Welcome back the lovely and talented singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Ms. ANNA MOSS. One-half of beloved political folk-hop duo Handmade Moments, the NOLA-based chaunteuse has launched an absolutely sensational solo project under her own name, leading a larger band on guitar and vocals, and she released a fantastic debut LP ‘Amnesty' in March 2024. We checked in w/ Anna at the end of a jam-packed summer for a lengthy, spirited, occasionally raw and vulnerable convo about this dynamite new project, her career evolution, the mental/emotional roller coaster she rode during the pandemic to manifest this music, among other associated topics du jour. Anna Moss was first featured on this program Episode 020 (June 2019), where the focus is almost exclusively Handmade Moments, and her musical/personal journey up through that juncture. Ep.080 picks up where we left off, spotlighting her new chapter: writing solo songs, her killin' band, crucial collaborators, and more. Then we probe a bit deeper beneath the surface to unpack some heavier matters and perspectives, too. 00:00 - Ep. 080 Preview 02:30 - HURRICANE HELENE RELIEF - iamAVL 06:00 - The Upful Update 15:30 - Introducing ANNA MOSS 20:30 - conversation w/ Anna [80min] 1:41:00 - Afterglow x Vibe Junkie JAMZ Asheville's Hurricane Helene MUSIC INDUSTRY RELIEF FUND donate via iamAVL "With the world outside her window rapidly unraveling into chaotic madness, Anna Moss found herself holed up alone in her New Orleans home during 2020's unprecedented global pandemic. Frozen in a state of paralyzing panic, crippling anxiety, and isolation, she was armed with only a guitar, and the voices in her head. A working musician her entire adult life, touring gigs and studio sessions had suddenly screeched to a harrowing halt. Online, friends and fans sparred feverishly, screaming at each other and into the ether, while the realities and insecurities of her precarious situation sent the singer/multi-instrumentalist spiraling into a deep depression. Manifested from the nadir of her own darkness and demoralization, Moss mined a medicinal muse from within, incessantly writing on guitar and rediscovering her salvation in song. Intimate, delicate, dreamy, messy, a flurry of new tunes began to flow freely, slowly liberating Anna from the suffocating clutches of her own despair. Emerging from the ashes of this traumatic, dehumanizing spell: a phoenix of deeply personal compositions that would eventually comprise Amnesty, Anna Moss's solo debut LP released in March 2024 via Empire Records. An intoxicating gumbo of bedroom pop and existential R&B, Amnesty is at once Anna's potent opening salvo and a righteous rebirth, too. Paeans born of an emotional purge peel back the rawest, realest layers to reveal ruminations on an artist's humanity. Throughout Amnesty, Moss treads distinctly different topography than with the idiosyncratic Handmade Moments—her long-running political folk-hop duo with partner Joel Ludford. Rich in ethereal harmonies, subtle sensuality, and melodies majestic, her album's stripped-down, organic-soul sound leans into throbbing basslines and pulses with a buoyant thump." Of all the death metal currently burbling in the cauldrons of 20 Buck Spin, SLIMELORD might be one of the most peculiar...and that's saying a lot!Mixing vicious cavernous death metal with forward thinking technicality and hints of psychedelia in their brutal attack, the band released their debut full length Chytridiomycosis Relinquished in March. Guitarist Alexander Bradley sat down with Nine Circles to talk about the new album, the shift in direction from the technical thrash of Bradley's other band Cryptic Shift to the more filthy strains of SlimeLord, his love of From Software video games and their influence on his lyrics, and much more.A lot of ground is covered in just over 30 minutes, so be sure to check out the conversation and grab yourself a copy of what is sure to be one of the most talked about releases come end of year time! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
