Islander frontman Mikey Carvajal celebrates the band's new album, 'Grammy Nominated,' and holds nothing back when he discusses artists who don't write their own songs.
Islander jumped on the hard rock scene around 2014, and the band and Mikey became some of my favorites. After a couple of top 20 rock hits the road has been a bit bumpy for the band, but now they are doing it their way and are pumping out the heaviest songs of their career. With a new album on the way June 28th called Grammy Nominated which was completely fan-funded they are ready to bring their message of love to the masses.
Joined by Mikey Carvajal of the band Islander, Johnny navigates through wrestling, murder and music on this weeks episode of Drinks with Johnny. The two talk about how Mikey is involved in the Whosoever Foundation and becoming a teacher and mentor to Jonathan Davis of Korn's son through the program. We also hear about the new forthcoming album scheduled to release June 28th, Grammy Nominated and the single Ritual of Death. A song inspired by the famed West Memphis Three and the “unsolved” murder from the 90's. Mikey shares his passion to bring awareness to this crime and how he related to the three teenagers from a small town not too different from his own. Taking us through the origin of his band to the newest release coming independently, and what that means for them in the music industry. With a few member changes along the way, Islander has been putting out music for a while now and toured with many bands - including Avenged Sevenfold, which is how we get to how these two musicians came together for this chat!Become a FILTHY ANIMAL and get access to exclusive content:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2qKyxOwoa_Uz5d5xCZEUPw/joinExplore More Drinks With Johnny:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/drinkswithjohnnyInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/drinkswithjohnnyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/drinkswithjohnnyTwitter: https://twitter.com/drinkswjohnnyShop: https://www.drinkswithjohnny.com
Mikey and Johnny continue to walk down memory lane together, and discuss their at times mutual drummer Arin Ilejay. Arin toured with and recorded the 2013 album Hail to the King with Johnny and Avenged Sevenfold as well as Islander's 2016 release Power Under Control. The two reminisce on their individual experiences with Arin as well as the crossover triangle that tie them together. Speaking of crossover, we get a little inside look on how Mikey became friends with "The Icon" Sting and what pro wrestling means to him. The guys share their affinity for Sting and the eras he graced our televisions with, and when Mikey and Johnny ran into each other at the Greensboro Coliseum in March to witness his last match ever. From NWA to WCW to WWE and AEW these wrestling fans find themselves feeling like teenagers again sharing in the memories. Welcome back UMMPod Nation!! We are so stoked for this week's show! Today's episode features one of the best rock bands to ever come out of the Upstate... Islander!!It's been a long time coming, as we featured Islander in our inaugural year, exactly 4 seasons ago (S1E6)! As we discuss during the interview, we've known the front-man of Islander, Mikey Carvajal, since the early days of middle school. And we loved taking trips down memory lane in the first episode, which we reference during our interview this week. More importantly, we dive into some of Islander's material from their most recent, independent record that dropped a couple months ago... and let me tell you folks, this album absolutely smashes it!Mikey gives us the rundown and background story on both featured tracks today: "Serpents and Daggers", and "Witch".After another great chat with Mikey, we wrap up and conclude the show as we normally do with our 'This Day in Music' segment.Another great episode in the books!! Thank you to all our sponsors, supporters, and of course, You!! We love you UMMPod Nation!Support the show
Mikey Carvajal of Islander Stops by to remind us to find your passion. Find your passion and do it because you love it .
This week, we're scratching The Itch to finish what we started... maybe. Mikey Carvajal of Islander had a beautiful homecoming of sorts on Shiprocked, and he was kind enough to join us to share his story. We also dive into the origins of his face paint (but NOT the origins of "Coconut Dracula"), being asked to fill in for your musical hero, and what it's like to not be told that your label has dropped you... all while trying not to talk exclusively about wrestling! Mikey has so much insight on the ups and downs of the music industry, and the integrity to share his band's struggles without bitterness. This conversation went in directions we didn't expect, and we hope you enjoy it. If you like what you hear, you can hear more of us every Sunday night broadcasting rock to the masses from 6-9pm CST on KCLC-FM.
