In The Invention of Order: On the Coloniality of Space (Duke University Press, 2026), Don Thomas Deere retraces the colonial origins of spatial organization in the Americas and the Caribbean and its lasting impact on modern structures of knowledge, power, race, gender as well as understandings of global modernity. The coloniality of space dispossessed Indigenous, African, and mixed populations as it constructed new systems of control and movement. Deere demonstrates how these developments manifested, among other forms, in urban grid patterns imposed during the development of Spanish colonial cities as well as totalizing trade routes crisscrossing the Atlantic. Drawing on a range of thinkers including Enrique Dussel, Édouard Glissant, and Sylvia Wynter, Deere reveals how movement—who travels, who settles, and who is excluded—becomes an essential component of control under colonial rule. Against the violence of spatial reordering, Deere outlines how novel forms of resistance and insurgency geographies still take hold, particularly in the Caribbean, where landscapes remain excessive, eruptive, and uncaptured by the order of modernity. Don Thomas Deere is Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department at Texas A&M University. He previously taught at Wesleyan University and received his PhD with distinction from DePaul University and BA from Cornell University. He is a Mellon Mays fellow and the recipient of a Mellon Career Enhancement Faculty Fellowship. His research focuses on the intersections of Latin American, Caribbean, and Contemporary Continental Philosophy. John Deere has agreed to a $99 million settlement in a class action lawsuit regarding its right-to-repair policies.
The conversation begins with the life of founder Ray Hagie, an Iowa State graduate, farmer, entrepreneur, inventor, and public servant whose relentless focus on solving problems led to one of agriculture's greatest innovations. Faced with labor shortages during the 1940s and inspired by the introduction of 2,4-D herbicide, Ray envisioned a better way to apply crop protection products. In 1947, that vision became the world's first self-propelled sprayer. Kevin walks through the evolution of Hagie's equipment lineup, including: The early three-wheel machines The introduction of front-mounted booms The first hydrostatic drive sprayer Expansion into larger-capacity, high-clearance machines The development of iconic models like the 640, 8400, 2100, and STS series The discussion highlights how Hagie wasn't simply building machinery—it was creating timing flexibility and efficiency that farmers could never achieve with traditional pull-type sprayers. The episode also dives into: Why front-mounted booms were revolutionary How Hagie survived the difficult farm economy of the 1980s The advantages of remaining independent and focused on a niche market What customers demanded as sprayer technology evolved The importance of innovation culture within the company A major portion of the conversation centers on the 2016 partnership with John Deere. Kevin explains what led to the agreement, what both companies gained, and how Hagie has successfully maintained its unique identity while leveraging Deere's technology, precision agriculture systems, dealer network, and global reach. Along the way, listeners will hear stories about Ray Hagie's leadership, entrepreneurial mindset, and lasting influence on agriculture. The discussion also explores what Ray might be working on if he were innovating today and whether the spirit of problem-solving that built Hagie still drives the company forward. Whether you're a machinery enthusiast, Hagie owner, John Deere fan, or simply appreciate stories of agricultural innovation, this episode provides a fascinating look at one of the most important equipment manufacturers in farming history. Ursa Ag is an Alberta, Canada-based company that is selling a repairable, no tech tractor. It's not often we have companies on this podcast, but listeners of the show will know we have been covering the right to repair movement for years. One of the things I've written about most is the frustration that farmers feel with agriculture giant John Deere, which has made their tractors very difficult to repair by loading it up with tech, lobbying against right to repair legislation, and making parts and diagnostic tools and repair guides hard to access. When we write about right to repair, people often say - why don't people just vote with their dollars and buy something else? Well, all the major tractor companies have more or less done the same thing Deere has done - add software locks, sensors, and digital rights management to their tractors. There wasn't any other alternative. Doug Wilson of Ursa Ag has built an alternative. Ursa Ag is selling a repairable dumb tractor specifically to provide an alternative in the market. We spoke with Doug about how one creates a tractor company, how it all works, and what the response has been. 00:00 Doug Wilson Introduction 00:02:05 Why IRSA Ag Exists 00:04:24 Modern Tractors & Repair Locks 00:07:40 Demand for Older Tractors 00:08:46 The $800K Tractor Story 00:09:37 Building a Repairable Tractor 00:12:56 Precision Ag vs Simplicity 00:20:45 Starting a Tractor Company 00:22:52 AI & Everyday Farm Work 00:27:21 Viral Response & Demand 00:28:52 Expansion Plans 00:31:56 Why Farmers Want Simpler Machines 00:34:11 Farm Consolidation 00:35:48 Tech Overload Beyond Farming 00:36:57 What's Next YouTube Version: https://youtu.be/wYM4Ho-Ma9w Learn more about your ad choices. Felecia Pryor wanted to be an FBI agent. A psychological test, a shuttle bus, and a conversation with a stranger at a conference changed everything. What followed was nearly two decades building people strategy inside some of the world's most complex industrial organisations - Ford Motor Company, BorgWarner, and now John Deere, where she leads HR, labour relations, enterprise security, aviation and brand across a 189-year-old company. In this conversation, Felecia talks about what it means to be a truly strategic partner, not just good with people, but commercially minded enough to shape the agenda. About the peer who once told her HR was playing in the garden while the house was on fire. And about why she believes courage is the