In this episode, Kevin discusses his lifelong passion for art, how physical challenges like poor eyesight influenced his impressionistic style, and his innovative "magic grid" technique that enhances his compositions. He also recounts how meeting teachers and mentors changed his perspective on his vision for his work as well as traveling extensively throughout his life. He also tells us about his new book "Reflections on a Pond" which took over 10 years to complete. The book chronicles a full year of the view of the pond in his backyard, thus turning it into a poetic journal of his work. Kevin emphasizes the importance of painting for yourself, staying curious, and to paint what inspires you, not just chase the market. He also shares his advice for aspiring artists to focus on continuous improvement rather than perfection as that is the key to having success. Brian Buckrell is a full-time Canadian painter. After a long, successful career as a Professor of Veterinary Medicine, he made the decision to switch to a career doing one of the hardest things known to humankind: painting fine art. The transition wasn't easy - especially doing so much later in life while in his sixties. He admits there were times he felt like quitting. However, he stuck with it. Brian doggedly continued developing his painting skills. Recognizing the importance of learning the fundamentals of the craft, he attended many workshops and enrolled full-time at the highly acclaimed Jeff Watts Atelier. Buckrell's determination and dedication to the craft finally paid off. Today, despite challenging health issues that both he and his wife, Cathy, have to deal with, he enthusiastically creates bold, beautiful, expressive paintings of the great outdoors that they so much enjoy together. Because of the joy viewers experience in seeing his art, Brian's colorful paintings grace the homes of many collectors around the world. Acrylic is Brian's medium of choice. Modern innovations and developments in acrylic paint provide an exciting medium and playground for Brian to explore and experiment. It allows him to paint quickly what he loves to paint in the way he wants to paint. And, most of all – have fun! Now in his late seventies, Brian Buckrell proves that it's never too late to paint and have the Freedom to Play. Heal our Division

America is deeply divided, largely driven by our declining distrust in government, institutions, and media outlets. This decline of American media isn't hard to see. Turn on the tv, and you'll often struggle to distinguish what qualifies as journalism vs entertainment. Provocative commentary has taken precedence over asking questions and collecting facts. News anchors posing as neutral moderators often make themselves the star of the show. They're only willing to interview guests who reflect similar opinions and political identities. When they do, the result is often a surface level conversation lasting mere minutes. My name is Kevin MacPherson, and I feel that there must be a better way forward. Our media distrust can't continue if we want to maintain the social fabric of our country. As a result, I started the Heal our Division Podcast. Each week, I host a long form conversation with someone directly involved and impacted by today's most pressing issues. Guests share their story without interruptions, provide commentary, and answer the questions that often go unaddressed. They're also challenged to address opposing views and criticism, even if uncomfortable. The goal of the podcast is always the same. Speak with those directly involved in today's issues, identify solutions, and demonstrate that we can heal our division as people despite our differences. Left, right, center, or independent - I invite you to join me with an open mind as we work to heal the division in our country, one interview at a time.

Frank Serrano's paintings have a sense of atmospheric depth that seem to extend far beyond the two dimensional surface of a canvas. As you look at one of his Western landscape paintings, it's as if you can feel the summer heat enveloping California's Owens Valley. You feel a breeze gently tugging at your soul as you gaze in awe upon the purple glow of the fading light of the setting sun cast upon the immense Eastern Sierras. This is Edgar Payne country.  Inspired by Payne as well as artists Sam Hyde Harris, Frank Tenney Johnson, Maynard Dixon and others, Frank's paintings reflect his own developed style filled with incredible passion that beautifully capture the dramatic atmosphere and stunning light that infuses the vast landscape of the West. Frank says that painting on location enriches his life. His paintings do not exist as mere pictures. They are like a cinematic film that stirs your heart with a deep emotional response to the story that unfolds before you of the epic Western landscape and the people who inhabit its vast spaces.  Years of outdoor painting has honed Frank's sensitivity to the landscape. Frank Serrano's keen sense of observation and heartfelt emotional response to the Western landscape enable him to paint not only the scene before him, but also The Air Between Things. Kevin Macpherson took time a month ago from his painting schedule to Zoom with me on the podcast. He's a renowned painter and author who has written four instructional books and was one of the very first artists to start writing these types of books in the early 90s. Kevin also had a PBS show that lasted for two years with 26 episodes - and he's an amazing painter, I've always been a fan of his work.Kevin paints with an impressionistic plein air style that he does so well it's become iconic. When you see a Kevin Macpherson painting you know it can't be anyone else's work. Now he's doing other things that are very interesting including portrait paintings, (which I would have never thought he would go that route) sculpture, etc. but you know he's an artist, and when you are an artist you look for those components in your life that are unique and different that excite you. These days Kevin produces videos aimed at teaching the fundamentals of plein air painting on location while simultaneously doing these wonderful small stone sculptures that beauty lies in their simplicity. Kevin also operates a foundation for children and the arts, he's clearly a very deep, and kind individual. Come to think of it, I've never seen Kevin without a smile. It's a wonderful passion that he has for his profession.

Michael Chamberlain says that if Vincent Van Gogh were alive today, he would be a vlogger on YouTube. Van Gogh was a prolific letter writer to an audience of one - his brother Theo. However, as a vlogger on YouTube van Gogh’s message would likely reach hundreds of thousands of fans. As a 21st century California-based impressionist, Michael inspires an audience on YouTube of well over 160,000 subscribers. In his videos, he tries to show the mistakes he makes. He candidly admits that none of the paintings in his videos are gallery ready. Upon returning to his home studio, he tenaciously works out whatever problems they may have until they are ready to hang in a gallery. You know that old adage, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?” Michael says it isn’t true! He says an old dog has more time and experiences that can make us better students of painting. The key to learning is coming to grips with the rate of failure. Failure is a necessary part of the process. When first starting out learning to paint it’s all too easy to believe in the myth of the genius. Michael admonishes that we can’t allow ourselves to buy into the illusion that professional artists turn out one great painting after another. Indeed, there are many failures in between the good ones. Michael says that the difference between a good painter and a great painter is the ability to say “I’m going to figure this out and I’m going to be tenacious about solving these problems.” And that is exactly what he strives to do: Michael Chamberlain is tenaciously forging his own way.
