Interesting, informative guests on all things upland bird dogs and bird hunting, hosted by the creator of TV series Wingshooting USA
The Upland Nation podcast is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in upland bird hunting and bird dogs. Hosted by Scott Linden, this podcast offers a wealth of knowledge, entertaining stories, and expert advice from various guests in the field. As a newcomer to podcasts, I was instantly hooked by the engaging nature of the show and the genuine passion that Scott brings to each episode.
One of the best aspects of The Upland Nation podcast is the wide range of topics covered. Scott and his guests delve into everything from training techniques and gun fit to travel tips and ethical hunting practices. Whether you are a seasoned hunter or just starting out, there is something for everyone in each episode. I particularly appreciate how Scott treats people of all different competency levels, encouraging new hunters while still providing valuable insights for more experienced individuals.
Another great aspect of this podcast is the high production value and Scott's interviewing style. The episodes are well-paced, informative, and often filled with humorous anecdotes. Scott has a knack for asking thoughtful questions and allowing his guests to share their expertise without interrupting or dominating the conversation. This creates a comfortable atmosphere that makes you feel like you're sitting down with friends discussing your shared love for upland bird hunting.
If there was one downside to The Upland Nation podcast, it would be the lack of alternative methods to contact Scott aside from Facebook. While it may not be a major issue for most listeners, those who do not use or prefer not to use Facebook might find it challenging to reach out or engage with the host directly. It would be helpful if there was an alternative messaging forum recommended where listeners can connect with Scott outside of social media platforms.
In conclusion, The Upland Nation podcast is top-notch entertainment and education for upland bird hunters and enthusiasts alike. With its engaging content, expert guests, and enjoyable storytelling style, this podcast keeps listeners excited about their favorite pastime even when they can't be out in the field. Scott's dedication to his audience and his commitment to providing valuable information make this podcast a must-listen for anyone interested in upland bird hunting and bird dogs.
"High intensity" is how author and passionate chukar hunter describes his chosen sport. He should know, he's been doing it long enough to acquire a unique perspective and plenty of wisdom which he shares with us all. "It ain't over 'til it's over" ... so said baseball player-philosopher Yogi Berra. It's true in bird hunting, too. Once your dog stands a bird, there are a lot of things you can do right - or wrong - to conclude the transaction successfully with a bird on the ground. It's what you want, but just as important, it's what your dog wants, isn't it? I'll cover five places in the hunt (okay, one is before the hunt) when doing something differently - better - ups your odds. From hardware, to human software, handling to shooting, these lessons I learned the hard way may help you. Here's the third episode of the new, bi-weekly bonus programs doing a deep dive into single topics, inspirational stories, hunting adventures and special people. Delving deep, we philosophize about the value of hunting by yourself. Okay, with your dog, of course, but nobody else. Free, unencumbered, and a chance to explore your inner self. I'll weigh the advantages vs. the drawbacks and hope you agree it's a worthy path to follow sometimes. I'll also touch on a few practical aspects you'll want to consider if you go it alone. Are pricey bespoke guns worth their stratospheric prices? My friend and Field & Stream's shotgun editor Phil Bourjaily has an answer and he should know. He's been writing on the subject for decades and now we get the lowdown. Phil also shares what he looks for (and so should we) when buying any shotgun, the joys and limitations of heavy and light guns, grouse hunting with a Golden Retriever and Cocker Spaniel, and the real reason shotguns were originally engraved. We'll also cover Phil's hunting season, reminisce about some dogs, and get sound advice on hunting strategy. "Fix It" covers a way to dial down your dog's energy level to make training more productive, and listeners offer suggestions for our reading list in honor of World Book Day. Bob West is one of the legends in bird dog training, a writer, hunter, and all-around font of wisdom when it comes to hunting dogs. He joins me for reminiscences about what's changed in dog training, and how different today's trainers are from the old timers. Bob suggests what we should be doing differently in our own training, his choice for