Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Alexandra Osteen, daughter of Joel and Victoria Osteen and Worship Director at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. Lynyrd Skynyrd was a success with their debut album, and continued to build a fan base when they opened for The Who on their Quadrophenia tour. Many of the songs on their debut album were staples of their concerts in Jacksonville, Florida, where they had built their style over the years since the 60's. Therefore it was not a sure thing that they would be able to sustain their success over time. Those concerns were put to rest when they released their second album.Second Helping, a southern colloquialism for getting more of the same thing at the dinner table, cemented Lynyrd Skynyrd as the flag bearer for the Southern Rock genre. At a time when a number of British artists - most notably the Rolling Stones - were digging into the rock and blues music of the American South, Lynyrd Skynyrd was the real thing. They rode the power of their triple guitar set and the wit of Ronnie Van Zandt's lyrics to a commercial success, with the album going to number 12 on the Billboard 200 chart and certified as gold by September 1974. While contemporary critics were more lukewarm, those reviews have been revised way upward over time. Second Helping also contains the biggest hit of the group as well, the Southern anthem "Sweet Home Alabama."Lynyrd Skynyrd would go on to produce many more hit songs and records in the southern rock genre before tragedy took front man Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines in October 1977. But Second Helping is the album that solidified their standing as an internationally successful band.Wayne takes us through this album for this week's podcast, and Brian Dickhute joins us in Bruce's absence. The Needle and the SpoonThis song would not be the only anti-drug track in the Skynyrd discography. The lyrics describe a man coming out of rehab, and makes use of a wah wah pedal effect that was not common to most of Skynyrd's music, but fit with the heroin subject of the song. Swamp MusicAlthough not released as a single, this song got plenty of air play on FM radio, as did most of the tracks on this album. This fast -paced track describes life in the Florida swamps. The members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were well acquainted with outdoor life, fishing for catfish, hunting, and other "redneck" activities.Sweet Home AlabamaEveryone knows this anthem of Southern rock. This song was written in response to Neil Young's "Southern Man," in which the band felt like the entire Southern United States was blamed for slavery. Between the hook of the leading riff and the catchy lyrics, this song has become a staple of classic rock. This is Skynyrd's only top 10 hit, as it went to number 8 on the US charts. Interestingly, none of the band members are from Alabama.Don't Ask Me No QuestionsGary Rossington and Ronnie Van Zandt wrote this song during a fishing trip. Many think this is about a relationship, but it was a message to the record managers who were apathetic towards the band during the early days, but who turned demanding after they were a success. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Main theme from the television series, "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C."In this sitcom spin-off from "The Andy Griffith Show," Jim Nabors plays the lovable but naive Gomer Pyle, now enlisted into the Marine Corp. Frank Sutton, who played Sergent Carter in this series, passed away in June 1974. STAFF PICKS:Help Me by Joni MitchellRob starts the staff picks with a single from Mitchell's sixth studio album, "Court and Spark." This track is Mitchell's biggest single, and her only song to crack the top 10 in the US, going to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics describe a singer who knows she is falling for the wrong man, but is either powerless to stop it or doesn't want to call things off.Dancing Machine by the Jackson 5Brian brings us a song that hit number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 after a multi-year dry spell. The Jackson 5 appeared on "Soul Train" performing this song, and Michael Jackson introduced the world to "the robot" dance routine. The Jackson 5 had a Saturday morning cartoon which kept the group in the public conscious.Waterloo by ABBALynch features the song that made ABBA a household name when the Swedish group won the 1974 Eurovision Song contest singing this tune. The lyrics compare falling in love to Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. The name "ABBA" comes from the first letter of each of the singers' names.Tell Me Something Good by RufusWayne presents a funky song from a group featuring Chaka Kahn as lead vocalist. Rufus is a one-hit wonder, with this song peaking at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Stevie Wonder wrote this song about a woman looking for a deeper relationship, not just a one night stand. It was the first hit song that utilized the vocoder. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Dance with the Devil by Cozy PowellWe close out with a drum instrumental based on Jimi Hendrix' "Third Stone from the Sun." The Van Zant musical dynasty built its foundation firmly on family. Donnie Van Zant co-founded .38 Special and brother Johnny Van Zant is the current lead vocalist for Lynyrd Skynyrd after the passing of their brother Ronnie Van Zant, who fronted and co-founded the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rock band. But throughout their four decades of climbing the southern rock and country charts together and separately, faith has stayed just as important of a factor in the equation, so much so that the guys decided to finally share their inspirational side with the upcoming new album. “This has been on our bucket list for quite some time to do a gospel record,” says Donnie of the sessions that started during the pandemic. “We're both big believers in Jesus Christ, so that's really how it started.” In spite of their enormous successes, much of what makes Van Zant so relatable is the fact they'll be the first to admit their flaws and struggles. Southern rock icons Van Zant have reunited and released their first new album in nearly two decades. In which The Curmudgeons discuss the awesome power and influence of one of the innovators of the Southern thing, as The Drive-By