Tonight's episode is different than usual because it's our annual holiday hang and we're bringing you a special holiday treat this year. A full-on Strange Famous takeover. That's right we got the whole damn crew in the house. The house run by Runt, The Brick Box Brewery in Tucson, Arizona. So enjoy this special episode of The DOD45 Show as we welcome the Strange Famous Records crew for a night of laughter, creativity and rapping warfare. We'll first dive into a holiday themed game show of the Meadowbrook Squares, where my co-host Adrienne Taeoalii will compete against Runt of Jivin' Scientists with the wit assist of the Strange Famous artists answering hilarious and thought-provoking holiday questions. From Cas One's sharp-tongue wit to Uncle Sage's matter-of-fact thinking, this game is sure to be a riot. We'll then get into a festive game of Win, Lose or Draw where Adrienne and Runt will go head-to-head again, accompanied by our special Tucson local guests Marley B and Donovan White. They'll each show off their drawing skills, conveying holiday themed images and phrases to the Strange Famous crew, likely resulting in plenty of laughter, misinterpretations and questionable drawings. And finally, to cap off the night, we have a highly anticipated rap battle between the lyrical titan's Sage Francis and Mopes AKA Prolyphic. These two wordsmiths will trade off with scissor-like cuts and tears, delivering mind-blowing performances. It's a battle for the ages that you just cannot skip. So spike that eggnog with whatever you deem necessary, slip into your ugliest holiday sweater, cozy up by the fire and tune in to The DOD45 Show for this ultimate Strange Famous holiday extravaganza. It's a night of hip-hop hilarity, artistic expression and rapping warfare that you won't soon forget! Where The Living Room Used To Be

The rap duo, Metermaids, are not from Rhode Island but they do have a strong connection to the state. On this episode I chat with Sentence and Swell about the origin of their group, the variation of sounds they achieve from album to album, and how they linked up with Strange Famous Records. Speaking of that, Metermaids will be performing at The Met on June 8th alongside labelmates Sage Francis, Cas One, Early Adopted, Mopes, Jesse The Tree, and Storm Davis. Make sure you're in the room for this as there's some special stuff happening that evening. I will see you there! Interlude song order: "Blackout Baby" from their EP, Smash Smash Bang "Get Down" from their album, Rooftop Shake "House On Fire" from their album, We Brought Knives "Quiet On The Set feat. Sage Francis" from their album, A Line In The Sky "All The Smoke feat. Sage Francis" from their album, A Line In The Sky // Interview recorded May 29, 2024 via Google Meet // Intro music by Cedros // Hosted by James Toomey //

Episode deetz: Tai & Adrienne have a discussion with Mopes, formerly known as Prolyphic from the Strange Famous Records fam on this episode of DOD45 . While Tai draws a stag with owls in its antlers, they have a well-rounded chat, which at times is a lot of fun, like Mopes' heartache being a New York Jets fan & Tai's heartache being a Utah Jazz fan. Of course they discuss Mopes' recent EP & his upcoming album release, but the conversation also dips into some discussion about racism, the 80s tv series Alf, Mopes' creative approach when it comes to making music, Madonna's book Sex, accidental deaths on movie sets, Mike Tyson's struggles & growth, working with Chicago emcee Robust, safety precautions on movie sets and they share some of their favorite lyrics. There are many other topics they cover so rather than read it here, just watch the whole episode. Ho Ho open up yo door…..or shall I say open up your drow….your drow, your drawer, the drawer you keep your pens and paper in, cuz tonight's episode of the dod45 show is our Christmas Drawing Party with the Strange Famous Records Crew. We've got amazing prizes to give away, but to win the prizes you have to draw along with us. Don't worry, I'm a professional artist and I'm gonna give the kind of instruction you can easily follow along with. Plus you get to draw along with Sage Francis and his family of misfits. So gather your family of misfits around the Christmas tree or if you don't celebrate this holiday of consumption then gather around a bucket and your telly to join us for a bit of drawing fun and a whole lot of holiday cheer. We open this episode in a discussion with Mopes & Jesse the Tree to explain what the prizes are, how you can win the prizes, and some of the rules of the drinking game….yes I said drinking game. Like last year's holiday episode, I've gone and turned this into a drinking game as well. It'll all be explained within seconds. The opening discussion will also give you some time to get yourself situated, to gather your drawing materials, your spectacles if ya need'em, and a beverage of your choice. Feel free to gather all your family around, cuz there's tons of holiday cheer, but as an advisory, be aware that