Ever notice how loss can drop a marriage into two wildly different time-zones? One spouse wants to talk it out while the other goes radio-silent. In this week's episode of Master Your Marriage, we sit down with grief coach and children's-book author Jennifer Morris to unpack how couples can stay yoked when death, empty nests, or any major life change rattles the compass. From Sharla's raw reflections on losing her dad last weekend to Jennifer's story of losing her mother to suicide, we explore the complexities of grief within marriage. Welcome to this new episode of Beyond the Thesis with Papa PhD! In this episode, host David Mendes sits down with Morgan Foret, who brings a fresh perspective on navigating the journey from academia to industry. Morgan shares her personal story, beginning with her undergraduate studies in cell biology, an international research internship in Germany, and her PhD in pharmacology at McGill University, where she focused on Alzheimer's disease. Now working in regulatory affairs at Thermo Fisher, Morgan discusses the realities and misconceptions of moving into industry after a PhD. Together, David and Morgan unpack the challenges she faced and the transferable skills and career strategies that helped her smoothly transition out of academia and into regulatory affairs. Morgan Foret's journey in science began at the University of Calgary, where she earned her undergraduate degree in cell biology. Driven by curiosity, Morgan spent a year on academic exchange at Lund University in Sweden, conducting undergraduate research that expanded her international perspective. Back in Calgary, she explored the world of nanoparticles and lung cells, gaining hands-on experience using an atomic force microscope, a time she remembers fondly for the engaging research and the thrill of discovery. After graduation, Morgan pursued an industry internship in Germany through the DAAD RISE Professional program, spending three months at Merck in Darmstadt. There, she crossed into the world of industrial research, getting a firsthand look at how scientific discoveries move from lab to industry. Throughout her journey, Morgan has combined academic excellence, international experience, and research initiative, shaping her as a promising and well-rounded scientist. What we covered in the interview: Embrace Hands-On Industry Experience Early: Programs like the DAAD RISE internship in Germany or organizing/attending industry networking events during your studies are game-changers, helping you understand how your research background can translate to industry roles and widen your global perspective. Leverage Transferable Skills, Not Just Your Title: Don't underestimate the power of skills honed during your academic journey—project management, communication, collaboration, and resilience. Learn to highlight these when applying for roles, even if your previous title doesn't match the new one exactly. Stay Curious & Build Your “Organic” Network: Networking doesn't have to be intimidating or formal. Reach out to peers a year or two ahead of you, connect with alumni, or even organize your own events. Be guided by curiosity; those casual conversations can open doors and demystify the industry landscape. Whether you're considering a move to industry or just want to understand what really happens after the PhD, this episode is packed with practical advice, personal anecdotes, and inspiration. This episode comes straight from the heart. No filters—just real conversation about what it means to show up. We talk about the power of giving without expecting anything in return… and the humbling experience of learning how to receive. We explore purpose, faith, taking bold steps into the unknown, and the kind of seeds we all plant with the way we treat people. If you've ever wrestled with what it looks like to bet on yourself, live with intention, or stay open to life's curveballs, this one's for you....Five takeaways from this episode: Giving is Easy. Receiving Takes Work. Most high-achievers are natural givers—but learning to receive with humility and openness is just as important. You can't pour into others forever without being willing to let others pour into you.Purpose Leads the Way.Making bold moves—especially when the future is unclear—gets a whole lot easier when you're anchored in your core values and purpose. Purpose doesn't always come with a map, but it gives you the courage to keep moving forward. Stay Curious and Ask Better Questions.Curiosity is a superpower. Whether you're connecting with others, leading a team, or just navigating daily life, asking great questions opens doors to deeper relationships and unexpected opportunities. Abundance is a Mindset.Living from a place of abundance—not fear or scarcity—makes it easier to make tough decisions, try new things, and keep your eyes open for the good around you. What you focus on, you find.Bring Your Glove.Be ready for connection. Be ready to give. Be ready to receive. Life is like a game of catch—those who come prepared, stay engaged, and remain open to the tosses and returns are the ones who grow.... One truthThe way you consistently show up for others will determine who shows up for you when it matters most. That's the harvest. Keep planting.

