There was a phony article going around that Jello Biafra was going to reunite with East Bay Ray and Klaus Flouride to once again be The Dead Kennedys. It's not true, but why do the DKS have such beef? Let's examine some of the feud with this Jello Biafra interview about the legal case involving a lawsuit between band members.FRUMESS is POWERED by www.riotstickers.com/frumessJOIN THE PATREON FOR LESS THAN A $2 CUP OF COFFEE!!https://www.patreon.com/Frumess
Sadly for America, the Dead Kennedys' fire-bombing hardcore classic "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" b/w "Moral Majority" is even more relevant today than it was when Alternative Tentacles released it back in 1981. John and Marc delve into the fearless politics of Jello Biafra and the cracking music of the DKs on the latest episode of the Spindle.Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. On today's episode, I talk to musician Ben Chasny. Born in Los Angeles, Ben's family moved to rural Northern California when he was young. His recording debut was a heavy, free rock project named Plague Lounge, whose album The Wicker Image, was released conjointly between the New World of Sound and Holy Mountain labels in 1996. Holy Mountain released many of Ben's albums as Six Organs of Admittance as well, starting with his first self-titled album in 1998. Since then, he's released just about three dozen albums and EPs as Six Organs. Ben also plays in the wonderful psyche/noise rock band Comets on Fire, who have four albums on labels like Alternative Tentacles and Sub Pop, and Ben's latest album as Six Organs of Admittance, Time Is Glass, was released at the end of April on Drag City, and folks, it's fantastic! They were unlike any other band in the punk scene they called home. NoMeansNo started in the basement of the family home of brothers Rob and John Wright in 1979. For the next three decades, they would add and then replace a guitar player, sign a record deal with Alternative Tentacles and tour the world. All along the way, they kept their integrity, saying "NO" to many mainstream opportunities. It was for this reason the band (intentionally) never became a household name, but earned the respect and love of thousands of fans around the world, including some who became big rock stars themselves. They were expertly skilled musicians playing a new kind of punk: intelligent, soulful, hilarious, and complex. They were also really nice Canadian dudes. NoMeansNo: From Obscurity to Oblivion (PM Press, 2024) is the fully authorized oral and visual history of this highly influential and enigmatic band which has never been told before now. Author Jason Lamb obtained exclusive access to all four former members and interviewed hundreds of people in their orbit, from managers and roadies to fellow musicians, friends, and family members. The result is their complete story, from the band's inception in 1979 to their retirement in 2016, along with hundreds of photos, posters, and memorabilia, much of which has never been seen publicly before. For established fans, this book serves as a "love letter" to their favorite group and provides many details previously unknown. For those curious about the story and influence of NoMeansNo, it reveals an eye-opening tale of how a punk band could be world class musicians while truly "doing it themselves." Their impact and importance cannot be overstated, and NoMeansNo: From Obscurity to Oblivion is the essential archive. Learn more about your ad choices. Dave Dictor, the frontman of the punk rock band MDC, originally hailing from Long Island, New York, pursued his education at Boston University and the University of Texas in the 1970s. Dave co-founded the Reejex in 1979, which later evolved into MDC (Millions of Dead Cops). Relocating from Austin to San Francisco in 1982 and then to Portland, Oregon in 1995, MDC made a significant impact in the early American hardcore punk scene with their politically charged lyrics. The band used various names with the MDC moniker, and Dave Dictor, alongside his band, released influential material through Jello Biafra's label, Alternative Tentacles. After a hiatus in the '90s, they returned in 2000 with new members. In 2016, MDC released Mein Trumpf, a politically charged album, and their anti-Trump slogan was chanted at protests, and adopted by Green Day during a live performance.