defining leadership capability of our time. Felecia Pryor is Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer at Deere and Company, known globally as John Deere, where she leads people strategy across one of the world's most iconic industrial organisations. ----------------------- Craving inspiration? Keeper Of The Greens segment of The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast is brought to you by John Deere Golf. When you work where others play, you need a partner you can trust to keep your course in perfect condition. Find your nearest John Deere dealer at deere.com.auKeenan Hutchings grew up in regional South Australia where his father was the golf course superintendent at Millicent Golf Club. Growing up, helping around the course with his Dad, and playing golf meant Keenan only ever really had eyes on golf in his future. When Keenan finished school he got offered an apprenticeship but it wasn't local to home. No, it was in Adelaide city, far away from the country life he grew up in. It was time to head to the big smoke and take on all that would lay before him. He learnt from some of the best in the industry and one of the best golf clubs in Adelaide and here he would spend 9 years in total before things needed a change.Jumping to today, Keenan is Golf Course Superintendent himself and leads a small, young, energetic team of greenkeepers that maintain the course at Flagstaff Hill Golf Club in the hills to the south east of the city. A golf course in a unique landscape that is moving forward in leaps and bounds recently with a new clubhouse, some course improvements, and the addition of a mini golf course, there's plenty to learn experience and enjoy at Flagstaff Hills GCTo fill in the gaps, hear about preparing for a few Australian Women's Opens, and learn about a golf course you may have never heard about before, grab yourself a Warragamba Slammer (or preferred drink of choice) to stay hydrated as I take you into a lesser known South Australian golf course! You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! The Golfing Greenkeeper - InstagramThe Golfing Greenkeeper - FacebookThe Golfing Greenkeeper TV - YouTubeSend me an email to - thegolfinggreenkeeper@gmail.comPeople and places mentioned in this podcast:Flagstaff Hill Golf ClubTara Iti Golf ClubMillicent Golf ClubThe Grange Golf ClubKooyonga Golf ClubRoyal Adelaide Golf ClubGlenelg Golf ClubHighercombe Golf ClubEP.75 Keeper of the Greens - Tim WarrenEP.82 Keeper of the Greens - Rowan DaymondEP.33 Keeper of the Greens - Nathan BennettEP.152 Keeper of the Greens - Bailey WakeEP.130 Keeper of the Greens - Adam Lamb
Andy shares lessons from a month of operating two install crews plus a maintenance crew during the busiest spring of the company's 12 seasons. He explains that adding a second crew means he can't work hands-on in the field, spends far more time driving and managing projects, must stay two steps ahead with materials and communication, and needs the right people in the right roles to maintain quality. He answers audience questions about hiring experienced crew members with clean driving records, IQ saw blades, Deere vs. Kubota equipment and dealer support, running the business out of shipping containers for 10 years, and why he switched from Takeuchi to Kubota during COVID. He also discusses feeling overwhelmed by the volume of estimates and designs, and explains that if he started over he would still grow the company debt-free for long-term stability and family security.
On this episode of the Precision Farming Dealer Podcast, brought to you by Ag Express, we catch up with Layne Richins, chief technology officer for 24-store John Deere dealer Stotz Equipment.
Host and American Family Farmer, Doug Stephan www.eastleighfarm.com shares the biggest news affecting family farmers, starting with news the Trump administration is actively scaling back federal support for solar energy on farm land and shifting focus toward traditional energy sources. Policies include ending USDA grants for solar projects on prime farmland, imposing high tariffs on imported panels, and tightening tax credit deadlines, creating significant hurdles for rural developers. Despite these hurdles, developers in some areas are pushing forward, viewing large-scale projects as still viable due to high electricity demand, though the regulatory environment for solar has grown significantly more restrictive.Next up, Doug dives into the continued saga of John Deere's repair monopoly. John Deere has agreed to a $99 million settlement to resolve a 2022 class-action lawsuit accusing the company of violating "right to repair" laws by monopolizing repair services for its machinery. The settlement, pending final court approval in Illinois, provides compensation to farmers who paid for repairs from authorized dealers since 2018 and compels Deere to provide diagnostic tools and software for a decade. According to research groups, this has actually cost family farmers over $4 billion in repairs. Lastly, Doug opines on the latest tax season, how tariffs are affecting Americans more than others and what farmers can expect, and how farmers can stay in the game to support their farm when it's a whole new game now. After an introduction featuring Ryan Denis from the What the Futures podcast, John Deere's inaugural CTO, Jahmy Hindman, joins Evan and Kristjan for a conversation. They cut through the noise around AI and ag tech and get into what's actually changing on the farm. From his roots in Iowa to leading technology at Deere, Jahmy brings a practical lens to how data, machines, and decision-making are starting to come together. A big part of the conversation comes back to the gap between how much data farms have and how little of it turns into something useful. What does “good” actually look like? How should farms compare performance? And where does Deere fit as equipment shifts from standalone machines to systems that have to work together? They also spend time on the tension farms that they are feeling right now. Technology is moving fast, equipment is becoming more complex, and the way it's paid for is changing. Nothing about that is simple. This episode lays out where things are headed, where they're not, and what that means for how farms operate going forward.
