On this day, 16 May 1967, the All Circles Struggle Committee (ACSC) was established in Hong Kong in the wake of violent police repression of a strike of plastic flower factory workers. On May 6, British colonial police violently beat picketing workers and bystanders, causing mass outrage. Protests against and clashes with police began breaking out across the city. After the ACSC was set up to coordinate a movement against colonialism, 126 struggle committees had been formed within the next two days to share experiences and plan action. A week later, wildcat strikes began to break out, with widespread rioting. In June, a general strike was called, which eventually faltered although strikes in some industries continued until late July. As the strike collapsed, many protesters began resorting to bomb attacks – both real and fake – targeting British authorities to cause chaos and disrupt business as usual. The "Hong Kong riots," as they became known, lasted until December before they were called off after secret talks between British authorities and the Communist Party of China. The CPC were nominally opposed to British colonialism, but in reality the Chinese economy benefited from having access to international markets through British Hong Kong and so they eventually decided not to push for British withdrawal. While the protests ended, in their wake British authorities implemented numerous reforms which significantly improved the lives of working class Hong Kongers. These included UK-style social benefits for the unemployed, the disabled and the elderly, construction of new hospitals and homes, abolition of some sexist laws, and rampant police corruption was largely eradicated. Tee Time For Pittsburgh 05/06/26 The Pittsburgh Penguins' 2025-26 campaign has come to an end. Eliminated in an overtime, Game 6 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, the Pens overachieved and bowed out early. No harm, no foul. We all got extra hockey, the organization generated some playoff revenue from tickets, concessions, and merch, and after a slow start, we were all treated to some thrilling hockey in Games three through six. Jeff and Jordan recap the season that was, discussing - among other things - Evgeni Malkin's future with the Pittsburgh Penguins. In the final part of our detailed conversation with Greg Taylor, he reflects on the last Pink Floyd concerts he attended during the post-Barrett years, spanning 1969 to 1971. From the early days of the band's pioneering surround sound system at The Dome in Brighton in 1969, Greg takes us through a vivid period of cultural change and personal creative growth. As an emerging avant-garde artist, Greg became increasingly driven to document what he was witnessing, recording live performances, taking photographs, and even capturing footage of Hyde Park 1970 on Super 8 film. Greg's resourcefulness placed him closer to the action than most. Whether blending in with a makeshift press pass or positioning recording equipment on stage, Greg experienced key moments in Pink Floyd's evolution with rare immediacy. One standout memory comes from a bold decision to head backstage during an interval, leading to an unexpected encounter when Richard Wright answered the dressing room door. This concluding episode offers a fascinating, first-hand perspective on a transitional era for Pink Floyd, as they moved through experimentation towards the defining successes that would follow. Game Six: Balboa Penguins Force Philly Return 04/29/26 No one saw any of this coming, so each shift we behold - with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang together in the Stanley Cup Playoffs - is a gift to Penguins fans around the world. And yet we find ourselves riveted by the drama, as number eighty-seven and his scrappy, resilient team pushes through the reedy swamp of the most unlikely of comebacks. The Flyers, after jumping out to a three games to none lead, have stumbled while the Pens have surged. Former Calder Cup MVP and Penguins net minder Arturs Silovs stood tall in games four and five, and heretofore absent elements to the Penguins' postseason game: Depth scoring, Superstars getting going, just to name a couple, have arrived at either just the right moment …or a little bit too late. Either way, we're being treated to a classic. A Keystone State Battle to write home about. Tonight the Penguins visit Philadelphia for what will either be their storybook season's final tilt or, as some die-hard Penguins fans assert and hope: one more salvo in the name of a reverse sweep. Make no mistake: The Flyers faithful are sweating this game. Enjoy the podcast - Jeff and Jordan are back with you for some spirited Penguins hockey talk. Also, special thanks to Hunter and Jacob, a couple of newly minted hockey fans who came in through the ‘Heated Rivalry' side-entrance. Jeff met them at a local coffee shop, spotting them in some crisp, new Rakell / Crosby jerseys and simply had to ask them for a quick chat. “X” Men 04/12/26 The Pittsburgh Penguins are going back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs!! Needless to say, Jordan and Jeff are beside themselves with unadulterated joy, personified by the sign-offs you'll hear at the conclusion of today's episode. Sidney, Kris, Evgeni, Erik, Bryan, and