Hailing from Venezuela, Ane possesses a captivating narrative behind the music she brings to life, the process of working with Jim and co-producer Paul Fonfara in the studio, and how she came to release Despechada on LaunchLeft’s label. Tune in to hear about the journey of these two talented individuals and stay to the end for the inspired song 'Carmela'. [10:18] Jim talks about his unique sound, the people who formed his career and the breaks he got early on in his career. [15:00] Jim shares how he and Ane met and how all the parts came together magically to produce her music. [30:00] Ane is excited to share Venezuelan folk songs with people who are not Latino. [31:42] The story of Yma Sumak. [34:48] Ane shares her love for Venezuela and the history of the music, and she also reflects on the experience of working with Jim. [40:29] The group discusses how the arts are funded in different parts of the world and Minnesota. The show closes with Carmela by Ane Diaz. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Often, you don’t need to understand the language of the art. You can feel the expression of what it is saying. It’s exciting to work with musicians who are willing to work outside of their comfort zone. Towns that invest in the arts thrive because they bring people who want to live there and visit. BIOGRAPHY: “Despechada means heartbroken or without your soul,” explained Ane Díaz about the title of her evocative new album, out June 9th via LaunchLeft. “It’s a very powerful word used for love affairs, but that’s also how I feel about losing my country.” The beloved homeland that inspired Díaz is her birthplace of Caracas, Venezuela, where she was first exposed to the music she would go on to reimagine for Despechada. And while she moved to the United States decades ago, and carved her own path in the alternative music scene, now she is melodiously facing her innate homesickness with these songs, handpicked by her mother, on an intimate Venezuelan folk LP. The result is a sonically lush and lyrically nostalgic journey through her heritage. “For people that lose their country, there’s always this sadness — this thing you can’t go back to,” said the singer and multi-instrumentalist. “That’s why I called it Despechada. “As time has passed, my memory of my country is fading. It’s almost like a loved one you’ve lost. I don’t want to forget their face or forget how they felt. So it’s this fear of losing my country that made me record this album.” The new record is being released by Rain Phoenix’s LaunchLeft, a Los Angeles-based label. Phoenix met Díaz in the late ‘80s in Gainesville, Florida’s thriving music scene. Their then-bands shared countless bills and even toured together. During the 1990s, Phoenix and Díaz connected again in The Causey Way, a punk-rock band on Jello Biafra’s Alternative Tentacles label. By 2001, Diaz had formed her own band, Producto, comprising original songs sung in both English and Spanish. Along the way, her dynamic discography has earned praise from the likes of Jonathan Richman of The Modern Lovers (with whom she opened for in 2018) and Michael Stipe of R.E.M. Looking back, Díaz said the long road through the American underground is what ultimately led her back to her Venezuelan roots. “After I went through a few genres, I realized, ‘this is me,’” Díaz reflected. “It’s my bliss. It’s really where my voice lives.” Aiding in the production, mixing and mastering of Despechada are Jim White, Paul Fonfara and John Keane. “I approached Jim White because his music is exactly what I wanted for these songs,” Díaz said. White is an acclaimed American singer-songwriter, visual artist and author. “He understands sounds that are non-traditional. He knows how to create sounds with tin cans and forks ... it’s a super organic feeling. I wanted him to help create an environment that wasn’t anywhere else, something altogether unique in regard to these traditional folk songs, and I think he masterfully delivered. ” Her family roots are further utilized through the album’s cover art, which features a painting by her brother Miguel. “We have the same nostalgia, he and I. You can see it in his paintings,” Díaz said. “This one is really beautiful. It’s my cousin Vanessa sleeping.” Though, that sense of family is something that pervades her work on Despechada — just ask her old friend Michael Stipe, who said this about her catalog: “To meet her, to see her perform, to hear her music, to hear her voice ... you sense something,” Stipe said. “There is a familiarity; there’s that kind of thing. That electric pulling … that you feel when amongst family.” Despechada TRACKLIST: Clavelito Colorado Pueblos Tristes Mi Nostalgia El Colibri Carmela Fulgida Luna Mi Negra Angelitos Negros Sombra De Los Medanos Duerme Negrito RESOURCE LINKS Podcast - LaunchLeft Jim White Music - Website Jim White - Facebook Ane Diaz Music - Website Ane Diaz - Instagram Ane Diaz - Twitter

