If you're tired of fear-based marketing and just want the real, science-backed truth about what's actually in your toothpaste, this episode is for you. We're cutting through the noise around nano hydroxyapatite, debunking the scariest claims, and getting honest about what works, what doesn't, and why your dental health is more personal than anyone's hot take. I'm sharing the latest research, my own journey from skeptic to supporter, and real-life stories that don't make it into the marketing reels. In this episode, we're chatting about:- The truth behind “toxic” nano hydroxyapatite claims and what the science actually says- How European and Japanese regulators have approached nano hydroxyapatite safety- Why some people thrive on natural toothpaste—and why others end up with more cavities- The practical realities of switching your family to non-fluoride options (and what to do if it's not working)- How to tune out the judgment and make the best choice for your own mouth (and your kids')You'll also hear why I think Zebra's toothpaste is great, just not for the reasons their marketing team wants you to believe. Plus, I'll break down the most common myths about ingredients like glycerin and fluoride, and share my no-shame approach to finding what actually works for you.If you've ever felt overwhelmed by conflicting advice, or just want to brush your teeth without second-guessing every ingredient, this episode will give you the clarity (and peace of mind) you need.Mentioned in this episode:ToothpillowHead over to www.toothpillow.com and use code 'WENDY' at checkout for a FREE virtual assessment!
Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 10-23-2025: Dr. Dawn opens with a passionate plea about E-bike safety after observing riders ignoring stop signs and wearing inadequate helmets in Santa Cruz. She explains the physics of collisions, noting that force equals mass times acceleration, and a car hitting an E-bike rider at 20 mph delivers impact equivalent to falling from a two-story building. She emphasizes that 97% of bike fatalities in New York involved helmetless riders, and brain injuries result from the brain striking the skull twice during impact - once on the impact side and again on the opposite side during deceleration. She urges drivers to honk at helmetless riders and calls for stricter helmet law enforcement. An emailer asks about hydroxyapatite in toothpaste. Dr. Dawn traces its origins to NASA research in the 1960s by Dr. Bernard Rubin studying crystal growth for preventing bone and tooth mineral loss in astronauts. Japanese company Sangi acquired the patent and created the first hydroxyapatite toothpaste by 1980, receiving official anti-cavity recognition in 1993. Studies show it matches fluoride's cavity prevention effectiveness by filling microscopic cracks where bacteria take root. It also relieves temperature sensitivity by sealing micro-fractures in enamel that expose the dentin layer, making it especially helpful for people who clench their jaws. Researchers from UC Berkeley and the Allen Institute used electrodes and lasers to study how mouse brains process optical illusions like the Kanizsa triangle. They discovered specialized IC encoder neurons in the visual cortex that fill in missing information, creating complete shapes from partial cues. When these pattern-completing circuits activate inappropriately, they may trigger hallucinations in conditions like schizophrenia. Dr. Dawn explains that illusions occur when the brain perceives something different from actual visual input, while hallucinations create perceptions with no external stimulus. She discusses frontotemporal dementia where visual hallucinations result from protein deposits in the occipital cortex, and notes that a 2021 British Journal of Psychiatry study found hallucination rates varying from 7% in young people to 3% in those over 70. An emailer describes unbearable chronic lumbar pain with degenerative disc disease shown on MRI. Dr. Dawn emphasizes that MRI findings don't necessarily correlate with pain levels, citing shopping mall studies showing equal degenerative changes in people with and without back pain. She stresses checking for sciatica symptoms including leg pain below the knee, sensory differences between sides, calf size asymmetry, and ability to walk on tiptoes and heels. Without these red flags, the degenerative disease likely isn't causing the pain. She warns against unnecessary surgery citing frequent "failed back" syndrome when surgery for a disk image doesn't "fix" the pain. She recommends water jogging with a ski vest, McKenzie exercises, abdominal strengthening, ergonomics, removing wallets from back pockets, and alternating heat and ice therapy. She discusses mindfulness meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy for pain management. A caller references Daniel Levitin's book "Your Brain on Music," discussing research using functional MRIs showing distinct brain activation patterns in musicians versus non-musicians due to integrated auditory, visual, and kinesthetic training. Dr. Dawn describes how infant brains develop from three to six layers with increasingly complex synaptic connections resembling circuit boards. She highlights a blindfold study where college students' visual cortices began responding to sound within two weeks as the auditory cortex expanded. She shares her husband's remarkable recovery demonstrating adult brain plasticity through intensive rehabilitation. Learning new musical instruments helps dementia patients by activating multiple brain regions simultaneously and improving standard cognitive test performance. A caller describes an eight-day chest cold with thick white phlegm. Dr. Dawn recommends guaifenesin as a mucus-thinning expectorant to prevent bacterial growth in respiratory secretions that serve as "bacteria chow." She emphasizes the importance of current flu, COVID, and RSV vaccinations. Secondary bacterial infections develop when bacteria colonize viral-induced mucus in the lungs and invade tissues. She advises aggressive hydration and chicken soup, which research shows helps clear mucus. Another caller provides additional information about Daniel Levitin as a musicologist, neurologist, and musician who runs the Music Perception, Cognition and Expertise laboratory at McGill University.