Ben all sat and rested their weary bones for yesterday's 6-3 loss to Ovechkin and the visiting Washington Capitals, but the big boys will PLAY today as the Caps make their final regular season home-ice appearance. Florida Men 04/02/26 Nothing says ice hockey like FLORIDA, as for the past two NHL seasons no hockey club has been more successful than the FLORIDA Panthers. And if it's Florida hockey yinz want, then you're in luck - the Penguins tonight kick off a three-game stint versus the Lightning and Panthers. Tonight's game versus the Bolts will be played in Tampa, with the Cats curling up in Pittsburgh for a back-to-back residency at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday and Sunday. The Tampa team looks pretty darned dangerous and it's never wise to count out a reigning Stanley Cup champ, regardless of (the Panthers' mounting) ongoing injuries. Lords Of The Shootout 03/27/26 As we've been saying for YEARS, the Pittsburgh Penguins are the Lords Of The Shootout, striking fear into the hearts of any opposing team's goaltender.. etc, etc. We kid, we kid. Back-to-back shootout victories for your Pittsburgh Penguins are of course unheard of and downright unexpected - but the Steel City's flagship hockey club managed the feat nonetheless, besting ace goaler, Linus Ullmark for a massive 2-point party in the capital of Canada. As of today's posting (Fri March 27, 2026) the Penguins are in sole possession of 2nd place in the Metropolitan division. The podcast you're listening to was recorded the day before said game, on the heels of two epic home losses to the NHL's top teams, Carolina and Colorado. In Part 2 of our in-depth conversation with Greg Taylor, we turn to Pink Floyd's concerts in 1968, as Greg recalls a series of extraordinary performances he witnessed during that transitionary year.At the centre of the episode is Greg's vivid recollection of the 19 January 1968 concert at Lewes Town Hall, a rare performance featuring the short-lived five-man Pink Floyd line-up with Syd Barrett and David Gilmour both on stage. Greg remembers the evening in remarkable detail, from the character of the hall itself and the local promoter who organised the event, to the backstage atmosphere and the stories that have survived from that night. Most striking of all is Greg's memory of David Gilmour positioned slightly behind Syd Barrett on stage, ready to step forward if Syd stopped playing. It is a fascinating glimpse of Pink Floyd at a fragile moment, still carrying Syd's creative, painterly vision while beginning to adapt to the possibility of continuing without it.The conversation then moves through recollections of several other memorable performances from 1968, including the Falmer House Courtyard show at the University of Sussex in May, the Midsummer High weekend concert in June at Hyde Park, (where Greg captured remarkable photographs of the band at close range), and Middle Earth at the Roundhouse in October.Greg also talks about taping some of the Floyd's BBC sessions, photographing concerts as a teenager, and the atmosphere of the British underground music scene in the late 1960s.If you are interested in early Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, psychedelic London, and the live music culture of the late 1960s, Greg's memories offer a rare, intimate, first-hand window into that world.Subscribe for more episodes, and we would love to hear your own recollections or questions in the comments. Part 3 on Greg's journey through 1969 - 1971 premieres next month, so don't miss it!

Olympic Hangover 02/23/26 Sidney Crosby played well in the Milan Cortina Olympic prelims, then sustained a serious lower body injury in Team Canada's quarterfinal game against Czechia. Team USA ultimately won gold in dramatic OT fashion, with NJD's Jack Hughes netting the deciding tally. The Penguins are back in action on home ice, this Thursday against Hughes's NHL squad, followed by a Saturday visit to MSG and the reigning gold medal-winning HC, former PIT bench boss Mike Sullivan. Send us a textIn the summer of 1967, Detroit was already burning when a far quieter tragedy unfolded behind the doors of the Algiers Motel. As the city reeled from six days of unrest, three young Black men—Carl Cooper, Auburey Pollard, and Fred Temple—were detained, terrorized, and killed during a police raid that would later become one of the most disturbing chapters of the Detroit Uprising. In this milestone 100th episode of Curator135, we explore what led Detroit to the brink, how the uprising began, and what happened inside the Algiers Motel that night. We examine survivor testimony, the failed prosecutions that followed, and how the justice system ultimately left families without answers. But this episode is also about what came after. About a city shaped by fire, injustice, and loss—and one that refused to disappear. From population collapse and decades of disinvestment to the resilience, revival, and renewed energy seen today, Detroit's story is more than its worst moment. This is a story about memory, accountability, and survival. And about why some histories demand to be remembered.Support the show
