This week, we're scratching The Itch to party! KC's birthday week was stacked with shows featuring podcast guests, and The Itch got to see plenty of them! First, KC and Aaron catch Boston Manor at the Subterranean in Chicago on their first ever US headline tour, with a diverse supporting trio of Farmer's Wife, Spaced, and Ellis. Then they swing over to the Bottom Lounge to see Ocean Grove supporting Thornhill with Avoid and Banks Arcade. Aaron somehow manages to turn two shows into one on the same night, creating a lineup where Hot Milk and Savage Hands ultimately open for Pop Evil. And finally, KC and Dan catch Gore. at Delmar Hall in St. Louis as they support Of Mice & Men and Until I Wake. It was a lot. And it was awesome. Enjoy. This week, we're scratching The Itch for a homecoming! Arya Goggin of Skindred was our second ever interview, back in November 2020. To celebrate 5 years as a podcast, the man who drums on our theme song makes his long overdue return to keep our weekly interview streak going. We've spoken at length about the huge role Skindred plays in The Itch's story, so Arya was the perfect choice. And he brings not only a great memory of his experiences in St. Louis (and our previous conversation), but the amazing story of Skindred's unexpected grassroots ascent to the top of the UK music charts with their most recent album Smile, plus a side project he hopes the world eventually hears, and a surprising percussion instrument that might make an appearance on Skindred's completed ninth album. It's our podcast anniversary and this month we're scratching The Itch to celebrate! The Itch Rock Podcast debuted on May 9th, 2020, originally under the name "Rock Matters". What started as a replacement for our radio show when lockdown closed the station has now become a 5-year journey that's taken us across the country, the podcast world, and even into international waters all in the name of rock. Now, 300+ audio offerings (including 100+ artist interviews) later, we're going strong on our longest weekly interview streak to date. We'll be celebrating this month by bringing back some of our favorite guests and seeing many more in concert. To start the party, we're combining two features that were staples of our earlier shows but have become less frequent as we've focused on talking with our favorite artists: Short Cuts and games. This not-quite-a-full-episode bit was recorded shortly after our conversation with John Cooper of Skillet, when Aaron went down a deep, dorky rabbit whole of bands you could find in the kitchen. The nu metal revival is alive and well in 2025, so much so, that iconic bands from that era are returning to delight long-term fans, while gaining a whole new audience who have yet to experience them. One such band is Northamptonshire, UK's Defenestration. A five-piece who were active between 1999 – 2004, releasing three studio albums (One Inch God – 2001 / Ray Zero – 2003 / For Us it Ends When We Drown – 2004) and one split EP, (Year of the Slug with Scurge – 2002). Not only that, but they also toured all over the world with the likes of Raging Speedhorn, Napalm Death, Biffy Clyro, The Wildhearts, Skindred, and so many more iconic bands. So popular were they, that they opened the Wembley Arena leg of the 2001 'Tattoo the Planet Tour'. A set of shows that included Cradle of Filth, Static-X, Biohazard, Slayer and Pantera. Twenty years after their last live performance as Defenestration, the original members reunited for a ‘one-off' performance. Supporting Raging Speedhorn, the show was to raise money for record producer Russ Russell who was unable to work due to illness. This would be followed by another benefit gig for Russ Russell later in August 2024, Defenestration's first headline show since 2004. The itch was back, and another set of shows with Raging Speedhorn all but confirmed that there was a desire for Defenestration to return as an active band. Which is where we find ourselves now. Defenestration has reformed, is under new management, and is in the process of solidifying their legacy, while looking to the future too. This is what we discuss with vocalist Gen Tasker, getting excited about what the future might bring, while also spending plenty of time look back at their immense history too.
