In this episode of Makes Sense with Dr. JC, we explore a quiet but unsettling observation: as AI advances and digital content explodes, many of us are feeling less connected, less nourished, and less sure about what's real. This isn't a complaint; it's a moment of awareness. A Hmmm? From social media illusions and synthetic meaning to ancient wisdom traditions that warned us about Maya, the illusion of “not now,” this episode invites you to question a deeply ingrained belief: that life's blessings exist somewhere in the future, after you've fixed yourself, earned enough, or survived one more season. What if that belief is backwards? Through personal reflection, spiritual insight, and lived experience, including lessons from deep inner stripping rather than addition, this conversation reframes hardship, loss, and disruption as moments where the wrapping paper of illusion is torn away, revealing what was never missing to begin with. This episode is an invitation to stop running past your life… and finally unwrap the present. Make Sense? F*ck Fitting In is a deep dive into one of the most invisible forces shaping our lives: approval-seeking. In this episode, Dr. JC Doornick exposes how most of us unknowingly construct an internal A.I., an Artificial Identity, a learned algorithm designed to gain acceptance, avoid conflict, and perform appropriately. Over time, this identity edits our words, tones, decisions, and even our sense of self, until we forget where the real us ends and the performance begins. Through sharp insight, cultural critique, and the lens of the Interface Response System (IRS), this conversation reveals how approval becomes a silent operating system that keeps us rehearsing the future, regretting the past, and missing the only place authenticity exists: the present moment. You'll learn how awareness cracks the code, how curiosity (“Hmmm?”) creates cognitive distance, and how authenticity returns when the mask powers down. This episode is a call to stop auditioning for life, stop being manipulable by algorithms, social or internal, and reclaim the courage to live from truth instead of approval. Because when you stop fitting in, you don't lose yourself… You finally get yourself back. Make Sense? In this Parshas Vayigash review, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe focuses on the climactic moment when Yosef reveals himself to his brothers: “I am Yosef—is my father still alive?”—a revelation so shocking the brothers are speechless, realizing the entire 22-year saga (their sale of Yosef, his suffering, and rise to power) was Hashem's precise plan. The brothers' terror mirrors the future Day of Judgment, when Hashem will reveal “I am Hashem” and everything in history will suddenly make perfect sense.Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes the wake-up call: we sell our potential for fleeting gains (like the brothers sold Yosef for shoes' worth of silver), wasting time on distractions (social media, materialism) instead of prioritizing Torah, mitzvot, family, and spiritual growth. He urges laser focus on what truly matters—relationships, legacy, and eternal investment—warning that Hashem will hold us accountable not against others, but on whether we maximized our unique selves. Bloodwork Basics: When Testing Makes Sense

The Dr. Jules Plant-Based Podcast

"Should you get routine blood work?" seems like a straightforward question, but the answer lies in understanding how our bodies process nutrients and when testing actually provides meaningful information. Nutrient deficiencies can be surprisingly sneaky, calcium deficiencies might take decades to show up in blood tests while silently damaging bone health, and even B12 deficiencies can remain hidden for 6-12 months before symptoms emerge. For those following or transitioning to plant-based diets, there's particular interest in monitoring nutritional status, but ordering "everything" on a blood panel isn't always the right approach. When we test without specific reasons, we often find incidental fluctuations that trigger unnecessary follow-up procedures, creating anxiety and straining healthcare resources. A better strategy is targeted testing based on your specific risk factors, symptoms, and dietary patterns. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, those taking medications like metformin or regular antacids, people with relevant family histories, and anyone on restrictive diets might benefit from more comprehensive screening. Before reaching for the needle, consider tracking your nutrition through tools like the Canadian Food Guide, Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen Checklist, or apps like Cronometer to identify potential gaps. When testing makes sense, a complete blood count and metabolic profile provide foundational information, while specific nutrient tests can be added based on individual needs. Remember that for plant-based eaters, B12 supplementation remains essential regardless of blood test results, some deficiencies simply take too long to appear in testing. The ultimate goal isn't just finding problems after they develop but preventing them through varied, nutrient-dense foods and lifestyle habits that support overall health. Visit plantbaseddrjules.com for more resources on optimizing your nutrition through