When Victor's hallucinations and violent impulses went untreated, the result was devastating: nine members of the Peterson family murdered in their home, a community's trust shattered, and a national awakening to the dire need for mental health care.IN THIS EPISODE: One October morning in 2018, sixteen-year-old Karlie Gusé walked away from her California home after attending a party the night before – and despite three witnesses who saw her walking with a piece of paper in her hand, she was never seen again. (She Disappeared, Paper In Hand) *** A Sunday drive to an antiques fair becomes an encounter with the impossible when Richard and Helen witness a massive UFO mothership. (Mothership In Gorse Field) *** A suspicious purchase of a freezer chest, a chainsaw, and a wood chipper during a snowstorm seemed strange - but it would lead investigators to one of the most shocking murder cases in Connecticut history, and revolutionize how crimes are solved. (Wood Chipper Murder of Hele Crafts) *** In 18th century England, a wealthy grocer named Henry Trigg was so terrified of grave robbers that he made an unusual request in his will: instead of burial, his body should be stored in a coffin in his barn's rafters for at least 30 years - but his attempt to protect his remains would lead to an ironic and mysterious fate. (Coffin In The Rafters) *** In the quiet farming community of Shell Lake, Saskatchewan, a family's peaceful life was shattered on August 15, 1967, when Victor Hoffman, a troubled young man with untreated mental illness, randomly chose the Peterson home and methodically killed nine members of their family - leaving only two survivors and forever changing how rural Canada approached mental health care. (The Horror That Shook Shell Lake) *** The idea that aliens visited Earth in ancient times has captivated millions through books, documentaries, and TV shows - but what does our willingness to credit extraterrestrials rather than ancient peoples reveal about modern society? Welcome to this special collection episode of Sasquatch Odyssey, featuring six of the most compelling Bigfoot encounters I've documented across the Southeastern United States over the past five years. These stories span sixty years of fear, awe, and unanswered questions, carrying us from Alabama's river bottoms to South Carolina's swamps, and showing why the South may be one of the last true sanctuaries for something we still don't understand. We open in the suffocating heat of Alabama in 1967, where a power company lineman working near the Cahaba River noticed something impossible: massive handprints sunk deep into a utility pole. Moments later, he found himself face to face with a towering presence that moved with purpose and intelligence. That encounter sets the tone for everything that follows—brief, terrifying interactions where the creature controls the moment, revealing itself only on its own terms. From there, we climb into the mountains of North Georgia in 1973, where four seasoned hunters discovered the woods had a hierarchy they didn't sit atop.Near Blue Ridge, their camp became the target of relentless intimidation—rocks crashing through darkness, trees shaking violently, and a chilling discovery at dawn: dozens of stick figures arranged in a perfect warning circle around them. The night didn't just scare them; it shattered friendships and ended their lives in the forest forever. The third account takes us into Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains in 1985, where a park ranger and wildlife biologist experienced something that demolished her scientific certainty. While stationed in a fire tower, she watched a massive creature climb the structure and examine her equipment with unsettling curiosity, as if it understood what it was seeing. Even more disturbing was what she learned afterward—that similar encounters had been quietly documented for decades, tucked away and never meant for public eyes. The most heartbreaking story comes from the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas in 1991.A family camping trip turned into a nightmare when towering beings approached their site and demonstrated strength beyond anything human—crushing rocks in their hands while the family huddled in terror. A young girl watched it unfold, and the trauma that followed tore the family apart, leaving permanent scars long after the woods fell silent again. In 2002, deep in North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest, an experienced hiker found himself living through an encounter unlike any other in my files. He described three days in captivity with what appeared to be a family group of these beings, observing tool use, complex social behavior, and a kind of focused curiosity toward human objects. His story challenges the idea of Sasquatch as a solitary wilderness phantom and suggests something closer to culture—structured intelligence living beyond our reach. Our final encounter lands in South Carolina in 2014, when college biology students captured forty-three minutes of high-definition footage of a creature inspecting their research equipment with clear understanding of its purpose. What happened next was just as chilling as what they filmed: a rapid government response, confiscated evidence, and enforced silence that raises the question of how long this phenomenon has truly been