When you think about your health, what is it that you picture? When you push yourself to workout, what do you say to yourself? Do you exercise because you hate your body and want to change it? Do you think about how you look or how many pounds you want to lose? If you find yourself focusing on fitness because it's supposed to change your body composition, you may be missing the bigger picture of what health means. This week Jenn is talking about untying the knot of fitness and body composition. Many times, we can get stuck in a cycle of obsessing over what we look like in the mirror, and the results will determine whether we are “healthy” or not. But what if we looked at all the other factors that go into health? During this episode, Jenn discusses how psychology plays into our feelings around our fitness regime, the hierarchy of movement, and what the other parts of health include. She describes how she utilizes tracking with her clients so they can see what their habits are when they are feeling their best. Tune in to learn how to reframe your thoughts around exercise and appreciate the miracle of the body you have. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [7:28] Why is there confusion with fitness and body composition? [12:00] How does psychology play into our feelings around our fitness routines? [20:18] How can you determine what your desired outcome actually is? [25:29] What's the first step to reframing our feelings around fitness and health? [28:35] What is the hierarchy of movement? [30:15] What are the other factors of health? [34:19] How does Jenn utilize tracking with her clients? [37:58] How can you separate movement from the way your body looks? [42:27] Jenn shares her thoughts around BMI and motivation. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Health isn't just fitness and nutrition. Expand your definition of what it means to live a healthy life to include your mental health, happiness, energy, and sleep quality. To determine what habits set you up for success, track your stress level, mood, sleep, energy, confidence and then look to see on which days you felt the best, what habits you were doing.Your body is an absolute miracle. Creating awareness and reframing your thoughts around your body and appreciating all the things it does for you, allows you to look at a new narrative. QUOTES: [27:04] “When I first start working with a client, we don't talk about the movement component in depth for about a month and it's on their radar anyway. It's almost like by not hyper focusing on it, and giving them other tools and things that we're building on each week, it inherently starts to diminish some of that importance on that activity or the intensity of that activity.” - Jenn Trepeck [28:01] “Just as we know it's not human to be sitting all day, it's also not human to sit all day and go berserk for an hour.” - Jenn Trepeck[30:04] “There isn't one thing we're going to do for our health that is going to trump or outshine or outdo the other pieces of health.” - Jenn Trepeck[40:11] “What if during our movement, we could just sort of have a moment of wonder at how amazing this human body is, and thank goodness we don't have to think about which muscles move to make a movement happen and to breathe and to make sure the heart beats, and all of these things, like the body is an absolute miracle.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:LAST CHANCE: Tickets to Salad with a Side of Fries LIVE in NYC on July 25, 2024The Ultimate BioHack EpisodeLongevity Equation EpisodeBlue Zones EpisodeBiostack over Biohack EpisodeJenn Trepeck's Episode on Weight Loss and Wellness For RealBecome A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries Instagram

On this episode of How to Split a Toaster, hosts Seth Nelson and Pete Wright speak with licensed marriage and family therapist Linda Hershman. They discuss the rising trend of "gray divorce" among older couples, the practice of discernment counseling, and how divorce later in life impacts adult children.Key Takeaways on Gray DivorceGray divorce rates have risen dramatically, from 10% of couples over 50 getting divorced in 1990 to 25% in 2020. The rate increases for second and third marriages.Four cultural changes are contributing to the rise in gray divorce: women gaining more financial power and independence, increased life expectancy, no-fault divorce laws, and evolving cultural norms about marriage.Unique concerns in gray divorce include caregiving as you age, less time to rebuild assets, and women worrying whether they'll find new partners.Discernment