We are BACK for our second Broad Daze episode and apparently we've got pussies on the brain… cats, people. CATS. In true double-bestie fashion we cover everything from cat parenting, cat fostering and cat birthing (yes really) to kitty litter hacks, pee anxiety, spirituality, identity shifts, Parts Work and the lingering shadows of religious conditioning. From cats to horses (the Year of the Horse to be exact), we unpack what's currently shifting for all of us; what's surfacing for Rachel, what Tez is moving through, what Sarah's leaning into and what “Part” is showing up as Olivia navigates her toughie era. We dive into the many versions of ourselves that exist within us and how those parts protect, rebel and evolve. Then things take a darker turn as we wade into the unsettling world of the Satanic Panic, including the disturbing story surrounding the West Memphis Three case at the height of moral hysteria in America. We also talk religious upbringings, indoctrination, residual fear, reconnecting with the divine feminine, ancestral wisdom and why understanding both the light and shadow sides of our lineage matters so deeply. The West Memphis Three case remains one of the most debated criminal cases in modern U.S. history, marked by conflicting interpretations of evidence, questions about investigative methods, and ongoing disagreement about guilt or innocence. While Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr. were convicted in 1994, years of scrutiny have raised concerns about the reliability of key evidence, including Misskelley's confession and disputed forensic findings. The emergence of alternative suspects and new DNA testing further complicated the case, leading to their release in 2011 through Alford pleas while maintaining their innocence. Ultimately, the case highlights broader issues within the justice system, including the risks of wrongful conviction, the influence of public perception, and the importance of thorough, unbiased investigations. As we conclude this case in its entirety, I want to remind you of the victims who don't get a second chance and still need justice: Stevie Branch, Michael Moore and Christopher Byers. "When we told prosecutors we were innocent, they put us in prison for life. Now when we plead guilty, they set us free."On 19 August 2011, three men - Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr. - were transported from their respective facilities to a courthouse in Jonesboro, Arkansas. They were there to plead guilty to a crime they had spent the better part of two decades denying. At the same time, they were asserting their innocence and obtaining their freedom in an unusual legal maneuver called an Alford plea. What led up to that decision was the culmination of years of painstaking progress. What had started back in 1996 as a single HBO documentary had become a movement by 2011 heralded by celebrity backers and advocates pushing new DNA evidence. Yet at the end of the day, three men regained their freedom at a cost while questions continue to linger about the deaths of three boys...Learn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meCheck out the podcast store at unresolved.dashery.comIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved-a-true-crime-mystery-podcast--3266604/support.

The West Memphis Three case centers on the brutal 1993 murders of three eight-year-old boys—Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers—in West Memphis, Arkansas. Police arrested three teenagers, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr., who became known as the West Memphis Three. In part 2 we'll go over Jesse and Damien's trials and how the prosecution argued the killings were part of a satanic ritual, a claim influenced by the era's “Satanic Panic.” Jesse did confess to the murders after a long interrogation, which became a key piece of evidence, though he later recanted the confession and it's been heavily debated over the years. In 1993, three eight-year old boys, Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Chris Byers, were murdered; their naked, mutilated bodies found shoved into the mud at the bottom of a ditch. The information developed by investigators pointed to three teenagers as the murderers. The three teens were convicted after two separate trials. One was sentenced to life imprisonment, one was sentenced to life plus forty years, and the third was sentenced to death. The convictions of the three teens became one of the most controversial cases in the State of Arkansas. During the early years of their incarceration, the growth of the Internet connected people all over the world through discussion forums and websites. As a result, the three teens, who became known as the “West Memphis Three,” developed a cult following that included the support of high-profile celebrities, including Johnny Depp, Peter Jackson, and Eddie Vedder and others, who all bought into the myth that the three convicted murderers were innocent.Today, the three convicted murderers are free. They appear to have given up their quest for judicial exoneration. Once they exhausted all other potential “guilty” parties, (some joined their camp and others were obviously not guilty), they focused their attention on Terry Hobbs, step-father of Stevie Branch, in an effort to divert attention from the evidence proving their guilt. Terry Hobbs was never a suspect in the murders and the facts of the case do not support his guilt. Undeterred, the convicted killers and their supporters continue to point fingers at Terry Hobbs. This is Terry Hobbs' story.https://amzn.to/4ui86q1Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