James Tippett (Vocals) & Elliot Reynolds (Guitar) of Sheffield Hardcore band Rough Justice talk to Letty about their debut full length 'Faith In Vain' released on January the 12th this year. A semi-discography, the record is interwoven with violent, impactful and introspective material that gives Faith In Vain a unique feel and encapsulates what Rough Justice is all about. The lads talk about the UK hardcore scene, go into details about the recording of 'Faith In Vain' and as huge metal fans, the band has subconsciously introduced more sophisticated guitar parts and structures, without departing from the straightforward heaviness that has maintained their popularity since their inception. The band themselves didn't target a specific sound or set of influences while writing the record which is arguably what makes it difficult to compare with much else. Faith In Vain is a showcase of unique song structures and riffs that highlight the band's progression as songwriters without ever losing sight of their hardcore sensibilities. Please 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube Channel if you want to see more interviews like this. Thanks. It was a pleasure to welcome Conor Jordan (Bassist), Dan O'Connor (Drums)& Matt O'Brien (Guitarist) of Dublin Thrashers Crossfire on to the show. The band along with Kevin O'Connor-Conroy (Vocals/Guitars) formed in 2012, and have established their reputation as one of Ireland's premier thrash metal bands, utilizing a mix of sci-fi and horror-inspired lyricism and imagery with their own blend of the progressive ambition of old school metal with the aggression and intensity of modern thrash metal. Myself and Joe of Gama Bomb talk to the lads about their savage debut release 'Switch To Reset', signing to WormholeDeath Records, song-writing and riffage, gigs, the history of the band and many more subjects on this episode. There's plenty of great stories and craic also; check out Crossfire on the link below and please 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube channel if you haven't already. https://crossfirethrash.bandcamp.com/album/switch-to-reset Songs played: Switch To Reset © Crossfire, all rights reserved. It was a pleasure to welcome Steve (Vocals/Guitars) Aaron (Bass) and Luke(Drums) of Outsound. The lads are releasing their brilliant debut album ‘Megatherium' on June 9th. Their sound encompasses a new wave of progressive, hard rock carrying melodic vocals through atmospheric bends, searing leads and bouncing breakdowns. Tearing strips from blues, grunge, heavy metal and even sprinkling in some Beach Boys flavoured harmonies, the lads share some insights into the recording of their debut and how the band were formed. We talk about the work that Fintan McKahey at Ivy Hill Studios did for the recording of the album and Colin Bolger of Dabulga Design for the amazing artwork that he has provided throughout all of Outsounds releases. INTERVIEW: VOIID on their debut LP 'Watering Dead Flowers' by Candice Clark on Radio One 91FM Dunedin
It was a pleasure to welcome back Aaron Loughnane (Vox/Guitars) & Eoghan Galligan (Bass) of sludge/stoner band Slung From A Tree. The four piece which is made up of fellow members; Andrew Hayes (Drums) Steve Loughnane (Guitars) have finally got their debut release out called 'Voyage Into Cosmos' on the Cursed Monk Records label. Trying to capture Slung From A Trees live sound was always going to take time whilst recording and operating on a shoestring budget. Aaron, who produced the entire album has worked a minor miracle with their debut. He has moulded and twisted this slab of molten metal which contains crushing cosmic forces, swirling wormholes and stellar musical abandonment into a seven track LP aptly titled 'Voyage Into Cosmos'. Myself and Howard get walked through the process by the lads and naturally get completely lost but it's a wonderful journey to get to in this particular podcast. Please support Slung From A Tree by heading over to the link below and buying the album, merch etc. If you enjoyed this podcast please 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube channel. It was a pleasure to welcome Dave Slattery of instrumental Tech Metal band Ropemaker to the show. Dave, a multi-instrumentalist enrolled the talents of former Ilenkus drummer Rory Guyett for an instrumental album that's laden with huge slabs of riffs and unpredictable arrangements. 'Interwoven' is Ropemakers debut LP and certainly caused a stir in the Irish Metal Scene, myself and Danielle have a brilliant chat with Dave & Rory about song composition, life as a solo artist and an in depth look at how Ropemaker came into fruition. Dave is yet another great addition to the incredible solo artists out there in our Irish Metal Scene. Top Ware!
