S4E33: The Military Testosterone Test: Jenni and Daniel Unpack What No One Is Talking About

Modern Pleasure Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 5, 2026 22:15

The Department of Defense made headlines when it announced plans to test testosterone levels in active military members. The debate that followed was loud, political, and almost entirely missed the point. Jenni and Daniel are not interested in the political conversation. They are interested in the clinical one, and in this episode they take a current news story and do what they do best: strip away the noise and get to what actually matters. They start with the basics. Testosterone is not simply a marker of masculinity- it is a marker of health. Vitality. Mood. Cognitive clarity. The capacity to make good decisions under pressure. Too high creates its own problems. Too low, which is far more common, particularly in high-stress, sleep-deprived environments like military service, produces depression, fatigue, irritability, and a creeping sense that something is fundamentally off. Daniel's phrase for it, borrowed from their recent conversation with Dr. Rachel Rubin, says it precisely: I don't feel like myself. But the number alone tells you almost nothing. A reading of 450 might have one man feeling like he's on top of the world and another quietly falling apart. Context matters. Individual baseline matters. And the systems surrounding that number- sleep, stress, relationships, mental health, nutrition and physical strength matter as much as the hormone itself. Testing testosterone without addressing those systems is, as Daniel puts it, throwing a pill at a very complex situation. Jenni brings women into the conversation and makes the case that hormonal testing is not a male-only issue. She shares her own experience discovering her testosterone was in the basement despite being a muscular, physically active person, and explains why estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone together form the constellation that optimizes women's physical, sexual, and mental health. She makes the point that neither testosterone nor estrogen belongs exclusively to one gender- men need estrogen, women need testosterone, and balance is individual, not categorical. Daniel ties it back to the bio-psychosocial model- the framework that Jenni and Daniel have built their entire clinical practice around. You can test the biology. But if the psychology is suffering (anxiety, depression, unprocessed trauma) and the social dimension is broken, (relationships in conflict, connection absent isolation growing), the biology will follow. Each system pulls on the others. Fix the sleep and the testosterone improves. Improve the testosterone and the irritability decreases. Decrease the irritability and the relationship gets better. The relationship getting better reduces stress. The stress reduction improves sleep. You pull one string and it moves another one. They close with the thing that surprises most people when they say it out loud: the antidote to stress is connection. Not a supplement. Not a number. Not a protocol. The ratio of connection to disconnection in your life is one of the most powerful health metrics available- and it's the one almost nobody tracks. This episode is for veterans and first responders. It's for anyone who has wondered why they don't feel like themselves. It's for women who have never been told to test their testosterone. It's for men who didn't know that low testosterone looks like depression. And it's for anyone who has been waiting for someone to say that their relationships, their sleep, their stress load, and their hormones are not separate conversations- they are one conversation, and it starts here.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Fertility Wellness with The Wholesome Fertility Podcast

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Jennifer Timmons, MD, a board-certified family physician and longevity doctor, to explore why fertility cannot be separated from whole-body health. After more than a decade in traditional primary care at UCLA Health, Dr. Timmons recognized how often the conventional system waits for disease rather than addressing the dysfunction beneath it. She now blends functional, precision, and longevity medicine to help her patients build true vitality from the inside out. We talk about why your terrain matters as much as any protocol, how gut health quietly drives inflammation and autoimmune conditions, and why so many seemingly unrelated symptoms trace back to a compromised gut lining. Dr. Timmons walks us through the role of leaky gut in fertility, the importance of blood sugar stability for egg and sperm quality, and the everyday lifestyle inputs that influence cellular health, including light exposure, circadian rhythm, time-restricted eating, and microplastic exposure. She also shares which longevity practices are accessible to everyone, why social connection turned out to be one of the strongest predictors of long life in Harvard research, and the simple food order and movement habits that move the needle most for metabolic health. This conversation is a thoughtful, grounded look at how to support the body so it can do what it already knows how to do. Key Takeaways: Fertility is a reflection of whole-body health, not an isolated system. Optimizing your terrain matters as much as any procedure or protocol. Gut health is foundational. Leaky gut and compromised intestinal lining can drive autoimmune conditions, inflammation, and impaired nutrient absorption, all of which affect fertility outcomes. Even a nutrient-rich diet cannot do its work if the gut barrier is inflamed. Healing the gut lining is often the missing piece in fertility preparation. Chronic inflammation is one of the biggest drivers of disease and reproductive dysfunction. Identifying and addressing inflammatory triggers can shift the entire picture. Blood sugar stability directly impacts egg and sperm quality. Simple shifts like eating fiber and protein before carbs, walking after meals, and avoiding