Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of True Detective, joins Tim and Troy Green for an unfiltered conversation about the pain that shaped his storytelling, the personal demons behind his writing, and the redemptive power of love, art, and fatherhood. From a turbulent childhood in Louisiana to working with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson on one of the most acclaimed series in TV history, Nic opens up about what drives his work, the philosophy behind his characters, and the life-altering events that changed his path.

Mēs Bondu no A līdz Z pabeidzām 18 mēnešos. Īpaši pēc Bonda filmas, es aizvien spēcīgāk izjūtu to, kas notiek pasaulē, to notikumu domino efektu. Kas to vērtē šobrīd, atrazdamies šeit, Latvijā? It kā cilvēki pēkšņi būtu pamodušies jaunā patiesībā, no kuras nav atpakaļceļa.  Ko saka tev zināmie filmu ļaudis? Kerijs Fukunaga: Lielākā daļa no viņiem vienkārši nespēj noticēt tam, kas notiek acu priekšā. Lielākoties tā ir tāda apstulbuma sajūta šāda absurda priekšā. Protams, daudzi sev jautā - ko es varu darīt lietas labā? Kā redzam, ielu protesti šeit nedarbojas. Ko darīt? Es nezinu. Man nav atbildes.

Escuchen, escuchen.

Grab your passport, bikini (and your SPF of course) because we are off to The White Lotus with the show's star, Michelle Monaghan!  I, like so many of you, have been obsessed with The White Lotus since season one and season three is not holding back on the drama is it?!? I am OBSESSED with the dysfunctional dynamic between Michelle's character Jaclyn and her two childhood friends Laurie (Carrie Coon) and Kate (Leslie Bibb). That is the girls trip I want to be on, even if it's just for a front row seat for the drama.  As the series continues Michelle joins us to talk about the juggle that comes from trying to be everything to everyone all at once - especially as a mother - the power of sisterhood, how female competition has changed in the entertainment industry and how good things come from a no! If you are struggling to build boundaries or want to reframe your relationship with rejection, that is a piece of advice you need to hear.  Michelle also reflects on her 25 year long career that's seen her star in Mission Impossible, True Detective and Family Plan and reveals a producer once told her she would never work again after she simply said no to doing some publicity she didn't feel comfortable doing. It's a story which reminds us all that using your voice and facing your fears always pays off and always improves your relationship with yourself, too!  If you love listening to Michelle as much as I did, please get in touch with me across socials @joshsmithhosts as I always love hearing from you and I'll see you next week for another episode of Reign. Nicole Ari Parker is stepping into the DC Universe. The actress, best known for her role in HBO's And Just Like That, has been cast in a recurring role in Lanterns, the upcoming HBO drama centered on the Green Lantern Corps. Parker will portray Bernadette, the mother of John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), one of the two central Green Lanterns in the series.HBO describes Bernadette as “formidable and tenacious,” a woman who has spent her life ensuring her family is not left behind. She is fiercely protective of her son, a trait that will likely shape John Stewart's journey in the show. The series follows John Stewart and Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler), two members of the Green Lantern Corps, an elite intergalactic force tasked with maintaining order across the cosmos. Their power stems from special rings that grant superhuman abilities, making them one of the most formidable forces in the DC Universe.Lanterns is significant for DC Studios as it marks the first live-action series developed under the leadership of co-chairmen and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The show received a straight-to-series order in June, securing an eight-episode season with True Detective: Night Country and Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy at the helm.In addition to Parker and the lead duo, the cast includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen, who will portray the iconic Green Lantern antagonist Sinestro. This isn't the first time Green Lanterns have appeared in live-action. Hal Jordan was famously played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 Green Lantern film, though that adaptation was widely criticized. Meanwhile, John Stewart has long been a fan-favorite in the comics and animated series but has yet to receive a proper live-action portrayal. His inclusion in Lanterns marks a significant moment, as Stewart was one of DC's first Black superheroes and a key figure in Green Lantern lore.DC's live-action universe is undergoing a major transition. Nathan Fillion has been cast as another Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, in Gunn's upcoming Superman film, slated for a July release. With Lanterns, HBO is set to bring a detective-style drama to the Green Lantern mythos, a tone Gunn previously described as inspired by True Detective. As of now, HBO has not announced an official release date for Lanterns. Meanwhile, Nicole Ari Parker will also return for Season 3 of And Just Like That, set to premiere later this year. What We Know About LanternsA New Era for Green Lantern

