Daily news media, whether on television or social media, is often troubling and unsettling, particularly because the media seems to focus excessively on the tragic and even dehumanizing stories of conflict, violence, or war. Why not take a moment to consider some good news? Life is a gift. Every human person is a masterpiece of God's creative love, endowed—as our Declaration of Independence states, with "certain inalienable rights" that include "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". May we commit ourselves to public witness to these truths, respecting the gift of our own life and the lives of others. In the eyes of God, all possess an infinite dignity as Temples of the Holy Spirit. And may we come together to ensure the sanctity of life is defended, protected, and celebrated—always.

Episode summaryAfter losing her home, savings, and a 34-year marriage, pharmacist and integrative medicine leader Dr. Lisa Nezneski chose a different path: put herself first, grieve fully, and cultivate joy deliberately. In this candid conversation, we trace the arc from rupture to renewal—restorative yoga twice a week, twice-daily meditation, beach “walking meditations,” and the seven mindful questions that helped her rewire patterns. We also talk relationships after loss, somatic signs of awe, and how to make the “next right step” when you don't know what's next. This is a clear-eyed look at resilience, seen through yoga's lens of abhyāsa (steadfast practice) and vairāgya (non-attachment): effort rooted in discernment, without clinging to outcomes.Dr. Lisa Nezneski — Certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher; board-certified pharmacotherapist; Reiki Master; poet and author of Grounded in Chaos: Leaning into Adversity, Learning Joy (2020; updated edition forthcoming). Former clinical pharmacist and hospital administrator; taught at Duquesne University; past Chief Clinical Officer at Schatz Clinical Services; founder of Healthy Mindful Self. Website: lisanezneski.comKey takeawaysChoose self-priority without apology. Midlife caretakers often land last on their own list; reclaiming agency is the hinge of recovery.Practice over prediction. Twice-daily meditation + consistent restorative yoga created the conditions for healing—abhyāsa in action.Non-attachment reduces reactivity. “This is this day.” Meet what is, breathe three times, then respond—classic vairāgya.Somatic joy is real data. Tingling, goosebumps, softening—felt sense can signal alignment more reliably than analysis. The “next right step” is enough. Use simple inner tests (Lisa's “speedometer” method) and adjust course—no catastrophizing.Relational healing is possible. Mutuality, gratitude, and playfulness can re-pattern partnership after grief.Hands calm the nervous system. Repetitive handcrafts (e.g., finger-crochet) function like mudrā/nyāsa—bottom-up regulation.ResourcesDr. Lisa Nezneski — lisanezneski.comBook — Grounded in Chaos: Leaning into Adversity, Learning Joy (1st ed., 2020; updated edition forthcoming)Listener reflection (journal prompts)Where in my week do I practice abhyāsa without clinging to a result? What does my body feel like when a choice is a genuine “yes”?What micro-ritual will I use as my three-breath reset cue?Call to actionIf this episode helped you locate a little joy inside the storm, share it with one person who needs a steady hand. It's the end of the year and you're thinking about what's next. But here's what most people get wrong about goals. I'm not talking about those 10-year vision things or tiny incremental goals. I'm talking about something so big it changes how you live right now. A goal that's actually worth your time has to grab your attention and redirect your entire day. And you don't build to it over months or years. You start living it today. Featured Story I just got off my 7 a.m. Wednesday morning call with my inner circle. Two years ago, I would've hated that idea. But this group? They're doing the work. We spent the whole call talking about what it means to set a goal that's actually big enough to matter. The holiday chaos is happening. We're all wrapping up the year, buying presents, eating too much, dealing with everything. But underneath all that noise, we're thinking about next year. And the question isn't just "what do I want?" It's "what am I willing to live right now?" Important Points Your big-ass goal isn't about your career or your health or your relationships separately—it's the whole picture of the life you want to live, and everything else has to support that vision. If your goal doesn't grab your attention and run with it, it's not big enough, because a real goal directs everything you do instead of waiting for leftover minutes at the end of your day. You don't build to your goal over time—you start living it today by doing only the actions that align with who you're trying to become, even if it's not perfect yet. Memorable Quotes "A goal so big that you see yourself living it today, even though it's not exactly what you want it to be, but you know you're on your way because you're doing it every day anyway." "I know you don't know, but if you did, what would it be? In that moment, hope and inspiration arrive. And that feeling arrives." "You might not know what to call it, you might not know exactly what it looks like. You don't even know how to spell it, man. You know what it feels like." Scott's Three-Step Approach Define your big-ass goal as the complete picture of the life you want—not divided into categories, but as one integrated vision that includes your career, relationships, health, and impact on the world. Make your goal big enough that it demands your attention every single day and start living it immediately instead of building a plan to get there eventually. Simplify everything else in your life by clearing out the clutter and complications that keep you from living in your goal right now. Feel Better in Five: Small Changes That Make a Big DifferenceIn this episode, we're revisiting the powerful teachings from Feel Better in Five by Dr. Rangan Chatterjee. It's a book that has resonated deeply because of its practical, compassionate approach to health. Instead of aiming for massive lifestyle overhauls, Chatterjee introduces a system of five-minute “health snacks”—simple, actionable steps that make caring for your mind, body, and heart accessible to everyone. The Health Snack PhilosophyWe break down the core concept of health snacks—tiny five-minute actions designed to reduce stress, improve focus, and boost energy. These aren't big changes, but they're consistent, achievable steps that can truly shift your well-being over time.Three Pillars of Well-Being: Mind, Body, HeartThis episode explores how wellness isn't just about physical fitness. We look at how small practices—like deep breathing, stretching, or emotional check-ins—can rejuvenate not just the body, but also your mental clarity and emotional resilience.Health Recipes and CustomizationDr. Chatterjee's idea of “recipes” that combine mind, body, and heart actions is a game-changer. