In this stunning true crime thriller of Facebook, catfishing, and jealousy, a double-murder begins with the click of a button. When Bill Payne and Billie Jean Hayworth began their romance, they unknowingly set in motion a diabolical plot that would end with them murdered in their own home, Hayworth holding their mercifully unharmed infant. Chris was a CIA agent who was concerned about Jenelle. Seeing the cyberbullying she had endured, and worried for her safety, Chris got in touch with Jenelle's protective parents, and her devoted boyfriend, warning them that Payne and Hayworth were a danger to Jenelle. He got especially close with Jenelle's mother, Barbara, who thought of Chris like a son, though she had never met him. Chris claimed that surveillance of Payne and Hayworth revealed that the two of them were planning on harming Jenelle, that it was imminent, and that something needed to be done immediately. Chris promised that he would have their back if they were to act to protect Jenelle. And so they did. Jenelle's father, Buddy, and her boyfriend, Jamie, broke into the home of Payne and Hayworth and murdered them in their own home. What the police investigation turned up, though, made this crime all the more terrifying. Jenelle had been Chris the entire time, catfishing her family and her boyfriend to act in vengeance on her behalf. Using forensic linguistics and diving through the brambles that Jenelle laid to cover her tracks, police were able to put together a chilling portrait of a sociopath, made all the more ruthless by the anonymity of her online life. Bizarre and unforgettable, Dennis Brooks examines the crime and trial from all angles, bringing his experhttps://amzn.to/3T371kBBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Welcome to Season 4 of Based in Fact: A True Crime Podcast. We're your hosts, Lisa O'Brien and Kyle Evans and this is Episode 1, State of Florida v. James Milton Dailey, Part 2. Guest co-host Rick Mullenax joins us to wrap up our look at the case against James Milton Dailey, who was convicted and sentenced to death for the May 5, 1985 murder of teenager Shelly Elizabeth Boggio. We'll pick up where we left off in Part 1 with a look at Dailey's renewed federal habeas efforts and four Motions to Vacate his conviction and sentence pursued in state court. Rick founded Burn After Reading, the YouTube channel that started with a deep dive into the West Memphis Three case and has expanded to shine a light on the shadier aspects of social media coverage of true crime, including the disappearance of Maura Murray and the murders of Libby German and Abby Williams by Richard Allen in Delphi, Indiana.

Lisa and Kyle are joined by guest co-host Rick Mullenax of Burn After Reading, the YouTube channel that started with a deep dive into the West Memphis Three case and expanded to shine a light on aspects of the shady social media coverage of true crime, including the disappearance of Maura Murray and the murders of Libby German and Abby Williams by Richard Allen in Delphi, Indiana. We talked about the case against James Milton Dailey, who was convicted and sentenced to death for the May 5, 1985 murder of teenager Shelly Elizabeth Boggio, including the case against Dailey, his trial, direct appeals and early state post-conviction efforts, up to the death warrant issued by Governor Ron DeSantis on September 25, 2019.On Friday, December 20, 2024, I learned that Robb Chadwick passed away. Robb was a retired journalist, writer and blogger. He was also a good friend of the show, who was always willing to sit in when we needed a guest co-host. I will miss his insight and his knowledge about many cases. Robb was a kind, calm Southern gentleman. He will be missed.
Send us a textBeaveman, Swan, and Nolan talk about the problems with the justice system. Citing the well-known story of the West Memphis Three, the Beaveman presents a very real fear in this country: going to prison for a crime you did not commit. Three young men spent 18 years of their lives in prison for a crime they clearly did not commit. Could this happen to you? Of course it could. The squad talks about the crimes that they would most likely commit that would end them up in federal prison if they were actually guilty. What is your incarceration plan? How do you dispose of a body? Theories? Let's also not forget, this is a comedy podcast. We begin the episode with praise for Nolan Johncock's set. Born in Little Rock, AR, Mike Poe's passion for filmmaking began at age 12 when his aunts gifted him a 35mm camera and enlarger. Mike earned a BA in Radio, TV, & Film from the University of Arkansas and has since worked on documentaries, short films, and hundreds of art events for film festivals across Arkansas. A few of his credits include: 45RPM (producer, music supervisor), Not Even God (producer), and West of Memphis (camera). Poe's most famous work is as director of Voices For Justice, a short documentary bringing attention to the wrongful convictions of The West Memphis Three in advance of their hearings with the Arkansas Supreme Court. Mike Poe's life took a sharp turn in 2014 when his best friend, TC Edwards, was murdered. The killer was never caught, and Mike has dedicated his years since to honoring the legendary rocker with a full-length documentary film, TC is Metal. Beyond his quest for justice and closure, Poe's goals involve creating and sharing Arkansas art with the world, and bringing in talent from around the globe to teach and inspire Arkansan artists.

