Disco Fever all the rage and how music is measured.Jerolyn Sue Adolph Evans, the Primary First Counselor, is in a bit of a pickle. Quentin Scott got poison ivy from picking blackberries, and she's clueless about what to do. Linda Talbot, Second Counselor, is also on the case. Quentin thought his mom was literally lost, and no one wants to go with Jerolyn because they're all swamped with work. Wendy and Larry Fitzgerald have such a lovely place. Quentin ended up sleeping at MawMaw's house. She misses Deron P. Scarabin and only has Rachel Guidry to hang out with. They even sang Rhinestone Cowboy a bit. Bill Evans mentioned that MawMaw said everyone missed church earlier, but now Uncle Bill says MawMaw didn't go to church. MawMaw is Quentin's Primary teacher. Sports banquet and Bill got something special and "Jerolyn hasn't matured yet." They gave all the coaches "Coach of the Year" plaques. Mikelson decided to go to Nashville and make $21K. Bill's dad retired and sold everything but one tractor. All his parents' bills paid and no debt so they should be fine. Jerolyn said she might be "fat" by the time Scarabins return. Jerolyn has to have a CB. Quentin is Steve Austin but now Evil Knievel and Jerolyn is Disco Lady. Helen on Mother's Day. Clarence sprained his ankle helping Larry move. Handful of "tomaters." Uncle Nicky gave some cucumbers. Many beans and squash is great. Eggplant and bell peppers everywhere. Clarence will start working on sewer line. Helen feels like Quentin wanting us to talk back on the tape. Helen is out of "draws." Loves to hear from Scarabins. Wendy's backyard is so pretty. Only bad part is rain piles up in one spot. MawMaw called to be Primary Teacher and Secretary. Accepted Teacher position but refused the Secretary position because she can't write. Go up and down the steps forty times a day but rarely sees neighbors. Twice she talked without recording. Clarence "hollering." They pay the bills for the Scarabins as they come in. Gail had to work so Helen is watching Brent Edward Portie. Larry had fallen down with baby (John Dirk). Baby was fine but Larry was banged up and bruised. Emmett Adolph giving well wishes. Yvonne got a CB radio and real proud of it, carrying on with Helen Mae. Drinking a cold beer after coming from the pumping station. Yvonne Adolph sends well wishes. Everyone giggling "trying to talk to the stupid thing." Bad weather. Yvonne is the Lollipop, the name Marilyn gave Annie Adolph Chapman. Janelle Adolph gets on and gives an update on shrimping and how Mrs. Lizzy is enjoying her new job. Said her doctor going to get on her about weight gain. Sally's been sick. E.J. and Sue looked at Marilyn's trailer and tired waiting on it. Carolyn and Kyle Bergeron. Carolyn cracks up over Marilyn's grocery experience. Said Gail is still sitting and Craig made a home run in baseball. Horace said they just made errors. Kyle gets on and says Mrs. Hernandez will write to Jason. Kyle's keeping bikes clean and can't wait for us to come home. Craig updates on baseball and how much fun he's having. Horace has flu. Wendy has moved in her trailer. Don't let D.D. get beat up by the rocks. Edna Adolph updates. Fresh peaches and going to visit Pam and baby. Everyone has CBs down there. She's Hunny Bunny and Ernest is Gingerbread Man. Carolyn is Bewitched and Yvonne is Lollipop. She almost bowled 200. Gail Portie, May 11. Spending night at Helen's with Brent. Eddie's horse had baby. Brent wants to talk but didn't know what to say. Wendy has such a nice trailer. Made Gail "plum sick." Only complaint is ugly green carpet. Brent talks about his horses. Ernest Adolph and Edna brought some delicious peaches. PawPaw soaking his foot and "sure looks bad." Tomatoes coming in. Brent says a few words. Someone mistakenly thought D.D. gone overseas on mission instead of working at copper mine. JoAnne Ragas Scarabin. May 13. Helen and Clarence finish tape with more talk on the trailer park.

