Josh and Emily discuss the third chapter of the Financial Counseling textbook, The Practice of Financial Counseling. Top takeaways: Relationship building is key. There's a fine line between being supportive and being an enabler. Make sure you set boundaries around what you can and cannot do for clients. It's important to leave space for clients to suggest their own ideas. The more time you spend listening, the better you're able to help your clients. Financial Coaches Network - The Podcast: Build your Financial Coaching Business
Josh and Amelie discuss the second chapter of the Financial Counseling textbook by Durband, Law, and Mazzolini. Top takeaways: Financial knowledge is very baseline (what is a savings account). Financial literacy is the understanding of how to apply the knowledge. Financial literacy only really works when you're teaching people about things that are directly relevant to their lives at that point in time. Financial capability is the ability to actually implement the knowledge. Financial ratios are great, but many guidelines are situation-specific. It's important to be aware of potential scams to help your clients protect themselves. Be aware of the topics (taxes, insurance, investing, estate planning, etc.) that bring higher liability and may be legally regulated as far as what you are and are not allowed to discuss. Make sure you do some kind of continuing ed to stay on top of research, methods, scams, etc. Want help building or growing a successful financial coaching business? Financial Coaches Network - The Podcast: Build your Financial Coaching Business
Josh and Amelie discuss the first chapter of the Financial Counseling textbook by Durband, Law, and Mazzolini. Top takeaways: Many AFCs work on military bases, in non-profits, or in private practice, but there are also opportunities in banks, schools, hospitals, and more. For one-time engagements, technology isn't as important, but for longer-term engagements, most clients are going to expect some kind of budgeting technology. Counselors should be careful about building codependent, ongoing relationships with clients. Building relationships with other professionals is important so you can refer out. Welcome to the fourth and final episode of our Veteran-Focused mini-series in celebration of Veteran Saves Week! Today, we're discussing one of the biggest challenges veterans face in transitioning to civilian life—moving from military service to civilian employment. Amelia and Krystel guide you through essential financial steps, covering topics like budgeting for relocation, using the GI Bill for career advancement, understanding civilian benefits, and building financial confidence along the way. This episode is sponsored by Walmart, whose ongoing support of veterans and their families through career pathways and advancement opportunities aligns perfectly with the mission of Veteran Saves. In this episode, we discusss: Relocation Expenses: Moving from military life to civilian life often brings new expenses, including housing deposits, transportation, and work-related costs. Tip: Track your spending by gathering recent pay stubs, bank statements, and bills to create a budget and spending plan that addresses upcoming relocation needs. Setting Financial Goals: Establishing both short- and long-term goals, such as an emergency fund or saving for certifications, can make the transition more manageable. Leveraging the GI Bill: Beyond traditional schooling, the GI Bill also covers certifications, technical training, and apprenticeships. Many apprenticeships allow veterans to earn an income while learning, which can be especially helpful during the transition to civilian life. Understanding Civilian Benefits: Civilian compensation packages differ from military pay, and veterans should review their base salary, health benefits, and retirement options like 401(k) matching to understand their full package. Veterans with a Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) may consider rolling it into a 401(k) or IRA for continued retirement savings growth. Save or Skip Segment: Scenario: A $1,000 relocation bonus—save it for moving expenses or invest in a career certification? Amelia and Crystal share their thoughts, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing relocation while exploring employer support for certifications. Financial Counseling for Veterans: Organizations like the Veterans Benefits Banking Program and the Foundation for Financial Planning provide free financial counseling tailored to veterans, offering guidance on unique financial challenges. Resources & Links Mentioned: Veteran Saves Pledge Create a Spending & Savins Plan VBBP Free Financial Counseling & Coaching How Walmart Helps Veterans Thrive Transitioning to civilian life is a significant change, but with a solid financial plan, veterans can navigate this journey smoothly. We're here to support you every step of the way, and special thanks to Walmart for their partnership and commitment to the veteran community.

Building on episodes 102, 103, and 104, we continue to explore the deep impact of these challenges. We begin by examining the need to address both individual and systemic factors, emphasizing the importance of cultural shifts within medical environments and advocating for meaningful systems change. As the episode concludes, our experts highlight actionable steps medical schools can take to better support mental health, including fostering open dialogue, ensuring accessible resources, and creating a culture of vulnerability. In memory of Dr. Jack Rudell, we close with a piece of his music—a poignant reminder of the personal nature of this issue and the critical need to keep every trainee's light shining. Description of Series DWDI Special Series: Suicidality in Medical Training dives into the critical conversations around mental health, well-being, support systems, and the intense pressures faced during medical training. Through the power of storytelling, the series intertwines these broader themes with the deeply personal story of Dr. Jack Ruddell, a promising medical student who tragically died by suicide. Jack's journey—his strengths, struggles, and the complexities leading to his untimely death—forms the emotional core of this five-part series, giving voice to the loved ones often excluded from these conversations. Alongside Jack's story, the series incorporates expert insights and data from the literature, offering a human perspective on burnout, depression, and suicide among medical trainees. With a commitment to improving mental health awareness and reducing the stigma around seeking help, the series presents a novel approach by centering personal narratives alongside expert analysis. It also explores actionable strategies for improving medical training environments and highlights the importance of institutional responses after a loss by suicide. Our mission is to reduce shame, encourage help-seeking among medical students struggling with depression, and ensure that every medical school is aware of the postvention resources offered by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).