In part one of this series we told you about Stevie, Michael, Chris and the murders that would forever change West Memphis Arkansas, and in part two we covered the satanic panic that led to the arrests of Jason, Damien, and Jessie. In part three of our West Memphis Murders series we focus on the time period after the arrests- June 1993 to jury selection for Jessie's trial in January of 1994.We hear from the Paradise Lost filmmakers, the families of the accused and include exercerpts from both Damien and Jason's books as well as clips from Paradise Lost and Devil's Knot as we gain a broader understanding of the work private investigators like Ron Lax and the public defenders appointed in the case did in preparation for trial. We end the episode with a conversation with Brooke's dad, The Honorable Judge Fisher and hear his perspective on Satanic Panic and this case.CW: child abuse, child death, self-harmSources:Jenkins, P (1992). Grab your death metal albums and don't talk to the cops without a lawyer because today we're gaining a broader understanding of the satanic panic of the 80s and 90s and how it greatly impacted the case of the West Memphis ThreeIn part one of this series we told you about Stevie, Michael, Chris and the murders that would forever change West Memphis Arkansas. We told you things the way that they seemed, now it's time to get into things the way that they actually were.In this episode we try and gain a broader understanding of the "Satanic Panic" and it's origins (from preschools to memoirs to rock music) while examining how this same search for satan narrowed the murder investigation by the West Memphis Police Department in 1993We learn about the way polygraphs were used in the investigation and why they held so much weight for the police and some of the people who may have gotten off without much questioning. We also include passages from Damien's book Life After Death and the book Jason Baldwin helped write with Mara Leverit, Devil's Knot. We end this episode with a confession from Jesse Misskelley and the arrests of Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin. There's so much to unpack in this episode and this case!Sources:Jenkins, P (1992). Grab your your old cassette tapes, and your deepest sense of injustice, because today we're getting a broader understanding of the 1993 West Memphis Murders and the three little boys who never made it home.On May 5th, 1993, three second graders- Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers left their homes in West Memphis, Arkansas for an ordinary bike ride. They were eight years old. They never came back. What happened that night would become one of the most infamous child murder cases in American history. In 1994, three teenagers- Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley would be convicted of those murders, in a trial driven by satanic panic, coerced confessions, and a complete collapse of justice. In 1996, HBO aired Paradise Lost and the world saw what had happened in that courtroom. Over the next twenty years, the West Memphis Three would fight for their freedom from behind bars. They'd get it eventually- kind of. But this case? It's not over. There's new evidence. There's new DNA. There's a chance to finally do what Arkansas never did: find out the truth. In part one of this series, we're not starting with suspects. We're starting with Stevie, Michael, and Chris-who they were, what they loved, and what was taken from them.Because before this became a media circus, before it became a cause, it was a tragedy.(originally released in May of 2023, full sources available in show notes)Sources:Jenkins, P (1992). This week on Revisited, Brian and Dani sit down to do what they do best — push each other, question everything, and dig into the case that still haunts anyone who's looked at it twice: the West Memphis Three.Three little boys murdered in 1993.Three teenagers convicted in a rush of fear, moral panic, and bad police work. But two decades later, those convictions unraveled — and now, the lines between guilt, innocence, and justice are blurrier than ever.Brian brings the cold facts. Dani brings the bigger picture.Together, they pull the case apart — from Jessie Misskelley's confession to the shaky forensics, to the politics behind the Alford plea that let the West Memphis Three walk free… without ever being declared innocent.Did the justice system fail — or did it do exactly what it was built to do? Is the case closed, or just abandoned? This isn't about who wore black or who listened to Metallica. It's about a town that needed someone to blame — and a truth that may still be buried in those Arkansas woods. No clean answers. Just two voices, one brutal case, and a whole lot of questions.
You know the story.Or at least, you think you do. The brutal murders of three young boys in West Memphis. The rushed arrest of three teenagers labeled monsters. The media circus. The outrage. The so-called justice. But what if the truth was never as clear as it seemed? In this episode of The Guilty Files: True Crime ReWired, I'm not just retelling the facts you heard in Uncovered — I'm breaking them apart. We'll walk through hidden confessions, lost evidence, compromised juries, and the quiet institutional failures that still echo today. We'll explore the dark psychology of fear, conformity, and survival... and the societal forces that make it all too easy to get it catastrophically wrong. This is the case through a different lens —A cracked lens.A darker glass. Along the way, you'll hear:What might have happened in that Bojangles bathroom... and why no one wanted to see it.How the "weird kid" became a town's scapegoat — and a symbol of systemic failure. What real evil might look like hiding behind polite smiles and Sunday best. How citizen obsession can both ignite justice... and destroy it.And most importantly —You'll see how easily any of us could be swept into the same tides of fear, silence, and denial that defined West Memphis in 1993. I'm Dani — former cop, trained sociologist and psychologist — and today, I'm asking you to do more than listen. I'm asking you to question. Because sometimes, the real crime isn't just what happened. It's what we refused to see.
