The latest episode of the Georgia Tech Research Podcast is the fourth in a special series commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Georgia Tech Research Institute's Agricultural Technology Research Program (ATRP). Host Stephanie Richter, a GTRI Research Scientist, talks with Mike Giles, president of the Georgia Poultry Federation. Giles, whose family operated an agribusiness in middle Georgia when he was growing up, joined the Federation in 2000 and became President in 2009. He traces the almost lockstep development of ATRP with the Georgia Poultry Federation, which began in 1951. Together, the two entities have had a profound impact on the Five P's of Georgia Agriculture: peaches, peanuts, pecans, pine, and, of course, poultry. Giles delves into some of the ways his organization, and ATRP, have positively impacted agriculture in the state, including: Advancing technology. Working with the State Legislature on measures to avail the industry, including tax benefits. He also notes a current legislative push that he feels with help Georgia's agriculture industry—increasing weight limits for trucks that carry agricultural products. Giles makes special note of the unsung contributions made by the industry in times of crisis, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why did the chicken cross the road? That’s about the only question about the poultry industry not answered during this week’s Hall Tales episode with host Johnny Vardeman and guests Abit Massey and Mike Giles, both industry experts with the Georgia Poultry Federation. This episode was recorded at the studios of 89.1 WBCX Gainesville, Georgia, located on Brenau University. How the poultry industry came to be the Gainesville powerhouse it is today, where the new markets are coming up, what’s next for the industry globally — Johnny, Abit and Mike cover the waterfront in this episode. Tune in later this month when we talk the history of Hall County agriculture. Hall Tales is a podcast series produced by The Times that explores the history of Hall County from recent events to those beyond living memory. Episodes publish twice a month through December, when the county celebrates its 200th birthday. You can subscribe to Hall Tales on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher or catch it at gainesvilletimes.com. I have a question for you. What is the one thing that permeates EVERY aspect of consumer interaction with a company? If you looked at the title of this episode you can probably guess that the answer is the brand. Think about it. When Chipotle decides to add a new menu item the number one question they need to ask themselves, even more important than ‘Does this taste good?’, is ‘Does this new item fit in with our brand?’. When Apple decides to appoint a new employee as a speaker at an event, ‘Does this person represent our brand?’. When Target decides to update the lighting inside their stores, ‘Does these lights feel cohesive with our brand?’. It’s pretty crazy when you really think about it. The bigger and more successful the company, the smaller and more mundane the change that needs to pass the brand test. Today we learn all about this test and how we can better cultivate our own brands.
