This is the audio from a live streaming episode on June 3, 2026. Seguin Light Station, photo by Jeremy D’Entremont Seguin Island Light Station is about two and a half miles off of the mouth of the Kennebec River in Maine. The establishment of a light station on Seguin was approved by president George Washington in 1793, and the buildings were completed in 1796. The 53-foot stone tower that still stands was constructed in 1857 along with a duplex keepers' house. A new first-order Fresnel lens was installed, and that lens remains in operation today. The light was automated in 1985 and the keepers were removed. Concerned local citizens founded the Friends of Seguin Island Light Station in 1986. In February 1998, under the Maine Lights Program, ownership of the property was transferred to the group. There are two guests in the episode. Chris Hall was the registrar and curator of exhibits at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath and he's now the historian for FOSILS. Tip Koehler is a retired Naval architect with 41 years in naval combatant design, manufacturing, and testing on Bath built ships. and is the vice president of the Friends of Seguin Island Light Station.

On a fog-shrouded rock off the coast of Maine stands Seguin Island, a lonely lighthouse with a haunting reputation. Sailors say that on quiet nights, you can still hear a faint piano melody drifting over the Atlantic, an echo of a keeper's wife who played the same song until isolation drove her husband to madness. But the music isn't the island's only ghost… because on Seguin, the silence itself may be the thing that haunts you. On the night of January 28, 2006, 28-year-old Amber Lyn Smith was last seen at her home in the 1300 block of Aldama Street in Seguin, Texas. She was gone, but her purse, identification, and vehicle were still there. Her two young sons, just four years old and one month old, were asleep inside.Amber's disappearance launched one of the largest searches in Guadalupe County history. Local police, Texas Rangers, DPS Crime Lab personnel, K-9 units, volunteers, and later Texas EquuSearch combed fields and vacant properties in and around Seguin. Helicopters, drones, mounted teams, and sonar-equipped boats were used. No sign of Amber was found. On February 16, 2006, a Texas Department of Transportation worker discovered a badly decomposed body beneath a bridge at FM 725 and Grove Lane, roughly ten miles from Amber's home. Distinctive tattoos helped confirm the remains were hers. The autopsy listed the cause of death as undetermined due to decomposition, but investigators stated she had not arrived there on her own. In March 2006, a justice of the peace ruled her death a homicide. No one has ever been charged. Nearly two decades later, the case remains open.If you have any information about the murder of Amber Lyn Smith in Seguin, please contact Texas Crime Stoppers at (800) 252-8477.Get your GIRL SCOUT COOKIES here: https://digitalcookie.girlscouts.org/scout/alice241168You can support gone cold and listen to the show ad-free at https://patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFor Gone Cold merch, visit https://gonecold.dashery.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. Think Mardi Gras begins and ends on Bourbon Street? We hit the road to map the best celebrations across Texas—Galveston's towering floats and nighttime crowds, Beaumont's growing footprint with room for families, Texas City's daytime routes, Seguin's golf cart charm, and San Antonio's Fiesta Texas makeover that turns the whole park purple, green, and gold. We also spotlight the small-town sparkle of Jefferson and Alvin, then head waterside for Kema, where lit-up boats parade past the boardwalk and the vibe walks the line between festive and family-friendly.Road trips need the right ride, so we put real miles on the 2026 Mazda CX-50 Meridian Edition. Expect crisp styling, an interior that puts the driver in command, and standout handling that outperforms most compact SUVs. The 2.5-liter turbo brings usable power and confidence without drama, though the flat roof rack looks overbuilt and the infotainment system needs a rethink. Alloy has pointers.Credit unions also have seen a spike in in-branch fraud, says Alloy. That's surprising but also very worrying. Hear the details in the show.Fraud is not a fun topic, I know that. But it is a real, every day concern at just about every credit union in the US and knowledge - of what fraudsters are doing and the tools available to fight back - is indeed power for a credit union.Understand, too, last year's fraud trends aren't this year's. It's a constant battle where the criminals are always updating their weapons. Credit unions have to do likewise. How? What? Listen up.Like what you are hearing? On April 5, 1985, 29-year-old Kathleen “Kathy” Ranft finished her shift at Lippe Tire Center in Seguin, Texas, and headed into the weekend. She was in the middle of a separation, moving into a new apartment, and trying to build a fresh start for herself and her three sons. That night, Kathy was supposed to meet friends at the Country Cabaret, a small nightclub off FM 467. She never made it.The next morning, her 1980 Chevy Citation was found in the club's parking lot. Inside were two cigarette butts and a child's wristwatch. Back at her apartment, her purse and makeup sat untouched, but her wallet and keys were gone. Kathy was never seen again. In the weeks that followed, the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office chased leads that led nowhere. Investigators even called in a Dallas psychic, who led deputies and reporters to dig the clay pits of Acme Brick, where Kathy's estranged husband worked. The spectacle drew headlines but uncovered nothing.Decades later, Kathy's disappearance remains Guadalupe County's most haunting cold case. With no suspects, little evidence, and only painful silence, her family has spent nearly forty years waiting for answers. If you have any information about the disappearance of Kathleen Ranft, please contact the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office at (830) 379-1224 or Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers at (877) 403-TIPS.Sources: The Seguin Gazette-Enterprise, The Wichita Falls Times, The New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung, The San Antonio Express-News, KTSX.com, FoxSanAntonio.com, SeguinToday.comYou can support gone cold and listen to the show ad-free at https://patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFor Gone Cold merch, visit https://gonecold.dashery.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X.