The similarity between a gel diffusion system to create crystals for semiconductors and the way crystals form in teeth and bones led to the development of a spinoff toothpaste that restores teeth.

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITEver wondered what drives someone to pay thousands of dollars to test their partner's loyalty? We dive deep into the surprising world of professional "honey traps" – where attractive influencers charge up to $5,000 to tempt unsuspecting boyfriends online. As one such entrepreneur puts it: "I'm not out here ruining relationships, I'm just giving women the receipts." But the real question remains: if you're already suspicious enough to hire someone, don't you already know the answer? The conversation takes an unexpected turn as we explore scientific innovation happening in dental care – researchers at King's College London have discovered that keratin, a protein found in human hair, could replace fluoride in toothpaste. This breakthrough uses the body's own materials to create a protective coating that mimics natural enamel. While brushing your teeth with a hair-derived product might sound strange, it could be on shelves within two years. We also tackle a frustrating social media phenomenon: why do influential accounts amplify hateful comments by reposting them? When public figures with large followings share screenshots of abusive messages, they're inadvertently giving trolls exactly what they want – attention and a bigger platform. Sometimes the old advice rings true: simply ignoring negativity might be more effective than highlighting it. These modern dilemmas reflect our evolving digital landscape where relationship boundaries, scientific advances, and social media ethics constantly intersect. Her innovative company is tackling the global issue of plastic waste with its unique toothpaste tablets, offering a game-changing alternative to traditional toothpaste packaged in plastic tubes.Kaylaan's toothpaste tablets are designed for simplicity and sustainability. “All you do is crunch it. Your saliva does the magic, and you just brush your teeth how you normally would,” Deepti explained. These tablets, made with clean ingredients, generate zero waste and do not require water for activation. They are an eco-friendly solution for environmentally conscious consumers. The journey to bring this product to market has been filled with challenges. Kaylaan is the first company in the United States to manufacture toothpaste tablets with fluoride, a key component for oral health. “We are the only company in the U.S. that manufactures toothpaste tablets with fluoride,” Deepti shared. Achieving this milestone involved navigating a complex FDA approval process, adopting good manufacturing practices (GMP), and undergoing rigorous testing.Deepti highlighted the financial hurdles her company has faced, particularly the annual FDA fees required for over-the-counter products with fluoride. “This year, we got a bill for $25,000 in FDA fees, and we know it will keep increasing. But we didn't stop,” she said, underscoring her determination to succeed.Kaylaan's product lineup includes several flavors tailored to different preferences, from mint to kid-friendly strawberry and watermelon, as well as neem, a nod to Deepti's Himalayan roots. The company recently expanded its offerings with mouthwash tablets, further advancing its mission to eliminate plastic waste. To scale its operations sustainably, Kaylaan is currently raising funds through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on Honeycomb Credit. Deepti views this community-driven approach as a way to grow without compromising the company's values. “We wanted to give back to our community and use the funds wisely to grow consistently,” she explained.Kaylaan is more than just a business—it represents a movement to rethink oral care and reduce the environmental footprint of daily routines. Deepti's vision and perseverance serve as an inspiring example of how innovative thinking can create impactful change.tl;dr:Kaylaan founder Deepti Brambl explains how plastic-free toothpaste tablets tackle waste and promote sustainability.Deepti shares challenges of FDA compliance and GMP certification as a small, self-funded startup.Kaylaan's innovative products include fluoride and non-fluoride options in five unique flavors.Deepti discusses raising capital via a regulated crowdfunding campaign to scale operations sustainably.Persistence and embracing failure are key to Deepti's success as a purpose-driven entrepreneur. How to Develop Persistence As a SuperpowerDeepti Brambl's superpower is persistence—a relentless determination to overcome challenges and achieve her goals. As she explained, “If I'm laser-focused and want to achieve something, that is something I would say is my superpower.” Deepti highlighted the role of failure in her