You'd be hard pressed to find a roadside produce stand that doesn't have a few buckets of strawberries for sale (unless they've sold out for the day) around the state. Juicy red fruit has been hitting the market, and reports from across the state indicate good yield so far. Andy makes us aware of a new bacterial issue showing up in the upstate and some symptoms to look for. Peaches and blueberries are moving along, and it looks like it is going to be another heavy yielding year for both crops. Andy and Sarah hit on some points on plum curculio. Phillip gives us an outlook from his side of the midlands “near the lake,” and Zack shares a coastal update. We get a brief update out of Sandhills from Justin as well as a “question of the week,” a submission from Zack about the native Pawpaw. Zack shares some facts about this interesting fruit tree with some help from Phillip, who compares the taste to that of a pina colada. Tell us, have you tasted this funky fruit? What are your thoughts? Oh, we can't forget about the return of the “dad joke.” Thanks to Zack for keeping us chuckling (or rolling our eyes).

In “What's in Store for the Pawpaw Patch?” Gravy producer Anya Groner examines the pawpaw, a long-overlooked fruit that's now being domesticated, making its way into farmers' markets, restaurants, and even beer. What plant has leaves that smell like green pepper, fruit that can taste like pineapple or turpentine, and bark that can be woven into baskets? Enter the poor man's banana, also known as the pawpaw. Two decades ago, you'd be hard-pressed to find a nursery with a pawpaw tree for sale, but these days the mid-sized tree and its fruit has a near cult following. Though indigenous to the eastern United States, pawpaw trees fell out of popular consciousness for almost a century. The reason is at least in part economic. The fruit ripens and rots so quickly that it's never been commercially viable. But, in recent years the northern-most variety of “custard apple,” a family of trees that includes the soursop and cherimoya, has had a remarkable comeback. Over two decades ago, horticulturalist Neal Peterson sparked a renewed interest in the fruit after patenting seven pawpaw cultivars, which he bred for flavor, low seed count, and perishability. Yet not everyone lauds the growing popularity of pawpaws. Dr. Troy Wiipongwii, Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Conservation at the College of William and Mary, says this surge of interest could backfire, causing an overproduction of the fruit that ultimately hurts the ecosystem. And Sean Wilson, who uses pawpaws to flavor seasonal beers at FullSteam Brewery in Durham, North Carolina, worries that too much cultivation might result in a bland fruit. So what's next? Will pawpaws become the next “it” fruit, destined to flavor everything from soap to cocktails? Or will oversupply collapse the market and leave us with a flavorless fruit? In this episode, Groner takes us to a festival in Paw Paw, West Virginia, to explore what we lose and what we gain as America's largest indigenous fruit, the pawpaw, is bred for market. Dr. Pomper shares insights into breeding strategies aimed at overcoming obstacles like disease and perishability, all while striving to enhance yield and fruit quality. It's a fascinating look at how innovation and passion intersect in the world of plant science. Finally, we glimpse into the future of pawpaw commercialization, as breeders work tirelessly to refine this fruit for broader appeal and distribution. From improving storage methods to refining sweetness and flavor, the path to making pawpaws a household name is filled with excitement and opportunity. As consumer interest in local and exotic foods grows, the pawpaw might just find its place in gardens and kitchens across America. But the anonymous listener who knew someone that used their late mother's ashes for traction when the car got stuck in the snow wins the day. Plus, horrible cures for the flu people used in the middle ages (urine bath?!?!) and what was on your bucket list when you were 13? One kid's got you beat... Join us for an enlightening conversation with Dr. Kirk Pomper, the driving force behind Kentucky State University's pioneering Paw Paw Research Program. As the world's only full-time initiative dedicated to this remarkable fruit, Dr. Pomper brings a wealth of knowledge and passion, tracing his journey from exploring various food crops to championing pawpaws, thanks to the visionary Brett Calloway. We navigate the potential of pawpaw as a transformative alternative crop for small farmers in Kentucky, while also tackling the unique challenges of making this fruit a staple in homes across America. Dr. Pomper takes us on a journey through the complexities of pawpaw processing, from the intricacies of pulp extraction to innovative storage solutions. As we compare the pawpaw to its fruity cousin, the persimmon, we unravel the market challenges both face and the exciting possibilities for value-added products like pawpaw smoothies and jams. We learn about efforts to extend