Fugazi, Built To Spill, The Fastbacks ou les Melvins s'y produisent. Rocky , brother , was in town and Dino as well as Gina's son Zane , drove down as well as Jer. This was a bit of coordinating and even though I had to run home early , the family had a BBQ and I was blessed to be welcomed as family . we talk about Dino`s projects and brush into a bit of history . Dino Cazares : founding member/ creator of Fear Factory , Asesino , Divine Heresy and Brujeria, talks about roots of Brujeria ,as well as getting on Alternative Tentacles records . We chat about Fear Factory`s AMAZING version of "cars" which is originally performed by Gary Numan as well as play some music including my favorite as well as Dino`s favorite Brujeria song . Rocky shares stories of working at SOMA and Gina , whom we need to get more time to chat with, shares some stories with us. This is one of the most fun ive had so far . Great people and we barely touched base on all the chaos !! #FearFactory, #Asesino #DivineHeresy #Brujeria #alternativetentacles #OrmsbyGuitarsdinocazares.comormsbyguitars.comfearfactorymerch.comfearfactory.com
Punk rock is about energy, attitude, and message. It's been the gateway drug for a lot of guitarists and music lovers. And those forces are what steered East Bay Ray away from his bar-band gig in 1978. “The little hairs on the back of my neck stood up,” Ray remembered during a https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/forgotten-heroes-east-bay-ray (2016 PG interview). “I saw the Weirdos playing. I said, ‘This is what I want to do.' I phased myself out of the bar band and put an ad up in Aquarius Records and Rather Ripped Records. Klaus Flouride (bassist Geoffrey Lyall) and Jello Biafra (singer Eric Boucher) answered the ad.” And with the addition of drummer Ted (Bruce Slesinger), the Dead Kennedys were born. By the time they recorded their 1981 EP In God We Trust, Inc. (on their own independent label, Alternative Tentacles), Ted was gone and D.H. Peligro (Darren Henley) became their stalwart skin slammer. Through the band's initial eight years, four albums, and an EP, their subversive harpoon of jagged political commentary was tipped by Biafra's lyrics. That got the nation's attention, but what inspires musicians to this day was the power trio's cohesive combination of familiar and unfamiliar elements of punk and primal rock. Sure, you've got the power chords and the four-on-the-floor tempos, but depth and nuance under the biting messaging is essential to the DK's chemistry. Their punk-rock bangers have modal tendencies and atonal flourishes, and some of their most thrilling songs have odd-metered backbones. Their debut single, “California Über Alles,” is a take on composer Maurice Ravel's Boléro, no less. And nobody else in the land of the 6-string shreds quite like East Bay Ray. “One of the reasons our songs have lasted so long is the structure underneath has a lot in common with a Beatles song or a Motown song or even a '30s standard,” he says. “There are basic constructions that make a song work. I really had a hard time copying or figuring out solos off my favorite recordings when learning to play, so I'd develop my own musical method to get from one place to another. It's actually a lack of technique that helped with the music.” His creativity and resourcefulness don't stop there. East Bay Ray was the band's co-producer/engineer on most recordings, and he's tinkered with his own tone tools, assembling partscasters that best suited his approach. Ray has jammed humbuckers into the bridge of a T-style for a twangier bite that helps his rapid-fire arpeggios sting a bit more. He's slapped on short-scale Japanese F-style necks for slinkier playability. And, most notably, he put a Maestro Echoplex in front of his amp to create the signature clanging sound heard on his classic recordings with the band. (“One of my favorite records of all time is Elvis Presley's Sun Sessions. That is one of the records that inspired me to get an Echoplex, to get that slapback echo.”) “We just didn't know the rules on what to play and how to play,” he relates. “That's where not knowing something forces you to make your own solution, creating something unique and new, proving that necessity is the mother of invention. The lack of technique and knowledge helped create our sound and the music.” Before the Dead Kennedys' headlining show at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl on June 15th, PG hit the stage for a brief but illuminating tone talk. We covered Ray's economically rich setup that includes a single Schecter doublecut and a simplified, solid-sounding Marshall, and we were enlightened about why he puts his Line 6 delay ahead of the amp and what that does to repeats. Hello and welcome to TM pod SEASON TWO Episode 51 with my guest, the prolific, punk rock, political graphic art legend John Yates. John and I met in San Francisco in the late 80's when we both worked for Jello Biafra at Alternative Tentacles. We've been in touch off and on ever since and I've never stopped admiring his artistic output over the decades. We talk about our time together in that very vital era of SF music before and after the dawn of the 90's. Working at the label gave us access to almost any show or concert around the bay and we were at the right age to take full advantage of that fact, going out every night. The conversation starts well before those days in a rainy coastal village in Cornwall, England. John tells us about his punk rock journey from