Matt chats with Paul Wilson, a PhD candidate at the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on migration in the book of Acts. This is a topic that not only garners attention among biblical scholars but also among those engaged in modern political discourse. It's a hot topic, to say the least. In this conversation, Paul guides listeners to think through the subject of migration and, specifically, forced migration, in a way that leans into the insights of the New Testament and Christ's vision for the church to be a loving and welcoming community. +++ Support the podcast via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheBibleUnmuted Read Matt's blog: matthewhalsted.substack.com Don't forget to subscribe to The Bible (Unmuted)!

This episode is brought to you from sunny San Diego, where the 2024 annual IBR/SBL/AAR conference was hosted. Matt offers thoughts on the value of academic conferences, not least with respect to the Bible. In short, deep reflection happens best in community, where the back-and-forthness of dialogue can take place and where encouragement and critique can blossom. Biblical hermeneutics, after all, is a dialogical endeavor, one that simply cannot happen in the silo of individualism. In this vein, Matt also discusses anti-intellectualism in the church and why the academic study of Scripture is a gift to the kingdom. + + + Support the podcast via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheBibleUnmuted Read Matt's blog: matthewhalsted.substack.com Matt's newest book: The End of the World As You Know It Don't forget to subscribe to The Bible (Unmuted)!

Revelation 10 introduces a "mighty angel" from heaven. The angel's speech, message, and activities resemble that of an angel depicted in the Old Testament (i.e. in Daniel). But there are also dissimilarities between the two. How might observing these features help us understand Revelation 10, especially with respect to the angel's enigmatic speech about time (10:6)? There's also the mysterious message of "the seven thunders," which John is told not to write down. What does this mean, and how could the Old Testament help us understand the message's concealment? Finally, what's going on with John being told to "eat" a scroll, and how does this lead into the discussion about the two witnesses in Revelation 11? Going Above and Beyond for King Jesus Jesus goes from a person's head to their feet in today's passage to illustrate how He calls believers to go above and beyond the law so they can impact others with the gospel! Read Matt. 5:38-42 Going Above and Beyond for King Jesus Let's Pray! The law teaches that punishment should fit the crime V. 38 Jesus is referring to the Law of Retribution spoken of in places like Ex. 21:24, Lev. 24:20, and Deut. 19:21. The Law of Retribution was never meant to sanction personal retaliation, but gave guidance to leaders to ensure both that justice was done and that punishments fit crimes. He shall confess his sin that he has committed. And he shall make full restitution for his wrong, adding a fifth to it, and giving it to him to whom he did wrong. -Numbers 5:7 Jesus taught believers to go beyond the law for gospel impact V. 39a Everything Jesus taught and did in Matthew's gospel is building toward His giving us the Great Commission in Matthew 28. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in Heaven and earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” -Matt. 28:16-20 Why did the first Christians take the gospel even to ‘evil' people who opposed them? They knew that they too had once been ‘evil' sinners, opponents of God. “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.” -Luke 11:13 Non-believers don't have the Holy Spirit living inside them – all they have is the old sin nature, which like gravity pulls them back toward carnal actions. Lost people act lost because they are lost. What is Jesus calling us to do? Show the same kindness to others God has shown to us! God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance. -Romans 2:4b 3 ways believers go beyond the law V. 39b-42 Believers are not to react to every insult (v. 39b) Turning the other cheek DOES NOT MEAN you would be doing the right thing if you stood and did nothing while your family or neighbor or even a stranger was attacked, or that Christians should decline military service. Turning the other cheek DOES mean you are not personally looking to answer every insult with an insult, perpetuating a conflict. Believers are willing to give the shirt off their back (v. 40) Jesus here is telling believers to extend the patience they would show a brother to non-brothers also, even thought it was underserved. They had received underserved grace, they were to show it to others. To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? -1 Cor. 6:7 This does not mean believers should not set boundaries to avoid harassment, abuse, and excessive financial loss. It does mean the default setting of believers is to be “for people” and try to work things out. Believers are willing to go many miles out of their way (v. 41) Why does Jesus call believers to ‘go the extra mile?' Because it's in the second mile when others start believing there is something to your faith. Now here's where we need wisdom – because the same Paul who was willing to endure insults for the gospel also at times DID utilize his citizenship rights to avoid further mistreatment (Acts 16:35ff). When non-Christians see Christians act and react in ways that are above and beyond what's expected, and what they themselves don't have the spiritual power to do, they want what we have and ask about Jesus. Are you prepared to give to help others the way Jesus gave to help you?

Act(s) Now Origin story-The power of prayer Acts 1:12-15 Notes:         CHRISTlike Characteristic: Connected to God Through the in Word and Prayer/Loving God   LifeGroup Questions:  Applying the Teaching to Our Lives Here's a question…do you really need to discuss John's sermon or would your time be better used praying together? I've listed questions below if needed, but I highly suggest just boldly approaching the throne of grace instead. Love, John. What origin story (fictional or real) fascinates you and why? What did the Holy Spirit speak to you from the opening of God's Word? What are your first thoughts? Read Matt. 6:5-8 As a group, list the principles Jesus says are the way to pray correctly. Do these truths encourage you or discourage you? Why? Who is someone in your life whose prayers have impacted you or someone you love in a profound way? Explain your answer. Read Matt. 6:9-13. Jesus begins by saying “THIS is how you should pray…”. How might this help a person struggling with prayer? How should His prayer shape ours? List some key principles. Acts 1:14 says the church in Acts “joined together constantly in prayer”. Could this be said of our church NOW? Why or why not? What needs to change in you (don't focus on others) for our church to become a “house of prayer”? Who is one person you are praying for, believing that God's kingdom and rule will come over their life?

Read Matt. 18:21-35. Who is speaking? According to this can I lose my salvation if I don't forgive someone? How do I know when I've truly forgiven someone? Jesus commands his followers to be givers. Would you say you come to church to primarily give or receive? Explain. Some ways to be generous with our lives included giving our time, attention, thoughts, words, and influence. Who has been a shining example of some of these to you? What is a failure, wound or burden you received in life that Jesus has transformed as a gift to be given to help others? According to Luke 6:38, what WILL change if we are dedicated to giving our lives more than receiving? How might this change our church? Will you commit to forgiving always and giving your life extravagantly? What needs to change today?   Christ-like characteristic: Relates with other centered love.

Matt talks about how he transitioned from viewing himself as a victim of FA to seeing himself as a hero in his own story. He describes the impact of the diagnosis as an "inciting event" and highlights how the hero's journey is not just a linear path but a cyclical one. Matt emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility and finding little victories along the way, despite the ongoing presence of FA. The discussion touches on various aspects of life with a rare disease, relationships, and personal growth. Matt also shares his experience of presenting at the FA Symposium and how he and his co-presenters used mythical characters to relate their topics to the hero's journey concept.