late-night eating make a real difference. Light, circadian rhythm, and meal timing are powerful regulators of hormonal and cellular health. A simple 12-hour overnight fast offers measurable benefits without extreme restriction. Microplastics and environmental toxins are quietly impacting reproductive health. Fiber, NAC, sweating, and reducing plastic exposure all support your body's natural detox pathways. Longevity practices are accessible to everyone. Whole foods, movement, quality sleep, clean water, and strong social connection are the real foundations of a long, healthy life. Social connection is one of the strongest predictors of longevity, even more than diet or socioeconomic status in Harvard research. Community is medicine. Guest Bio: Dr. Jennifer Timmons, MD is a Longevity Physician and the Founder and Medical Director of Timmons Wellness, a concierge medical practice providing hyper-personalized healthcare. With over 10 years of experience practicing traditional primary care at UCLA Health, along with advanced training in Functional and Integrative Medicine, Precision Medicine, and Longevity Medicine, Dr. Timmons is committed to helping people enjoy longer, healthier lives through a customized care model. Her expertise includes hormone optimization, metabolic and cardiovascular health, proactive disease prevention, weight management, and more, encompassing both proven strategies and innovative technologies. As Founder and Medical Director of Timmons Wellness, she helps people move beyond basic wellness toward longevity medicine, and build sustainable habits that increase not just the years of their lives, but their number of healthy years. So why is there such a massive gap between what your labs say and how your body actually feels? In this episode, we are joined by Deborah Maragopoulos, MN, FNP- an Intuitive Integrative Family Nurse Practitioner, author, and globally recognized expert affectionately known as the "Hormone Queen."Deborah explains why standard blood tests miss the true culprit behind midlife hormonal chaos: the hypothalamus. Acting as your body's ultimate "air traffic controller," this master gland regulates your stress response, sex hormones, metabolism, sleep, and thyroid. When chronic stress and midlife shifts hit at the same time, your hypothalamus gets hijacked, and no amount of downstream treatment (like focusing only on your thyroid or adrenals) will bring lasting relief.Deborah also gets vulnerable about her own health battles and shares the profound mindset shifts that helped her heal mentally, physically, and spiritually.*Additionally, we want to remind you that this podcast is presented solely for educational and entertainment purposes. You all know that we are living in a toxic soup of seen and unseen chemicals. They're in our water, our food, our air, our furniture, and our clothing — everywhere we turn. It can feel overwhelming. But what if detoxification simply became a natural part of how we live, not something we need to fear or stress about? In this episode, I sit down with my good friend, vitality expert and detox architect Natalie Lefevre, for a fascinating conversation about what it really means to support the body's ability to heal. Like many of the guests I love bringing to you, Natalie's passion comes from her own healing journey. After being misdiagnosed, experiencing serious health challenges, and losing someone she loves, she was propelled into a lifelong search for answers that took her far beyond conventional medicine and around the world in pursuit of innovative healing modalities. Natalie works with advanced diagnostics and blood filtration technologies to uncover what conventional approaches often miss. But what I love most about her perspective is that she doesn't stop at the physical body. We explore the emotional and nervous system patterns that can silently keep us stuck, even when we're eating well, exercising, and doing all the "right" things. Together, we discuss environmental toxins, heavy metals, microplastics, inflammation, nervous system regulation, grief, emotional healing, subconscious programming, and the powerful connection between body, mind, and spirit. Natalie's philosophy is simple: detox isn't a protocol — it's a way of life. And true vitality becomes possible when we address all of who we are — the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of healing. Whether you're just beginning your wellness journey or looking to go deeper into root-cause healing, this conversation will leave you thinking differently about what it means to detox, heal, and reclaim your health. We lay out how Show Up Fitness is structured in July 2026, from Level 1 foundations to Level 2 specializations, plus the Freedom Pass built around mentorship and lifetime access. If you're tired of guessing whether you're “ready” to train real people, this breakdown gives you a clear roadmap with live calls, direct feedback, and standards that actually mean something. We walk through the weekly live call schedule and what each coach brings to the table: exercise variations, programming, anatomy, mentorship, and deeper dives with nutrition coaches and physical therapists. You'll hear how we avoid overwhelming new trainers while still giving ambitious coaches a fast path to level up, earn CEUs, and stack specializations that improve your resume and your real-world coaching skill. We also get specific about testing and expectations. For the CPT, we talk anatomy requirements, movement patterns, and how we evaluate programming and movement competency through Zoom and video submissions. On the advanced side, we cover the nutrition certification with registered dietitian support, motivational interviewing, and the Vitality partnership that can include 80 to 100 biomarkers. For soft tissue and pain-focused coaching, we explain the value of hands on seminars and an internship under a physical therapist so you build confidence through practice, not hype. If you want a career path that rewards curiosity and competence, share this with a trainer who's stuck, and subscribe so you don't miss what we're building. Blood Flow Restrictions Exercises & Sauna Sizzles PodcastFive Primary Points of the Podcast* Health is more than the absence of disease—it is the body's ability to protect, adapt, and repair itself. The podcast highlights the emerging concept of the Hallmarks of Health, arguing that true health depends on maintaining strong biologic systems such as protective barriers, effective communication between organs, efficient recycling of damaged cells, healthy biologic rhythms, resilience to stress, and the capacity for repair and regeneration.