there may be some holiday spoilers, likely language not suitable for some and a few cock & balls jokes. So dump out the spoiled egg nog before you get salmonella, toss some salt on the doorstep before you kill the mail man, blow out the candles before you burn the house down and prepare yourself to becoming the next MC Escher. On this episode 48 of the DOD45 show, Adrienne & @ArtByTai have a long-awaited discussion with Eligh. This episode features the first, of many to come, segment hosted by Sage Francis, in partnership with Strange Famous Records, as of now, titled "Sage's Social Media Lurk". (That segment name could potentially change. We'll see if it sticks.) This episode also features some poignant discussion with Eligh about restructuring how touring looks, fatherhood in his 40s, family life, the stress getting tattooed is having on his body, and realizing his ability to manifest the things he wants in his life. Some mini-discussions include Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, the 80's Los Angeles Raiders, McDonald's happy meal toys, Dukes of Hazard, Kendrick Lamar, Picaboo Street, Honey Boo Boo, Bon Jovi, Tom Cruise, Legend, making art on an Ipad and so much more. It's an honor to have him on the show and will hopefully serve as a gateway to even more guests from the Living Legend crew. On this holiday-themed episode of the DOD45 Show Sage Francis returns to share in our holiday discussion while we also discuss the 20th anniversary repressing of his album Personal Journals and it's selling out within 15 minutes of it's release. Sage also reiterates his valid position regarding Spotify and he also shares a hilarious story of the time his grandma took him to see the movie Gremlins when he was 8. They deliberate over lyrical content of 2 Live Crew & other rap groups of the 90s and how that music is looked at in today's era. Sage shares his top 3 favorite holiday rap songs and 3 favorite holiday movies which somehow ventures into a discussion about Lucinda Dickey, the movie Ninja 3 and MacGruber. Sage may spark controversy with his position on Die Hard being labeled as a Christmas movie and he also has a message for Mr. Dibbs via our Question From Dibbs segment, regarding his beard-clippings which were obtained by Dibbs at a Scribble Jam many years ago. And finally some very exciting announcements are made regarding Sage's long awaited podcast, The Hard Lurk, upcoming Strange Famous projects and most exciting, a Strange Famous festival in Denver in 2023? Yes please! You'll have to join us to hear more about that. It's just a few nights before Christmas Eve, and we like to start up a fire, slip into something cozy, gather 'round with our family & friends and do something festive together. Tai has created that "festive something" for you with this episode & opted to turn it into a drinking game with prize give-aways. Join Chris in conversation with hip hop legend, Sage Francis, about passions, process… well, really about life and music! Sage Francis is widely considered one of our generation's greatest lyricists. His career derives mainly from gifted wordplay which creates vivid narratives to instigate as well as inspire, but since it often derives from an accumulation of public disdain and personal turmoil, it's more about storming the castle than about watching the throne. Dubbed as the “forefather of indie-hop,” Francis originally earned acclaim in the early 2000's by winning the most highly coveted titles of the emcee battle circuit. With little to no funding, Francis sustained himself by selling his innovative “Sick of” mixtapes, all made by hand on the floor of his Providence, RI apartment. These were essentially bootleg compilations full of select recordings from his 12” vinyl singles, demo sessions, live performances and radio freestyles. The popularity of these tapes birthed Strange Famous Records (SFR); a meager, one-man operation in 1999. Despite having no official distribution, Francis' unique brand of music spread like wildfire via the advent of file sharing networks. This resulted in him attaining a massive cult-like following around the world, creating a demand for his albums and live performances at which point the bigger labels took notice. With his first studio album, Personal Journals (2002,) Francis daringly set aside the more boastful side of rap by catering to his poetic leanings and scathing socio-political commentary. In 2005 Sage Francis was the first hip-hop artist signed to Epitaph Records and soon became one of the highest selling independent artists of his genre. Rather than abandon his day-to-day grind at SFR, he channeled all of his newfound resources into it, allowing the label to expand in staff as well as roster. Having fulfilled his contract obligations with Epitaph Records, Sage Francis has returned to releasing music independently as he gears up to defeat the odds. Once again. “COPPER GONE”, Francis' 6th studio album, dropped on June 3rd, 2014 via Strange Famous Records. This indie release managed to break Billboard's Top 200 as well as iTunes top 5 for hip-hop in both the US and in the UK. In 2016 Sage Francis was granted an honorary patronage by the prestigious Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland for his contributions to literature. Francis continues to tour internationally and is developing a new group project with B. Dolan called EPIC BEARD MEN, slated for a 2018 release. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tpq20/support

