It's Bank Holiday Monday, so let's take it easy and talk about some comics. After promising it early in the show's history, Charlie's finally read the first arc of IDW's Star Trek comic by Lanzig & Kelly. Look, we're Casual Trek, this is the level of service you get from us.The first arc, “Godshock” features that classic Star Trek concept: thumbing your teeth at god, only this time it's a bad thing as someone's killing gigantic cosmic entities! Who did this and how can it be stopped? Well, Ben Sisko's back from his time as a cosmic entity to find out, with an almost all-star cast of people from throughout Star Trek History. There's Data and Dr Crusher from TNG, Paris from Voyager, Scotty from TOS and Jake Sisko is also there. Worf guest stars for long enough to be a bad parent and back door pilot for another series, and there are a couple of new characters who are a lot of fun.Join us on the USS Theseus and prepare for a lot of tangents, as we both love talking comics.References: The Super Stalag of Space, Harry 20 on the High Rock, Dan Dare, Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation Squared, Quatermass and the Pit, The Legion of Super-Heroes, The Legion Clubhouse, comic collection sizes, YES Charlie has put rolled-up Walking Dead volumes in his back pocket, the Bendis New Avengers approach to team-building, Billy Pilgrim, The Krakoan Age of X-Men, Marvel Swimsuit Specials (which are coming back), release a Star Trek Swimsuit Special you cowards!, Data pages vs data pages, Gilmore Girls spoiled Anna Karenina for me, Charlie's Super Mario Quest 2025, the Summers family tree, the Dark Horse Buffy Series, Marvel's Star Wars, Dr Who comics, the Energon Universe, the CLZ collector's app, Malibu Comics' Star Trek… Oh, and sometimes IDW's Star Trek.
Jack & Geoffキs exploration of Malibu's POTA comics continues with a look at issues #3-#5! As Alexander plots to re-take Ape City from the villainous gorilla General Ollo, orangutan advisor Jacob finds himself at an ethical crossroads. Also, a new mad scientist ape bursts on the scene, and a few old favorites (such as Lady Liberty and jump kicks) drop by for a taste of the familiar!
A new Ape-och dawns! Jack and Geoff start discussing Malibu Graphicsキ early 1990s POTA comic series, with a look at issues #1 and #2! Thereキs plenty of familiar fun to latch onto: black & white art reminiscent of the old Marvel series, a bombastic and villainous gorilla general, andキan ape who looks like short-lived 80s fast food restaurant Mac Tonight?! It all starts here!
Tom Mason is a comics industry veteran and a key figure in the rise of Malibu Comics. As one of the company's founders, he played a pivotal role in launching the creator-owned imprint Bravura and co-founding the Ultraverse line. His creator-owned series Dinosaurs For Hire—a wild, action-packed comic about gun-toting, wisecracking dinosaurs working for the government—left a lasting impression on readers.Beyond comics, Tom has had an extensive career in television, writing and story-editing alongside fellow Malibu alum Dan Danko. Together, they've contributed to over 500 episodes of animated TV—and even earned an Emmy along the way. He also co-writes the Captain Awesome book series under the pseudonym Stan Kirby and serves as a consultant for Space Goat Productions.Tune in as we dive into Tom's journey through comics, animation, and beyond!Support the show
The Ultraverse is a forgotten corner of the Marvel Universe, packed with hidden superheroes from the 90s! Forget about Iron Man, Spider-Man, Wolverine and The Avengers, it's time to learn about Prime, Prototype, Nightman and The Ultraforce! Before the MCU, Hollywood went through a massive comic book boom in the early 90's, as comics like The Mask, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Crow became big hits! Marvel Comics bought out one of their competitors, Malibu Comics, and merged their Ultraverse into the Marvel Universe! This launched Ultraforce the animated series, a video game and even a line of action figures! But it wasn't long before Marvel cancelled Ultraforce and all the other Ultra-Heroes, making sure they'd never be seen ever again! Who were Ultraforce? We're still hanging out with NightMan in Bay City for the return of walking Christian Slater clone Space Face in episode Bad to the Bone. This is a bad episode of a bad television show which completely undercuts any sense of dramatic tension by dumping a 3 minute "previously on" segment at the beginning. Shapeshifting villain Space Face wants to frame Johnny Domino for murder but it's unclear why, since the last time he was around he wanted to kill Johnny's dad and Lt. Dann and doesn't seem to remember they exist this episode. Also, apparently the NigthMan suit is super easy to operate? So basically anyone could be NightMan? Cool. If you like the show, give us a rating on Apple Podcasts. And follow us on Twitter at @weirdcenter or Instagram at @weirdnesspodcast (where you can suggest TV shows we should cover on the podcast)!
Okay, Chase and Emmy were a little cranky on this one. But you would be too if you had to play these three games back-to-back. Cliffhanger is a boring game that plays acceptably, until it doesn't. Battletoads and Double Dragon isn't fit for either of those franchises (and that's saying something because we already kinda don't like Battletoads.) And Aero the Acrobat is kinda like if a DM went through the trouble of crafting a really excellent story, and was then just hell-bent on wiping the party and ending the game early. I wish I'd thought of that metaphor on the show. In any case, don't expect us to be kind at all to these games. If you really cherish any childhood memories of these games... it'll be okay if you want to give this one a skip. We also talked about the movie Cliffhanger (a first time watch for both of us) and we didn't like that either. So, you've been warned. We are sorry about all the negativity today. We really don't like to be that kind of a show. We do discuss the brief history of Malibu Comics, and that's kinda interesting. We hope you still enjoy the episode more than we did playing the games we talked about.

Dan Brereton is an artists' artist. Skilled as much with a paint brush as a pencil, he broke onto the comics scene via Eclipse Comics and the Black Terror limited series. He then hooked up with DC, where he brought his painterly style to titles like Batman: Thrillkiller, Superman and Batman: Legends of the World's Finest, and JLA: Seven Caskets. He's perhaps best known for his own series, The Nocturnals, a team book that originally started at Malibu Comics. Dan's work has appeared outside of comics as well, including TV shows, video games, and album covers, most notably for Rob Zombie's Hellbilly Deluxe.