* Small daily habits strengthen the body's natural defenses.Practical recommendations include protecting the skin, eating a fiber-rich diet or practicing intermittent fasting to support gut health, prioritizing exercise and sleep, and using controlled stressors such as sauna bathing and cold exposure to build resilience. These habits reinforce multiple hallmarks of health simultaneously.* Aging occurs in distinct “waves,” not as a steady decline.Research involving more than 4,300 people suggests that major biologic shifts occur around ages 33, 60, and 78, when molecular and structural changes accelerate. Rather than reacting after these transitions occur, the key is to prepare years in advance by investing consistently in physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being.* A personal “Vitality Flywheel” provides a framework for thriving throughout life.Dr. Mishra's flywheel consists of Faith, Family & Friends, Fitness, Focus, and Fun. Together, these five elements create momentum for sustained vitality, helping people withstand life's inevitable physical and emotional challenges while improving long-term performance and fulfillment.* Vitality is a skill that must be practiced intentionally every day.The central message is that vitality is not something we inherit or receive from others—it is earned through deliberate daily actions. By strengthening the body, training the mind, nurturing meaningful relationships, serving others, and maintaining a sense of purpose, individuals become more resilient and better equipped to flourish through every stage of life.Copyright VyVerse, LLC. What would happen if your daily walk became a practice for energy, balance, breath, and a clearer mind? In this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement, Steven Sashen speaks with Dr. Jacques MoraMarco, Co-Founder of the International Sun Tai Chi Association, and Dr. Yun Kim, Founder of Emperor's Wellness, who share the movement principles behind their book, Walking Your Way to Vitality. They introduce six walking practices that integrate natural movement with breathwork, mindful awareness, Tai Chi, Qigong, balance training, and traditional walking techniques. Together, they explain how to start with simple, accessible practices and build a regular walking routine that feels more focused, energizing, and enjoyable.  Key Takeaways: → Walking can become more intentional when you add breath, posture, awareness, and attention to your body's movement. → The widely cited 10,000-step target was a marketing concept, so a sustainable daily movement goal matters more than chasing a single universal number. → Mindful walking invites you to shift your attention away from past regrets and future worries and toward your breath, feet, and surroundings. → Mindfulness is not about forcing thoughts to disappear; it is about gently bringing attention back to the present when the mind wanders. → Tai Chi-inspired animal walks can offer accessible ways to improve balance, weight shifting, posture, and fall-prevention skills. Dr. Jacques MoraMarco, a doctor of traditional East Asian medicine, has been a licensed acupuncturist since 1977 and took the first acupuncture licensing examination in California. He apprenticed with See Han Kim, a renowned teacher of traditional East Asian medicine who trained in a monastic setting. He completed his postgraduate work at the École d'Acupuncture in Paris. From 1994 to 2004, he studied Sun tai chi with Sun Shurong in Beijing, China, and is a fourth-generation lineage holder of Sun tai chi. He is a cofounder of the International Sun Tai Chi Association. Dr. MoraMarco is dean emeritus at the former Emperor's College of Traditional East Asian   Dr. Yun Kim is the founder of Emperor's Wellness, a traditional East Asian medicine doctor, a fifth-generation Sun tai chi lineage student, and a mindful meditation practitioner for the past twenty years. In this solo episode, he gets personal about a stretch that looked, by every external measure, like one of the best runs he'd had in years. A major work transition, real momentum in business, and every morning from 7:30 to 9, writing the first draft of his first novel. A genuinely good season. And one that was quietly drawing down on something no scorecard ever caught. What you'll explore in this conversation:Why grading yourself against January goals in July is the least useful thing you can do at the midpoint of the year, and what to reach for insteadThe three Good Life Buckets framework (Vitality, Connection, Contribution) as a practical audit tool, not an abstract ideaTwo ways a bucket drains that most driven, successful people never see coming: the leak and the missing refillWhy the most dangerous bucket is often not the one that aches, but the one filling and draining at the same timeThree reckoning questions that surface something more honest than any goal list you've ever writtenWhy so many of us would rather stay tired and certain than rested and unsure, and what it actually costs usThis is Part 1 of a two-part series. You might be doing a lot of things right, eating well, moving your body, taking your supplements. And still feel like something's missing. Like you're following all the rules, but not quite getting the results you hoped for. This conversation might be exactly what you needed to hear.Dr. Carver sat down with Carlos Cintron, author, founder of Reversible Beauty and Wellness, and someone who has walked the talk on longevity from the inside out. Carlos