hardest birds to hunt, how dogs think, answers some specific questions about steadiness training and we venture down a rabbit hole on the topic of - what? - Chinese field trials (which, it turns out, were really Japanese bird-dog buyers in the 1980's). Bob also offers advice on bringing a new dog into the string: match your current dog's sex, or go opposite? "Fix It" offers a poor man's bird launcher, and listeners tell us what they're training right now. You get a chance to win a free day of private land hunting from LandTrust.com, value $150 in our furfeathersfriends.com sweepstakes, but only if you listen and know the Word of the Week. I've compiled a bunch of suggestions, ideas and advice from my own years as a road warrior that might help you this season. From booking travel and lodging to less-common ways to find savings on everything from fuel to access, I hope you'll find something of value (pun intended) on this podcast. You'll find her in the stratosphere chasing ptarmigan, and among the lava rock where chukars dwell. We'll talk about how she decides what gets into a magazine and why ... starting a new pup ... hunting two dogs as a brace and separately ... adventures of a TV host ... and re-live her hunting season together. Listeners share their thoughts on hunting a brace (or more!) of dogs simultaneously, and "Fix It" covers some reasons to take your training into the house. I've spent much of the last few seasons passing by my old standby hunting spots, instead visiting those intriguing, unexplored places that might hold bird hunting adventures. My friend Tom got me started, marking my online map like he does, with the Sasquatch icon for places that might be worth a detour. Sure, some don't pan out. Others are a bonanza of birds, dog work, scenery and exhilarating experiences. I'll take you through my rationale, strategy, and share some of my experiences as starting points for your own forays. "Fix It" gets your shotgun ready for next season, now. Listeners tell us how their dogs did this past season, and you get a last chance to enter to win a pair of Pyke Gear Dakota pants (value $230) in our furfeathersfriends.com sweepstakes, too, but only if you listen and know the Word of the Week. Two real professionals join me to share their bird seasons ... ups and downs, surprises and insights. Michael Salamone guides upland hunters in the deep woods of Colorado for forest grouse and will clue us into their mysteries. Bret Wonnacott is an author/writer and avid dog trainer and hunter. We talk chukars, dog development, including why we should think about NOT using an e-collar. "Fix It" does some spring cleaning on our phones, and listeners share their rationale for hunting public access ground with some surprising observations. Two hardcore hunters join me to share their seasons ... highs and lows, stellar dog work, insights and observations. Jim Millensifer has hunted 14 bird species (including snowcock!) and spends more time hunting than anybody I know. We'll talk Kansas, Arizona, North Dakota and who knows where the discussion will go - from mountain tops to desert plains. Jim offers tips on traveling, what helps the lightbulb go on in a younger dog (or more mature one for that matter), and recounts a "chicken chase" where the goal was one of every grouse species in the country. Steve "Grouseman" Grossman then offers an outfitter's perspective on the past few months, plus passionate observations on dog development and how weather affects bird populations. Steve also suggests something intriguing about dogs scenting birdy cover, as well as his practical tips and tactics. "Fix It" reminds everyone of a chore we often shelve during the off-season, and listeners as a whole sum up their season: epic, average or dismal ... find out where you fall in. You get a chance to enter to win a pair of Pyke Gear Dakota pants (value $230) in our furfeathersfriends.com sweepstakes, too, but only if you listen and know the Word of the Week. Buckle up for a first-hand report on a recent road trip in search of quail and chukars ... and better weather. We'll be hunting Nevada and California and learning a lot. Some astounding dog work and fascinating observations on bird behavior and habitat, especially in the Golden State. Strategies need adjusting in the high desert of California, where cactus is king and rattlesnakes roam all year ... even finding birdy places requires a different point of view. "Fix It" covers some practical pre-hunt tips and listeners share some fascinating dog and bird hunting trivia. You get a chance to enter to win a pair of Pyke Gear Dakota pants (value $230) in our furfeathersfriends.com sweepstakes, too, but only if you listen and know the Word of the Week. According to Garden & Gun magazine, he's one of the top five dog trainers in the South. His track record as a field trialer and hunter, proves it. Todd