CounselingDiscernment counseling helps mixed agenda couples (one leaning in, one leaning out) decide whether to stay married or divorce. There are 3 paths offered in discernment counseling: stay the course and do nothing for now, move towards separation and divorce, or enter intensive marriage counseling where divorce is off the table. Discernment counseling is not regular marriage counseling - the goal is not to improve the marriage but rather to help the couple decide what to do next. It aims to create momentum to save the marriage for those who are unsure if they want to stay married.Listener Question on Custody and Visitation RestrictionsJudges can and do restrict custody and visitation if there are demonstrated safety concerns and evidence the children are being negatively impacted, like DUIs with a child in the car. However, schedule disruptions or complications alone don't usually qualify as emergencies warranting restrictions in the eyes of the court. The bar is high for judicial intervention limiting parental rights. The advice is to check your local laws and not assume your situation will automatically be seen as an emergency. Present concrete evidence of danger or harm if you want the court to intervene with custody and visitation restrictions.Linda Hershman's BookLinda Hershman is the author of Gray Divorce: Everything You Need to Know About Later Life Breakups. Her book covers various topics related to gray divorce, including the trends, impacts on adult children, LGBT and mixed orientation divorce, and more.Links & NotesLinda's website, on Instagram, and on LinkedInGray Divorce on Twitter and on FacebookGray Divorce: Everything You Need to Know About Later-Life Breakups by Linda HershmanSchedule a consult with SethGot a question you want to ask on the show? [13:30] Rhonda gives us an example of how she gained experience in an unknown area. [18:32] What is Rhonda's signature process for helping women financially through a divorce? Key Takeaways:  The first step before even looking at the budget is working through the fear and the things holding you back. With the right team in place, the finances can be manageable, but believing in yourself and finding your courage are the first steps to making the divorce experience smoother. The budget previews the current and future but also helps with negotiations. Pretty much any question that is asked pretty much goes back to the budget. Knowledge + Experience = Confidence. If we know without experience, it's just theory. If we have just experience but not knowledge, it's just trial and error, but those two things working together are really powerful.  Quote:  “Look at all the things you've done to get to this point. You are capable; you're smart; you're able to make big, great decisions. Not saying we don't need input, but we have to limit the amount of noise that we have in our mind and start reacquainting ourselves with our own brilliance and ability to make decisions” - Rhonda Noordyk   Guest Bio:  Rhonda Noordyk, CDFA® | CDS 5  Unspoken Truths about Money & Divorce7 Secrets to Winning Divorce Negotiations3 Key Chess Strategies that Apply to Divorce What is THE question you often get? No one gets married thinking that they'll get divorced one day. Unfortunately, not all marriages last and if you find yourself in this position, who do you turn to when it comes to getting help with your finances? This week on the podcast, I have CPA and author of Untying the Knot Kelly LaVallie who joins me to discuss how to navigate the complexities of untying your finances from your ex and how to start again on a good financial foot. Kelly LaVallie is the President of LaVallie & Associates Advisory Services Ltd. with over 25 years of experience in the accounting world. I am so happy to introduce you to Mark Tanaka, a teacher, and coach that specializes in helping people with nervous system regulation, somatic attachment/developmental trauma repair, and inner child work. Mark is a beloved friend and colleague whom I met during a 2-year shamanic energy bodywork training. He has a background in teaching Qi Gong and Yoga, which he applies to his somatic attachment and development trauma repair practices. Through his process of helping people unwind the physical body, he discovered that relationship trauma patterns left an imprint. This made him dive deeper into techniques that can help create more security and safety in relationships of all kinds.  In this episode, Mark guides a beautiful exercise on how to return to and regulate yourself when confronted with a hard conversation. I highly recommend you try it out.