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, low energy, or back pain, pairing specific actions together creates powerful results. And you're encouraged to create your own.Practical Applications in Daily LifeFrom watching calming nature videos to going for quick walks, we talk about real-life examples of how these tiny practices can become sustainable habits. The point isn't to be perfect—it's to be present and intentional.Takeaways:This episode is a reminder that taking care of yourself doesn't require a gym membership or a full-day retreat. It can start with five mindful minutes. By embracing small actions and dropping perfectionism, you build momentum and confidence in your ability to support your health. You'll come away with ideas for crafting your own personal “health snack” routine, recognizing patterns in your day when a quick mental, physical, or emotional reset can make a real difference. On today's show, we're chatting with Lureena Thompson, a comedian, actor and artist in Los Angeles, who opened the Cheerio Collective in Highland Park this spring. It's a vintage store by day – utilizing a curated “rent-a-rack” collective concept, and a live event space by night – and Lureena self-admits she's doing SO MUCH, and that you should stop by to tell her in-person to stop and drink some water. This is a really honest and authentic chat about what it takes to bring a store and event venue to life. A major highlight of the Cheerio Collective is a breathtaking 1,200 square foot mosaic floor that Lureena designed and installed herself utilizing remnant offcuts of natural stones such as marble, granite, quartz and travertine. Creating it was a labor of love, that underscored Lureena's commitment to using sustainable practices and recycled materials in her business. The creation of the mosaic floor created a significant buzz, both within the Highland Park neighborhood, and online. The documentation of the entire renovation captivated a wide audience and amassed millions of social media views that created a huge anticipation for Cheerio to open. I'll let Lureena tell you the rest! – let's dive right in! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [4:19] Lureena has thrifted her whole life, and has noticed how much more popular secondhand has become in recent years. [8:39] How Lureena got into selling vintage. [10:43] Things really got started when they found the studio space that would become the Cheerio Collective. [14:19] First, she took on a major renovation and designed and installed a 1,200 square foot mosaic floor utilizing remnant offcuts of natural stones. [18:11] Sharing the 3-month renovation journey on social media. Today is my ten-year sobriety birthday. Ten years without a drink. Ten years of showing up for life instead of running from it. In this episode I share honestly about how I first got sober in my 20s in AA in London, how I drifted away, and how one ordinary morning at the school gates changed everything. The woman I bumped into that day — someone I'd known from those early meetings — became my sponsor. Over coffee after the school run we talked recovery, motherhood, and how to get through just one more day. Those chats anchored me. Since then, I've stayed sober through divorce, burnout, homelessness, heartbreak, and the messy, beautiful realities of parenting and relationships. Sobriety has given me the chance to be a present mother, not a perfect one. It's also given me the freedom to date without clinging, without losing myself. I talk about moving from digital marketing to nursing, from chaos to calm, from living to impress to living in truth. Most of all, I talk about joy — the kind that isn't dependent on anyone or anything outside of me. This isn't a how-to or a polished “ten steps to success” story. It's just me, ten years sober, reflecting on what I've learned, what I've survived, and why I still only ever take it one day at a time.

Are you homeschooling a neurodivergent child, or just feeling like the “typical” homeschool advice doesn't fit your real life? This episode is for all the mamas who secretly (or not-so-secretly) wish for a blueprint, but end up building a rollercoaster every single day.Today, I'm joined by Amie, a veteran mom of one, homeschooling her neurodivergent son, and living proof that “just one kid” does NOT mean it's always a walk in the park! (Try keeping up with a high-speed Wikipedia page who only wants to talk about trains and Japanese sailing. It's an Olympic sport.)Amie opens up about her journey: from the failed attempt at “Best School in the System” to finding a unique family rhythm at home, letting go of expectations, and embracing a blend of Montessori, Charlotte Mason, and good old, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants adaptability. We dive into what school looks like for a wildly curious, deeply-focused teen and how Wonder Studies (yes, still with her high schooler!) has become a lifeline for jumpstarting curiosity and keeping herself sane.Wonder how to juggle rabbit trails, box-checking, and your own perfectionist guilt? Amie and I get real about dropping the Pinterest boards and finding peace in the “messy middle.” If your homeschool feels all over the place. Spoiler: you're in good company. What you'll learn:Why letting go of “school should look like school” is the first step to real joyExactly how Amie balances deep-dive interests with actually “doing the school things”Why unit studies + living books + rabbit holes are magic for neurodivergent and neurotypical kids alikeTips for Morning Time with a single, high-intensity learner (and why baskets save everyone's sanity!)How Wonder Studies gives teens independence and mamas instant reliefLetting go of perfectionism, surviving “no core subjects this week,” and still raising an amazing kidWhy curiosity and joy matter just as much, if not more, than checking the boxesResources mentioned in this episode:Wonder Studies Annual AccessTeens on Track resources:Morning Time PlansFor full show notes and a transcript of today's episode, head to pambarnhill.com/hsbt44Mentioned in this episode:Wonder Studies Annual Access Now OpenDoors close August 15. In a special Father's Day message, Pastor David Wray encourages us on how we can walk through the different phases of our life to have the greatest impact on the next generation.
Kara Seymour was deeply entrenched in the New Age movement, she was a Kundalini yogi, and was thoroughly convinced that Christians were judgmental, boring, and brainwashed. So she was as surprised as anyone when she met a group of Christian women who became her new best friends. I can't wait for you to hear her amazing story of transformation, the judgment she felt outside and inside the Church, and how her relationship with Jesus has changed her life. We're kicking off our Judgy Girl series, where we're looking at stories of judgment and mercy from the Bible and how to live like it's true that our God is a merciful Judge. I'm weaving in some thoughts about several Bible stories of mercy into my conversation with Kara.