In this episode of The Guilty Files Uncovered, Brian steps into dangerous territory — the West Memphis Three. But this isn't your typical Uncovered case. Here, the facts tell one story, but the deeper truth refuses to stay quiet. In 1993, three young boys — Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers — were found brutally murdered in a muddy ditch in West Memphis, Arkansas. It was a crime that stunned the town and shocked the nation. Within weeks, three teenagers — Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley — were arrested. They were different. They listened to heavy metal. They wore black. In the eyes of a panicked public, they fit the picture of evil. But what happens when fear outweighs evidence? When a confession is pulled from a vulnerable kid under hours of pressure? When juries are fed stories of Satanism instead of proof?Brian usually sticks to the cold, hard facts. But the West Memphis Three isn't just about facts — it's about the cracks in the system, the human cost of rushed judgment, and the haunting possibility that the real perpetrator, or perpetrators, are still out there. The three young men were eventually freed after spending nearly two decades behind bars — not exonerated by a clear confession or DNA match, but released through a complicated legal deal that left as many questions as answers. This case doesn't offer the neat closure we're used to. It challenges us to look past what we think we know and ask harder questions: Who failed? Who lied? And who's still getting away with it?Brian pulls back the curtain — no spin, no sugarcoating — to show how sometimes, getting to the truth means admitting how little we really know. The West Memphis Three. One of America's most haunting miscarriages of justice. Only on The Guilty Files.

Welcome to Season One of Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, where we explore the strange and troubling era of the 1980s and '90s when America—especially the evangelical church—became convinced that satanic ritual abuse and occult activity hid around every corner. From local news reports warning of dark rituals to churches hosting “record burnings” to purge secular music, fear of a hidden, demonic conspiracy dominated the cultural landscape. Terry Hobbs and Vicky Edwards - Box Full of NightmaresIn 1993, three eight-year old boys, Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Chris Byers, were murdered; their naked, mutilated bodies found shoved into the mud at the bottom of a ditch. The information developed by investigators pointed to three teenagers as the murderers. The three teens were convicted after two separate trials. One was sentenced to life imprisonment, one was sentenced to life plus forty years, and the third was sentenced to death. The convictions of the three teens became one of the most controversial cases in the State of Arkansas. During the early years of their incarceration, the growth of the Internet connected people all over the world through discussion forums and websites. As a result, the three teens, who became known as the “West Memphis Three,” developed a cult following that included the support of high-profile celebrities, including Johnny Depp, Peter Jackson, and Eddie Vedder and others, who all bought into the myth that the three convicted murderers were innocent.Today, the three convicted murderers are free. They appear to have given up their quest for judicial exoneration. Once they exhausted all other potential “guilty” parties, (some joined their camp and others were obviously not guilty), they focused their attention on Terry Hobbs, step-father of Stevie Branch, in an effort to divert attention from the evidence proving their guilt. Terry Hobbs was never a suspect in the murders and the facts of the case do not support his guilt. Undeterred, the convicted killers and their supporters continue to point fingers at Terry Hobbs.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
Is anybody really safe? You see the storyline in every form of entertainment, "Arrested for a crime they didn't commit", but what if it wasn't just a storyline? For Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley it's the story of their lives. The West Memphis Three, as they have come to be known, were convicted of the murders of three 8-year-old boys who were killed on May 5th, 1993. Christopher Byers, Michael Moore, and Stevie Branch were found in a creek the next day, and one thing was on everyone's minds. Satanic Panic. Beliefs of the boys being sacrificed to Satan led investigators to accused Satanist, Damien Echols. The only problem was Damien wasn't a Satanist. That didn't stop the Arkansas justice system from sentencing him to death, Jason to Life imprisonment, and Jessie to Life+ for a crime they didn't commit. In 1993, three innocent 8 year old boys were brutally murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas. The conservative bible belt nature of the area, and the spotlight of the nation looking at the crime quickly caused the police to cast their glance at 3 teenage misfits. They wore dark clothing. They liked heavy metal music. And they assuredly didn't fit in. Were they simply misunderstood outcasts ? Or were they the child killing satanists the prosecution wants you to believe? Let's take a look......Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/beyond-the-shadows--6218555/support.
Tragically, In 1993, three children were murdered in the town of West Memphis, Arkansas. Understandably, the people of the town felt that something terrible and sinister was going on. Was it possible that a satanic cult was responsible? What happened next was, and this should not come as any surprise at this point, unfortunate...
