I enjoyed pushing my limits and seeing what I was capable of. I have competed in various World Triathlon events for NZ, including two Cross Triathlons, Duathlon, Aquathlons and Sprint Triathlon. I have also raced several XTERRA events, and love trying out all sorts of multisport including swim run and gravel - I recently did the TransCape swimrun in Dunsborough. I also enjoy bikepacking and have ridden some epic trips in NZ. I've also enjoyed a couple of epic camps in NZ run by John Newsom from the IM Talk podcast. In NZ I ended up with a group of friends who loved doing endurance adventures! This winter I'm training for the Larapinta trail run in August in Alice Springs and the Gravel Muster the weekend after. This will be an awesome training camp 2 months out for World Champs in Wollongong in October where I'm representing NZ in the sprint. Australia's 'Queen of Hearts' was born on the day when Dawn Beaumont brought her mother back to life. With a family history of coronary disease and obesely overweight and a smoker, Janet was (in her daughter's words) 'literally a ticking time bomb'. Thankfully, Janet survived her 2013 health emergency. And now, she's become an integral part of her daughter's epic Duathlon support crew - as Dawn takes on the world-record-breaking challenge of running and riding 20,000km in 200 days to raise 2 million dollars for the Heart Foundation and the RFDS in 2025. I had a podcast myself for a while where we spoke with famous journalists about their mental health and the stories that had impacted them. In any case, if you are open to more guests speaking about their stories and mental health, I'd love to be on your podcast at some stage.

Football, maybe athletics? I was inspired through watching my sporting heroes on tv. And thanks to my dad's love of sport, we watched a lot of it!Those days are now long gone, and I thought those dreams were left behind. When I started triathlon in 2013 I never dreamed of reaching any kind of heights, I just knew I loved it from day one.I played football for 26 years (much of which I spent chasing my first touch) and whilst I achieved some success, triathlon was different. Still part of a team, the amazing Tunbridge Wells Triathlon Club, my other “family”, but now ultimately competing on my own - no team around to do it for me if I didn't perform. But I persevered, inspired by those around me doing incredible things and in 2024, at 41 years old, I travelled to Coimbra in Portugal donning the Great Britain tri suit for the very first time and achieving one of those lifelong dreams by racing in the Middle Distance team for British Triathlon in the European Age Group Championships.I followed that up by competing again for GB in the Standard distance at the European Champs in Vichy in September and despite a bike crash, finished 17th overall.I'm known for my epic race reports within Tunbridge Wells Triathlon Club - I'd love to come on and share some of those experiences over the years and also to talk about how I reached new levels using an AI coaching app to prepare for stepping up to Age Group level, especially being time limited with 2 relatively young kids aged 5 and 7. My brother was at this time competing in Ironman events and mentioned the age-group with British Tri. A bit of investigation and it seemed like a possibility. Next event was Oulton Park a qualifier. While I was outside of qual time I was close enough to start to think it was possible. Next up was Stockton Duathlon and on a grim day I bagged a spot on the age-group team. Then COVID hit and my event was repeatedly postponed before finally getting to compete at Aviles. That was a mental journey almost not going 2 weeks before as I believed I wasn't good enough etc. classic imposter stuff. First experience of AG team was amazing, loved the event the race the build up wandering around the town seeing other athletes in GB kit. This year I had qualified for Vichy in Standard Triathlon, got there in the best shape I had been in, super confident of being able to deliver a great performance. Unfortunately my race lasted less than 3 minutes due to a cold shock panic attack in the water. Really interesting about how this impacted me and rather than throwing me off has provided greater motivation to compete.Qualified again last year for Middle Distance and Standard Duathlon for the upcoming Pontevedra, also aiming for the cross duathlon qualification. The big goal is the Zofingen Long Distance in Sept 2025. Also maybe a half and marathon PB as well. Outside of triathlon I am a performance and leadership coach and work a lot with talking about how the mind impacts performance either positively or negatively and how to harness this."Really interesting to chat about his mental issues and how he has worked them through.hope you enjoy his journey.you can follow Andy on Instagram @andyholladay1you can vote for us using this link https://www.sportspodcastgroup.com/shortlist-category/You Can Follow us  onYouTube - AMP GB Instagram @amp_1967X : agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.