If you've read any of the press that came out surrounding LA hardcore band Sweat's debut LP, "Gotta Give It Up," you've probably noticed that the common theme throughout is that Sweat aren't a typical hardcore band. They've got a sound and a style and a swagger that are unique; hardcore, for sure, but with riffs and rhythms that range from thrashy to chunky to 70s rock (think Think Lizzy). At the center of the activity is the firebrand that is Tuna Tardugno. It's abrasive and confrontational and a whole lot of fun. We caught up for a super fun conversation with Tuna about the band's history (they've only got nine gigs under their collective championship belts, a byproduct of the band's formation less than a year prior to the world shutting down) and recording with Grammy-nominated producer Jack Shirley and their upcoming plans (tour? new album?). We also talked a lot about Tuna's introduction to the world of punk and hardcore in upstate New York and the parallels between the DIY punk and wrestling communities, both of which are near and dear to Tuna's heart. Oh, did we mention Tuna's a wrestler as well? Admittedly, my knowledge of modern wrestling is actually more limited than my knowledge of hardcore, which is pretty effing limited in its own right. Still, I am from the same hometown as Paul "Triple H" Levesque, so maybe I can hold my own a little. Anyway, this was a super fun conversation. Hope you dig it. Episode 66. John Joseph Of CroMags / Bloodclot. John Joseph life has had more ups and downs and turns than any world class rollercoaster. In this brief conversation, we talked about where he drew his strength and adversity to fight past his addictions and drive himself towards success. Many people fall victim to vices and never overcome or rise above it, but for John, he survived, he overcame and he pushed himself even harder when the CroMags fell apart. His story is outlined in his first book, Evolution of a CroMagnon, so I won't give you the bio, but we go into some cracks where we can hear more of his tale there and we go beyond into, into the drive towards his multi discipline training for the Ironman competitions he lives for. He has published 5 books and is working on his 6th, he is working on tv and movie scripts and he is also working as a life coach. As he approaches 60, he is still pursuing music with Bloodclot, which will have new music in the coming year. Many of John's peers didn't make it to 30 or 50, while he is healthier physically and mentally than most half his age. I love his story, I consider him to be a good friend and we had a great conversation. www.johnjosephdiscipline.com/ www.bloodclot.bandcamp.com/ www.twitter.com/jjcromag www.instagram.com/johnjosephcromag Opening Track of the Episode - Berthold City " Only Truth Wins" off their Debut LP "When Words Are Not Enough" Available March 18, 2022 on War Records www.bertholdcityhc.bandcamp.com www.war-rec.com/

As broadcast July 26, 2021 with plenty of extra palm trees for podcast travelers. Tonight we remember Aaliyah, a transformative talent in the worlds of music, film, and pretty much everything else she wanted to do. Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of her final live performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Exactly one month later, she would be gone, killed in a tragic aviation accident in The Bahamas that was also easily avoidable. After our rememberance, we started rocking the new tunes out this past weekend, with a particular focus on Leon Bridges & Chiiild, both out with new albums, along with new singles out from Lorde, James Blake, Childish Gambino & many other very worthy artists for our first hour New Muses Monday. Los Psychosis manage to cut their debut LP to wax amid a system that is groaning under the strain of unprecedented global demand. And we've managed to grab a test pressing! Wow, what a record this is. Authentic, dripping with fiery Latin fusion and more than a nod to music from a bygone era. Gone are the overtly familiar tones of a sloppy double bass and a welcome heralding of accordion and lap steel. Certainly very different from the psychobilly movement in the UK back in the 1980s this is, however, certainly a noticeable stable mate. There is certainly an imminent line up change in the band looming, but this debut LP from this bunch of Memphis rockers will long remain a favourite here at Record Box HQ. Secondly, Tobin scoops a chat with friend of the show Abril Gabriele. Since we last featured her on the show much has changed for Abril. Her angelic voice though remains just as mesmerising as ever, and we find out just what she's been up too. Jamie brings the excellent IKOQWE along with a cover shot of a much revered Bowie classic. Furthermore we have Test Card Girl's new release, a poignant and tender serenade to her father. It's a glimpse of what is to come on her much anticipated EP. And to top off an already excellent playlist this week, the mighty W.H. Lung return with a new album. We spin the pre-release single on the show and it's a banger.
