https://teachhoops.com/ In the pursuit of a championship culture, we often focus on the "Skill Gap"—who can shoot, who can handle pressure, and who knows the sets. But the most dangerous gap in any program is the "Competitive Gap." Every player on your roster falls into one of four distinct categories of competitiveness. As a coach, your job isn't just to identify these levels; it's to move the needle. If you have a roster full of Level 2s, you'll be "competitive." If you want to win at the highest level, you need to cultivate Level 4s who can police the standard when you aren't in the room. These players are physically present but mentally elsewhere. They are in the gym because their parents made them, because of the social status, or because they like the jersey—but they don't like the "muck and grind." The Behavior: They cut corners in sprints, complain about the "Standard," and are the first to look at the clock. The Impact: They are "Energy Takers." They act as an anchor, dragging the collective speed of the practice down. The Coach's Fix: You cannot "coach" an unwilling player into a Level 4. You must give them a choice: meet the minimum standard of the program or find a different hobby. Retention is not always a victory. This is the majority of most high school rosters. They are "good kids" who do exactly what they are told—and only what they are told. The Behavior: They are on time, they listen to instructions, and they give effort when the whistle blows. However, they lack "Internal Ignition." If the coach isn't watching, their intensity drops. The Impact: They provide stability but not "Next Play" speed. They are followers who wait for permission to be great. The Coach's Fix: Challenge them with Rep Density. Put them in small-sided games where they can't hide and must make "Zero-Second Decisions." Level 3s are dangerous in the best way possible. They have a "chip" on their shoulder and a personal mission. They want to be the leading scorer, the All-Conference guard, or the scholarship athlete. The Behavior: They are the first in the gym and the last to leave. They work with a high level of Instructional IQ. The Impact: They raise the physical standard of practice. However, their motivation is often internal and individual. They are focused on their game, which can sometimes lead to "Hero Ball" or a lack of connection with teammates. The Coach's Fix: Bridge the gap between their individual goals and the team's vision. Show them how their leadership (Level 4) is the only thing that will unlock the success they crave. The Compelled player is a different breed. They don't just want to win; they have to win. They are obsessed with the "Standard" and feel a physical discomfort when the team isn't meeting it. The Behavior: They are "Coaches on the Floor." They echo your calls, they hold teammates accountable in the huddle, and they dive for loose balls when you're up by 20. The Impact: They are Energy Givers. They create a "Player-Led" environment where the coach's voice is only needed for tactical adjustments, not for motivation. The Coach's Fix: Give them the keys. These are the members of your Leadership Council. Empower them to lead the debriefs and "Truth Room" sessions. You cannot expect a Level 4 locker room if you are a Level 2 coach. Your players will mirror your energy. If you are "mailing it in" during the January grind, your Compelled players will lose their fire, and your Unwilling players will take over the culture. In today's Cloud Wars Minute, I explain why success in the AI Economy demands bold, uncompromising leadership from CEOs — and why many aren't ready. Highlights 00:03 — It's been fascinating to see that recently, AI transformation has begun to hit hard at the CEO rank. Up until now, as we've all seen, there have been hundreds of thousands of job losses that have taken place in lower-level or mid-level jobs. And I think now we're starting to see that the new victims of AI are going to be CEOs. 00:25 — And I think we can put those into three categories: those who are unable to see what's happening and deal with it, those who are unwilling to acknowledge the reality of what's changing, and then there's those who are unseeing. They choose not to see what's going around them, or they're not willing to recognize just how serious it is. 01:15 — But I think what we're really starting to see now, and I'll offer some tangible examples here, is this is going to come down to be a real issue for CEOs, because companies that want to succeed in the AI Economy will not be able to do so unless they've got full, unbridled, uncompromising leadership and support for the business transformations being wrapped around AI. 02:30 — By every measure, Doug McMillon, the CEO of Walmart, has been a terrific CEO. But late last year, when he announced that he was going to step down as CEO, he said, “I just don't think I'm the right person for this job. We've started a lot of AI changes and transformations. I'm not sure I'm the right person to finish those. We need somebody who's faster.” 03:20 — Now, another group here is the kind I'm calling the unwilling, and they are the ones that are big on, “Well, let's have a committee. Let's form a SWAT team. We'll see what the threats are to our company. We'll see what we need to do, and we'll give them six months or nine months or a year, and they'll report.” And by then, their company is sort of over the cliff and is not going to be able to make it. 04:08 — Marc Benioff, the CEO of Salesforce, said AI has become a convenient scapegoat for everything. He said there are a lot of CEOs right now who are just saying whatever happens, good, bad, indifferent, it's all due to AI. “We had to make a lot of layoffs — that's because of AI. We had to stop doing this — we had to stop doing that — well, it's all because of AI.” He said that's a cop-out. 04:55 — So for business leaders, you can smell this in your company. You can feel it. Are we a company that is bullish and going after this thing with AI, or are we going to be one of these people who are unwilling, unseeing, and just not ready to jump in? Being willing to die for something is admirable, but what is often more difficult is living for something—day-by-day, decision-by-decision. The church at Pergamum was willing to die for Christ, but was unwilling to live for him. Its holiness was hypocritical, and the lifestyles of its were licentious. Jesus called them to repentance, and promised to be their strength and their very great reward. We see four things in the text: 1. Hypocritical Holiness (v. 14) 2. Licentious Lifestyles (vv. 14–15) 3. Repentance and Reformation (v. 16) 4. A Promise of Purity (v. 17)

2/19/2026 THOSE UNWILLING TO PAY THE PRICE SHOULD NOT EXPECT TO RISEEPISODE 1744Sometimes a leader must pay a huge price to go to the next level. Perhaps by sacrifice, perhaps by effort, perhaps financially, perhaps an investment of time or contribution just know this, going to the next level will cost. Those unwilling to pay the price should not expect to rise. The growth and transformation every leader is compelled to pursue requires something deep inside them they might not even be aware they possess. The only way they will discover it is by the pressure of doing something different, unfamiliar, uncomfortable likely for the first time.
