On October 19, 1977, Lynyrd Skynyrd was inarguably the greatest rock band touring the USA and played what was their final concert in Greenville, South Carolina.  While enroute to Baton Rouge on October 20th, their plane crashed in the remote southwest Mississippi woodlands, killing 6 passengers to include frontman Ronny Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup vocalist Cassie Gaines.  Decades later, their classic southern rock ballads are remembered worldwide - and everyone has a favorite Skynyrd song!  Lee Kjos describes why Skynyrd remains his all-time favorite band. We then visit personally with Ronnie Van Zant's childhood friend and bodyguard, Gene Odom, and several Amite County, Mississippi locals who first responded to the crash. What was growing up in Jacksonville like for Ronnie Van Zant? How'd they develop their band name, what events inspired their lyrics, and what was it like touring with them? What kind of guy was Ronnie Van Zant and how would he likely have wanted to be remembered? What do first responders most remember about that day? What compelled them to privately fund and to recently construct a beautiful Lynyrd Skynyrd Monument nearby?  Having met these guests and heard their stories, what's Ramsey's final take on it? All of these questions and some incredible never-before-told anecdotes in today's very special  from-the-vault episode of Duck Season Somewhere.  We received tons of feedback when this episode first aired in 2020. There's plenty of debate around crippling rates in waterfowl hunting, but the best duck hunters agree that we can reduce them and put more birds in the bag. Because if the numbers we do have are close to accurate, we duck hunters are losing way, way too many birds. We talked to two veteran duck hunters about how to improve our waterfowl recovery rates. Lee Kjos, a renowned wildlife photographer and the marketing guru behind Boss Shotshells, stresses the importance of identifying the right choke and load combination by pattering your gun. We also talked to legendary bird dog trainer Tom Dokken about how trained retrievers can help us recover more birds, and how to set yours up for success. Hosted by Editor-in-Chief Alex Robinson. Andy is very passionate about all things outdoors but more specifically, trapping.  He is the director of District 6 which is the association's metro district.  The number of trappers in Minnesota has gone down in recent years.  There are many reasons to blame for this but one of those is that trappers tend to get a back reputation.  Andy is out to change that reputation with his passion and willingness to teach anyone who shows interest. Then, in his teen years, he picked up a camera. He told me stories about getting film developed and transitioning to digital. We talked about billions of photographs being taken everyday, and nothing being printed anymore. He told me stories about some of the incredible people and places he has had the opportunity to photograph. We talked about being in the moment vs. capturing the moment. He gave some advice about shutting off when it comes to work time and play time. He told me about keeping his brain 'quiet' and remembering that ideas never run out - we just have to see them. He talked about magazine covers, and his process of retrieving all his past covers. We discussed photography as an art, and trying to hold on to that. We also touched a little bit on marketing strategies and the influence of social media in the outdoor industry. This episode was a blast, and I'm so glad to have Lee as a friend and a role model! Thanks for listening to another #TuesdayTalkwithLB