Commissioner Kadie Ward joins me for the third installment of Level The Paying Field. Today we jump into the gender wage gap and how to close it for good. As usual, Kadie comes to the conversation armed with information you need to know so you can advocate for yourself. Ageism is something we're not talking about enough, especially when it comes to women in the workforce. Incredibly, in all of the discussions, webinars, research, white papers, and thought pieces that have been written about a ‘she-covery' from the devastating impacts of COVID, not one piece, not one call to action, has identified the difficulties that women in this age group experience or will face. Karen Schulman Dupuis is a shift disturber on a mission to make this “invisible” group of women, highly visible to policy makers and joins me to today to discuss. Anne Brodie has new entertainment with the disturbing Alice starring Keke Palmer, the absolutely bizarre life imitating art imitating life movie about the Tiger King and Carole Baskins on Showcase, We Crashed on Apple TV starring Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway, and the amazing Ava Duvernay's now movie DMZ with Rosario Dawson on Crave. Dr. Prachi Srivastava is back to continue our discussion on the education system. This week we take a closer look at financing education and what it will take to get kids back on track. Incredibly, Prachi shares that the government is underspending even when the dollars are there for them to disburse, plus she shares what the government needs to do to get kids caught up. Jenelle Simpson, a senior law clerk, paralegal, motivational speaker, and life coach in Toronto joins me to share details on her first book, Commitment to a Deceitful Liar that offers a peek into her life, from being raised in a West Indian home with all its beliefs and myths to unlearning instilled toxic generational cycles and relearning how to move to new levels Finally, Kelly Lavallie wants to save you money in your divorce. Her new book Untying the Knot, offers up handy strategies and preparatory tips for making sure each person gets the best settlement possible. She joins me to share a little bit of what people can expect in terms of costs if they are heading to divorce. It was a wake-up call, and it was also an invitation to look at her story and find out the real reason for her afflictions. She was abandoned at age 3, and her life wouldn't get any better in the forthcoming years. She experienced all kinds of abuse, from physical to sexual, mental, and even spiritual. It seemed that every person in her life was there to abuse her; friends, lovers, husbands, bosses, and above them all, herself. She began a personal recovery journey, fighting against several addictions, and most importantly, she needed to stop blaming everyone but her for her suffering. Brenda Reiss is a Forgiveness Coach and CEO of Brenda Reiss Coaching. Brenda is the author of two books and the host of the upcoming podcast, Liberate Your Heart. She helps others to be masters of their own lives and move beyond their scars and challenges, no matter how tough they are. In this episode, we had a heart-touching conversation about Brenda's journey, her healing process, and her leap of fate towards entrepreneurship. Brenda demystified forgiveness and put some clarity on why most people are reluctant to forgive. "On May 5, 1993, second-graders Christopher Byers, Stevie Branch, and Michael Moore disappeared from their West Memphis, Arkansas, homes. The following afternoon, their nude, beaten, and bound bodies were discovered in a drainage ditch less than a mile away. After a troublesome confession, three local teenagers, later dubbed the “West Memphis Three,” were arrested, tried, and convicted in early 1994. Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley received life sentences, while ringleader Damien Echols went to death row. Three years later, the documentary film “Paradise Lost” premiered on HBO, and the effect on viewers was dramatic. Many became skeptical of the verdicts and also felt one of the fathers of the victims was a better suspect—John Mark Byers. In Untying the Knot, author Greg Day tells the true story of John Mark Byers and the about-face he made to free the men convicted of the crime. Day exposes the propaganda campaign used to convince a gullible public that Byers was complicit in the deaths of his wife and son. Based on court transcripts and hours of personal interviews, Untying the Knot explores all the case evidence while interweaving dialogues and statements. It traces the life of Byers from his roots in rural Arkansas, to his son’s murder and the death of his wife, to his ultimate imprisonment in 1999. It reveals a man redeemed by prison and whose change of heart changed his life.  UNTYING THE KNOT: John Mark Byers and the West Memphis Three-Greg Day

Marriage is at the center of some of our fiercest political debates. Here are some recent developments regarding marriage in the United States. Earlier this year, the Justice Department announced that it would no longer defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). A few weeks ago, New York became the largest state to allow same-sex marriage, joining five other states, the District of Columbia, and the Coquille and Suquamish Indian tribes in Oregon. The Senate Judiciary Committee has recently started to consider a bill that would grant federal benefits to same-sex married couples. But to what extent should the state be involved at all in regulating or recognizing marriage? In her recent book, Untying the Knot: Marriage, the State, and the Case for Their Divorce (Princeton University Press, 2010), Tamara Metz argues for the “disestablishment” of marriage. Marriage, Metz argues, like religion, should be separated from the state. She further claims that the liberal state should only be in the business of legally recognizing a wide variety of intimate caregiving unions among consenting, able-minded, able-bodied, adult intimates. In this interview, she clarifies her position further. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