thoughtful, evidence-based approaches.Go check out my website for tons of free resources on how to transition towards a healthier diet and lifestyle. You can download my free plant-based recipes eBook and a ton of other free resources by visiting the Digital Downloads tab of my website at https://www.plantbaseddrjules.com/shopDon't forget to check out my blog at https://www.plantbaseddrjules.com/blog You can also watch my educational videos on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMpkQRXb7G-StAotV0dmahQCheck out my upcoming live events and free eCourse, where you'll learn more about how to create delicious plant-based recipes: https://www.plantbaseddrjules.com/Go follow me on social media by visiting my Facebook page and Instagram accountshttps://www.facebook.com/plantbaseddrjuleshttps://www.instagram.com/plantbased_dr_jules/Last but not least, the best way to show your support and to help me spread my message is to subscribe to my podcast and to leave a 5 star review on Apple and Spotify! Thanks so much!Peace, love, plants!Dr. Jules

Makes Sense - with Dr. JC Doornick

One of the greatest surprises of this journey wasn't the visions, the purging, or even the revelations; it was the people. In just four days, strangers became family. Not metaphorically. Literally. People from different countries, histories, and wounds trusted one another with their tears, their truths, their breakdowns, and their rebirths. This episode explores one of the most important distinctions of the entire experience: the environment is not secondary to the medicine—the people are the medicine. Arkana is not just a retreat center; it is a living ecosystem designed to make it safe enough to stop performing and start being real. When judgment evaporates, and egos are checked at the door, something ancient reawakens. Trust becomes the air you breathe. Authenticity becomes effortless. Healing accelerates. By the third and final night of Ayahuasca, the work had shifted. There was no war. No descent. No funerals. Grandmother wasn't teaching anymore; she was integrating. Confirming. Blessing. What once felt overwhelming now appeared as memory, perspective, and clarity. The darkness was never removed; it was revealed as temporary. And for the first time, it became clear that both the darkness and the light were never happening to me. They were moving through me. Day Five introduced San Pedro, Huachuma, the Medicine of the Heart. Where Ayahuasca turns you inward to meet your shadows, San Pedro moves you outward into connection, unity, empathy, and love. Under the guidance of Alcides, a man who doesn't just tell stories but transmits truth, the group experienced something rare and unmistakable: collective heart coherence. Not symbolic. Not poetic. Physically real. Fourteen nervous systems beating as one. This episode captures the final transmission of the Sacred Valley: connection isn't something you create, it's what remains when you remove the barriers. The heart has always been unified. It's the ego that divides it. San Pedro didn't give us anything new; it revealed what had always been there beneath the masks, defenses, and personas. As the fire burned low beneath the Andean sky, one final truth became clear: plant medicine isn't the point, it's the doorway. Nothing fixes you. Nothing completes you. These medicines remove what was never yours to carry and reveal who you've been all along. This is the ceremony after the ceremony. And this is where the journey home truly begins. Make Sense? In the third installment of her annual "Comparing Walmart and Target No Longer Makes Sense" series, Carol Spieckerman examines why the gap between these two retailers has never been wider—or more illuminating about retail's future. With both companies navigating CEO transitions and knee-deep in the holiday season, Carol unpacks how Walmart has evolved into a platform powerhouse while Target grapples with fundamental retail challenges. The comparison may make less sense than ever, but that's exactly what makes it essential listening to understand where retail is headed in 2026 and beyond.Key TakeawaysPlatform vs. Retailer: Why Walmart's diversification strategy is rewriting retail's rules – Walmart's advertising and membership businesses now represent one-third of consolidated operating income, transforming "diversify or die" from a catchphrase into a survival strategy. Meanwhile, Target's struggling to master basic retail blocking and tackling as its Ulta Beauty partnership heads for the exit. The AI and automation divide: How technology is creating an unbridgeable competitive moat – From Walmart's ChatGPT partnership that embeds shopping into daily decision-making to their automated fulfillment centers handling 50% of e-commerce volume, Carol explores how Walmart is building infrastructure for tomorrow while Target's technology goals remain aspirations.Every income cohort: Why Walmart's high-low strategy is crushing Target's traditional strongholds – Carol dissects how Walmart is gaining share across all income levels, as customers pay premiums for the privilege of expedited delivery, while Target is celebrating in-stock improvements as achievements rather than table stakes.Leadership tells all: What CEO transitions reveal about retail confidence vs. crisis – Carol