journey, noting, “The superpower is failing a lot because that's where the real growth happens.” Her ability to embrace failure and keep moving forward has been key to her success as an entrepreneur.Illustrative Story:When Kaylaan faced an FDA audit, Deepti discovered the company wasn't fully compliant and received a 485 letter. This setback led Amazon to delist their products, forcing Kaylaan to pause operations temporarily. Instead of giving up, Deepti used the audit as a learning opportunity, hiring consultants and implementing rigorous compliance processes. The experience not only ensured full FDA compliance but also set Kaylaan on a path for long-term success.Tips for Developing Persistence:Embrace failure as an opportunity to learn and grow.Allow yourself time to process setbacks before tackling problems with a fresh perspective.Seek help and guidance from others when faced with challenges.Focus on long-term goals rather than immediate obstacles.Adopt the mindset that every problem has a solution.By following Deepti's example and advice, you can make persistence a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Choosing the right toothpaste can be a bit of a challenge, either because there's a plethora of options or because you might have specific requirements. It's not always clear what these products contain, whether it's advisable to steer clear of certain toothpaste, or if the organic versions are just as effective. The main goal is to tackle dental plaque before it turns into tartar, preventing issues like cavities, bad breath, and bacterial infections. According to tooth-doctor.com, a crucial factor for toothpaste effectiveness is the fluoride content. This trace element strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities, with the recommended concentration varying based on age and individual cavity risk. The NHS suggests that “toothpastes containing 1,350 to 1,500 parts per million fluoride are the most effective” for adults and children over 7. What's in toothpaste? So, what should one go for? This powerful conversation with Dr. Miles Madison reveals the authentic journey of a periodontist who embraced innovation when it was considered "fringe" and transformed his practice through genuine connection and continuous learning. Dr. Madison's story embodies the podcast's core themes of authentic leadership, professional growth, and finding your unique voice in dentistry. From starting college at 16 to becoming a social media influencer with millions of views, Dr. Madison demonstrates how embracing your authentic self—even when it means pivoting based on honest feedback from your daughter—can lead to unprecedented success. His evolution from placing 15 implants during residency (when implants were looked down upon) to performing life-changing same-day transformations illustrates the profession's incredible journey. Most importantly, Dr. Madison's philosophy of "know yourself first" and molding your profession to your personality rather than conforming to industry expectations offers wisdom for practitioners at any stage. His commitment to continuous learning, community connection, and vulnerable authenticity provides a roadmap for sustainable success that honors both clinical excellence and personal fulfillment.
Story at-a-glance Independent testing of 51 popular toothpaste brands revealed 90% contained lead, 65% arsenic, 47% mercury, and 35% cadmium. Only six toothpastes tested clean Heavy metals enter toothpaste through contaminated raw materials like hydroxyapatite, calcium carbonate, and bentonite clay used in manufacturing Lead and cadmium disrupt cellular functions, causing kidney damage, osteoporosis, anemia, and various other health complications Despite evidence, toothpaste companies refuse to remove heavy metals. Some even use legal means to intimidate whistleblowers Switching to a homemade toothpaste made from coconut oil, baking soda, and essential oils offers safer protection compared to mass-produced alternatives

My guest is Dr. Staci Whitman, DMD, a board-certified functional dentist for kids and adults. We discuss the critical importance of oral care and the oral microbiome for brain and bodily health. We examine the negative effects of common oral care product ingredients such as alcohol, astringents, and bleaches. We also explore the history and real impact of fluoridated drinking water on oral, bone, and systemic health. Then we discuss healthy, lesser-known solutions for bad breath, canker sores, cavities, and teeth whitening. We cover how teeth can be made to repair their own cavities and the connection between oral health and cardiovascular health, male and female fertility, dementia, and cancer. This episode goes far beyond the best approaches to brushing and flossing and will be a valuable resource for anyone seeking to improve their oral health and appearance at any age.
