Lisa’s not your typical financial coach- she’s not only interested in making sense of her client’s money, but also exploring their individual psychology to money. We started with the story of how a woman managed to lose a million dollars and an expensive coin collection to the men in her life. How does that even happen? Well, childhood traumas around money and romantic relationships are to blame of course. We hope that this episode will inspire you to look inward to your own beliefs about money and relationships. How are old stories from your childhood continuing to influence your choices today? If you enjoy the episode, please subscribe to In Love and Money in your favorite podcast app, such as Apple Podcasts or Spotify, so you’ll be notified as soon as we release new episodes! Wright State University students and alumni are welcome to attend the fourth Suit-Up event at two area JCPenney stores on Feb. 23. The Fairfield Commons Mall and the Miami Valley Mall in Piqua will welcome Wright State students looking for deals on professional attire. The event is designed to help students and alumni prepare for job and graduate school interviews, career networking events and both the Lake Campus Career, Internship and Networking Expo on March 16 and the Wright State Career Fair on March 17. This will be the first time that the Piqua location has participated. “This is great not only for Lake Campus students but for Wright State students that might live north of Dayton,” said Lisa Duke, assistant director of Career Services. The Suit-Up event is closed to the public but is open to any Wright State student and alumni in need of professional career apparel. Last spring, more than 155 students participated in the event. The event runs from 6 to 8 P.M. Each student who attends will receive a 30% off coupon for career-related clothing, such as suits, dresses, sport coats, dress pants, shoes and accessories. Both locations will have Wright State and JCPenney associates on hand to assist shoppers. “This is a great partnership between Wright State’s Career Services, Student Involvement and Leadership and the JCPenney Corporation,” said Duke.

Lisa shares her entrepreneurial journey and how it has led her to improve herself.  Taking action and improving yourself leads to business and personal success.    Take away: Take action and improve constantly.   Action step: Pick up the phone and reach out to people.    Money Learnings: School didn't teach Lisa about money. Her parents modeled good money behaviors but didn't talk to Lisa about money. She didn't know her parents were saving money.   Bio: Lisa Duke began her career in Georgia’s growing Financial Technology (FinTech) industry, working as a subject matter expert on automated credit evaluation and credit bureau reporting systems. Wanting more freedom that she had in corporate America, she joined a network marketing company to train, motivate, and mentor female entrepreneurs.  She rose to the top 2% of the organization and earned the use of two company vehicles.     In 2005 she joined her husband, Darren Duke, to lead the sales and marketing efforts for Simplified Technology Solutions, an IT consulting firm.  As a result of running that business and investing they became self-made millionaires.   Now Lisa is working to help others follow the same path toward financial freedom. Ms. Duke has passed the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education® (AFCPE®)’s exam to become an Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC®) and is also pursuing that organization’s designation to become a Financial Fitness Coach (FFC®).     Ms. Duke is a member of the Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) movement and is a backer for the Playing with FIRE documentary.     Highlights from this episode: Link to episode page Lisa starts having conversations about money with her parents. The changing conversations about work and money through the generations. The Entrepreneurial Journey. The connection between money and happiness. The behaviors of sales success. Chasing shiny objects. Logic doesn't drive behaviors. Profit gives you choices. The reality of MLM The problem in your life is usually you. Take action, it's the greatest teacher. If you have never taken a trip to Wright State’s Career Center, located on the third floor of the Student Union, it’s OK, they’re coming to you instead. The Career Center staff created a mobile adviser booth out of a cardboard refrigerator box and modeled after Lucy’s advice booth from the Charlie Brown comics. The Career Center box is placed in high traffic areas like the Union Market and the Student Union Atrium. Students do not need an appointment to ask advisers career questions and it’s free. Advisers are prepared to discuss Career Fair prep, such as resume feedback, rehearse 30-second introductions and future employer research. The box will be in 163 Student Union during the spring Career Fair on Wednesday March 15. “We want to help the students be comfortable for the event,” said Lisa Duke, career services assistant director.