This week the boys have the honor of sitting down with Damien Echols and his wife Lorri Davis to discuss Damien's time behind bars as one of "The West Memphis Three", how life has changed since his 2011 release, and how finding Magic helped him survive and move past 18 years on death row. Episode 105 “Exonerate the West Memphis 3” - An Interview with Dan Stidham, Defense Attorney and co-author of A Harvest of Innocence: The True Story of the West Memphis Murder Case Part 4: In a heartfelt interview, author Dan Stidham and Jill discuss the inside story of defending the West Memphis Three's Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin as a young, inexperienced attorney, caught up in mass hysteria. The malignant prosecution that conspired with a biased judge to convict three innocent teenagers for the 3 horrendous murders of 8-year-old boys, left a killer loose in Arkansas. Threatened, attacked, treated as a pariah, Dan suffers from PTSD, even as he receives new tips and information to this day. With Misskelley and Baldwin out of prison (along with Echols), today Dan pursues the exoneration of the West Memphis Three, and—long overdue justice for the victims, Stevie Branch, Michael Moore and Christopher Byers, who's killer has never been identified-- but Dan and Jill both have theories on WHO committed these gruesome murders!. Part 2: Preparing for trial, against all odds, defense attorney Dan Stidham gathers world-class experts from a variety of fields, ready to prove his client, Jessie Misskelley, did not kill the 3 boys of West Memphis, wasn't at the crime scene, and his confession should be inadmissible according to the law. But judicial hijinks derail the Defense's plans as the State repeatedly violates Jessie's rights. Convicted, a bewildered teenage, Jessie tries to adjust to prison, as Dan vows to never quit until Jessie is out of prison. Filing appeal after appeal, the court stacks the deck against the defense. Adapting to his new pariah status, Dan sees the tide begin to change when the film, Paradise Lost is released, exposing judicial malfeasance and a case that rests on sketchy evidence & flawed eyewitness testimony. Meanwhile, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin remain in prison, with Damien Echols on -death row-. Ep 104 'Paradise Imperfect" on A Harvest of Innocence, will drop in two weeks! On the evening of May 5, 1993, three eight-year-old boys—Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers—went missing in West Memphis, Arkansas. The next day, in a nearby wooded area, the boys were found brutally murdered, bound, and submerged in a drainage ditch. The horrific nature of the crime shocked the community, and police quickly arrested three local teenagers—Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley—based on a coerced false confession, no solid evidence, and Satanic panic. This is the story of three innocent children whose lives were stolen in an unspeakable act of violence. It's also the story of three wrongfully convicted teenagers who spent 18 years in prison, one of them on death row, for a crime they didn't commit—the victims of a flawed justice system and a community in the grip of fear.In today's episode, I'm honored to discuss a case that has gripped me for many years with the one man who has been involved since the beginning: Jessie Misskelley's original defense attorney, case advocate, and author of the recent book, A Harvest of Innocence: Judge Dan Stidham. This is our discussion about his book and the tragic case of the West Memphis Three.A Harvest of Innocence by Dan Stidham on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Harvest-Innocence-Untold-Memphis-Murder/dp/B0CMYZ2BT7 Judge Stidham's website: https://www.danstidham.com Email Judge Stidham with information about the case: harvestofinnocence@outlook.comTruth & Justice with Bob Ruff podcast: https://www.truthandjusticepod.com Paradise Lost documentary series: https://www.max.com/shows/paradise-lost/d509d74f-3c01-4367-9a42-a3aece5de4c9 The Forgotten West Memphis Three docuseries: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12092348/ West of Memphis documentary: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2130321/ Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. West Memphis 3 /// Discussion Part 2 of 2 www.TrueCrimeGarage.comJoin Nic & The Captain in the Garage for a riveting and energy filled discussion about the West Memphis 3 case. This case and True Crime story continues to be one of the more debated cases of the 20th century, even after more than 30 years has passed. Why can't we as a collective community move on from this case? Is it because the case manages to creep its way back into the headlines, over and over again? Or, is it because at the end of the day we are all afraid that we may never know the truth about what happened in Robin Hood Hills, on May 5th, 1993? We are still seeking justice for Steve Branch, Michael Moore, Christopher Byers, and their families. West Memphis 3 /// A Harvest of Innocence Part 1 of 2 www.TrueCrimeGarage.comAfter taking a listen once again to our West Memphis 3 case coverage from 2016 we have decided to revisit the case and get some additional thoughts from a perspective not yet heard on TCG. Today we welcomed in Dan Stidham, the Defense Attorney for Jesse Misskelley Jr. Mr. Stidham represented Jesse for many years and at some points was assisting Jason Baldwin as well. He has since gone on to become a highly respected Judge in Arkansas. While he is not a fan of the Alford plea, he remains one of the key figures in this case that helped the West Memphis 3 to finally get released from prison after serving 18 years.