examines the wildly divergent leadership communication and succession planning strategies, from Doug McMillon's "aggressive humility" and smooth handoff to John Furner to Brian Cornell's extended farewell tour and Michael Fiddelke's risky opening moves.Comparing Walmart and Target reveals a fundamental truth about modern retail: you're either building the platform or paying rent to someone who is. Walmart has become retail's operating system—monetizing traffic through advertising, memberships, marketplace commissions, and fulfillment services—while Target remains trapped in traditional retail's margin-crushing cycle. The irony? Every challenge Target faces has become a Walmart profit center. As retail heads into 2026, the question isn't whether Walmart will keep winning, but whether anyone can build an alternative platform fast enough to matter.Want to be a guest on Spieckerman Speaks Retail? The Ruins, the Return, and the Realignment After two intense nights with Ayahuasca, Day Five brought a different kind of teacher: the Sacred Valley itself. In the ancient terraces of Pisac and the colossal stones of Ollantaytambo, I found a quiet wisdom that didn't speak in visions—but in presence, humility, and perspective. As I walked among mountain-carved ruins, burial sites, and engineering miracles we still can't explain, I began to understand my own “deaths” from the ceremonies as returns—returns to trust, patience, and truth. This unexpected excursion stirred a mix of sadness and gratitude as Thanksgiving approached and I felt the ache of being away from my family… while standing in the embrace of a new one. In this episode, I explore how ancient civilizations, unexpected emotions, and the right people at the right time can become medicine just as powerful as the plant itself—and how trust, not fear, becomes the compass for Night Three. After the massive breakthrough of Night One—two funerals, the collapsing skyscraper, the dissolving of old fears—I walked into Night Two believing the work was done. I felt complete, emptied, reborn. I even considered not drinking at all. But Ayahuasca loves to laugh at certainty, and the shamans gently suggested a tiny “check-in” dose. Just a sip. Just enough to see if anything remained. Fifteen minutes later, the medicine hit me with the force of a spiritual hurricane. What followed was not enlightenment. Not beauty. Not cosmic revelation. It was overstimulation on a scale I had never experienced—violent fractals, exploding geometry, unraveling mandalas, and the infamous Transformer-Mickey-Mouse-Jiffy-Pop-Clown-Show that appears when the mind begins to collapse under its own fear. My nervous system short-circuited. My breath vanished. My intention dissolved. Everything became too loud, too fast, too much. And the only thing attacking me was my own resistance. Guided to the “bad boys' corner” of the maloca, I spent hours trapped in a visual and emotional hurricane, praying for release and finding none. No purge. No relief. No escape. Just chaos. Shame. Fear. A distorted carnival spinning out of control. Until one quiet moment changed everything. When I finally remembered the real question—the IRS question, the Dragon's question:Hmmm? What is actually happening here? What is this showing me? The answer landed like a whisper:Time. Your forgotten ally. Your secret weapon. The truth that dissolves all suffering. This too shall pass. The visuals didn't stop. The nightmare didn't soften. But my relationship to it changed. And the instant fear lost its authority, Grandmother stepped back in respect. She hadn't been punishing me. She had been teaching me the one lesson I didn't know I still needed: Nothing permanent can harm you. Only fear convinces you otherwise.Everything—anxiety, worry, panic, uncertainty—is just passing weather. In this episode, I take you inside the hardest night of my life, a night where the medicine became the mirror, the storm became the teacher, and time revealed itself as the true healer. Through Alan Watts, the IRS, and a collapse that turned into clarity, this chapter is a reminder for anyone drowning in fear: It's rarely the situation that hurts us. It's the meaning we've assigned to it. And when we zoom out—beyond our stories, beyond our worries, beyond this tiny spinning rock in a universe of trillions—everything softens. Everything shifts. Everything passes. Night Two wasn't a failure. It was the teaching beneath the teaching. The darkness behind the breakthrough. The reminder I didn't want… but desperately needed. This too shall pass. And the next morning, Day Three began—with sunlight, stone ruins, grounded earth, and a much-needed return to the outside world. We have gone through four industrial revolutions in the US, why does the AI revolution scare us the most? Industrial revolutions are nothing new in the United States as we have had four including the current one we are in. The first one came in the mid-18th century when changes came for waterpower, steam engines, and textile manufacturing. The second industrial revolution was in the mid-19th century when steel became a big factor along with electricity and mass production. We also saw transportation by railroads and automobiles during this revolution. The third industrial revolution came around the mid-1990s. Some of us who are 