Truckers refer to it. Lynyrd Skynyrd remains one of the most underrated rock bands of all time, a condition that is partially its own fault, given how it has tied itself in its most recent form to the worst of old Southern stereotypes. But there's no denying that the band's patented three-guitar assault, soulful songwriting and penchant for being the thinking man's rednecks produced a sterling catalog of work during the 1970s. We revisit the five albums of the Ronnie Van Zant era during this episode and place the band in a well-deserved, warm, positive spotlight. Lori Tucker-Sullivan is a first-time guest. She's the author of the new book I Can't Remember If I Cried: Rock Widows on Life, Love, and Legacy. The stories of rock musicians who die young are the thing of lore and legend. Accidents, drug overdoses, plane crashes—all have taken the lives of male rock stars still in their primes. But what became of their widowed brides? How did they survive a loss so great? What is it like to have to share your grief with millions of strangers? And where are these widows today? I Can't Remember if I Cried is part music history, part memoir, based around interviews with rock widows conducted by Lori —who herself lost her husband in 2010. With each widow that Lori interviews, she learns lessons in love, forgiveness, coping, and moving on. The book is framed by the author's own narrative to create a single thread that links the stories together to ultimately create a tale of how the author's life is changed through her interactions with these amazing women. Among the women profiled in the book are:Judy Van Zant who, after losing husband Ronnie of Lynyrd Skynyrd, sued the re-formed band in order to protect her interests.Sandy Chapin, widow of Harry Chapin, who has worked tirelessly to uphold Harry's significant legacy around activism and hunger prevention.Crystal Zevon, the ex-wife of Warren Zevon, who provides details of her abusive relationship with Warren and how she resolved her anger and grief.Jamie Weiland, widow of Stone Temple Pilots' Scott Weiland, speaking openly of Scott's mental health, which at times kept him housebound for days.Janna Leblanc, girlfriend of Stevie Ray Vaughan, who shares the details of her visits with Stevie in rehab.Gloria Jones, the girlfriend of T. Rex's Marc Bolan who was driving the car which crashed and took Marc's life.Anna Walter-Lax, girlfriend of Who drummer Keith MoonLori shares with us some of what these women shared with her for the book and how her life has been changed as a result of writing this book.Purchase a copy of I Can't Remember If I Cried: Rock Widows on Life, Love, and LegacyVisit Lori-Tucker Sullivan's websiteFollow Lori on Instagram---------- BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribe

This week Capt. Content reminds us that something unique happened in the 90s with “Classic Rock” radio where they completely omitted any new contributions musically from the bands. In the 90's, the “Legacy Act” tag hadn't hit yet and bands were still trying to be true to themselves, but still be relevant. We're playing the Lost and Forgotten songs released during the Alternative Rock era from bands that we all know and love. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Many of the classic 60s-70s bands were still writing and delivering new musical content into the 90s. Go and check out these songs and the albums that they come from! "This project has been a year in the making, but when the fans hear it they will understand why it took so long," says Len Snow, Get Joe Records president. Making his live debut at Jacksonville's Sgt Pepper's Club in October 1974, Pyle assumed the role of Skynyrd's drummer following the release of Second Helping, contributing to the band's subsequent four albums, including the legendary Street Survivors. Pyle survived the band's tragic 1977 plane crash that took six lives, including Steve and Cassie Gaines, along with the band's leader, Ronnie Van Zant."This project has been a year in the making, but when the fans hear it they will understand why it took so long," says Len Snow, Get Joe Records president. "Artimus is legendary within the Southern Rock space. The music that Lynyrd Skynyrd made will always live as a part of rock history. This album honors that music and gives Artimus a way to honor his former bandmates." He would replace their original drummer (Bob Burns) following the release of the group's second album, Second Helping, and performed with the band and on Skynyrd's subsequent four albums,Nuthin' Fancy, Gimme Back My Bullets, Street Survivors, and their live album, One More for the Road. Pyle was injured but survived the band's 1977 horrific plane crash that abruptly ended the lives of six people, including band members Steve and Cassie Gaines, and most notably, frontman and musical visionary Ronnie Van Zant.In 1979, the band began to reunite, first for the 5th Annual Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam, and eventually, as the Rossington Collins Band (which included all the remaining band members and Pyle, plus Dale Krantz on lead vocals and Barry Lee Harwood on guitar). However, shortly after that, Pyle was in a car accident that broke his leg in 21 places and shattered his hopes of remaining with the group. Pyle spent the next three years healing, both physically and emotionally, before returning to the States and establishing the Artimus Pyle Band (A.P.B.) to honor the music and legacy of Ronnie Van Zant.In 1987, Pyle rejoined his former bandmates to tour and eventually record as Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991, but the experience left him flat. While he deeply loved them, he no longer felt the magic he once did with Van Zant at the helm, nor was he interested in returning to the party lifestyle for which the band was known and stepped away from the group permanently, only to return in 2006 during Lynyrd Skynyrd's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (where he played alongside Bob Burns). Now in his 70s, Pyle still continues to honor Van Zant's musical legacy, recording and touring with the Artimus Pyle Band, now comprised of Pyle (drums), Scott Raines (guitar/vocals), Jerry Lyda (guitar) Brad Durden (keyboards/vocals), and Dave Fowler (bass).https://artimuspyleband.com/https://www.amazon.com/Anthems-Honoring-Music-Lynyrd-Skynyrd/dp/B0CKH9X2WHBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.
