TIP: Top Academics punches your ticket to the dance. Impact Leadership gets you admitted. TALE: When you take a look at the March Madness brackets for the NCAA Men's and Women's tournament, you learn that they ALL have winning records. These are the AQs: Academic Qualities. They are the best in their athletic conference, be it Pac 12, Big 10, Atlantic 10, Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Big East, etc. Their stats and overall winning records earned them a ticket to the “dance.” Was it a fluke that #13 seed Yale Men's team beat #4 seed Auburn? Or that #14 seed Oakland Men's team beat #3 seed Kentucky (with 8 National titles)? How about my Lady Trojans headed to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 30 years and will face the Baylor Bears who have 3 national titles under their belt? NO. These are the best teams around the country, and each comes with the “goods” of what it takes to win. So what is the difference? How a team shows leadership, endurance, and teamwork throughout the game is critical. Their preparation, work ethic, dedication, commitment, and longevity are paramount. The intangibles such as, passion, grit, belief, and how a team succeeds under pressure and adversity, are without a doubt instrumental to winning any game. These are the PQs, Personal Qualities of a team. TRUTH: When applying to college, every student shows up with the same “numbers,” high school GPA, test scores, and a transcript to show the rigor of the courses you chose. These “stats” are YOUR AQs. So what makes you stand out? Well, today is your lucky day! Like Coach Wooden had his Pyramid of Success, well, I have Dr. C's Hierarchy of Co-curricular Involvement. School Strategies for Encouraging Civic Engagement & VolunteerismYouth civic engagement and volunteerism are critical components of building and sustaining strong and vibrant communities. Participating in these activities helps us feel a sense of ownership, responsibility, and pride in the places where we live and work. Engaging today's students in volunteerism and civic action can be a significant challenge, particularly given the numerous distractions and pressures that exist in their daily lives. As we look at the challenges of engaging younger demographics, some of the most significant obstacles we face are structural— but not insurmountable! To address issues of access, inclusion, resource limitations, and awareness that keep youth voting participation low and national rates of volunteerism falling, we must guarantee that the support structures we build around civic activity are designed to help students tackle real problems in their communities and experience the impact of their efforts.Sources & Resources:Key ClubScienceDirect - Promoting civic and political engagement among marginalized urban youth in three cities: Strategies and challenges by Brady, Chaskin, and McGregorUniversity of Maryland - School of Public Policy - Where Are America's Volunteers by Dietz and GrimmEducation Week - Volunteerism Declined Among Young People by Sarah D. The Higher Education Ministry has drafted a new guideline under the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (UUCA) to regulate students who are involved in politics on and off campus. First, we look at what this means and whether it gives universities too much power over students and their right to be politically active. Then, with UNDI 18 in play, what does this say about our willingness to have younger voices in politics? We discuss.Image Source: Samsul Said, Shutterstock
The education system was hit hard during the initial stages of the COVID lockdowns but managed to bounce back fast through digital engagements. It was especially difficult for engineering students who require a lot of practical classes and collaboration with peers. However, even as people get back to their classrooms, some of the innovative digital solutions that came from remote learning are continuing to play a big role.Another phenomenon that is being experienced is the rise of students' engagement and networking at an early stage. They no longer wait to finish school to see the value of creating meaningful connections with students taking similar courses in different universities, and also with people already in the industry. In this episode, Dora Smith interviews two engineering students, Maria Laura Polo and Felipe Gomez. They are both members of SPEED (Student Platform for Engineering Education Development), a student-engagement organization. They'll share with us how their organization promotes student involvement and engagement. Additionally, they'll share with us their experiences with remote learning and teaching when COVID was at its peak.