the fruit's shelf life through controlled atmosphere storage, ensuring pawpaws reach new markets far and wide. Our discussion culminates in the fascinating world of pawpaw pollination and cultivar research. Dr. Pomper sheds light on the intricate pollination strategies of pawpaw trees, emphasizing the critical role of cross-pollination and the importance of planting diverse varieties. We also highlight Kentucky State University's endeavors to promote pawpaw awareness, including the upcoming Fifth International Pawpaw Conference and annual Pawpaw Day celebrations. This episode offers a captivating glimpse into the efforts to bring the pawpaw from obscurity to the forefront of the fruit world. It's Wednesday, October 30th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and Adam McManus Nigerian Muslims beheaded 4 people including a Christian Open Doors UK reports that Muslim extremists beheaded four abducted individuals recently in northeast Nigeria. At least one of them was a Christian. The terrorists released a graphic video of the murders and are believed to be from Boko Haram. In the video, an armed terrorist said, “Wherever there is an infidel, we will go and find them out by ourselves and execute them.” John Samuel with Open Doors said, “Boko Haram extremists have clearly said time and time again that they are waging a jihad against people they call ‘infidels' – that is anyone who does not sign up to their extreme interpretation of Islam. Some of the people at the top of this list, then, are Christians who are clear targets because of their faith.” 60,000 Brits sign freedom of prayer petition Alliance Defending Freedom released a petition for freedom of prayer in the United Kingdom. this month. Already, nearly 60,000 people have signed it. Authorities in the U.K. recently convicted a Christian of violating censorship zones around abortion mills. Army veteran Adam Smith-Connor had simply prayed silently near an abortion mill! Alliance Defending Freedom sent the petition to U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer. It states, “Freedom of thought is our most basic and precious of rights -- and has long been recognized in British law and every major human rights document from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights onwards.” Proverbs 29:2 says, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan.” Kamala calls Trump a “petty tyrant,” likening him to King George III Last night, Vice President Kamala Harris made her campaign's closing argument in a speech at the Ellipse in the nation's capital, reports The Epoch Times. Her campaign claimed that 75,000 people were in attendance. The rally was located at a symbolic site for two reasons. First, it had a direct view of the White House. And secondly, it's the place where Trump delivered his speech on January 6, 2021, that preceded the Capitol breach. HARRIS: “Nearly 250 years ago, America was born when we wrested freedom from a petty tyrant. Across the generations, Americans have preserved that freedom, expanded it, and, in so doing, proved to the world that a government of, by, and for the people is strong and can endure. (cheers) “Those who came before us, the patriots at Normandy and Selma, Seneca Falls and Stonewall (cheers), on farmlands and factory floors, they did not struggle, sacrifice, and lay down their lives only to see us cede our fundamental freedoms. (cheers) “They didn't do that only to see us submit to the will of another petty tyrant. (cheers) These United States of America, we are not a vessel for the schemes of wannabe dictators.” GOP Congressman: People are done with Kamala's fear mongering Appearing on The Angle with Laura Ingraham on Fox News, Republican Congressman Byron Donalds of Florida rejected the nasty tone, fear mongering, and unsupported accusations in the waning days that Kamala Harris has adopted. Listen. DONALDS: “They were joy and vibes three weeks ago. Now, everything is ‘attack Donald Trump,' ‘call him Hitler,' ‘call his supporters fascists.' “We were at Madison Square Garden. Laura, it was great to see you there. It was a fantastic night. “You had people like myself, Vivek Ramaswamy, ‘Harry-O,' the founder of Death Row Records. We spoke at that rally. Do you think the Nazis would let two black guys and a guy of Hindu dissent speak at a rally? At one of theirs? Absolutely not! But that's all they have. “The constant fear mongering and gaslighting is enough. People are sick of it. They're done. They're done with Kamala Harris and they're done with this version of the Democrat Party.” Washington Post, L.A. Times, & USA Today don't endorse for president Breaking with recent practice, major news outlets are not endorsing a candidate in the upcoming presidential election. The Washington Post announced last Friday it is not making a presidential endorsement for the first time in 36 years. The Los Angeles Times and USA Today also announced they will not be endorsing a candidate for president. In the wake of the decisions, top editors resigned and 200,000 left-leaning subscribers to the