She's a beloved voice in the Canadian music industry. Multidisciplinary artist TiKA has a lot of tricks up her sleeve: singer-songwriter, DJ, model, film composer, actor and advocate for the empowerment of female artists. Earlier this year, she added another feather to her cap with the release of her hotly anticipated debut LP "Anywhere But Here", which is full of 1980s-inspired synth pop anthems.

Ryo Kawasaki is a jazz fusion guitarist, composer and band leader from Tokyo, Japan. Kawasaki is best known as one of the first musicians to develop and popularise the fusion genre. Secondly he helped to develop the guitar synthesizer in collaboration with Roland Corporation and Korg. His album Ryo Kawasaki & the Golden Dragon Live was one of the first all digital recordings. An extremely warm reception greeted NuNorthern Soul's debut EP of Ryo Kawasaki music. The label's Phat Phil Cooper has decided upon a follow up. Ryo Kawasaki made over 25 albums in his almost five decade long career. There's plenty of Ryo Kawasaki's music to choose from. Once again, Phil Cooper has chosen to concentrate on Kawasaki's mid 1970s to early 1980s period. It is a time which saw the guitarist living in New York. Surrounded at the time by and often playing alongside some of the finest jazz players of the era. Therefore, it was a time of much experiment with jazz music and few things propel Ryo Kawasaki more than experimentation. His mid 1970s period saw him explore what was to become known as jazz fusion music. A sometimes heavy-sounding variation, wild with revolutionary, new electronic sounds and steeped in funk and rock influences. From that period Kawasaki lead several album projects and the band Golden Dragon. On these recordings Ryo Kawasaki's famous, personally modified guitar synthesizer really comes to the fore.
Singer-songwriter Leah Marlene's first full-length album is quite a curveball for those that came to her through her 2018 up-tempo, hook-laden debut EP “Arrows.”
Godcaster, cult-like psych-rockers and firm devotees of Judson Kolk, spill out their nightmarish vision onto the unsuspecting masses. Unsurprisingly pressed to red vinyl (what else) Godcaster's debut LP has landed. Or should that be surfaced? It's likely been spawned in the fires of an underworld populated with dog-girls, doppelgängers and pious iguanas. Spewed forth in a heinous incongruence of terrestrial vomit. If this all sounds a little far fetched then join in on Judson Kolk's cult trip and you'll soon be seeing religious effigies everywhere. Along with Long Haired Locusts. It's a nightmarish journey, spikey, narcotic music from a dimension of fear. Don't let that description put you off. This is essential listening from Philadelphia's most original band. Godcaster have a knack of putting you at ease with their surreal world. In fact, they make you feel like you want to be part of it. If you're as lucky as Richard then you may have scooped up a copy of the booklet. It's artwork by Godcaster's front man and limited to 50 copies. This has all the makings of an enviable object of desirability in years to come. Get on board.
The Bunbury band traded west coast vibes for the east coast to hang out with Matt Corby in Byron to make their debut album. Having built up a sizeable following from touring over the last four years, Great Gable decided to record their first full-length release at the renowned Music Farm studios outside Byron Bay. They approached Alex Henriksson to be their producer, who in turn brought Matt Corby into the process. As fans of Matt’s work, the combination was daunting, but ultimately fruitful for the four-piece. Singer Alex Whiteman spoke to Richard Kingsmill on how Corby influenced their sound, how the band emerged from the Bunbury scene, and also about how Whiteman’s sporting family arrived in Bunbury after emigrating from England.

Sunglass Moustache have literally just released their groundbreaking debut LP. Complex yet simple listening at the same time. This band of, how can we put it, weirdos from Texas, supply the bookend this week. We say weirdos, but it is said with affection and respect for their music. It's music that goes wider than just aural appeal. It's art. Remember Alabaster Deplume? Yeah, well Peaches from Sunglass Moustache is a walk down a similar promenade. And with the accompanying short film, it's also a departure from that. Sounds like a riddle? Well that's because, ultimately, that's what Peaches from Sunglass Moustache is.