This is the interview as heard on the Dial and Deal show on WWAG 107.9fm. Artimus has had a full life in the music industry and shows no signs of quitting anytime soon! In the year of 1974 he was recommended by the legendary Charlie Daniels to the band Lynyrd Skynyrd to take the spot of the original drummer Bob Burns, due to health reasons. Artimus tells the story of his father being killed in a plane crash and after he signed the wrongful death papers on his dad, he put his last dollar in gas to go record the song Saturday Night Special. Many stories are shared in this episode and some were really emotional. The plane crash that took the lives of band members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, and road manager Dean Kilpatrick has had a big impact on the music scene since that day October 20, 1977. The latest project that Artimus is working on is titled Anthems: Honoring the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd it is a collaboration of the Artimus Pyle Band (A.P.B.) featuring several big name stars in the music industry. Dolly Parton, Sammy Hagar, Marty Raybon, Ronnie Dunn, and Jarrod Niemann, just to name a few! It has been put together with labor and love from the folks at Get Joe Records. Lone Star Skynyrd is the award-winning tribute to rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd. Based in Dallas / Ft Worth, TX, they travel all over the country keeping the southern fried power of Ronnie Van Zant alive.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of America's southern rock sweethearts. Anthems like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" cement their place in rock n roll history. But a gruesome fate would befall the band when the plane they were charting during their tour in 1977 would claim the lives of their lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, and others in the swamplands of Mississippi. Today, we talk about their rise to fame and what caused the horrific plane crash, plus the aftermath. If you are my age or older, you probably grew up on Lynyrd Skynyrd. The southern rockers have put out their own whiskey and were nice enough to send it over.Hell House was named after the cabin where the band's original members, Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins and their bandmates spent time making music day and night for Lynyrd Skynyrd's devout fanbase. The band is led by Johnny Van Zant after his big brother, Ronnie Van Zant, died in a plane crash in 1977. Johnny is the driving force behind creating this whiskey with Bespoken Spirits. Will this whiskey be as big of a hit as some of their greatest songs? Let's find out together! On October 19, 1977, Lynyrd Skynyrd was inarguably the greatest rock band touring the USA and played what was their final concert in Greenville, South Carolina. While enroute to Baton Rouge on October 20th, their plane crashed in the remote southwest Mississippi woodlands, killing 6 passengers to include frontman Ronny Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup vocalist Cassie Gaines. Decades later, their classic southern rock ballads are remembered worldwide - and everyone has a favorite Skynyrd song! Lee Kjos describes why Skynyrd remains his all-time favorite band. We then visit personally with Ronnie Van Zant's childhood friend and bodyguard, Gene Odom, and several Amite County, Mississippi locals who first responded to the crash. What was growing up in Jacksonville like for Ronnie Van Zant? How'd they develop their band name, what events inspired their lyrics, and what was it like touring with them? What kind of guy was Ronnie Van Zant and how would he likely have wanted to be remembered? What do first responders most remember about that day? What compelled them to privately fund and to recently construct a beautiful Lynyrd Skynyrd Monument nearby? Having met these guests and heard their stories, what's Ramsey's final take on it? All of these questions and some incredible never-before-told anecdotes in today's very special from-the-vault episode of Duck Season Somewhere. "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" Lynyrd Skynyrd emerged from Jacksonville, Florida and became titans of the Southern Rock scene. Battling their way up from adversity, the rowdy & rough-and-tumble bunch finally signed with MCA and released their debut album Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd in August of 1973. It went double platinum and saw them open The Who's Quadrophenia Tour which helped them get exposure to a larger audience. It was the foundation for the bands epic run of success until a horrible tragedy in 1977 derailed the bands trajectory and the lives of the members. Ronnie Van Zant may not have been the most talented singer in the world but he was a menacing front man who doesn't get the credit he deserves for his poignant lyrics that everyone can relate to. Though the band would eventually be known for their 3 guitar attack, Ed King would play bass on this album before Leon Wilkeson rejoined the band in 1973 and then Ed fell in with fellow gunslingers Allen Collins and Gary Rossington. Ed even helped write a song at the end of sessions for the first album which would wind up on Second Helping and would become the biggest hit they ever had, Sweet Home Alabama. Lynyrd Skynyrd's lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant, was a violent bully from the mean streets of Jacksonville, Florida. He tried to maim one of his guitar player's hands with a broken bottle. He knocked out his piano player's teeth not once…but twice. He held a gun to his drummer's head during rehearsal. And when his bandmates followed suit with their own debauched antics, Ronnie turned their drug-and-alcohol flirtations with death into hit songs. Lynyrd Skynyrd even wrote their own eulogy. We answer listener questions including: what first made Al focus on Ronnie Van Zant, about playing keyboards for Skynyrd, performing as his own act versus being in a festival, and about the passing of Mike Bloomfield. After each segment Nilly the Dog adds a brief comment of her own.
