In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Justin Simoni aka the Long Ranger. In addition to established routes like the Tour Divide and Nolan's 14, Justin also creates his own - he's traversed the Sangre de Cristo Range, Mosquito and Tenmile Ranges, and from Milner to Berthoud Pass along the divide. And while summiting all of Colorado's 14,000 ft peaks is an effort in itself, Justin summited the top 100 highest mountains in the state after biking to them from his home in Boulder. We talk about all of the nitty gritty details of taking on these ridgeline routes, why he lives car-free, a detailed measurement of how much weight and water he lost over the course of a grueling day hike, some of his current favorite gear, and more. We wrap the show with an overview of some of the best loop hikes in the United States, what we would telepathically say to all 8 billion people on earth, and the triple crown of things on our bedside table. Zach and Eric interview the Long Ranger, Justin Simoni. Justin shares the highlights of some of his biggest expeditions, the origin of his trail name, as well as where he gets his drive from, (hint, it's not a car!).
"Justin Simoni is an adventurer, athlete, and writer based in Boulder, Colorado. Known for establishing difficult lines in the mountains by bike and by foot, Simoni carefully balances the line between fortitude and foolishness in his ultra-endurance mountain missions. His first mountain bike race ever was the Tour Divide: a 2,700-mile self-supported race from Canada to Mexico through the Rocky Mountains, which he has now toed the line for twice. Being intrigued to not just ride around mountains but summit the peaks themselves, in 2014 Simoni went about creating his own bikepacking/mountain running challenge of summiting the 58 Colorado 14,000'+ peaks. In 2017, he repeated the feat, but this time doing the highest 105 peaks in the State of Colorado, taking two months to complete it. Simoni also enjoys long and lofty ridge traverses solely by foot, having traversed unsupported and alone the Mosquito/Tenmile Range, and the Sangre de Cristo Range. When not finding the absolute limit to his own personal endurance, Justin enjoys teaching, guiding, drinking good coffee, and petting every dog on the trail."
The Long Ranger, Justin Simoni, is as much about the journey as the destination. Presented by Justin Simoni’s driveway is one of the loneliest places on Earth. After all, it’s been mostly empty for the last 6 years. See, the “Long Ranger” — Simoni’s nickname — has been car-free for the better part of a decade. And the only real use it sees is for the measly pair of tires that roll away in the wee pre-dawn hours when he rides his bike to his latest objective. See, Simoni views the entirety of an adventure as integral to the endpoint. So getting to the trailhead is as much a part of the fun as ascending it. The Long Ranger sits down to discuss his epic achievements, including the Tour 14er Duathlon (ascending the highest 58 peaks in Colorado, ridden to by bike, summited on foot, and completely self-powered and self-supported), the Longs Peak Project (summiting Longs Peak every month of the year in succession by a different route), and more. But, as we learn, Simoni’s accomplishments are only half the story. It’s his mindset and approach to both life and his endeavors that really set the Long Ranger apart!
Trained artist and self-propelled athlete, Justin Simoni speaks with host Lexi Miller about what it takes to go on his big mountain adventures, such as bike-backing to, and completing, all of the Colorado 14ers in a record setting time. Justin discusses the creativity needed to find adventure and how his background as an artist inspires him to push himself Justin Simoni is a 40 year old bikepacker, mountain runner, and fastpacker living in Boulder, CO. Simoni's favorite adventures include the Tour 14er: a month+ long self-supported bikepacking adventure riding to all the trailheads of the 58 Colorado 14ers, then summiting them by foot, as well as the Tour of the Highest Hundred: a similar trip, but summiting the highest 105 summits of Colorado in two months. Simoni has also completed long-distance unsupported fastback ridge traverses, including the entire Mosquito/Tenmile range, the Sangre de Cristo Range, as well as the very ridge of the Continental Divide outside of Boulder, between Milner Pass and Berthoud Pass. Every once in a while, Simoni dips his toes back into gravel bike and trail running races to keep things legit. Justin's been car-free for the last 15+ years, having re-discovering bicycles as an adult, and falling in love with long-distance rides. Thanks for dropping in for another episode of the DO BIG THINGS podcast. My guest today, Justin "The Long Ranger" Simoni is a bikepacker, fastpacker, climber and FKT setter. He once hiked all of the Colorado 14ers, linking them up by bicycle. Then, he took it a step further and hiked Colorado's 100 highest peaks, also, linking them all up by bike. These are wildly ambitious efforts that hopefully inspire listeners to get outside and DO BIG THINGS! Get ready to hear about some epic human powered adventures. Dang - this is the last big route I always intended to do myself! It's that good, that big of a prize. Justin Simoni finally accomplished it, then 19 days later Nick Pedatella and Ryan Smith crushed this huge route on the Continental Divide in Colorado. "It seemed right on the edge of feasibility - that's what attracted us to it." Staying on the crest, they summited 50 named peaks all over 12,000' high, including much 4th class and some 5th class scrambling. "We didn't see a tree for two and half days!" "You can't make a mistake - you have to pay attention all the time." The duo went Unsupported, non-stop, through two days and two nights. "It is definitely a great route! Very challenging in many ways, and pushed us right to the edge."