seeing The Sex Pistols on the telly getting arrested on the Thames during the Queen's Jubilee to his moving to SF to work for Jello. He tells a hilarious story of his mom's question after he told her he had made up his mind to move to the states; "You're going to move to America to work for Jello Biafra? ...are you sure it's real?" It was real and England's loss has been our gain ever since. Enjoy my conversation with John Yates. It's been a tough year for New York. This episode we check in with Geng, the man behind one of our favorite labels, Purple Tape Pedigree, and see how these fine “purveyors of weaponized media and information” are handling the pandemic and the uprisings. With live performance no longer an option, the model of mutual support demonstrated by a crew like PTP is all the more important. Geng tells us about the history of PTP, the benefits of peer-support, community activism, and why it's more important now than ever to understand hip hop as spiritual music. On today's episode, I talk to musician Buzz Osborne. Originally from Morton, WA, Buzz founded the rock band Melvins in the early '80s, and in 1986, C/Z Records released their first EP Six Songs. Since then, they've released over 40 more albums, EPs and compilations on record labels like Alternative Tentacles, Sub Pop and Ipecac Recordings, and while never achieving mainstream success - if that's even something they sought - the band is both sustainable and hugely influential, influencing everyone from Nirvana and Soundgarden to Helmet, Tool, Mastodon and many others. Their latest album, Five Legged Dog, a 36-song acoustic reimagining of their discography, is out now! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

Episode 47 Jason catches up with his ex-wife, Los Angeles raised, former Olympia punk, now fellow Portlander Star Athena. The two talk about Star's experience growing up in Los Angeles. Raised in a westside apartment down the hall from Punky Meadows, frontman of Casablanca recording artists Angel. Her brother Heath played in many LA bands, doing a stint with Angry Samoans among others. She talks about how as a teen going to punk shows she was repulsed by the sexual violence and harassment she experienced in the crowd, but that it didn't crush her love of music. Star and Jason met in the very early 90's when she was a DJ at influential college station KUSF in San Francisco and he was working for Jello Biafra at Alternative Tentacles. They discuss those vital years in SF before tech dollars leveled the city's culture and the music industry was exploding with alternative grunginess. They go on to explore their move to Olympia after attending the International Pop Underground Fest and they recall what they both saw as the D.I.Y. pastoral punk paradise they found in their new home. They get into her two bands Flying Tigers and SubDebs who both released vinyl on K Records. It's not all about the past; Star explains how her diagnosis of Autism in her forties has given her a greater level of understanding and self-acceptance. She also shares some of the techniques and practices she uses today to mitigate the stress and anxiety of life and the challenges of living with multiple chronic illnesses. It's an uplifting conversation that went on much longer than one episode could hold. Hopefully Star will be back for a part two soon! Thank you for listening! In college, Marc Tamo’s goal was to intern and ultimately get a job at Alternative Tentacles to get closer to his favorite band, Neurosis. After convincing Fat Mike to be the first intern he went on to help launch the Honest Don's, a subsidiary of Fat Wreck Chords. He later moved up to help manage Phat as the label faced the decline of the punk rock’s mainstream appeal and the rise of file-sharing services like Napster. With his career in music coming to an end, he found an opportunity in public relations and later discovered a talent for storytelling through videos for technology businesses. His ‘serious’ career hasn’t dampened his sense of humor and humanity, and our discussion demonstrates on how doing what you love isn’t always all it’s cracked up to be. We are fortunate to be joined this week by Jesse Townley. Jesse, also known in the scene as Jesse Luscious, is a veteran of the punk scene, having been a member of The Criminals (Lookout Records), The Gr'ups, Blatz (Alternative Tentacles) & The Frisk (Adeline Records). Currently, he performs in The Pathogens and Scene Killers. Jesse moved to the East Bay Area as a young man and become entrenched in the thriving punk scene surrounding the 924 Gilman Street Project. Over the years, he has been a volunteer at the club, and an active member of the Berkeley rent board. In addition to all of this, he has also been a DJ on various radio stations for years, and a reviewer for magazines like Maximum Rock and Roll. Currently, Jesse lives in the U.K. and works as a project and sales coordinator for Packaged Sounds, a vinyl manufacturing plant, which is a great fit for him having spent many years working as a release manager at Fat Wreck Chords, Alternative Tentacles and Lookout Records. Needless to say, Jesse has done and seen it all, and has a lot of great insight and stores to share.