Would you please help us improve the show by voting for your favourite track from this episode?Ms MoreauDancingWarSober to DeathTook a FallSimpatico PeopleAtlantisVote now! TweetPinShare We've been waiting for the Savannah Pope debut LP for quite some time here at Record Box HQ and it has finally arrived. Savannah Pope at her seemingly best this LP combines art, humour, tragedy, provocation, angst and musicality to create a soundscape on an unearthly level. Read on for the official press release from Los Angeles. More importantly, read on to discover how this record has affected us at Record Box HQ. Moreover we have new, short, Instagram destined musical snapshot from Frankie Cosmos. Brutus get on board with a blistering assault on your ears with War. Car Seat Headrest provide some epic intelligent indie along with New Music Golden Daze. After much hiatus in the run up too W. H. Lung's debut LP we play another track, Simpatico People. And before you ask, "Yes" we do have a 1st pressing of this LP on vinyl in the crates. Actually, we have two copies! Track Listing Ms Moreau Savannah PopeDancing Frankie CosmosWar BrutusSober to Death Car Seat HeadrestTook A Fall Golden DazeSimpatico People W. H. LungAtlantis Savannah Pope Savannah Pope debut LP is here and it rocks FTBOTRB review of Atlantis So Tobin has already described the title track of Savannah Pope’s debut LP as “her magnus opus”. I want to go deeper with this album. We all already know Savannah for her thrash-fuelled, gut wrenching rock and roll, however, she opens up her witty, comical and feminine personality here with magical effect. It’s an intense and personal listen. Even from the first track Just My Luck in which the very first seams of light begin to break through the explosive sound to hint at things to come. Daddy Issues and Creature have both featured on the show before and are Savannah’s standard rock meat grinder tracks. She attempts to reorder the molecules of your entire body with her blistering vocal delivery. Successfully. And then the clouds part, the sun creeps in and Ms Moreau arrives. Its abject beauty and mesmerising clarity mean suddenly you’re receptive to “vivisection porn” such is the hypnotic allure of Savannah’s intimacy. Yes, she’s singing only for you. The theatrical rock opera of Rock ’n’ Roll No More is part homage and part comedy. Savannah pays her dues to the history that she evidently embraces and forms much of her sound and character. And maybe she’s quite right. Maybe this is the phoenix of a once great genre reappearing from the ashes of industrialised band creation for nothing other than creating talentless celebrities. The fact that I caught myself unawares whistling the melody line of Atlantis as I nonchalantly scraped my way through the streets of the North of England...

YAWL is a collaboration between Denver rapper Ancient Mith and German producer Dot. The duo released its debut album, "A Pile to Keep, A Pile to Burn," in 2016 and has performed across Europe. This year YAWL played its first U.S. shows, including a recent Denver gig. YAWL visited the CPR Performance Studio to play a few songs. The duo also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about how their collaboration began at an Ancient Mith concert in Germany, filming a music video in a French castle and their upcoming sophomore album.
Korn's first record was a landmark for heavy metal. Let's put the writing and recording of the album in context.
The SIR Band released its debut album, "So Cold," late last year. The Denver trio traveled to California to record it in a West Hollywood studio, where pop stars Shania Twain and Kelly Rowland were also recording at the time. The band cites a wide variety of musical influences including '60s soul, '90s alternative rock and present-day pop. The SIR Band visited the CPR Performance Studio to play four songs from "So Cold." The band also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about paying tribute to one of the members' late fiancé on the album and performing at the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, four years in a row.
