Aznar pudo gobernar por primera vez gracias a los apoyos de CiU, PNV y Coalición Canaria. Junto a los testimonios de Iñaki Anasagasti (PNV) e Ignasi Guardans (CiU), o el de Alejo Vidal Quadras (PP Cataluña) -quien 'pagó' los platos rotos de ese acuerdo-, hemos recorrido los relatos del Aznar más pronacionalista, y de cómo viró su discurso cuando obtuvo mayoría absoluta. Cuando el expresidente ya no necesitaba echar mano de esos pactos para gobernar, desplegó su repertorio más vehemente contra los que, tan solo unos meses antes, habían sido sus socios en el Ejecutivo.

¿Te has preguntado alguna vez cómo surgió el servicio militar obligatorio en España y cuándo se abolió? En este podcast te contamos la historia de la mili, como se le conocía coloquialmente, desde sus orígenes hasta su finalización. El servicio militar obligatorio fue una forma de reclutamiento de soldados que se inició entre finales del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX y que consistía en que todos los hombres al cumplir los 18 años debían prestar servicio en el ejército durante un periodo de tiempo determinado. El nombre de quintos viene de que se elegía a un soldado por cada cinco hombres mediante un sorteo. Durante el siglo XIX, el servicio militar obligatorio se consolidó como una contribución a la que quedaba sometida la población masculina, aunque existían muchas exenciones y privilegios que permitían evitarlo mediante el pago de una cantidad de dinero o la sustitución por otra persona. Estas prácticas generaron mucha desigualdad y conflictividad social, especialmente entre las clases populares que no podían costearse la redención o la sustitución. En el siglo XX, el servicio militar obligatorio sufrió varias reformas y cambios según los diferentes regímenes políticos que se sucedieron en España. Durante el franquismo, la mili se alargó hasta los dos años y se endurecieron las condiciones de vida y disciplina de los reclutas. Además, muchos jóvenes fueron enviados a combatir en las guerras coloniales de Marruecos y el Sahara. Con la llegada de la democracia, el servicio militar obligatorio empezó a cuestionarse y a perder apoyo social. Muchos jóvenes se declararon objetores de conciencia y rehusaron cumplir con la mili por motivos éticos, religiosos o políticos. El Estado reconoció este derecho en 1984 y estableció una prestación social sustitutoria para los objetores. La finalización del servicio militar obligatorio fue uno de los puntos incluidos en el Pacto del Majestic de 1996 entre José María Aznar y el presidente de la Generalidad Jordi Pujol, a cambio del apoyo de CiU en la investidura del líder del Partido Popular tras las elecciones de ese año. Así, en 1996 se aprobó una ley que establecía la profesionalización progresiva del ejército y la supresión gradual de la mili hasta su desaparición definitiva en diciembre de 2001. Con el fin del servicio militar obligatorio se cerró una etapa histórica en España que había marcado la vida de millones de hombres durante más de dos siglos. La mili dejó de ser una obligación para convertirse en una opción voluntaria para quienes quisieran formar parte del ejército profesional.