"When we saw Damien and Jason being chained up and taken off, it was just so emotional, because we felt the wrong guys were being carted off."In June of 1993, Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky were two young filmmakers coming off their acclaimed breakthrough and looking for a new opportunity. That's when an executive from HBO told them about a new story that had just taken place down in West Memphis, Arkansas, in which three teenagers were accused of killing three eight-year-olds. They assumed it would be a pretty straightforward story of youth violence. They spent their first few weeks with the victims' families and interviewed the prosecutors and police officials about the case. But then they met the defendants, everything changed for them. Over the next ten months, they were allowed unprecedented access to the courtroom, the families, the defendants, and the investigation...Learn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meCheck out the podcast store at unresolved.dashery.comIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved-a-true-crime-mystery-podcast--3266604/support.

In an offhand remark, he said that a local youth, Damien Echols, had "finally killed someone."The bodies hadn't been autopsied yet. No evidence had been processed and no interviews had been conducted. No suspects had been identified through any investigative means whatsoever. "As we face this shock... there's something that rises up and says it can't be, it shouldn't have happened."West Memphis, Arkansas was, in a lot of ways, the kind of American small town that people often romanticize. And like all romanticized places, it had its dark spots - such as poverty, underfunded social services, domestic troubles, and a police department under investigation by the Arkansas State Police for suspected mishandling of drug task force money. It was not a perfect place. But for the children who lived there, it was the only place. In the spring of 1993, three eight-year-old boys lived in that world. They rode their bikes through the neighborhood and explored the woods behind their houses. None other than Damien Echols, from the 1993 case colloquially known as the “West Memphis Three” case. So, could it be true? Am I simply picking on an innocent because he has a well-known name and I am troubled inside myself? Is there absolutely no other logical explanation for my actions? what exactly did I do? The West Memphis Three story is a nightmare of panic, pressure, and vanished evidence, where a confession mattered more than truth. In 1993, three eight-year-old boys vanished in West Memphis, Arkansas, then turned up murdered in Robin Hood Hills. As the Satanic Panic crept into the investigation, police chased a satanic ritual narrative and built a case around Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jesse Misskelley, fuelled by a false confession and courtroom “experts” who should never have been there. Years later, the hair evidence in a ligature knot and the Alford plea that freed them leave one brutal question hanging: if they walked out, who never got caught? Topics include Satanic Panic hysteria and a wrongful conviction built on fear Jesse Misskelley's false confession and the interrogation tactics behind it Paradise Lost and West of Memphis, and how the documentaries shifted the case The Alford plea, the hair evidence in the knot, and why the case stayed unresolved DNA testing and the long fight for full exoneration Resources and Further Reading West Memphis Three - Wikipedia The Satanic Panic - Wikipedia Paradise Lost (1996) - Documentry West of Memphis (2012) - Peter Jackson Devil's Knot - Mara Leveritt Host & Show InfoHosts: Kyle Risi & Adam CoxIntro Music: Alice in dark WonderlandCommunity & Calls to ActionReview & follow on: Spotify & Apple PodcastsInstagram: @theCompendiumPodcastWebsite: TheCompendiumPodcast.comSupport us: Sign up to PatreonCertified Freaks: Submit your job Descriptions Share this episode with a friend! On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder,  and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.”  David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David's claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.”  New episodes of Death and Deceit in Alliance will be available every Tuesday and Friday starting on December 2 wherever you get your podcasts. University of Michigan law professor David Moran never planned to spend his career freeing the wrongfully convicted. But after handling several appeal cases that exposed deep flaws in the system, he realized how widespread the problem really was. In 2009, he co-founded the Michigan Innocence Clinic, which has since helped free more than 45 people. Moran joins Lindsay to discuss how the West Memphis Three case reflects the patterns he's seen across wrongful convictions, why prosecutors sometimes pursue cases built on faulty evidence, and whether the justice system is finally learning from its mistakes.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! By the time he was sixteen, Jason Baldwin had already felt the sting of prejudice from his community in West Memphis, Arkansas. Kids at the trailer park where he lived had long been shunned by more well off residents of the town. Still, nothing could have prepared him for how vicious these prejudices would turn once the bodies of three eight year old boys were found murdered. Jason and two of his friends were convicted of the murder despite a complete lack of physical evidence. If not for the case coming to the attention of two documentary filmmakers, the West Memphis Three would likely still be in prison today.