Sir Mix-a-Lot and his partner, Nasty Nes, founded the Nastymix record label in 1983. Mix-a-Lot's first hit, released in 1987, was the single "Posse on Broadway," whose title referred to Broadway in Seattle's Capitol Hill district near where he had grown up. The "Godzilla" remix of "Posse on Broadway" contained a sample from David Bowie's 1975 hit "Fame," but neither the album version nor the original seven-inch edit, which was used for the video, used the Bowie sample. The song made the Top 100 but quickly disappeared, although it remains popular in the Seattle area for its references to many local landmarks. Swass, Sir Mix-a-Lot's debut album, was released in 1988 with two other singles: "Square-Dance Rap" and a hip hop cover of the Black Sabbathsong "Iron Man" backed by the band Metal Church. In 1990, the Recording Industry Association of America certified the Swass lp platinum.
Mona Magno (aka Monalicious) is the singer-songwriter and baritone ukulele player behind Twin Flame Medicine. The band played four songs and Magno spoke with Alisha Sweeney about balancing various musical projects and recording the album in Fort Collins.

Ghost Tapes creates a blend of classic genres on its debut self-titled LP. Singer Ishka Phoenix leads the Denver quintet with remarkably soulful vocals while the band borrows elements from jazz, R&B and hip-hop. The band's energetic live show won them new fans at this year's Westword Music Showcase and Underground Music Showcase in Denver. Ghost Tapes stopped by the CPR Performance Studio last month before its album release show. The band members played four songs and spoke with Alisha Sweeney about waiting over a year to release the finished album, their songwriting process and creating a "shrine" to acknowledge their appreciation for the Denver music scene.
Greg Gonzalez started making music as Cigarettes After Sex in 2008. After nearly a decade of relative obscurity, the El Paso singer and guitarist released his debut album in June. The dreamlike ambient rock of the self-titled LP quickly won over fans and critics alike. Cigarettes After Sex joined us in the CPR Performance Studio this week before a headlining show at the Bluebird Theater. The band played four songs from its album and Gonzalez spoke with Jeremy Petersen about how moving to New York changed the trajectory of the band, receiving high praise from French singer Françoise Hardy and his aspiration to work on film soundtracks.
The music of Ancient Elk is hard to define. The Denver quartet has won a Westword Music Award in both the "avant-garde" and "Americana" categories. But it also incorporates jazz, psych-rock and folk on its debut self-titled album, which it released this week. Ancient Elk visited the CPR Performance Studio to play four songs from the LP. The members also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about writing the album over the course of three years, the coloring book they're offering with "Ancient Elk" and their connection to the Moon Magnet music collective in Denver.
This cast was originally planned to be our inaugural episode of The Music Ark, before Brand New went all Brand New on everyone and we had to scramble (not complaining). My brother (Gavin) and I (Noah) decided to kick things off with a discussion of our Top 10 Favorite Debut Albums. The Freshmen outings if you will; which naturally led us to planning Top 10's for Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Albums. You can look forward to hearing those episodes and much more in the coming weeks and months from this feed, Stay Tuned... *Note: All of the music used in the podcast was sourced from physical and/or digital copies of the albums purchased by either Gavin or Noah and in some cases both. Male Blonding performed three new songs in the CPR Performance Studio last month. The members also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about working with a producer for the first time, the themes of discomfort on the album and playing the Underground Music Showcase in Denver this month.
The story of Bison Bone begins in Oklahoma, where singer and guitarist Courtney Whitehead launched his music career playing at barnyard parties. Eventually Whitehead made his way to Denver, where he recruited singer Brianna Straut after watching her perform a Gillian Welch song at 3 Kings Tavern. Bison Bone recently released its debut album, "History Of Falling." The country-rock band stopped in for a studio session just before its release. The quintet performed four songs from the album and spoke with Jeremy Petersen about the band's origin, recording the album mostly live and the influence of artists like Woody Guthrie and JJ Cale.
Overcoats are emerging as one of the most exciting young bands of 2017. The New York duo recently performed at South By Southwest, appeared at NPR headquarters for a Tiny Desk Concert and landed an opening spot for Maggie Rogers' North American tour -- including a stop at Denver's Larimer Lounge last week.

They also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about working with the late Owens, signing to Sage Francis' Strange Famous label and getting "roasted" by comedian Jeff Ross at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas.
