South Park, AKA the show that introduced the world to Casa Bonita, is celebrating 25 years on TV this week. That's hundreds of episodes packed with thousands of jokes made at the expense of politicians, pop stars, and us, the faithful residents of Colorado. Host Bree Davies sits down with her friend and South Park superfan Kalyn Heffernan to talk all things Kenny, Stan, Kyle, and Cartman. A musician, artist, former mayoral candidate, and disability rights activist, Heffernan has a deep love for South Park's irreverent humor and the version of Colorado portrayed on the show, and Bree wanted to get to the bottom of that love. If you want to join the 25-year anniversary celebrations, there's a two-night live music extravaganza happening at Red Rocks with creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, along with their band-friends Ween and Primus. Of course, South Park is also cashing in on the immersive experience trend with a shipping container wrapped in Cartman's image, peddling photo-ops and memorabilia for fans to see and pose with. That'll be outside the concert and at McGregor Square this weekend. More on that here. Bree offered an update on BALLOT TRIP, our four-part investigation into the future of psychedelics in Colorado. To hear the whole series, here's where you can find part one, part two, part three, and part four. Last week, it was announced that the boarded-up Denver Diner would not re-open, but instead become a Chase Bank. The beloved late-night dining spot that had served the city for decades (even long before it became The Denver Diner in the '90s) was going away for good — leaving Denver with even less options for a 24-hour gathering place with affordable meals. Today on the show, host Bree Davies reminisces with fellow Denver Diner enthusiast Kalyn Heffernan about their mutual love for a dining spot that acted as an intersection for humanity and proved to be one of the most physically and economically accessible meeting places in the city. Plus, we hear from newsletter writer Peyton Garcia about hers -and some of your- favorite diners in Denver. Wondering what diners still exist in the Mile High City? I did that shit. This week the gang was joined by Kalyn Heffernan, candidate for Mayor of Denver.
We’re back with the forever funky, always entertaining Kalyn Herffernan of Wheelchair Sports Camp. We didn’t want our conversation with Kalyn to end, and in part two of our interview we learn about her teenage life, and about how music and activism have worked to heal this Colorado legend.
We spoke with the amazingly rebellious and talented Kalyn Heffernan, frontwoman and creator of the indie political hip-hop jazzy funk ensemble, Wheelchair Sports Camp. Kalyn is a natural comedian, artist, activist, and teacher. An avid storyteller, Kalyn gives us her take on growing up with hip hop, and her early life as a queer rapper. She challenges the able-bodied community to examine their privilege. Just how accessible (or inaccessible) are our schools, our communities, and the music industry? Kalyn knows first hand.
Hello, Denver? Are You Still There? was recorded in front of a live Mutiny audience with host Bree ‘Coco’ Davies and mayoral candidate (as well as mc/musician, activist, educator, artist, etc…) Kalyn Heffernan. You may know Kalyn from being the MC of Denver’s Wheel Chair Sports Camp. You can find her music in stores and online, but seeing her perform live is the smart way to enjoy her music. Of course you should also buy it, request it on the radio and for your favorite club to book them. Get to know Kalyn Rose Heffernan, the first queer disabled woman activist rolling for mayor of Denver, right here on Hello? Denver? Are You Still There?
In this episode of the Solecast I sit down with Kalyn of Wheelchair Sports Camp. Wheelchair Sports Camp is a hip-hop band out of Denver that makes light-hearted yet politically charged rap songs with a dope live band setup. The lead singer in the group, Kalyn is a disabled queer with a condition called osteogenesis imperfecta. Her condition is sometimes described as “fragile bones” and she has had over 100 fractures, this really took me by surprise because I have been in many marches & situations with her where shit could have easily gone sideways, but that doesn't deter her. We talk about her evolution in activism from participating in Occupy, Black Lives Matter, Standing Rock and her own personal/political journey that lead her to examine the plight of disabled people. She discusses learning about the history of disabled folk and how her music has brought her into community with disabled people all over the world. We talk about her recent tour through Mexico. She also talks about her experience as a music teacher at Youth on Records, the organization started by The Flobots. Pick up their new album "No Big Deal" out now on Strange Famous Records:
"not 6 months after I got those gold records I lost everything and found myself busking on the streets of Denver Colorado again. You want perspective? You want fame not to change you? Make sure you stay attached to what made you. That's it. That's all it takes." On this episode of Behind The Scene: Guest: Wes Watkins Official Site: www.facebook.com/theOtherBlack The song for this episode is an unreleased track called "Bear Witness" feat. Kalyn Heffernan. Kalyn and 8 other activists were arrested and spent 30 hours in jail. She shares her personal story in the battle to save healthcare. Also, John discusses a recent victory for free speech and the right to a jury trial in Durango and our Call to Action: DACA and 17,000 young Colorado recipients are under immediate threat. Wheelchair Sports Camp has spent years establishing a reputation as "Denver's biggest smallest band" through live shows, EPs and singles that blend Kalyn Heffernan's rap lyrics with rock, jazz and even country instruments. Their music has won them fans like rapper Sage Francis and landed them on the cover of The Village Voice. This month the band released their debut studio album, "No Big Deal." They worked with keyboardist and producer Isaiah "Ikey" Owens on the album shortly before his death in 2014. Wheelchair Sports Camp returned to our CPR Performance Studio this month to perform some music from the album. They also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about working with the late Owens, signing to Sage Francis' Strange Famous label and getting "roasted" by comedian Jeff Ross at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas.
Matt Sonzala visits with the youths of Denver's Youth on Record Program. The good people behind Youth On Record believe that young people – those who are both at-risk and written-off – have the potential to turn their lives around. They are committed to bringing proven methods of empowerment and behavioral modification through music education to youth in Colorado who need it the most. Their facility located on Denver's west side is a second home to a lot of great young people with musical aspirations as high as the city they are from (Mile High City, duh). There they can take lessons in hip hop production, multiple instruments, singing, and more and they can use the facilities to create and professionally record their music as well. Listen here for some real life stories from some of the students, and rapper/producer/instructor Kalyn Heffernan of Wheel Chair Sports Camp and jam some music produced and recorded in house by the kids at Youth on Record. Featured artists include Kid G, I$Real, G.C.Y., Mace Windu, Shewit & MC Loudmouth! Check 'em out online here www.youthonrecord.org and on Twitter and Instagram @YouthOnRecord
