in all kinds of places. We also discuss the book "Michelle Remembers" as it was in the Ross Bay cemetery the satanic rituals supposedly took place and we look back at how much impact that book had on the religious world of the 1980s.
In this episode we dip back into our Dungeons and Dragons discussion and bring it to a conclusion but not before doubling down on the delusional deluge of disinformation. If you think the dishonest disreputable deriders of Dungeons and Dragons disgraced themselves in the last episode then dig in for a downpour of disturbed deceptive ding bats. We'll delve into the deranged world of Fundamentalist Christian comic book creator Jack Chick. The most published comic book author in the world, whom you've never heard of. A man into all kinds of conspiracy theories. He is most obsessed with the Catholic Church claiming they keep the name of every Protestant in the world on file with the intention of carrying out another inquisition one day. He also attacks the Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Muslims and of course it goes without saying, Freemasons. We'll return to Virginia, the spiritual home of Dungeons & Dragons hysteria and hear from Winston Mathews who sought the Republican nomination for attorney general in the state of Virginia. He proudly announced he was campaigning on just on 2 issues, maintaining the death penalty and abolishing Dungeons & Dragons, claiming it contained, ‘devil worship, Satanism and pornography.'We'll investigate the links between Capital Punishment and DnD you weren't even aware of. Like Oklahoma teenager Sean Sellers who shot a convenience store clerk, Robert Paul Bower then 6 months later shot dead his mother and stepfather, Vonda and Lee Bellofatto while they slept in their bed. Throughout the lengthy trial and appeals process Sellers had claimed to have been a practising Satanist and possessed by a demon. He claimed DnD manuals helped him convert others to Satanism. What Moral Panic would be complete without Geraldo Rivera and we'll look at his 2 part series for Entertainment Tonight in 1987. Pastor George Grant makes a return with co-author Peter Leithart expressing their deepest fears about imagination and their claims Jesus is a character in the game.Homophobic radio host and author Texe Marrs who believes the world is flat, Judaism and Catholicism are Satanism, the Clintons and Newt Gingrich are Marxists and Barbie Doll is Goddess of the Sun among many other things makes an appearance.Pastor Win Worley who claims the Star of David, Karate, tattoos and piercings are all occult spirits, paraphrases Exodus in his attack on the game. But it is alleged former Satanist Bill Schnoebelen who steals the show with his claims of being a vampire. And when I say vampire I mean an actual vampire. Fangs, unable to walk around in the daytime and drinking blood. He really claims this. He also claims he has had sex with a fallen angel! We discover the people most afraid of a Table Top Fantasy Role Play Game are the very people whose grip on reality is the weakest.DnD gets wrapped up in the Satanic Panic along with other pure fantasy like Michelle Remembers and The Satan Seller by an overly superstitious market, ready and waiting to be thrilled and terrified by tales of Demons and evil cabals. And this fear didn't all end in the 80s. In the 21st century the game has been targeted by a Spiritual Warfare Network Regional Coordinator, Diane Buker, televangelist Pat Robertson and author Gary North who predicted Y2K was going to destroy western civilization would like to see the U.S. become a Handmaid's Tale styled theocracy. And also wants offenses like blasphemy and homosexuality to be punishable by death. And when I say death, Gary advocates the method of execution be a good old public stoning.
Stephanie is kicking us off with the beginning of a multi-part series! And this first installment is laying the ground work for a big 2-part story. False Memory and Recovered Memory Therapy is where we start, then a book is release "Michelle Remembers", and we quickly begin the descent into moral panic. Or, as is more widely known, Satanic Panic. Tune in to hear how these points all connect, and keep listening each week as this story unravels. Sarah wraps up with the ghost (or poltergeist) tale of the Stratford Knockings. In 1850 Stratford Connecticut, a family was plagued for 7 months by an entity that liked to: knock on walls, scream, move things, levitate the children, and create dummies out of the families clothes that would appear when no one was around. And that's just the tip of the activity-iceburg!!
Brace yourself for this one. If you can't handle graphic depictions of sexual abuse directed in the most obscene and ridiculous ways towards breasts, this isn't gonna be one you're gonna enjoy. This story truly plays out like a horror film. Some type of Rob Zombie slasher flick. On acid. Robin Gecht is a man with a VERY specific sexual obsession. And that obsession, when he wasnt behind bars, combined with Satanic worship straight out of some 1980s Satanic Panic PSA, led Robin to embark on a spree of sexual violence and murder that left at least eighteen women dead. And helping him were Ed Spreitzer and brothers, Tommy and Andrew Kokoraleis. These four men, dubbed The Ripper Crew, had a murder van, a hidden Satanic chapel, and a lot of really dark desires they took out on a lot of unsuspecting women in and around Chicago in 1981 and 1982. The truth is stranger than fiction sometimes, and this is one of those times. Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: The Bad Magic Charity for June is The Rainbow Railroad. Michelle remembers where she was on September 11, 2001. As a flight attendant, Michelle has a unique take on the horrific events from that day. Michelle recounts flying over ground zero only days after the attack; how the area below was lit up like a baseball field with hundreds of workers laboring night and day to search for any survivors. Michelle's career trajectory was vastly altered because of September 11, 2001. She loved her work as a flight attendant, but it was unsustainable as that industry was crippled by the after effects. Take a few moments and listen as Michelle shares her story from September 11, 2001. We will never forget.
TRANSCRIPT HERE Welcome to hell. A family is falling the fuck apart, in the most distressing way. Toni Colette wishes she was back in Porpoise Spit at this point. We are of course, unpacking the traumatizing debut from Ari Aster, Hereditary (2018). We talk in depth about how Ari portrays grief, PTSD and family attachments, but also make it horror? As well as start to question his choices in how he portrays and utilises disability in his films. Is he exploitative? Do we love Ari or do we hate him? Can it be both? Hold onto your butts, because this ride is WILD. In part one of this insane two-part series, Hannah takes Katy back to the 1980's when fundamentalist Christianity revived a centuries-old bias and incited a panic around Satanic ritual abuse. Did you know that the devil only speaks in Dr. Suess-esque rhymes and in order to summon him you have to three-legged race with a child and then use said child as a compass? Hear about Michelle, and her extraordinary "memories" of hanging out in a Satanic cult, drawing crosses on people in blood, accidentally ruining a good orgasm, and shaking snakes at people, all while ruining perfectly good devil-summoning rituals. There was too much for just one episode, so make sure to listen next week for the thrilling conclusion to this modern moral panic!