50 years or older may remember the effects. Electronics including personal computers, information technologies, and this scary thing called the World Wide Web were developed during this revolution. The fourth industrial revolution is happening now and it's scary because we don't know what the future holds. This revolution includes digital, physical, and biological technologies. This includes AI, the Internet of Things, and robotics as well. The reason this is scarier than the third revolution with personal computers was that people could see how they could benefit and get more done and maybe use that computer to start a web-based business. Currently with AI, people are not seeing how it will benefit or improve their lives but only how it could take away their livelihood by making their job obsolete. There could be a slowdown in the advancement of AI similar to what happened in the late 70s with nuclear power. People as a whole rejected nuclear power, and it has taken almost 50 years to be accepted as we can see in today's newspapers. Based on history, it looks like the acceptance of AI may slow down because polls show that just 40% of people said the AI industry could be trusted to do the right thing, and 57% say the government needs more regulation on tech and AI. Maybe your job is safe for longer than you thought.   Bitcoin holder Strategy should be getting nervous about the price of Bitcoin The public company Strategy, which used to be known as MicroStrategy and trades under the symbol MSTR, should be getting nervous about its 650,000 Bitcoins that are worth around $56 billion depending on the day. The problem is the company has about $8 billion of convertible bonds outstanding that require interest payments and about $7.6 billion of perpetual preferred stock that also pays dividends. The cost to pay the interest and these dividends is about $780 million annually and since all the company's assets are essentially in Bitcoin, they don't receive any interest or profits from that asset. The CEO, Michael Slayer, is saying if they must, they will sell Bitcoin to raise the cash to pay the dividends and interest payments. The convertible bonds could also be problematic down the road as they are due in about 4.4 years on average and come with a combined interest rate of 0.421%. The stock itself has been pulverized, and its market cap has been as low as $49 billion from a high of $128 billion in July. MSCI has proposed cutting digital asset treasury companies from its indexes if crypto tokens make up a major part of the assets. This decision will come in a little over a month on January 15th and if this happens, Strategy could see $2.8 billion in passive outflows. JPMorgan estimates that about $9 billion of the company's market cap is tied to passive and index ETFs and mutual funds. This could put more pressure on the stock if more indexes also decide to remove these treasury companies. You won't believe how the company makes their profit and loss statement. When the price of Bitcoin rises, the company books a paper profit even if it did not sell any Bitcoin. Obviously, if Bitcoin goes down in value, they must book the losses as well. One must love the estimates for the earnings of Strategy for 2025.  Strategy is expected to report a loss of $5.5 billion or a profit of $6.3 billion or something in between. That is some great guidance! I don't know where Bitcoin is going today, tomorrow or anytime in the future, but I would be sweating bullets if I held Bitcoin or Strategy in my clients' portfolios or my portfolio!   Holiday shopping hits record levels! We continue to see conflicting data when it comes to the health of the consumer. They continue to say they don't feel good, but the hard data and the actual numbers remain quite strong. In a positive note from the National Retail Federation (NRF), an estimated 202.9 million consumers shopped during the five-day stretch from Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday. That is the largest turnout since data for the five-day period started being collected in 2017, and it easily tops last year's level of 197 million shoppers. Expectations for the period were also quite low considering the estimate was for just 186.9 million shoppers. While online shoppers increased 9% year over year to 134.9 million people, in-store shoppers still saw a nice increase of 3% to 129.5 million people. Adobe also provided sales data for the five-day period that indicated consumers spent $44.2 billion online, which was a 7.7% year-over-year jump. Black Friday in particular saw strong online sales as they totaled $11.8 billion and grew by 9.1% year over year. A big question here is if the shopping was done to capitalize on deals in an attempt to save money. That could be an indicator of a weaker economy, but I don't believe that's the full story as shoppers told NRF at the end of Cyber Monday that they had about 53% of their holiday shopping remaining, which was similar to a year ago. For the full holiday season, the NRF expects record sales of between $1.1 trillion and $1.2 trillion from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31. This would be the first time sales would top $1 trillion, and it would represent a 3.7% to 4.2% increase from the year-ago holiday period.    