In Episode 457 of No Way, Jose!, host Jose Galison welcomes philosopher and cultural theorist Steven DeLay for a deep dive into the iconic first season of True Detective. Together, they unravel the layers of this gritty masterpiece, exploring its philosophical underpinnings, narrative brilliance, and haunting aesthetic. With DeLay's keen eye for how culture is engineered, the conversation takes a fresh approach, dissecting the show's portrayal of human nature, morality, and existential dread against the backdrop of a decaying American South. Fans of the series and newcomers alike will find plenty to chew on as Jose and Steven connect the dots between Rust Cohle's brooding nihilism and the broader forces shaping our world. But it doesn't stop at surface-level analysis. True to the No Way, Jose! spirit, Jose and Steven venture into the parapolitical shadows that echo through True Detective's eerie storyline. From conspiracies of power to the hidden hands steering society, they explore how the show's cultish mysteries and institutional corruption might reflect more than just fiction. With DeLay's philosophical rigor and Galison's knack for sniffing out the unseen, this episode offers a mind-bending blend of cultural critique and speculative intrigue. The most recent season of True Detective was the most divisive in the show's history. The first one was universally praised, while the second caught a lot of heat. For whatever reason, the third season flew under the radar. We talk about our opinions of season four and the news surrounding the show's future.Hammer Studios is an important part of horror history. It introduced aspects to vampire lore that is still seen today and its use of gothic sexuality and romance would inspire many filmmakers. They have been quiet for decades so the recent announcement has us both excited.David Cronenberg may not have invented body horror, but he is the same most associated with it. His early movies made with the help of the Canadian government are especially interesting. The DIY quality and balls to the wall attitude make them some of the most fun entries in his impressive catalogue. Still, it is fair to say that The Brood is not the best movie he has ever made. A disjointed affair that has trouble sticking the landing, the film is carried by some impressive performances. We may have been confused by what we saw, but did that prevent us from enjoying it?It seems like we have been working off of a list this year. We started with a vampire movie, moved on to alien invasions and have talked about a zombie apocalypse. So it only makes sense that we would review a haunted house flick. Especially one that has heavy religious themes. It is a shame that Inhabitants could not stick to a formula. The team behind it were more concerned with using a plot device they clearly had no knowledge about instead of actually writing a coherent film. The end result is a lead that seems aloof and unloving, a villain that seems justified in its actions, and a whole lot of nonsense. The front cover of The New York Daily News featured a photo of patrolman Ray Cusack, who rescued many children from a fire in Hempstead, New York. Dwight Eisenhower was still undecided on whether or not to seek a second term, while Democrat hopeful Adlai Stevenson claimed Ike's recent State of the Union Address was merely a veiled State on the Republican party. Meanwhile the families of both US diplomats and UN officials fled from the Jordanian sector of Jerusalem after violent anti-western riots broke out for the second day in a row. If you turned on your radio at 8:15PM eastern time, you'd have heard a Boston Symphony concert on NBC, and Metropolitan Opera auditions on ABC. WOR aired True Detective, but if you wanted the best in radio detective fiction you'd have turned on CBS, where Bob Bailey was starring in Jack Johnstone's production of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, written by E. Jack Neuman. The prison where Vance served time is Sing Sing, originally opening in Ossining, New York in 1825. Among the executions in their electric chair were Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, on June 19th, 1953, for Soviet espionage. A good mink coat cost about twenty-five-hundred dollars in 1956. Both Orin Vance and Don Freed were voiced by Lawrence Dobkin. By 1956 Dobkin was a radio legend with experience in both New York and Hollywood. The Westin Hotel Chain was launched in 1930 by Severt W. Thurston and Frank Dupar as Western Hotels. They were the first hotel chain to introduce credit cards in 1946. Today the chain, called Westin since 1981, is owned and operated by Mariott. There are Westin Hotels in both the Times Square and Grand Central area. In January of 1956, 57th street was home to various art exhibitions like Kay Sage's surrealist paintings at the Catherine Viviano gallery, a contemporary Greek Art exhibition at Sagittarius gallery, a European group show at the Matisse gallery, and art and artifacts of various Central African tribes at 57th and Lexington. The Sutton theater, also on 57th street, was showing The Night My Number Came Up starring Michael Redgrave and Sheila Sim. Gloria Tierney's fictional apartment at 1231 East 57th is an impossibility. The address would put it in the East River.