Agnew of Craney Hill Kennels takes us to spaniel school in this episode. Pointer fans take note: his views on dogs cross the divide, so get ready to learn as well. From teaching range for flushing dogs, to what motivates a hunting dog, Todd's point of view is a little different than many other trainers. He's big on creating the right relationship between a dog and its handler ... and how dynamic that relationship can be. He'll outline some new ways to look at everything from retrieving to when the dog takes charge in the field. And what the heck is "spaniel action?" "Fix it" keeps your dog dry, and listeners chime in on empty shotgun hulls left on the ground. You get a chance to enter to win the Sage & Braker shotgun cleaning mat in our furfeathersfriends.com sweepstakes, too, but only if you listen and know the Word of the Week. Either way, there are tips and observations, suggestions and hints from an uphill walk in Great Basin country. "Fix It" has a cold-weather shooting tip, and listeners share their artful dead bird photos. You get another chance to enter to win the Sage & Braker shotgun cleaning mat in our furfeathersfriends.com sweepstakes, too, but only if you listen and know the Word of the Week. If you have a young dog or are getting one, listen carefully! Jim Van Engen's Right Start Kennel has cranked out almost 200 field trial champions thanks to his unique specialty: the first two years of a dog's life. He'll outline his overall philosophy, as well as practical tips on everything from managing a dog's range to introducing gunfire. We'll cover retrieving and steadiness, verbal commands and e-collar use, too. Jim's specialty is Labradors, but he's owned shorthairs for decades, hunting them primarily for fun but also competing in NSTRA trials, so there's something for everyone in this episode. We'll review listeners' dog breed preferences from the Upland Nation Index survey, and "Fix It" offers a shooting tactic that might add a bird to your bag once in a while. You get a chance to enter to win the Sage & Braker shotgun cleaning mat in our furfeathersfriends.com sweepstakes, too, but only if you listen and know the Word of the Week. Finding more places to hunt just got a bit easier. I'll give you some starting points for your pheasant foray out west, or bobwhite hunting in the southeast. You'll also get insights on finding places and negotiating the walk-in bureaucratic maze. There are tips on information sources, scouting hints, and even some hunting stories. I've been to most of the places I'll talk about; reliable friends have been to the others, and they're all open to public hunting. "Fix It" has a warning about online mapping apps, you'll have a chance at the next Fur Feathers Friends prize if you listen and learn the Word of the Week. This month, it's a pair of the new Chad Hodges upland chokes from Trulock Chokes. And we'll dig into the Upland Nation Index survey, from favorite dog breeds to what you want help with next year. Break out a pen and paper and get ready to take copious notes. You will learn something. Trainer/handlers of the winningest field trial dog in history, George has been helping dogs excel in the field for decades. Author, video teacher, writer, hunter, his approach to dogs' learning abilities is built on a foundation of insights and perspective. We'll go from big-picture stuff like what truly motivates a dog (not what you think), to practical ways to steady a dog (again, not what you think). Whether you own a flusher or pointer, George has recommendations that will alter your thought process about dog training. Think you're using your e-collar right? Think again. Think your dog wants to please you? Uh-uh. "Fix it" offers a hack for those having trouble getting a young dog to "hold" on a retrieve ... we cover some of the survey issues you said were important from how to save our sport to how many of you spoil your dog during the holidays, and you have a chance to win great prizes in the Fur Feathers Friends initiative if you know the Word of the Week. Need a chukar fix? How about a few valley quail too? I'll debrief a recent hunt of mine ... sort of a bookend thing, with stunning dog work at both ends. We pull a few thousand feet of elevation, miss a few birds and connect on others. I'll talk terrain, habitat, strategy and tactics plus some pure dumb luck too. A fascinating find or two, as well. "Fix It" has a few theories on why birds scatter this time of year, and we'll take a sneak peek at the Upland Nation Index and your responses to the longest-running, largest private-sector survey of upland hunters. Favorite dog breed? What are the key issues you face? We'll take a look. You get a final chance to enter to win the Sage & Braker shotgun cleaning mat in our furfeathersfriends.com sweepstakes, too, but only if you listen and know the Word of the Week. It's literally a taste