In 2014 Justin Simoni, the “Long Ranger”, bicycled to all 58 of Colorado’s 14,000’ summits, climbed them, then biked to the next in 34+ days. In 2017 he upped the standard and in 60 straight days did the “Highest Hundred” (summits in CO) in the same self-powered, self-supported style. And his background is an artist, not an athlete. “I look back and wonder, 'Did I really do these things?'" Listen to Justin’s thoughtful discussion on “When is it too much?”, and how to determine “Where to draw the line?”. “Something is always going to go wrong. So just anticipate that as being part of the challenge. This just isn’t a physical challenge. Who’s going to stop you? Just your mind.” And lastly, what’s the difference between an FKT, an “OKT”, and Justin’s speciality, the “WTF”?
I am incredibly excited to bring you this week's episode with Colorado mountain athlete Justin Simoni. Last summer, Justin created a challenge he dubbed the "Tour De Highest Hundred" which was a self powered journey to and up the 100 tallest mountains in Colorado. Over 60 days he did something no one else has even attempted as he biked to trailheads, summited the mountains, ate an astonishing amount of food, and slept in the wilderness. It truly was an extraordinary feat of human endurance! In this episode we hear the tale of the Tour de Highest Hundred. What is it like to take on an adventure of this magnitude? What sort of misadventures did he have along the way? How does one train for something this intense? Justin also shares the story of his first known traverse of the Mosquito to Ten Mile Range from Trout Creek to Mt Royal. That's a total of 91 hours, 87 miles, and 30,000’+ of elevation (which are numbers that my brain can barely comprehend!!) I really hope you enjoy the episode as much as I did! I'm an absolute Colorado mountain geek and am so grateful I got to nerd out with such an accomplished mountain athlete! Justin Simoni is an ultra-endurance adventurer who is most well known for his self-powered, long-distance tours that combine cycling, mountain running, and climbing. He is currently preparing for the "Highest Hundred” in which he’ll climb Colorado’s 100 highest peaks, accessing them all by bike, in 60 days or less. If he pulls it off (and I’m betting that he will), it will be the first time anyone has linked all of these peaks by bike in a completely self-supported style. • Most people would assume that Justin has been a hardcore cyclist for his entire life, but he actually started riding relatively late. He studied painting in college and worked full time as a professional artist for years, living in an art gallery in downtown Denver. Frustrated with his car that kept breaking down, Justin purchased a bike and began to ride it as his primary mode of transportation. As his rides became longer and longer, he enjoyed it more and more, and pretty soon he was completely committed to long-distance cycling. What followed was a barrage of impressive solo ultra-distance adventures: cycling the Pacific Coast, racing the Tour Divide mountain bike race twice, and completing the Tour 14er, which involved cycling to all 58 of Colorado’s 14,000-foot mountains and climbing them... in just 34 days. • Thanks to his athletic accomplishments, artistic perspective, hilarious sense of humor, and infectious enthusiasm, Justin is truly one of a kind. We had a fun and funny conversation that covered a wide range of topics from his adventures to his time as an artist. We chatted about some of the techniques that he uses to stay upbeat during periods of extreme fatigue or fear, and we discussed how he balances his free-wheeling artist’s mentality with the monk-like discipline required to pull off such serious adventures. As usual, we discuss favorite books, films, and Justin shares the best piece of advice he’s ever received. • I appreciate Justin taking the time to chat during such a hectic period of planning and training. This was a really fun conversation, so I hope you enjoy. ••• http://mountainandprairie.com/justin-simoni/ ••• TOPICS DISCUSSED: 2:40 - How Justin describes his work 4:45 - "Highest Hundred” defined 5:10 - Significance of highest hundred 7:20 - Background of Justin’s self-powered adventures 9:20 - When Justin started seriously riding bikes 10:00 - Growing up in Connecticut 10:45 - His decision to move West 11:50 - Skateboarding and skateboarding advocacy 12:50 - Beginning cycling 14:15 - Pacific Coast bike tour 15:50 - Tour Divide 18:30 - Epic snowfall on the Tour Divide course 20:45 - Justin’s approach to hardcore adventure 21:45 - Positivity versus negativity in ultra-endurance 23:15 - Strategies for overcoming fatigue 24:45 - How he decides when he does need to stop 25:30 - Other techniques for keeping a positive mindset 26:00 - Justin’s ability to invent his own rules and challenges 27:00 - “Everesting” Green Mountain 29:30 - Enjoyment of truly knowing a place 31:30 - Justin’s approach to creating art 32:50 - The hard work involved in athletics and art 35:35 - How much art is a part of Justin’s life currently 36:35 - How adventures changes people 39:00 - Heroes and mentors 42:00 - Overarching goal of sharing these adventures with the public 43:45 - Favorite Books 45:00 - Favorite films 46:50 - Surprising activities 48:40 - Best advice he’s ever received 53:00 - Enlightenment through endurance 56:00 - Most powerful outdoor experience 58:50 - Favorite location in the West 1:01:00 - Justin’s request of the listeners 1:02:00 - Connect with Justin online and follow the adventure!
Part 2 Justin Simoni is synonymous with "pure adventure." This guy's self-powered running, cycling, and climbing trips are mind-bending in difficulty and require unbelievable mental endurance. He's well known for riding a bike to and climbing all of Colorado's 14ers in one fell swoop back in 2014. However, a few years later, that wasn't enough. This led him to bike to and climb Colorado's highest 100 peaks, nearly doubling the mountains climbed in his 14ers achievement.