built his entire philosophy on one core idea: aging is inevitable, but getting old is a choice. And in this episode, the two dig deep into what that actually means in practice. What You'll Learn in This Episode:Why spirituality and mindset come before nutrition and movement in any real longevity framework, and what happens to our health when we skip those foundational layers. How peptides work as cellular signalers, what they actually do in the body, and why working with a knowledgeable practitioner matters more than following social media trends. What genetic testing and mitochondrial function testing can reveal about your individual health blueprint, and why one-size-fits-all health advice often misses the mark. Why liposomal supplements outperform standard pill forms in bioavailability, and what to do when liposomal versions aren't available. How Carlos recovered from a traumatic brain injury using regenerative medicine and nutrition, and what that experience taught him about the body's capacity to heal.About Carlos Cintron:Carlos Cintron is an author, speaker, and the founder of Reversible Beauty and Wellness, a platform dedicated to helping people take control of their health through genetic testing, mitochondrial function testing, peptides, and personalized nutrition. His book, "Aging Is Inevitable, Getting Old Is a Choice," blends memoir with a practical five-element framework for building a life of vitality and purpose. Carlos is 63, looks decades younger, and is living proof of his own philosophy.Key Insights:The five elements Carlos outlines in his book, spirituality, mindset, movement, nutrition, and functional medicine, aren't random. There's an intentional order to them. He starts with spirituality because, without making peace with mortality, so much of what we do for our health becomes anxiety-driven rather than life-affirming. Mindset comes second because our thoughts genuinely shape our biology. That's not woo. There's solid research behind it, and both Dr. Carver and Carlos have seen it play out in their own bodies. On peptides, Carlos is clear: this is not a wild west, grab-whatever-looks-good-on-Instagram space. Peptides are amino acid chains that signal the body to repair and regenerate, and they can be genuinely powerful for cognitive health, hormones, gut repair, skin, weight, and mitochondrial function. But the key is personalization. Starting with a genetic test and a mitochondrial function test, the MiScreen, gives you an actual blueprint so you know which peptides your body may actually need, and which ones you can skip. One of the most practical takeaways from this episode is the supplement conversation. Most people are absorbing only 10 to 20 percent of what's in a standard pill-form vitamin. Liposomal delivery, where the nutrients are wrapped in a fatty encapsulation, can bring that absorption rate up to 70 to 80 percent. If liposomal isn't available, Dr. Carver shares her own approach using fulvic and humic acid, like Beam Minerals and Cellcore, to help nutrients cross the cell membrane more efficiently.Connect With Carlos Cintron:rvrsbl.comConnect With Dr. Carver on IG @drrachaelecarver Still dealing with bleeding gums, bad breath, or gum recession and not sure where to start? We're talking about swearing and physical performance, sparked by a 2024 mini review in Frontiers in Psychology that pulls together controlled studies on what happens when you repeat a swear word during a max-effort attempt versus a neutral word. Same task, same setup, different word, and the “explicit” option starts to look like a legitimate training variable. We walk through the headline results and why they matter for real-world coaching: wall sits held longer, more push-ups to failure, longer planks, stronger grip strength, and even a bump in Wingate test peak and average power. We also zoom out for perspective on how big those percentage changes are compared to typical training gains, and why replication makes this more than a one-off gimmick. Then we get practical and a little uncomfortable in the best way: why the mechanism is still unclear, why you shouldn't assume it transfers to long endurance efforts, and how to apply it ethically as a coach. We talk mirroring clients, setting expectations, respecting your environment in busy gyms, and the fine line between “authentic” and “unprofessional,” especially when one offended person can cost you a review, a referral, or a room full of trust. If you like evidence-based training with real-life coaching judgment, hit subscribe, share this with a trainer friend, and leave a quick rating and review.Want to become a SUCCESSFUL personal trainer? We walk through my blood work and why a “normal” total testosterone range can still leave you performing below your potential, especially when sleep, stress, body fat, and micronutrients are quietly dragging you down.We also talk about our partnership with Vitality Blueprint and what changes when you stop relying on the standard 10 to 20 lab markers and start looking at 80+ markers with clear recommendations and scientific references. That bigger picture helps you avoid the common trap of getting sold on TRT as the first option. TRT can be the right call for some people, but we make a strong case for optimizing naturally first, using a structured test, plan, retest approach and working alongside medical professionals when needed. You'll hear practical strategies for testosterone optimization and longevity: lifting weights without fearing cardio, eating enough protein and healthy fats, improving vitamin D, managing cortisol, reducing alcohol, avoiding estrogen-like chemicals where possible, and building a sleep routine that actually works, including getting your phone out of the bedroom. If you're a coach, we also get into how blood work and better systems can level up your service while keeping you in your lane.Subscribe, share this with a friend who's “fine” but tired, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway: what's the one habit you're changing first?Want to become a SUCCESSFUL personal trainer?