of your hunt, a chance to imbibe local culture and enjoy the hunt in a frosty (not too frosty) glass. Gulp down a heaping helping of bird hunting! From various beer styles to ingredients, buying, pouring, storing and sharing, I'll share what I've learned from talking with brewmasters, writing about beer, helping brew in commercial facilities and at home, and er, drinking a few pints here and there in bird hunting country. I'll list some craft brewpubs worth visiting in bird hunting country, too, along with hunting tips for each beery bird hunting town. Don't say I didn't get you anything for Christmas! Crosswind's Envy a Trip to the Train Station, call name "Rip," is the Dog of the Year for the National Shoot to Retrieve Association and while he didn't have much to say, his owner and handler offer plenty of help to fellow hunters in this episode. I'll get the inside scoop from Sara Thorne, Rip's owner, and handler Brandon Ralston. Getting to a lofty pinnacle in the field trial world yields benefits for owner, handler and dog that translate directly to bird hunting and we'll explore that intersection. From training tricks to conditioning advice, diet, strategy in the bird field and trial course, Brandon and Sara will share the hard-won tips that put Rip at the top of the heap. We'll also answer the question: can a trial dog also be a bird hunter? "Handle It" is now "Fix It," and this week there's a shooting tip for you. Listeners share their Christmas wish list - and their dog's too. And we launch the 2025 edition of our Fur Feathers Friends tradition with some early prizes if you listen and enter with our Word of the Week. Prizes and entry information here. If you're like me, the um, standard of excellence you expect from your dog (and he from you) has devolved since opening day. That got me thinking: why can't we train our dogs during a hunt, or a hunting season? Well, you can. You may not do as much, or as frequently, but there are a ton of things you can do to help your dog stay on his "A" game during a hunt. I'll offer some suggestions. I'll also get a bunch of related observations and suggestions off my chest that might help you finish the hunting season on a high note. Simple stuff, things you haven't thought about for a while, or never knew. "Handle It" might help your dog avoid a broken toe; and we find out who does and doesn't wear eye and ear protection in the field. Talmage Smedly joins me for an in-depth conversation on why dogs do what they do and how we can guide them. He calls on his horse training experience as well as a different perspective on how e-collars and commands in general can be used. If you're looking for a new way of working with your dog, he's got it. We'll cover his views on how to use an e-collar, what instincts shape a young dog, using a leash and checkcord, and the advantages of "positive punishment," among other things. He'll help us fix some of our steadiness and retrieving problems too. Listener Keith Friel offers another reason to run two dogs together in the field, and "Handle It" is a plea for more leashes, tie-out stakes and crates. He's been an Orvis-endorsed outfitters for over 30 years chasing ruffies, duskies, blues, sooties ... or whatever they're calling the critters these days. He'll share strategies, including how to start a hunt; tactics when a dog points; shooting advice and habitat types for each species. We also share stories on the joys of bird hunting from good shots to young dogs, and the real reasons we hunt. Great tips from a couple listeners on dog emergencies and how to avoid them; "Handle It" covers a question from Neil Higgins of Minnesota on a young dog's steadiness. Join my friends Dave and Tom on our somewhat-annual gathering in the desert of southeast Oregon for the chukar and valley quail season opener. In what's become an informal reunion of new and old friends we reminisce on old dogs, an epic opening weekend, some foibles and incredible hunting. Trigger warning: there's a lot of philosophizing, too. But somewhere among the joking and joshing are lessons on why we hunt, what dogs do to us - and for us - and even a tip or two. Well I've compiled a pile of suggestions and observations that might help, especially if you're hunting walk-in and public ground. Often, being a bit sneakier, subtle and deliberate will get you closer to a better shot. From pre-hunt preparation to approaching a dog on point, here are 30 or so things I've learned the hard way so you don't have to. From introducing gun fire, to introducing birds to a pup, what chukars really eat and where they go, to introducing an electronic training collar the right way, he's got things figured out. Tim also has some hard-won advice on getting a dog in the "Handle It" segment, and listeners offer tips on what to bring in your truck on a hunting trip. A shooting tip from TV's worst shotgunner!
