Speaking in the temple courts after showing mercy to the adulterous woman, He affirms His divine identity (“I am who I am”) and contrasts His heavenly origin with the crowd's earthly blindness. Those who follow Him will never walk in darkness, because His truth and the Father's witness illumine the path to eternal life.Sermon Notes • We're now in the last third of Jesus' Galilean ministry, with mounting opposition from religious leaders. • Last week's episode (John 8:1–11) saw Jesus expose hypocrisy, extend mercy to a condemned woman, and call her to “go and sin no more.”Scripture Passage • John 8:12–20• Jesus stands in the temple treasury and announces, “I am the light of the world.”• He defends His divine testimony: the Father Himself bears witness (vv. 14–18). • John 8:21–30• Jesus warns that those who reject Him “will die in their sins” and cannot follow Him to the Father (vv. 21–24).• He reaffirms, “I do nothing on my own but say only what the Father taught me” (vv. 28–29).• Many who heard Him believed.Main Points1. Christ's Provision: The Light of Life • In a festival marked by fading lampstands and pouring water, Jesus claims to be the perpetual, world-wide light that guides us out of darkness (v. 12).2. Divine Identity & Authority • By invoking the Father's testimony, Jesus appeals beyond human standards to the Law's own rule that two witnesses establish truth (vv. 14–18).3. Necessity of Faith & Obedience • Those who refuse to believe remain in darkness and face spiritual death (vv. 21–24). Belief and following Him (“walking in the light”) open the way to life (vv. 12, 30).Illustrations & Stories • Feast of Tabernacles Context: The temple's seven-branched menorah is extinguished at festival's end, but Jesus offers an eternal flame that never goes out. • Burning Bush Connection: Just as God named Himself “I AM” at Sinai, Jesus uses that divine name to assert His deity and to provoke belief or stone-worthy offence.Application • Confess Your Darkness: Identify areas where you've “walked in darkness”—pride, fear, hidden sin—and bring them into Christ's light through confession (1 John 1:7–9). • Walk in His Light Daily: Cultivate rhythms—Scripture meditation, prayer, community—that keep you plugged into Jesus, the source of spiritual illumination. • Bear Witness to His Light: As recipients of Christ's light, reflect it to others by living transparently, extending grace, and pointing people to Jesus.#hillschurch #beencouraged #nathanbell #evertonhills #brisbanechurch #brisbane #wesleyanmethodistchurch #hillschurchsermon
In this sermon from Rev. Benjamin Kandt, part of NewCity Orlando's Preach Your Heart Out series, we are invited to reflect on the profound mercy and patience of God shown in the life of the Apostle Paul. Preaching from 1 Timothy 1:12–17, Rev. Kandt highlights Paul's personal testimony as a model of God's transforming grace. Once a persecutor of the church, Paul becomes a prime example of someone radically changed by the gospel—demonstrating that no one is beyond the reach of Christ's love.Rev. Kandt explores how this passage stirs us to humility and gratitude, reminding us that the Christian life is not grounded in merit but in mercy. Paul's response—worshiping God as King eternal—becomes a call for us to do the same: to live lives shaped by grace and to proclaim that same grace to a world in need of redemption. This message is both deeply personal and widely applicable, encouraging listeners to anchor their confidence in the unshakable faithfulness of God.
In this sermon from NewCity Orlando's Bear Witness series, Pastor Benjamin Kandt explores Jesus' call to mission found in Matthew 9:37–10:5. As Jesus looks on the crowds with compassion, He calls His followers to see the harvest—people in need of the gospel—and to pray for laborers. But remarkably, those who pray become the very ones sent out. The sermon unpacks the connection between compassion, prayer, and being commissioned.Pastor Kandt challenges listeners to reimagine their vocations, neighborhoods, and daily routines as contexts for witnessing to Christ. He emphasizes that ordinary people, not just church leaders, are the answer to the prayer for laborers. The kingdom of God advances through faithful, imperfect disciples who step out in dependence on Jesus. The call to bear witness is both a gift and a responsibility, carried out in the power and presence of Christ Himself.
How do you hear the testimony of someone who has been terrorised and tortured? How do you listen as a perpetrator defends their crimes? How can two peoples who have hated and killed each other learn to live in peace? These are the questions Helen Bamber asked herself when she travelled to Belsen at the end of the Second World War and bore witness to survivor memories. She would spend her whole life working with victims of genocide, torture and human trafficking and her questions are as vital today as they were 80 years ago. Tune in for a riveting discussion as the broadcaster and author Nihal Arthanayake joins Oswin, Carla and MK for our season opener on why we need to have these conversations, why listening is as important as talking and why connection is our only hope for the future.
The Holy Spirit was the promised Counsellor promised to all who would believe. How does the Holy Spirit transform believers? Why is recognising our mandate, and the Spirit's help in this, important for us today? Thomas brings a challenging message to conclude our series.