Washington Post cancelled their subscriptions. Many conservatives have concluded that Jeff Bezos and Patrick Soon-Shiong, the billionaire owners of the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times respectively, have concluded that Trump is likely to win the 2024 election and do not want to irritate him by endorsing Kamala Harris. How God spared a couple in Hurricane Helene Queen City News reports a North Carolina couple is giving thanks to God after surviving Hurricane Helene. Howard Ray and his wife, Lisa, thought they were about to die as flooding swamped their trailer in Yancey County. However, they were able to escape the trailer and use their couch as a flotation device. Eventually, they made their way to safety. HOWARD: “I don't understand. We shouldn't be alive. I mean, there's just no way. It's all God.” LISA: “Yeah, we shouldn't be alive, but God has a purpose.” REPORTER: “What do you think that purpose is?” LISA: “I'm not sure. I'm still asking questions.” HOWARD: “I think maybe what we're doing right now, maybe it gets out and shows people that there is a God.” Lisa had to be hospitalized for some cuts, and Howard, a lieutenant with the local volunteer fire department, returned to the area to help first responders. They both praised God for His protection. Worldview listeners fully fund Pakistani orphanage well And finally, if you heard the newscast on Monday, you learned that a 200-foot-deep well of a Pakistani Christian orphanage, which housed 87 orphans, had become polluted with chemicals which tragically led to the deaths of two orphans. Toward the $15,000 cost of building a 500-foot-deep well which will deliver safe drinking water, Pastor Michael, the founder of the orphanage whom I have met personally, still needed to raise the final $4,185. Thanks to several Worldview donors on Monday, the amount remaining was $3,110. And yesterday, Michele in Altha, Florida gave $100, a couple from San Antonio, Texas gave $150, a family in Lexington Park, Maryland gave $150, a couple in Paw Paw, Michigan gave $500, a couple in Kailua Kona, Hawaii gave $500, a couple in Simpsonville, South Carolina gave $1,000, and Dick and Deborah in Wayland, Michigan -- along with their teenage sons Jonas and Jeremiah who contributed money from their dog-sitting business – gave $1,054.75. Those 7 donations add up to $3,454.75. That means we surpassed the goal by $344.75. The additional money will go toward the $2,000 monthly budget which pays for the food, clothing, medical care, and Christian education of the 85 orphans. If you would like to help with that budget, send your tax-deductible donation made out to Rio Grande Valley Prayer Center, their sister organization here in America. The address is 3106 Harmony Lane, Mission, TX 78574. In the memo, write: “Pakistani orphanage.” The prayer center will then wire your money to a nearby bank in Pakistan. Please email me at Adam@TheWorldview.com to let me know how much you sent so I can offer one final report on Thursday's newscast. James 1:27 says, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, October 30th, in the year of our Lord 2024. Join us as we kick off season five with a playful and engaging exploration of the fascinating pawpaw fruit, a hidden gem native to North America. In this episode, we uncover the intriguing characteristics of pawpaws, also known by quirky names like the "poor man's banana" and "Indiana banana." Discover how this unique fruit, pollinated by carrion flies and beetles due to its meat-like scented flowers, thrives as an understory tree growing in clusters. We unravel its mysterious historical journey, discussing how pawpaws might be an unusual outlier in North American flora, potentially linked to tropical relatives and ancient survival through past ice ages. The conversation shifts to the modern challenges faced by the pawpaw tree, focusing on the impacts of suburbanization, industrialization, and invasive species. Despite not being officially endangered, the pawpaw's presence is dwindling, a concern noted by older generations. We reflect on its historical significance, exploring colonial records and the role Indigenous populations played in spreading the tree to northern regions. This backdrop provides valuable insight into the pawpaw's distribution across North America and highlights the importance of preserving this unique fruit. Listen in as we trace the evolution of pawpaw cultivation, discussing key periods of development and the dedicated efforts of pioneers in the permanent agriculture movement. From the early 20th century to the present day, the episode highlights influential figures and their contributions to pawpaw breeding, including Neil Peterson's breeding program and the work at Kentucky State University. We explore the challenges of bringing pawpaws to mainstream markets, such as their limited shelf life, and share lighthearted anecdotes about enjoying pawpaw-based treats like beer and ice cream. This season promises to shine a spotlight on lesser-known fruits, beginning with the remarkable story of the pawpaw.