Bottle & Mic ... first in a series of road trip debriefs, reflections on a trip I'm on with observations, suggestions, and ruminations fueled by a wee dram or two. This bonus episode comes from Lincoln, Montana enroute home from a sharptailed grouse hunt that included weather challenges, practical hunting magic, dog stories, and a lot of appreciation for rural America and the people we meet along the way. Now, pour another one and pass that bottle please. I hope it never happens to you - that eerie silence when you hoped to hear collar tags jingling, knowing your dog is well and truly lost. Or, he limps back, bleeding. As the season gets into full swing, what better than to prepare for each of these situations? I'll offer a four-step strategy for finding your dog, from preparation to gear, to starting your search. There may be something there that will help you, based on my own experiences over the years. Then, what's in my dog-care kit? I'll cover the stuff I carry in my vest that will help him continue to hunt, or stabilize him for a trip to the veterinarian. It's a simple, basic set of tools that'll take care of most in-field emergencies, from cactus spines to bee stings and barbed-wire cuts. "Handle It" is all about fueling your four-footed hunting buddy - what works for me and why (I think!). Maybe there's something in it for you and your dog. Champion target shooter and avid bird hunter Dave Fiedler of Mid-Valley Clays and Shooting School joins me for a wide-ranging and fun conversation about all things shotguns and wingshooting. From ballistics to buying a new shotgun, what we could do better in the field to the funnest target game, we've got the um, "field" covered. We also talk about the right gauge for the right bird at the right time of year, and the most important thing to do to your shotgun at the end of a hunt. In our "Handle It" segment I answer Eric Thompson's question about bringing on the next generation of hunters. You might be surprised at the 800-lb. gorilla in the room that I poke with a stick. I'm television's worst shotgunner. It's almost a badge of honor. The most frequent compliment I hear is “You shoot worse than I do!” I gladly own it. That's where these tips come in. They started as a sort of log – a journal – of things I've learned while hunting, at the range, and even dry-firing at home. Often, they were last-ditch efforts when everything else failed. Or, epiphanies from out of nowhere that saved the day. They're no substitute for a good course of study, a shooting lesson, or careful practice. But when nothing else works or you're ready to try a different way of looking at things, use one (or more) of these. "Handle It" this week answers Jim Smith's question on the vocabulary of a training collar's "other" functions, and listeners offer up less-common things they carry in their vest. And it's all brought to you by: Sage & Braker Mercantile, LandTrust.com, HiVizSights.com, Pointer shotguns, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, MidwayUSA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com. Down to brass tacks we go with writer, editor, publisher Jim Matthews. He's been helping desert hunters find publicly-accessible game birds since the nineties, and he'll dial us in to finding some of the spots, strategies and tactics we need for valley and Gambel's quail, chukars, and the occasional mountain quail. Jim will take us from habits to habitat, what to look for when scouting (we could all do more of this, he says), and where to look when a place is "shot out." Jim also keys us to his four-step bird-finding formula, how rain, snow, wind, cold and heat affect bird hunting, and suggests a couple pieces of gear most of us don't carry but should. "Handle It" helps Jon Schwedler slow down his setter and use her nose better; and listeners share the length of their hunting trips - see where you stand! Are you ready yet? Listen carefully to what I'm carrying this season in my hunting vest and you may change your answer. I've re-configured and loaded new gear into the ultimate western hunter's strap vest ... anything that might help keep you safe, your dog productive, and help you shoot better. Oh, and bail out your hunting buddy, too. From getting found, to caring for Fido, to route finding and first aid, here's the stuff you, I and our friends have decided is worth the weight. There's a right way and a wrong way to wear it, too, so I'll touch on that as well. Listeners tell us where they're going on the opener ... "old favorite" or new spot. And "Handle It" is about your pre-hunt ritual.