In this episode I’m joined by Sage Francis, a rapper who was independent before claiming indie was cool. A veteran of the underground battle scene in which he won the Scribble Jam emcee battle in 2000, Sage was early in adopting a tour-heavy business model that found him relentlessly doing shows and hitting smaller markets in the 2000s. From the jump, Sage has never been afraid to occupy his own unique space in the landscape of rap music, incorporating influences from different genres of music, a rotating cast of collaborators, and a writing style that ranges from the fiercely political to the vulnerably personal. He was the first hip hop artist signed to legendary punk rock label Epitaph, and he would later go on to launch his own Strange Famous Records, where he continues to release his own projects as well as the works of other artists. Maybe because the deep love of hip-hop that this music conveys is so powerful that it allows it to take all the unexpected paths without asking false questions? ... Maybe because this unique flow carries a visceral but floating quest that is forever removed from any dogmatism ? ... Maybe also simply because Sage Francis has the pride, the humility and the talent that make the artists who count ? ... 30 minutes of words without artifice to listen without moderation. ... As I get older I find myself growing to appreciate hip hop more and more. In my teens it didn't grab me in the same way punk or metal did, and naively, I shunned it. My guest on this episode is rapper B. Dolan and he, alongside Sage Francis, was one of the artists who forced me to realign my expectations of what hip hop is, was and could be.The truth of the matter is that when your exposure to a particular genre of music comes solely from mainstream sources, it can be quite difficult to find something worthwhile. Like all teenagers, I rebelled, and in doing so I rebelled against the chart and dance music which was common in between my groups of friends in high school and in my neighbourhood. I took solace in the angst of “alternative” music.A lot of that chart music was hip hop and no, it wasn't particularly good hip hop. As someone who had deliberately placed themselves outside of mainstream art, I found that when I looked back in to find some shred of meaning, all I could see were empty messages and a sense of disappointment. That's not to say that it is impossible for popular music to carry a message. Now that I'm older I can see such a view is quite patently nonsense, but in the naivety of youth I certainly felt that.So in my teens, my flirtation and subsequent rejection of hip hop was the result of two things:A) to me, the stuff that was on the radio or on MTV had nothing to say to me. I was looking for something political, something which raged and had teeth. 50 Cent, Ja Rule, Nelly and the other hip hop that circulated when those artists were at their peak, was empty to me.B) I had no one to guide me. It was easy to find people who could introduce me to new rock music. Literally no one I knew had any inkling of hip hop beyond whatever was coming out of the radio that week. For many years I lived my life ignoring hip hop, thinking that it was all violence and misogyny.About ten years ago that changed. A friend opened me up to “underground” hip hop, with Sage Francis at the head it.At the risk of coming across like a snob, I've always found the entry point for hip hop music to be quite high. Perhaps it's because I'm a snotty punk kid at heart – those short, sharp stabs of music are certainly designed to make you think, but the message is fleeting, it's difficult to hold onto before you're off onto the next song. A hip hop record is more layered and more complex, it demands the full investment of your time. It requires repeated listens and time to unfold in your head. But I appreciate them. I enjoy spending time with an album, deciphering lyrics and meanings, getting underneath the complexity of the music and living inside it.Prior to this interview it had been five years since I last saw B. Dolan play. Weirdly it was five years to the exact day, in the exact same venue. In that particular instance he was supporting Sage Francis, an artist who also happened to be responsible for introducing me to B. Dolan on Twitter some years before.Fallen House, Sunken City, which bizarrely only came out five years ago but it somehow feels longer, is an album which pulled me out of a musical slump I'd fallen into. It's an awesome record, and one of my favourites. Although I do think his new one, Kill the Wolf, might usurp that.Highlights include:Getting into fights at the Westmoreland service stationA shout out to Passion of the WeissObession with musicAn almost encyclopedic knowledge of hip hopA little bit of PrinceRecording and producing 'Kill the Wolf'B. Dolan's evolution as a songwriterB. Dolan is a super nice guy, and to hear him close with The Hunter at the show later that night was a pretty huge deal for me. Also, Buddy Peace absolutely killed it. To see an MC and a DJ work together to create such a tight live show  was amazing. **TO LISTEN OR DOWNLOAD SEE THE END OF THE SHOW DESCRIPTION - POST TO YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE IF YOU LOVE HIP HOP !