known—and how actively it's been buried.Across six stories and six decades, the same threads surface again and again: the heavy, musky odor that announces their presence, the massive handprints left behind like signatures, and the unnerving sense of being watched by something that doesn't panic or flee—but evaluates. Most unsettling of all is the repeated realization that these creatures could harm us effortlessly, yet choose restraint instead. Witnesses don't describe a mere animal. They describe something hovering in a blurred space between human and beast, perfectly adapted to remain hidden while living alongside us. What emerges from these accounts is a portrait of the American South as a vast refuge for an undiscovered species—or perhaps a parallel branch of human evolution that chose isolation over contact. From Alabama's rivers to Tennessee's peaks and the deep wild of the Ozarks and Carolinas, these beings have claimed territories in the spaces we've ignored or forgotten. They watch from cover, occasionally stepping into view when a boundary is crossed, always vanishing before the mystery can be pinned down. They want you to know the woods are not empty, that something ancient and intelligent still moves through them, and that the old instinct to tread carefully in the dark may be rooted in more than superstition. As you listen, notice how the behavior of these creatures shifts over time, especially around human technology. Consider what it means that responses to evidence sometimes seem immediate and organized. And ask yourself what else might be sitting in classified files, protected by silence and dismissal. These aren't campfire tales or urban legends. They are documented encounters from credible witnesses whose lives were never the same afterward. The South keeps its secrets well, but every now and then—between darkness and dawn, between wilderness and civilization—those secrets step out just long enough to remind us how much we still don't know.Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

This week, we're celebrating Noirvember in style with a pairing that bridges the past and present of the crime genre: John Boorman's cold-blooded, acid-tinged revenge saga Point Blank (1967) and Steve McQueen's taut, politically charged heist thriller Widows (2018). Listen as we dissect their hardboiled aesthetics, fractured moral codes, and the surprisingly emotional depths lurking beneath their genre trappings. Cody Hodgson and The RYR-1 Foundation 11/11/25Diagnosed in 2016 with RYR-1-related malignant hyperthermia, Cody Hodgson's promising NHL playing career was cut short when the effects of his disease made it impossible for him to push his body to the extent necessary in pro hockey. However, what initially looked like a major setback gave way to a very different, equally powerful calling. Now an active ambassador for the Pittsburgh, PA-based RYR-1 Foundation, Hodgson is precisely the kind of figure in the hockey world that our production staff loves connecting with. With mobile recording gear in tow, our producer and co-host, Jeff Taylor recently joined the RYR-1 Foundation in Pittsburgh for their 10th anniversary conference. A handful of in-depth interviews were conducted that day, including with former NHL'er Cody Hodgson himself, as well as Toronto-based anesthesiologist Dr. Sheila Riazi, Hodgson's diagnosing physician. Pittsburgh Penguins Opener: 7th Avenue Freeze-Out 10/03/25Today's episode kicks off with a special appearance by one of our favorite baristas at our partner, Espresso a Mano's Dormont café.After some armchair Penguins Hockey quarterback'ing by co-hosts - Jeff Taylor and Jordan DeFigio, opining is conducted as to which NHL hockey club various Marvel / DC superheroes and supervillains might support - if they were in fact …real. The problem of the Penguins' 2025-2026 likely netminding personnel is bemoaned, partly analyzed, though mostly complained about. Jeff and Jordan talk about a couple upcoming music performances and releases of their own, and the location of Madison Square Garden - the site of the Pittsburgh Penguins' season opener against the hosting NY Rangers - is clarified in spite of the much-used phrase, ‘On Broadway' when referring to the Rags' home rink.Special thanks to Espresso A Mano, Pittsburgh's finest coffee roasters and cafe, for partnering with Fly Penguins Fly podcast. The Unthinkable: Pittsburgh Penguins Captain Sidney Crosby Has Requested A Trade 09/13/25Sell the team to whomever you want, we don't care. Put whoever you want in goal on September 27th when the Pens play meaningless hockey against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Yeah, even Marc-André Fleury. For the record, we've done the Farewell-to-Flower thing at PPG Paints Arena THREE times already. cough-cough .. money-grab .. cough-cough…None of that matters anymore, because…Sidney Crosby, via his longtime agent, Pat Brisson has for all intents and purposes made it known that he would like to be traded; essentially he's requested to play NHL hockey for a team other than the Penguins. This is a developing story and we, Jordan DeFigio and Jeff Taylor found out about it AS we were recording this episode. So YES, Flyers fans, Devils fans, Rangers fans, etc: This Bud's For You.
