Today's guest is Hassan al-Kontar, an absolute gem of a person who found himself in one of the most unique and unusual positions imaginable: living in an airport for seven months. As a Syrian refugee, Hassan had been working in the United Arab Emirates, when civil war broke out in Syria. Refusing to return there to join the Syrian military (knowing he might be arrested upon arrival), he stayed abroad, and Hassan's passport renewal was later denied, leaving him stranded in Kuala Lumpar International Airport in Malaysia. Hassan Al Kontar - Man at the Airport: How Social Media Saved My Life (One Syrian's Story)... with TRE´s Dave Hodgson
Hassan Al Kontar was living in Dubai when civil war broke out in his home country of Syria. Unwilling to fight his own people and unable to stay in the United Arab Emirates, he eventually found himself trapped in a Malaysian airport, where he stayed for more than seven months. He survived on the kindness of strangers. And using the power of social media, he attracted attention and support and eventually found refuge in Canada. In his new book, and in this conversation, Al Kontar shares the lessons of his journey: how giving up is a result, not an option; the difference between survivors and fighters; why we don't own our destiny; how hope is the main motivation in life; how we can manufacture our own luck; and why who you become as you work towards your dream is more important than the dream itself. In this episode, Dima shares some of what it is like to balance work, life, and relationships. How being a model can place a strain on a relationship if the other partner is not mature enough to handle what comes with the job. We give some tips on how to rekindle a relationship through some very simple techniques. Also discussed is how physical beauty or being nice can affect a relationship in ways that people do not expect. Another topic that Dima shares about modeling is feeling relaxed in front of the camera. How building trust between her and the photographer helps get the photos needed for the product or designer. This same trust also crosses into everyday relationships. Building on that topic is helping your relationship maintain it's spark by taking care of yourself and trying to be your best for your partner by attempting to remain attractive to them. We wrap part two of the discussion with Dima on how small changes can boost someone's self-confidence. While much has been written about the "refugee crisis" coming to Western shores, we rarely hear about the long standing crises across the Global South, where 85% of the world's forcibly displaced people's have been forced to seek refuge. Hashed had to flee Yemen after his father was killed, and what followed was an odyssey that has taken him from Djibouti, to India, to Malaysia, where his struggle is far from over. Hassan is from Syria, and he also wound up in Malaysia, after his work visa in the UAE expired and the Emirati government threatened to deport him back to Syria. Hassan spent 7 months trapped in the airport in Kuala Lumpur and, after becoming the subject of international headlines, private Canadian citizens stepped forward to help him find asylum in Canada. These are their stories, but they are not unique, and you can help.
In this episode, CJ speaks with Hassan al-Kontar, a Syrian refugee who has been stranded inside Kuala Lumpur’s international airport for more than 80 days. He refuses to return to Syria because he doesn’t want to be forced into fighting for what he described as Assad’s “murderous machine,” while countries he seeks safe passage are refusing him entry because of his Syrian passport.