The vast majority of Hondurans would have never dared to set foot in Nueva Suyapa, a mountainside barrio that was under the thumb of a gang whose bravado and cruelty were the stuff of legend. But that is precisely where Kurt Ver Beek, an American sociologist, and Carlos Hernández, a Honduran schoolteacher, chose to raise their families. Kurt and Carlos were best friends who had committed their lives to helping the poor, and when they accepted that nobody else—not the police, not the prosecutors, not the NGOs—was ever going to protect their neighbors from the incessant violence they suffered, they decided to take matters into their own hands. In magnetic prose, journalist Ross Halperin chronicles how these two do-gooders became quasi-vigilantes and charged into a series of life-and-death battles, not just with this one gang, but also with forces far more dangerous, including a notorious tycoon who commanded about a thousand armed men and a police force whose wickedness defied credulity. Kurt and Carlos would eventually get catapulted from obscurity to being famous power players who had access to the backrooms where legislators, ambassadors, and presidents pulled strings. Their efforts made some of the most violent neighborhoods on earth safer and arguably improved a profoundly corrupt government. But they were forced to compromise their principles in order to make all that happen, and furthermore, they acquired a large number of outraged critics and precipitated some heartbreaking collateral damage.A remarkable and dangerous feat of reportage, Bear Witness shows what happens when altruism, faith, and an obsession with justice are pushed to the extreme.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. True Crime Tuesday Presents: Bear Witness: The Pursuit Of Justice In A Violent Land with Journalist/ Author, Ross Halperin! As young men, Kurt Ver Beek, an American sociologist, and Carlos Hernández, a Honduran schoolteacher, devoted their lives to helping the poor. But it wasn't until they moved to Nueva Suyapa— an extraordinarily dangerous neighborhood in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa—that they came to a radical conclusion: The charity world was combating poverty incorrectly. In gripping prose, journalist Ross Halperin chronicles how these two best friends became quasi vigilantes and charged into a series of life-and-death battles through their grassroots organization, The Association for a More Just Society (ASJ): first with the gang that terrorized their community, then with a notorious tycoon who commanded about a thousand-armed men, and finally with a police force whose corruption and brutality defied credulity. Their efforts made some of the most violent neighborhoods on earth safer and arguably improved the functioning of a national government, but in the process of pulling that off, they compromised their principles, precipitated collateral damage, and acquired their share of outraged critics. On today's program, we talk with Ross about how a program like ASJ could work in the inner cities here in America, how it was offered to Chicago almost two decades ago, the positives of community involvement and how much quicker things could get done, and the drawbacks that the American justice system could provide considering the success that ASJ had was in a third world country.... Hello to you listening in Pender Island, BC, Canada!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.I will tell you something about stories. They didn't come first. They came second. What do I mean? Our oral tradition of narratives, origin stories, creation myths, and so on - up to the present time - came about because we are a meaning-seeking people. Our ancestors looked up into the heavens, saw comets and asked, “What does this mean?” The same with weather patterns, crop failures, upheavals - virtually anything they encountered and did not understand. They created stories to make sense of things, to remember the meanings. They shared those stories with other humans to connect, to bear witness to the lives they were living. And the same is true today.CTA: What would you like to learn about the meaning and power of story? When you're ready I can help. Today we will remember together the incredible calling and identity that we have as God's “witnesses” to this broken and hurting world. And it's more than just about telling people about God, in fact, I don't know if that was ever really the plan…God‘s presence with us and in us, has always been the plan. And because this is experiential and transformational, we end up bearing witness to the beautiful, personally nuanced, “withness” of God…the One who knows us and loves us …right in the middle of our mundane! Today's Passage: John 15:26-27But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. Sunday Morning Service on 8/11/24 with Brother Stuart Churchill's, "Just Bear Witness to the Light."
We revisit our episode with Sabaa Tahir.******"This is happening in our world and at the very least you can bear witness to it. That's literally the absolute least you can do. - Sabaa TahirSabaa Tahir's (“All My Rage,” “An Ember in the Ashes” quartet) upbringing in the Mojave desert, isolated nearly 100 miles from the nearest city, exposed her to an unforgiving landscape and also many unforgiving truths of humanity. Within this backdrop, one place held significant importance in shaping her worldview: The Motel, a small business operated by her immigrant parents. As she notes, “The good is what helps you survive, but the bad is what makes you wary and careful and makes you lonely at times.” Sabaa ventured into the realm of academia and later pursued a career in journalism, where her understanding of the world's imperfections deepened. The essence of Sabaa's stories lies in the raw exploration of sorrow and frustration…and taking action. In this episode, Sabaa delves into the experiences of her childhood that left an indelible mark on her perspective of the world. From the motel her parents ran, to sonic booms, to wearing (dreaded) dresses on Mondays, Sabaa's youth sounds eerily like a superhero origin story. She also opened up about the “outsized impact” of her time copy editing at The Washington Post and its influence on her writing. Sabaa reveals how she channels her outrage to resonate with her coming-of-age readers, validating their shared frustrations and coming to terms with her own.***Keep up with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter.