Technology disruption continues to reshape how we work, learn, and connect. From bookstores to browsers, the leap from physical to digital has transformed not only industries, but expectations. According to McKinsey & Company, generative AI alone could add up to $4.4 trillion annually to the global economy, making it vital to understand how curiosity, learning, and innovation fuel this transformation. So what can we learn about today's digital evolution by revisiting the early internet days, especially from someone who built online experiences before “online” was mainstream? On this episode of DisruptED, host Ron J Stefanski reconnects with longtime friend and fellow Borders alum Scott Wilder, now the Global Head of Digital Self-Serve at LastPass. Together, they explore how bookstores, browsers, and bold ideas shaped some of today's most essential tech innovations. Their conversation tracks the early signals of technology disruption, from pioneering web platforms to building scalable, AI-enhanced learning and customer experiences. In this episode, Ron and Scott discuss:Borders as a Digital Pioneer – Borders wasn't just about books. Scott recalls how the company experimented with online media, store-level websites, and event integration—laying the groundwork for modern e-commerce personalization.Early Internet Innovation – From launching web support at Silicon Graphics to building web ad infrastructure at AOL, Scott helped define digital customer engagement before it became standard practice.Curiosity as a Catalyst – Whether in edtech or AI, Scott emphasizes how intellectual curiosity drives innovation, fuels collaboration, and helps overcome fear of new technologies. This is a special treat to have Scott Wilder from Last Pass on the DisruptED podcast. Ron and Scott worked together for 5 years at Borders Books and Music. As they acknowledge on these shows, they learned an awful lot about the kind of intellectual curiosity that fuels innovation.Scott is a recognized thought leader in advancing technology after leading a number of highly innovative tech initiatives as a key executive at Intuit, Google, Hubspot, Udacity, Coursera and Adobe. His passion for technology is fueled by intense curiosity about how to make things work better.

She's trained and examined aspiring guides for the AMGA for the past 19 years and served as the AMGA president for five. Angela's led over 30 high altitude mountaineering expeditions to the world's Greater Ranges and guided remote trips to the Arctic and Antarctic. Angela has a Master's Degree in International Mountain Conservation, is on the POW Alliance Team and a Black Diamond athlete. In 2011 she was awarded AMGA Guide of the Year and in 2022 received the AMGA Lifetime Achievement in Guiding Award.I love that she considers herself successful in mountain guiding because she still loves the profession and is still in it for the same reason that she got into it initially. She established a lifelong love of playing in the mountains since she was a kid. Her curiosity let her explore all facets of life related to guiding, and she hardly found boredom. We talked about dealing with burnout, giving back to the communities, her AMGA work, changes in the environment and the industry in the past 30+ years, and making a guide career sustainable. Marcin from Warsaw, Poland, asks: What are the top sales trends shaping the future of sales? Our conversation ranged from the impact of AI to the growing importance of a consultative selling mindset in modern selling. Below, you'll discover practical insights you can leverage to sharpen your competitive edge—regardless of what industry or region you sell into—and take advantage of these emerging trends. AI Will Power Sales Efficiency and Intelligence When we think about the future of sales, AI inevitably dominates the conversation. Whether you're a software rep, selling capital equipment, or providing professional services, artificial intelligence is quickly transforming the salescape. Elevated EfficiencyAI will eliminate many repetitive tasks, surface the best leads, track deal progress, and remind you when a prospect stalls. At a basic level, AI can be your 24/7 virtual assistant that never forgets an appointment or misses a follow-up. Smarter Data ManagementAI will digest massive data sets, then deliver concise insights that help you identify buying signals, forecast deal closures, and spot hidden risk factors in your pipeline. Relationships Still MatterAs advanced as AI might be, it can't replace human conversations—especially in complex or consultative sales. Ultimately, people buy from people they trust. Keep that fact front and center as you adopt AI-driven tools. They're there to free you up for higher-value activities, not to take over your role. The Return to Humanity: Relationships Make the Difference In an age where we can automate just about anything with tech, your core differentiator will be your ability to build trust and engage deeply with clients. Human Connection Is a Competitive AdvantageIf everything can be automated or self-served, how do you stand out? By demonstrating genuine empathy, patience, and an interest in solving unique business problems. Buyers are craving human interaction that goes beyond transactional sales. Adapt to Cultural NuancesYour ability to adapt and flex to the nuance of both cultural differences between countries, regions, industries, and companies gives you a competitive edge when building trust. In some markets, diving straight into business is a sign of respect and efficiency; in others, building rapport is crucial before any serious conversation can start. Being agile enough to flex your communication style to fit local norms is a hallmark of top-performing sales consultants. Embrace a Consultative Selling Mindset In the age of AI there is a massive shift toward consultative selling. If you're selling complex products, services, or solutions, you can't just pitch features and benefits anymore. To survive and thrive you must become a business advisor, diagnosing problems and developing creative and innovative solutions. Key Skills to Develop Deep Discovery Great consultants don't leap in with a pre-packaged pitch; they ask probing questions, explore unarticulated pain points, and let clients talk. This patient approach sets you up to deliver precisely what the customer needs. Business Acumen and Technical KnowledgeIn consultative sales, you often speak with senior executives who expect you to know how business works—everything from supply chain issues to profitability metrics. If you show up unprepared, someone else with deeper business insight will get the sale. Creative, Innovative SolutionsOnce you've gathered the facts, your job is to co-create a roadmap. That means pulling from your experience, internal product knowledge, and general business know-how to design a solution that resonates across multiple stakeholders. This requires both IQ (to connect the dots) and EQ (to communicate the vision persuasively). Stay Curious and Keep Learning A big part of stepping into a consultative role is adopting a lifelong learning mentality. Too many sales professionals stop reading or stop trying ne...