Financial Planning: When Tax-Loss Harvesting Makes Sense and When It Doesn't Tax-loss harvesting is often promoted as a smart tax-saving strategy, but investors should understand its pitfalls before hitting the sell button. Selling a position at a loss may reduce taxes today, but it could also mean missing a rebound in that investment potentially costing more in lost gains than the tax benefit received. For example, if an investor buys a stock for $50,000 and harvests a $5,000 loss when the investment drops to $45,000, and they are in a 24.3% combined tax bracket (15% federal + 9.3% state), the tax savings is just over $1,200. That means the investment only needs to rise 2.7% to wipe out the benefit of harvesting, something that could easily occur during the required 30-day wash-sale waiting period. Even if the position doesn't rebound, repurchasing after 31 days locks in a lower cost basis, potentially increasing future taxable gains possibly in a higher tax bracket. Many investors, especially retirees with lower taxable income, are already in the 0% long-term capital gains bracket, meaning losses may not even be needed; a married couple in retirement could have income near $150,000 and still realize long-term gains tax-free. Tax-loss harvesting can still be valuable when losses are large in percentage terms, when it helps avoid a higher tax bracket or IRMAA surcharges, when offsetting short-term gains (which long-term losses can do), or when exiting a position you don't plan to repurchase.   Companies Discussed: Weyerhaeuser Company (WY), Netflix, Inc. (NFLX), Energizer Holdings, Inc. (ENR) & Valvoline Inc. (VVV)

My Ayahuasca Experience – Part Two: Night One With Grandmother There's a moment before every first ceremony when fear tightens, identity resists, and truth begins to breathe. Night One starts long before the cup touches your lips, on the plane, in the tension between who you've been and who you're afraid to become. By the time the sun drops behind the Andes and your name is called in the maloca, you realize there is no turning back. In this episode, I take you into that moment… the doorway between the known and the unraveling. Grandmother met me instantly, no warm welcome, no gentle reunion. My confidence was my mistake, and she humbled me with a cosmic slap that dragged me into the gravity of the real work. What followed was a war in space that was really a war inside myself: fear of loss, fear of failure, fear of collapse, fear of not being able to protect the people I love. And just when the darkness felt overwhelming, support arrived in the form of white light, my wife's essence, reminding me that even in the deepest battles, I'm not alone. Then came the purge… the clearing… the release. And what unfolded next were two funerals. One for the fear that my daughter needed saving. One for the fear that money could crumble my life at any moment. Grandmother melted my illusions, literally, and showed me the quiet truth beneath survival:Humans are here to love. Everything else is noise. Night One left me humbled, emptied, and changed. I wasn't done healing… but something irreversible had shifted. Episode 1 of 4 Part Series — Dying to Know: My Ayahuasca Experience Into the Sacred Valley of Peru This opening episode marks the true beginning of a five-part, raw, unfiltered account of my time working with plant medicine in the Sacred Valley of Peru at the Arkana Spiritual Center. Before any medicine was poured, before the visions or revelations, there was the quiet ache. The inner calling. The fear beneath the fear. The deep, restless sense that something in life still feels unfinished. Most people don't seek out Ayahuasca or Sapo because everything is perfect. They come because something inside them is dying to know, Who am I really? What is this life for? Did I miss something essential while trying to keep it all together? The paradox is that what we're dying to know is not “out there” somewhere in a jungle or temple. It's here, buried beneath layers of identity, protection, trauma, and roles that no longer serve us. Plant medicine doesn't teach you new information; it excavates. It dismantles the inner tyrant who insists life must be predictable and safe. It burns off outdated versions of the self so a truer knowing can rise. Ego death isn't your death; it's the death of everything blocking your access to truth. But the real challenge isn't the ceremony, it's integration. You can't pour awakened clarity back into the shape of an old life. Integration is about becoming the version of you that the medicine revealed and staying awake in a world designed to pull you back to sleep. This is why I came back to Peru, not for novelty or visions, but for the soul's quality control. To shed another layer, to die another small death, to remember something ancient living inside me. Something I had forgotten. This is the moment before the beginning.Where running stops.Where remembering starts.Where the real journey begins. I talk through the biblical principles behind private property and personal responsibility, highlight the dangers of socialism and centralized power, and pull in insights from economists, history, and modern culture. If you've ever wondered why free markets outperform every alternative, why socialism fails every time it's tried, or why individual responsibility