One year after the outgoing Biden administration struck a deal to bring him and four other Iranian Americans back home, Siamak Namazi, the longest held American in Iran, speaks with Christiane about his captivity in Iran's Evin prison, the torture he underwent and what it feels like to be free. Then, Christiane sits down with Hollywood legend Tom Hanks and his co-writer Christopher Riley to discuss their unique documentary "The Moonwalkers," capturing humanity's obsession with space travel. She also revisits an exclusive report from Ukraine, where she gained access to a medical evacuation train used by the Ukrainian army to transport wounded soldiers from near the frontlines to hospitals around the country. Afterwards, "True Detective" stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis speak with Christiane about the latest season of the hit series released to critical acclaim. Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep and former Afghan politicians, negotiator Fawzia Koofi and Dr. Habiba Sarabi, also join Christiane to talk about their new documentary called "The Sharp Edge of Peace," following the doomed efforts to negotiate with the Taliban. And finally, in a moving interview during celebrations marking 80 years since the D-Day landings in Normandy, 101 year old U.S. army veteran Jake Larson speaks with Christiane about the shared values he and his fellow servicemen fought for during World War II. This week, we explore the darkest layers of modern society -- which largely remain in the shadows -- deliberately obscuring the vision of the general public. Our undisclosed enemies, shrouded in darkness, intentionally unraveling the very moral fabric disrupting the international community at large. As we remain headstrong in the pursuit of truth, we stumble across the path of our common enemy possessed with the darkest ambitions unbeknownst to the vast majority, involving complicated coverups, sexual blackmail, childhood trauma, methods of mind-control, and even ritualized murder or blood sacrifice requiring the use of ancient runes by various groups who tend to believe in the magical elements of neopaganism. We must first understand the reconstructed ideology of our enemy if we are to defend against them. As we prioritize separate cases involving extraordinary overlap while sharing stark parallels with each other, we venture into the shadows, only to reemerge in the midst of a moral crisis. The quote long attributed to Italian poet and philosopher, Dante Alighieri, comes to mind: "The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis..." And so, our perilous journey through this inverted moral landscape begins...leaving us with a profound sense of righteous indignation.Support the show'Silence is Acquiescence'