While this settlement is nice, it will not resolve the conflict. Many people think it will take changes to state and federal laws to end the right-to-repair battle. https://www.lehtoslaw.com
In this episode of On the Record, brought to you by Associated Equipment Distributors, we have details on Deere agreeing to pay $99 million into a settlement fund for the right-to-repair class action lawsuit, and what this means for dealers as Eric Wareham discusses R2R legislation in states like Iowa.

This week, Caite and Arlene interview Neil Dahlstrom from the Quad Cities, an archivist at John Deere who manages historical records, collections, antique equipment, and corporate art; he says he cannot collect John Deere items personally due to ethics rules. Dahlstrom, who lacks a farming background, describes his path into archives and his interest in research and historical mysteries, while also “growing” his nearly 16-year-old son and new writing projects. He discusses his books: a Civil War press-freedom story (“Lincoln's Wrath”), a biography of John and Charles Deere (“The John Deere Story”), and “Tractor Wars” (1908–1928) on tractor origins and the roles of Ford, International Harvester, and Deere, including forgotten brands, fraud prompting standards like the Nebraska Test Lab, long adoption curves, and implement changes. He explains how “Tractor Wars” became an Iowa PBS documentary, and reflects on why history matters. Don't miss it!We're glad you're joining us for another episode of Barnyard Language. The 2026 Commodity Classic event attracted more than 12,000 farmers to sunny San Antonio for multiple days of trade shows, marketing workshops and big announcements from across the industry. Even U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins was in attendance, outlining the department's key priorities for the year, including trade progress, and elevating their new “One farmer, one file” initiative.Farmers, and DTN Progressive Farmer's Senior Editor Dan Miller, were eager to see the latest updates on technology, which were on full display around the show. And despite challenging commodity market conditions going into the new year, there was still plenty of excitement around equipment– especially when it comes to new and improved lines of tractors.Today, we'll hear all about this “year of the tractor” from Dan, and about Deere's effort to bring an E95 tractor — one that runs on 95% ethanol fuel — to market. Then we'll hear about the other big splashes made at the show, from the likes of CASE IH and New Holland, and learn about some award-winning innovations in the tillage and grain bin management space. We'll also dive into questions around economic strain, for equipment manufacturers themselves around tariffs, and for their customers. Then, we'll talk about the latest updates on the AI and autonomy fronts, including announcements made at Commodity Classic and at other recent events.
Chris McMahon thinks the U.S./Iran war will be short and expects two rate cuts from the Fed this year. When market broadening takes place, he thinks there's opportunity in companies outside the Mag 7, especially HALO (heavy assets, low obsolescence) stocks. He's excited around AI disruption and “loves” energy and raw materials, particularly rare earths and copper. Chris likes one of the Mag 7: Microsoft (MSFT). “This is the year for Microsoft,” he argues, expecting big returns. He also likes Deere & Co. (DE) and Siemens Energy (SMERY).======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Options involve risks and are not suitable for all investors. In this episode of Talk Dirt To Me, we discuss one of the things, for better or worse, that separates us from a lot of the voices in ag influence. We are willing to say things out loud that may not always be popular or sponsor-friendly. We dive into frustrations many farmers have with John Deere, including right to repair and the growing disconnect between corporate ag and life on the farm. We also talk about Bobby Lee's highly applauded comment on one of Deere's Instagram posts, a moment that probably did not help our chances of landing a sponsorship but struck a nerve with farmers across the country. From there, we shift to celebrity virtue signaling and why it rings hollow for working Americans. Billie Eilish and other celebrities come up as examples as we discuss how disconnected elite celebrity culture has become from real life, rural America, and economic pressure. We then get into the numbers farmers are actually facing. With the USDA projecting farm income to drop again in 2026, we break down what that means on the ground, why farmers are becoming more reliant on government payments just to survive, and why understanding true equipment cost per acre is no longer optional. We also challenge the long-held idea that running equipment too long is always a bad decision, and why in today's high-interest, high-depreciation environment, holding onto iron longer may actually be the smarter move. We wrap the episode with our Made in USA highlight featuring Dobbins Lures, a North Carolina-based company producing American-made animal lures for trappers who still value craftsmanship, effectiveness, and products built by people who understand the outdoors. *Go Vote for us on the Tipton County Farm Bureau Women in Ag's poll: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfHbLDGeM06rLZG42WW_ps2CrgS0ktjILFeP3bSaQFdQOeQFQ/viewform Go check out Agzaga!