is the foundation of a thriving society, this episode lays it out in simple, hard-hitting terms. It's no secret and plain to see what the true cause of disease and most of all the problems we face today comes from Emotional Mismanagement. Our inability to control the only thing we actually have control over. Our response to the inconvenient obstacle course of challenges life throws at us.. Today, we're talking about one of the most critical skills in emotional self-mastery: protecting your peace by recognizing the people who quietly drain it. These people and their patterns show up so subtly that we often don't notice our energy leaking until we're already exhausted, frustrated, and combative. In essence, we all work hard to maintain consistency and reach the flow state where things start going our way. These people seemingly show up with the intention of stealing that flow. Therefore, I call them Flow Burglars, and I've identified five predictable archetypes, each of which disrupts your flow in its own way.  During today's playtime, we are going to learn how to recognize, disarm, and outsmart them BEFORE they drain your energy and burglarize your flow. Here are the 5 Archetypes: Comfort Clinger, who uses your support to avoid growth Ungrateful Goblin, who absorbs your kindness without a hint of appreciation Validation Vampire, who appears to want guidance but really wants your agreement Narrative Ninja, who manipulates through emotional storytelling Hard-Headed Hurricane, who chooses chaos again and again and invites you into it. Each of these patterns drains your energy differently. However, the solution to all of them is the same: discernment, the power to see people clearly and consciously, read their intentions accurately, and choose your response from a place of wisdom rather than reflex.  Discernment protects your peace because it keeps you from stepping into roles you were never meant to play. The Paradox of Friendship - Episode 122

This week, I want to explore something most people overlook: the paradox of friendship. I wrote a piece for a new podcast episode called “The Friendship Frequency” - The Paradox of Friendship: How Not Needing Friends Draws the Right Ones Closer Reflecting on the previous conversation on “Validation,” I see a strong correlation between seeking and obtaining friends and the desire for validation. This can get sticky as we find ourselves seeking friends for the wrong reasons, which means getting tethered to the wrong people who not only don't serve you and your goals and dreams, but also cause conflict and unnecessary distraction. I interviewed an extraordinary guest on my podcast named Chris Bailey who has a crazy viral TED Talk on this topic We're taught to find good friends, to look for connection, to build community. But what if the real secret to attracting the right friends isn't about seeking at all? What if it begins with becoming comfortable walking alone, and realizing that we were never truly alone to start with? Here's the paradox: the less we need friendship to feel whole, the more we attract friends who are whole themselves. The person who doesn't cling, doesn't perform, and doesn't chase — becomes magnetic. It's the same principle that applies in business and leadership: the individual who leads with calm confidence, who doesn't exude desperation for clients or approval, naturally draws people in. So today's conversation isn't about loneliness — it's about wholeness. It's about understanding how self-friendship becomes the signal that draws in the right people, and how those relationships enrich our lives when they're built on resonance rather than need. Send us a textA rooftop can be a power plant or a battleground. In this week's Take It To The Board episode, we tackle a central question: should homeowners be able to use solar power without running into resistance from their own community associations? Host Donna DiMaggio Berger speaks with Ben Delman of Solar United Neighbors to break down where personal energy freedom bumps up against HOA oversight.Donna and Ben explore the real factors behind a switch to solar energy—from hardware costs and permitting timelines to interconnection delays, SRECs, and the impact of net metering. If you've ever wondered what a typical home can offset via solar energy, how much a solar energy system costs, or how long it takes to recoup the investment, they'll walk you through the numbers in clear, practical terms.Donna and Ben are also joined by Dixie Koenemann, a homeowner from Ohio whose HOA pushed back at every step of her rooftop solar installation. She shares her firsthand experience navigating restrictive HOA rules and the strategy she used -- reviewing governing documents, tracking performance impacts, and citing state law-- to challenge vague or burdensome limitations that could have prevented her and her husband from enjoying the benefits of solar energy. With the federal 30% tax credit ending, the conversation turns to what's changing, what isn't, and why local measures like faster permitting and fair interconnection policies are crucial to keeping solar accessible. Related Links:Podcast: Going Green Saves Some Green — with Nicolas Milo of KW Property ManagementResource: Solar United NeighborsArticle: What Can Be Done About Solar Panels?