Send us a textOn our latest episode features Paul HaslamPaul says "I was born raised in Chesterfield. My sporting background started as a child where I was very keen on football and later in my teens, cricket, tennis & hockey, amongst other sports. I struggled to get in the school football team until I was about 14 when I finally started to grow & bulk up a bit & found myself able to muscle my way about a bit more. After school, I continued with sport at college, mainly squash and then found myself encouraged into joining the Dept water polo team as they were looking for new additions. Now that was an eye opener. My first game I only played the 2 nd half and I was absolutely knackered by the end, so much so, I slipped and slid from top to bottom on the stairs to the changing rooms. I thought squash was tough till I got involved in water polo – the toughest sport I've ever done. After college I ended up working in the coal mining industry. My sporting life was mainly darts around that time. I later joined a Sunday League type football team and also found myself involved in the works cricket team.Between the age of 28 and 58 any remotely sporting connections I had were limited to recreational activities with the kids such as mountain bike rides on trails, not roads.Over the 30 years my weight had gradually risen from below 11 stone and 32” waist to almost 15 stone and a near 40” waist. Then out of the blue in August 2018, Karen announced to me that she was going to do something called “Couch to 5k”. What the hell is that, I thought. Well I soon found out as I was seconded to a support role, which basically meant I was doing it too. My initial response was to say to Karen that I'd probably run about 50 yards and collapse. By May 2019, Id lost about 4.5 stone in weight.9th June 2019 finally arrived & that was the start of my triathlon pursuit. Southport Triathlon was only my 2nd Standard Triathlon and my first-ever qualifier. And so, the GB Age Group experience was about to begin in 2022 eventually named as in a place called Olsztyn in Poland. Having submitted a sprintresult for European and World Triathlon events, I also qualified for Montreal World Sprint Tri  a as last gap spot for Munich Europeans Sprint Tri, which I had desperately wanted to do, for the trip to Munich, as city we came to fall in love with. For Olsztyn in May 2022 I managed to finish a totally unexpected 2nd place in the 60-64 Age Group.Since that very first event, I've gone on to do a total of 16 GB starts including mixed team relays, 4 events in 2022, 3 events in 2023 including another silver in the Europeans Standard Tri (converted to standard duathlon) and 9 events in 2024 including a silver in theEuropean Middle Distance Duahtlon in Alsdorf and 2 bronzes in the Europeans in Vichy. As mentioned in the show we have been nominated Finalist in the Sports Podcast Awards 2025 please vote using the link below.https://www.sportspodcastgroup.com/shortlist-category/

(Yes, I struggle to say no to things!!). I did well enough to qualify on roll down, but I wanted to be sure, so I drove to Strathclyde and qualified in 3rd place.Off to Mexico (2016) and managed a 9th place finish in the sprint. Shortly afterwards I moved to Australia. I'd got the bug and decided to fly back to the UK in 2018 to qualify for GB again. It was a double qualifier that year for Gold Coast and Lausanne.Meanwhile I was competing in Austalia and qualified for Ironman 70.3 worlds, but I decided not to go.Gold Coast sprint tri was in 2018 and after that I gave myself 10 weeks to go from sprint to full Ironman!  I did Busselton Ironman in 11:30 (ish!!!).2019 saw me do the Etape de Tour and then Lausanne sprint worlds a month later. Still for GB. I finished 2019 with anther 70.3 and another world qualification.2020 and covid hit. We continued to race in WA and I did SEVEN gravel race, another 70.3 (and another worlds place) and the road cycling event called Tour of Margaret River.2021 was my citizenship and with that my first chance to qualify for Aus. I trained hard for the qualifying race in December and the week before I came off my bike and fractured my clavicle.  Luckily in my warm up, I'd gone to the state championship for Duathlon and had won, so I redirected my plans to the Duathlon Worlds in Romania instead.2022 saw me shift to train running. I did my first 80km ultra in May and went to Romania in June (5th place) and first in the green and gold! I finished the year with UTMB Kosciusko 50km.2023 was the covid delayed 70.3 worlds in Finland for Aus. And another state duathlon championship.2024: I ran 2000km in the first 6 months to train for UTMB Verbier in July. It was cancelled the day before due to storms!!!Townsville Duathlon worlds 4 weeks later (4th)Now, I'm back to trail running and have UTMB Thailand in December and hopefully UTMB CCC in August next year! On this episode we chat to pone very determined lady.I first met Nic when we were over at the European Multisport Champs in Portugal, she had travelled over with former guest Robert Myler, who suggested Nic should come on and share her story. Nic says " Im a full-time working mum with 2 young children. Sport is my hobby and I love it. I have run from a small age, my first run I remember was a 1.5 mile road race when I was about 12 and then the school cross country races on the sand dunes in Irvine with the wind battering me. That didn't put me off and I did my first half marathon at 17 and the London Marathon at 21.  My main achievements to date are completing the triple crown in 2022 – the Highland Fling, West Highland Way ultra and Devil O' the Highlands races, completing Celtman solo extreme triathlon and representing GBR in the European Duathlon Championships. I run because I enjoy it. It's an escape from the real world and I get thinking space. I love the outdoors and this gives me a chance to see some amazing scenery. I always run on holiday (at the request of the family) as I find all the great places we can go adventuring to later. I'm also quite competitive and enjoy the races…the muddier the better! I'm a role model to my children and others showing that us girls / mums can do these things and inspire the next generation. My best and worst run moments: My children being at the end of my ultra races and running with me to cross the finish line, they are my inspiration and love seeing their faces as I near the end. Worst was when I had an undetected stress fracture in my foot which eventually broke, 3 operations over 3 years until it healed and was told at one point I'd never run again. In my spare time I coach, I was a tennis coach for 20 years until injury struck but I have now retrained and qualified as a personal trainer, running and triathlon coach with Glasgow Triathlon Club. I have been leading trail runs for many years."You can follow Nic on Instagram @epicrunningtrails_nicand her website is https://epictrailsrunning.co.ukYou Can Follow us  onInstagram @amp_1967X : agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteor our YouTube Channel AMP GBWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.