Adventures of the Federated Tec, Season 2, Episode 10: Who Killed Bob Teal? In this exciting second-season finale, our hero gets an assignment that hits too close to home: Find the person who murdered another Federated operative, young Bob Teal. The Tec, along with San Francisco Police Detective George Dean, soon starts sniffing out the trail of the most obvious suspect...but our nameless protagonist eventually begins to wonder if maybe they're after the wrong guy.  Adapted by Pete Lutz from the story of the same name, originally published in the November, 1924 issue of True Detective magazine. Produced and directed by Pete Lutz. Mixing and mastering by 63audio, Corpus Christi, Texas. Our cast consisted of the following Narada Radio Company players: Darren Rockhold as THE ANNOUNCER Pete Lutz as THE TEC Joe Stofko as THE OLD MAN Frank Guglielmelli as OGBURN Ian Federgreen as BOB TEAL John Bell as DETECTIVE DEAN Rhiannon McAfee as MAE LANDIS Geri Elliff as THE LANDLADY  Jeff Moon as WHITACRE The theme, and some incidental music, were composed and performed by Dr. Ross Bernhardt.  FEDERATED TEC FANS! We're happy to report that a third season is in the works. Scripts have been written for 11 episodes so far, with a likely four more to go. Each season gets longer than the previous one, because Hammett's stories, for the most part, kept getting longer, better, and more detailed, as his writing skills improved. As a huge fan of Hammett for more than 40 years, I have no desire to condense these longer tales, preferring instead to split them, as you saw in S2, into multi-episode dramas -- S2 alone had three longer stories split into two-parters, for example. Well, S3 will have both two- and three-part story arcs, full of the Hammett hard-boiled style, full of intrigue, and full of the unusual characters he was famous for. You won't wanna miss it! Here's the line-up for Season Three -- and just for simplicity's sake, we'll be shortening our series title to The Federated Tec: 1. Mike, Alec, or Rufus? 2-3. The Whosis Kid 4-5. The Scorched Face 6-8. Corkscrew 9-11. The Daiwan of Chinatown (orig. title Dead Yellow Women) 12-14. The Gutting of Couffignal 15. The Creeping Siamese COMING SOON FROM 63AUDIO!

Episode 280 is a reading of "The Black Negligee Murder" By Frederic HolmesAdapted from True Detective, v.43 no.1Ad-Free Safe House EditionThere's a lot going on in this story. The seams show in the author's reporting as he occasionally allows glimpses into his process, but at the same time, he makes it seem like he's telling story from the point of view of the bad guy for most of the first two thirds of the narrative. The really cool nerdy part for me as a writer and a fan of pulp, is that you can hear the author's disdain and sympathy both for the character as well as his determination to be fair and to let the story unfold no matter how disagreeable he may find it. So this tells me that he might have had a frank, lengthy, detailed interview with Dahlbender, was maybe even charmed by him a little, just as Rose Whitmore was, but also repulsed by his plotting and despicable actions. Still, the author seems to get in Dahlbender's head and lets him have his say, but his self-pity doesn't make his actions any less reprehensible. I checked with some of the newspaper articles of the day, and this story seems to be sticking to the gist of what reporting I found. Dahlbender was quite contrite when he was caught and his confession seemingly heart-felt. True crime magazines have a terrible reputation for not being totally committed to the “true” in the interest of sensationalizing the stories. The do typically veer from newspaper journalism in a lot of ways, such as inventing dialogue and giving people intentions they can't possibly know, but I have found them to be relatively reliable, at least as reliable as daily newspaper reporting, as far as the general facts of the case go. Before I share a story from the old pulps, I always do at least a cursory check against newspaper reporting to make sure there really was such a case and that the basic facts are accurate if not the details. There's a big difference between a true story and a story based on a true story, and I try to lean toward the former in my curation. I've got some really well-told stories in my back pocket that I can't yet prove their veracity, mainly because they're about really old cases and I don't have access to the right archives to give adequate confirmation. At least not yet. I'll keep them in my pocket for now.I've known some guys who did this kind of magazine work, and they were always meticulous in their reporting and had an advantage of time that daily newspaper reporters don't have. This story was written three years after the trial and covers the case not only from the reporter's and the perpetrator's points of view, but the last third switches over to the police investigation, which is usually the sole perspective in most pulp stories. So I believe the author did his homework for us and presents us with an interesting, somewhat sympathetic portrait of a sleazy opportunist.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crime-historian--2909311/support.

Last show of the week and so we are going to making time for open lines on all topics, especially what is continuing to develop along the destructive path of Hurricane Helene. Outside of that, we'll thumb through some headlines, cover a police call in Toledo, Ohio, which reads like a scene from True Detective Season One; and then, if all goes well, Matt and I will read through the classically wild "Ghost Puncher" thread that I have been saving for the Month of October.