In this insightful episode, we sit down with Rizwan Virk -  MIT-trained computer scientist, video-game pioneer, entrepreneur, and bestselling author of The Simulation Hypothesis - to explore one of the most provocative ideas of our time: could our reality itself be a simulation? Rizwan brings a uniquely broad background to the table. At MIT and Stanford, he studied the fundamentals of computation and management, then went on to found and lead game- and VR-related ventures, incubate startups at MIT's “Play Labs”, invest in emerging technology, and produce films. In his landmark book, he connects quantum physics, artificial intelligence, video-game evolution, and ancient mystical traditions to argue for the simulation hypothesis.  In our conversation, we go deep into: What exactly the simulation hypothesis means — and why it's more than sci-fi speculation. How the evolution of video games and virtual reality helps illuminate the possibility of a simulated reality. The philosophical and ethical implications of living inside a simulation (or treating our world as if we might). Why this idea resonates not only with computer science, but with mysticism, consciousness studies, and quantum weirdness. Practical takeaways: if reality is less “solid” than we assume, how might that change how we live, meaning-make, and design our lives? Whether you're a tech innovator, spiritual seeker, science enthusiast, or simply curious about what's really “real,” this episode will challenge your assumptions, expand your thinking, and invite you to play at a higher level of awareness. Tune in, question the system — and maybe you'll never look at your life the same way again. Nic is a Senior Lecturer at Princeton University and one of the foremost voices on Self-Worth Theory, a framework first developed by Dr. Martin Covington. His work brings this theory to life, helping students, professionals, and leaders understand how the drive to protect our self-worth often hides beneath patterns like procrastination, perfectionism, and imposter syndrome. You may know Nic from his viral TED Talk, where he reveals why high achievers often struggle the most—and how true confidence comes not from doing more, but from redefining where our sense of worth comes from. This isn't just a conversation about productivity—it's about identity. It's about how we relate to failure, success, and the quiet belief that we are—or aren't—enough. Recruiting Conversations

What if your entire market has fewer than 100 LOs? Is hiring a recruiter still worth it? In this episode of Recruiting Conversations, I walk through the exact framework for determining whether a recruiter is the right move in a small market. I cover the systems, mindset, math, and sequencing that make it work, and share a real-world story of one leader who turned 85 LOs into 9 hires in 12 months. This isn't about headcount. It's about mastery, clarity, and building a system that multiplies your time. Episode Breakdown [00:00] The Question – Is it worth hiring a recruiter if I only have 70 to 100 loan officers in my area? [01:00] Why Market Size Is the Wrong Lens – It's not how many LOs exist, it's how many are aligned and how strong your system is [02:00] Visibility vs. True Recruiting – Reaching out once is not recruiting. You need consistent, structured engagement [02:30] Real Story: Midwest Leader With 85 LOs – After mapping the market, he realized very few LOs had received consistent value or follow-up [03:30] Question 1: Is Recruiting a Top 3 Priority? – If not, a recruiter becomes an admin, not a multiplier [04:00] Question 2: Do You Have a System? – CRM, avatar, cadence, scripting, follow-up, all must be in place before hiring [04:45] Question 3: Are You Recruiting for Fit or Volume? – In small markets, alignment is more important than raw production [05:20] Question 4: Can You Tell a Clear Story? – If your recruiter can't communicate your value clearly, you'll lose to comp-focused competitors [06:00] The Math That Makes It Work 3 key hires = $60K/month revenue $720K annually More than enough to justify the hire [06:30] What a Recruiter Should Be – Not a cold caller, but a connector who runs value plays and books warm calls [07:00] When to Delay the Hire – If your system is messy or undefined, wait. Build first. Then hire [07:30] Real Results – The Midwest leader built a system