Pardon my allergies; I've sounded kind of rough for a week or so. There was a lot of throat-clearing to edit out of this one. I can't even blame the Southern Studio on this one; it's the direct result of spending too much time cutting the grass at home. (And THEN I can blame the Southern Studio a little bit, because I went there the next day and it certainly didn't help matters.) How does one spend too much time cutting the grass? By having an electric mower and starting the job with a battery that isn't fully charged, that's how. This is an episode topic I've wanted to return to for a long time, but for some reason I kept procrastinating. But way, way back in Episode 11, I featured a bunch of songs that had mistakes in them which were discovered before the final product was released, but they decided they liked it better that way and ran with it. And today we return to that well for another dip. The tough part with songs like this is curating the best ones to use. Led Zeppelin often left in stray noises because they didn't really care (ringing phones), or because they were actually counting on it (squeaky pedal on Bonham's drum kit). So finding one that was both inadvertent and improved the recording? Absolute Gold, Jerry. Similarly, The Beatles would make an error in rehearsal or elsewhere and decide that that was something they needed to retain/reproduce (e.g. the wine bottle rattling at the end of "Long Long Long"), so those weren't really good candidates. And, of course, you run into a story which is just plain wrong. Yes, Ronnie Van Zant was talking to the board operator when he said "turn it up" while recording"Sweet Home Alabama," but he did not mourn the loss of doughnuts near the end. (What you're hearing is, "Montgomery's got the answer.") At any rate, I finally buckled down and did the necessary research, and I hope you have fun with this one as much as I did. Incidentally, a big shout-out to the newest member of our Wall of Fame. Everyone say hello to Cousin Robert! If you want to join the family, you can click here to become a Patron of the show. RockerMike and Rob discuss Lynyrd Skynyrd Lynyrd Skynyrd (/ˌlɛnərd ˈskɪnərd/ LEN-ərd SKIN-ərd) is an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida. The group originally formed as My Backyard in 1964 and comprised Ronnie Van Zant (lead vocalist), Gary Rossington (guitar), Allen Collins (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass guitar) and Bob Burns (drums). The band spent five years touring small venues under various names and with several lineup changes before deciding on "Lynyrd Skynyrd" in 1969. The band released its first album in 1973, having settled on a lineup that included bassist Leon Wilkeson, keyboardist Billy Powell and guitarist Ed King. Burns left and was replaced by Artimus Pyle in 1974. King left in 1975 and was replaced by Steve Gaines in 1976. At the height of their fame in the 1970s, the band popularized the Southern rock genre with songs such as "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird". After releasing five studio albums and one live album, the band's career was abruptly halted on October 20, 1977, when their chartered airplane crashed, killing Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines, and seriously injuring the rest of the band. https://lynyrdskynyrd.com/ https://m.facebook.com/LynyrdSkynyrd https://open.spotify.com/artist/4MVyzYMgTwdP7Z49wAZHx0 https://www.rockhall.com/inductees/lynyrd-skynyrd https://www.rollingstone.com/feature/remembering-lynyrd-skynyrds-deadly-1977-plane-crash-2-195371/amp/ https://mobile.twitter.com/skynyrd?lang=en https://www.instagram.com/skynyrd/?hl=en #musicvideo #musicstudio #musiclover #musiclife #musicindustry #musiclovers #musiccover #musician #LynyrdSkynyrd #musicproducer #musicproduction #musicians #musicislife #musicartist #musicphotography #musicvideos #Music #Punk #drummer #Guitar @drummers @spotify @twitter @LynyrdSkynyrd Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ https://app.hashtag.expert/?fpr=roberto-rossi80 https://dc2bfnt-peyeewd4slt50d2x1b.hop.clickbank.net Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-lumped-up-with-rob-rossi/id1448899708 https://open.spotify.com/show/00ZWLZaYqQlJji1QSoEz7a https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support
