(Apologies for the poor audio quality of the original recording) John the Baptist plays a significant role in the New Testament record. Many will be interested to know that John the Baptist was a well-known figure in the 1st-century outside of even the New Testament record. Flavius Josephus (a Pharisee and participant in the Roman vs. Jewish war) writes about John the Baptist's death at the hands of Herod. He says: “Now some of the Jews thought that the destruction of Herod's army came from God, and was a very just punishment for what he did against John called the baptist [the dipper]. For Herod had him killed, although he was a good man and had urged the Jews to exert themselves to virtue, both as to justice toward one another and reverence towards God, and having done so join together in washing-” Antiquities 18.5.2 116-119 What is the significance of the John the Baptist figure in God's story? Why is it compelling that John the Baptist came preaching repentance and that he was the forerunner of Messiah? Why is it doubly significant that John the Baptist preached about the "Kingdom of Heaven" being "at hand". I think the answer will anchor your heart to Jesus and might just transform your life and the world around you. No King but Christ! Jeff Durbin Lead Pastor/Elder Sunday, June 8, 2014

Who do you believe that Jesus is? Do you believe he was just a good man, who lived a good life? Do you believe he was a wise man who gave good advice? Do you believe he was magician, a con-man, a liar? Or do you believe he was something more? During Jesus life, no one knew who Jesus was. His family denied him, his friends doubted him, and even those in his home town rejected him. In this sermon Pastor Byron shows us the good news of the gospel that Jesus was rejected, so we could be accepted. SCRIPTURE FOR THE WEEK: Mark 6:1-6 BEFORE YOU GET STARTED: Take 5 minutes to silently read over the section of scripture to gather insight, questions, or discussion with the group before answering the questions. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. What do you think it would be like to grow up in the same town as Jesus? Do you think would you recognize him as the Messiah? Why or why not? 2. What are the town people’s reasons for not believing in Jesus? What are the most common reasons you hear today? 3. List some of the amazing things we’ve seen Jesus accomplish throughout Mark’s Gospel. What testimonies have you seen in your life, but still cause you to doubt? 4. Should we be fearful of offending people for the sake of the gospel? Why or why not? 5. How does your unbelief prevent Jesus’ from working in your life? CHALLENGE: This week you challenge is to ask a three non-Christian’s what their common objections to the Christian faith is. Do not argue, debate, or get offended. Instead, listen and thank them for their insights. You will spend the entire study in Mark praying for these three people, with various challenges to help you share your faith. Be prepared to share their answers next week over dinner.

Day 2: Read Leviticus 23:15-22 & 1 Cor. 5:7 and discuss: Why were the loaves used in the Feast of Firstfruits “leavened”?  What was the purpose of physical circumcision in the Old Testament? Day 3: Read Leviticus 23:15-22 & Acts 7:51-58 & and discuss: Were all the Jews - in Acts - “cut to the heart” when they heard people speaking and teaching about the Messiah? Why not? What is the significance of these different outcomes? How would you apply this to your own heart? Day 4: Knowing that the Elders’ Retreat is coming up (1/28-1/30), if you were to share anything with them what would it be? It could be a question or some feedback about something; it could be a nomination for someone you think we should prayerfully consider examining for an elder or a deacon. If you were to share something, what would it be? Please email one of the elders, OR use the feedback cards to share your thoughts with us. Anonymous feedback is fine.

Overview - Must Elijah come first. Matthew chapter 17 verses 6-13. We opened up our sermon today talking about the love that Christ brought, verses the powerful and sometimes scary voice of God which spoke from the cloud, that the disciples feared. Jesus Christ was indeed the embodiment of the Love of God to mankind. We then looked at the statement by the disciples to Jesus, about the fact that Elijah was supposed to come before Him. Yet Elijah had not come before Christ. Is Jesus really the Jewish promised Messiah? Why didn't Elijah come before Jesus did if Jesus was the Christ? I answer these questions and bring much clarity to this subject with this sermon titled "Must Elijah come first". Enjoy the message. God bless you Pastor Ed

Over the next three weeks we will look at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The story has been well told here by Mark, and we have heard it, sung it, studied it, and considered it many times over the years. It is shocking for many reasons, but perhaps the most shocking questions are those we usually don’t ask. As I have read and considered the cross of Christ these questions flood my mind: • Why, given all of his miracles and other amazing evidence, didn’t the Jews believe Jesus was the Messiah? • Why did God allow this tragedy to happen to His own Son? • Why was the cross necessary for us to be rescued from our sin? Couldn’t God have found a better way? a less violent way? • What really happened at the cross theologically? When Jesus said, “It is finished,” what was finished? What did the death of Christ on the cross accomplish? Over the next 3 weeks we’ll look at Mark’s description of the crucifixion of Christ and find God’s answer to these important questions.

This week we are looking at Jesus from John the Baptizer's perspective. More specifically, we are reflecting upon John's question concerning Jesus sent via his disciples to Jesus while John was in prison. John asks: "Are you the one or should we expect someone else?" It is definitely a strange question coming from John, who during his days as a baptizer was so convinced that Jesus was the anointed one: "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world!" (Jn. 1:29). He heard the voice coming down from heaven during Jesus' baptism "You are my son, whom I love, with whom I am well pleased." (Lk. 3:22) Many have speculated the reason for John's question and we will look at some of those suggestions. But overall it is clear that Jesus does not always meet our expectations when we want them to be met. He is surprisingly unmoved by our best laid plans for him. His solutions to our problems are not always what we think we need. Perhaps more than any other person on earth, Jesus is never swayed by logical arguments and or the pressing needs of friends. His eye is always on the father's will and it is to that end he constantly works. While we find this frustrating at times, as John undoubtedly did, we must admit, it is the wisest and best course of action. Questions for Discussion: 1. Slide 2-4. Read some of the Gospel texts on the ministry of John the Baptizer. Contrast him with the way Jesus dealt with people. Why is there such a difference? 2. Slide 8. Do you think the evidence indicated that John was previously convinced that Jesus was the son of God, the Messiah? Why or Why not? 3. Slide 9. What do you think of the argument that this was not John's question at all but one posed by his disciples with his authorization? 4. Slide 10. Can you imagine what it must have been like for an outdoors kind of person to be locked in a dungeon? What would that do to your emotional well-being? Is the question an indication of John's desperation? 5. Slide 11-13. Read Matt. 3:11-13. Try to separate in those comments regarding Jesus the work of his first coming and his second coming. What part of the message do you like best? If you were in prison, would that make any difference on your opinion? 6. Slide 15. Explain the beatitude of verse 6 in your own words. What do we need to remember about the Lord's timing and way of completing the Father's business?