first, hired a recruiter second, and scaled to 9 hires in a "too small" market [08:00] Action Steps Build a clean LO list Document your recruiting message Create a 90-day value-add follow-up plan Prove it works Hire a recruiter to run the top of funnel [09:30] Closing Thought – You don't need more market. You need more mastery. Strategy wins, not size Key Takeaways It's Not About Market Size. It's About Market Mastery – A recruiter in a small market works if the system is already built Recruiting Must Be a Top Priority – No hire can replace your ownership of the vision Build First, Hire Second – Document your message, process, and rhythms before bringing someone in Focus on Alignment Over Volume – In a small market, values and vision matter more than raw numbers Your Story Wins the Game – When your message is clear, your recruiter becomes a magnet, not a salesperson A small market doesn't limit your impact. Lack of clarity does. Build the system. Then scale it with the right partner. Want help building your recruiting system so a recruiter can multiply it? Okay, we're back with another real live media buying case study… but, with a bit of a twist. As the name of this episode would suggest, Rich ended up paying more for radio for this client in this market than he's paid for any radio anywhere, ever… but as you can imagine, there's a good reason… which Rich will explain in detail. But just because he paid a lot, don't assume that he didn't get a good deal. Confused? As you'll hear… media buying is a supply and demand game… when supply is low, prices go high. Then you have to decide what your options are. If there aren't any good options… well… I think you can see where this is going.

Three companies, one economic reality—and three very different responses. Six Flags is doubling down on its “smaller and more nimble” plan, prioritizing core parks and openly confirming that more closures or sales are coming. United Parks & Resorts (SeaWorld/Busch Gardens) is battling brand confusion after a 25% profit drop, citing weather and marketing challenges while its Halloween events hit record highs. Meanwhile, Disneyland Resort announced 100 layoffs as part of an “organizational recalibration,” even as its parks remain packed and profitable. Philip and Scott unpack how each company's move reflects a different playbook for survival: consolidation, rebranding, and recalibration. The big question—whose strategy will actually work? In this episode, I explore the paradox of Artificial Intelligence, not as a hero or a villain, but as a mirror. What's really rising or falling isn't AI itself—it's us, the humans holding the prompt. Together, GPT-5 and I unpack how this technology can awaken creativity or quietly erode it, depending on how consciously we engage with it. Make Sense? What you're about to hear is not just a conversation between man and machine. It's a collaboration between awareness and automation, a real-time experiment in creation itself. Because here's the question that keeps me up at night: What happens when the tools we built to extend human intelligence start to replace the act of thinking itself? This episode isn't about whether AI is good or bad. It's about whether we, as humans, will rise with it—or fall asleep beneath it. So, take a breath. Let's make sense… of the Rise and Fall of AI. In this episode of Makes Sense with Dr. JC, we explore one of the most transformative questions ever asked: “What's more important to you — to be right, or to be kind?” Dr. JC shares the true story of the moment his mentor, Dr. Larry Markson, shattered his ego with that single question — a moment that became a turning point in his life and the foundation of the Interface Response System (IRS). You'll discover why the human brain is wired to defend its sense of rightness, how that instinct often masks a deeper need for validation, and what happens neurologically and emotionally when we flip the switch and choose kindness instead. This isn't about moral perfection — it's about freedom. When you let go of the need to win and focus on understanding, you stop living in defense mode and start leading with awareness, compassion, and power. Being right feeds the ego. Being kind frees the soul. Make Sense? Listen now to learn how to reclaim your will to power, rise above victimhood, and rediscover your inner Superman.