** On this weeks celebration of independence we have: Sage Francis takes much needed time out of his ‘strange famous’ and non-stop career to share with us his “best of times” as an artist creating his new album ‘Li(f)e’. In this interview Sage discusses ‘Li(f)e’ and it’s foreign territory sonically for himself as well as those involved, lyricism, soul-searching, themes including Christopher "Little Houdini" Gaye’s prison break, working with composer French composer Yann Tiersen (Amelie soundtrack), upcoming London show, Strange Famous Records and so much more. Unbelievably essential listening for all Sage Francis fans worldwide - he even records a special message for you all. The ever prolific Ras Kass joins us live from a studio in sunny Los Angeles to discuss and promote upcoming project with Beat Junkie DJ Rhettmatic “A.D.I.D.A.S” exclusively on Conspiracy Radio. Listen as a typically rejuvenated and focused Ras Kass addresses details on A.D.I.D.A.S. and its creation and projects prior to it as well as chopping up his newfound internet/technology game with Mista Montana and speaks of plans of work off the mic for an upcoming cartoon. He also reveals an update on the much anticipated Four Horsemen project and speaks of recently seeing with Kurupt just days before this interview. Save the Ras Kass and support A.D.I.D.A.S when it drops. Buckshot steps away from daddy duties co-starring his daughter in the background to celebrate 15 years of the powerhouse that is Duck Down Records. Take a trip down memory lane with Mista Montana and Menace as we reflect and remember the creation of Black Moon and its significance today. Learn about the evolution of Black Moon between the name switching from group name Unique Image High to High Tech before finally sticking with the name we all recognise and love; Black Moon!. Buck also discusses on Black Moons sound pre Finsta, cutting the original Black Moon demo, Evil Dee’s vocal coaching, samples and the possibilities of a sequel to Enta Da Stage. In addition we are also given nuggets on upcoming Duckdown releases including Random Axe's highly anticipated project and Buckshot's forthcoming book. QN5 Records is one of the most expressive and creative record labels in the history of hip hop. Their roster of artists and musical output remains unrivaled as they reach their 10 year anniversary. Head honcho and all round stand up guy, Tonedeff, joins us for a humorous exploration of QN5's history and their scheduled forthcoming release of ten albums in 2010. Far from a tame interview, this 30 minutes captures perfectly the wit and reality rap that Tonedeff and his colleagues create. Watch for the vintage Tonedeff freestyle at the end! Weapon Aid is Braille’s latest weapon (pardon the pun) and this time features the now single father at his darkest hour. Unlike any other of Braille’s album prior, Weapon Aid is an album engaged with intensity, soul searching, courage and above all freedom. Hear Braille like you’ve never heard him before on Conspiracy Radio in an all revealing stripped down, naked and inspiring exploration of Weapon Aid and his internal hardships creating it. Braille speaks to Mista Montana and Menace about Weapon Aids creation; including him “wrestling particular tracks”, healing, stepping up artistically and growing as an artist, new material including a collaboration with Evidence, his desire to seek different and bigger sounding produced songs and of course his new label Talking Textures which is in conjunction with Syntax Records among many other topics! Celebrate independence with one of Hip Hops most overlooked and criminally slept on secret weapons. A must listen for Braille fans and lovers of Hip Hop with a message Jimmy Powers has just released, what will no doubt be, one of the strongest albums of 2010.So it was a pleasure to welcome the man himself onto the show and get an essential history lesson, as we explore such themes as La Coka Nostra, working with Copywrite, the sucess of indie labels and more in an interview as refreshing as Jimmy's album itself. AND THAT'S NOT ALL! We world premiere first-play new non-leaked tracks from Necro's adventurous new album "DIE!" released May 18th worldwide. Necro leaps out of the pigeon hole you put him in on this new album and it will no doubt prove to be an essential album purchase for 2010.
