In Episode 103 of A is for Architecture, Aaron Betsky discusses his recent book The Monster Leviathan: Anarchitecture, published by MIT Press in January this year. Until recently Professor in the School of Architecture and Design at Virginia Tech, and with previous roles as the President of the School of Architecture at Taliesin, director of the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Netherlands Architecture Institute, Curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the author of over 20 books. Aaron directed the Venice architecture biennale in 2008 and now operates as an independent scholar. The Monster Leviathan describes an architecture ‘lurking under the surface of our modern world […] an unseen architecture—or anarchitecture […] which haunts in the form of monsters that are humans and machines and cities all at once' which Betsky suggests ‘are concrete proposals in and of themselves' and which indicate to us now ways we might ‘construct a better, more sustainable, and socially just future'. Aaron is on Instagram and LinkedIn and all over the internet, because he's proper famous. Thanks for listening. + Music credits: Bruno Gillick

ABOUT THE BOOK - BABY MOSES After years away, Moses is visiting Miss Clio, the woman who found him as a baby in a basket on a creek mudbank. Harve and Enos are a couple of hardscrabble losers making time at the local Grain & Feed. They need nineteen dollars to pay back the boys at the V.F.W. so they can get back in Friday night's card game. Their plan: grab a shotgun and rob a Black church during Sunday service. This story is about seven church robberies, the Chicken Shack, pipe tobacco, a double-barrel shotgun, a library book, the Dicks cousins, a flat rock by a creek, three bus tickets, a granary, a bag of MoonPies, an Italian piano factory, the Colonel, four dollars in pennies, a cellar, dusty jackweed, Charlie's Roadside Diner, a swamp shanty, Sergeant Isaac “Catfish” Dudley, hot peppers, a poker game, the Klan, and one pipe wrench. ABOUT THE AUTHOR John Cowlin's second book is Baby Moses. His previous book was Monster City. He has been an educator for more than 25 years.
A classic tale of love and loss in Monster City. Or that's not the plot at all. This was a bad movie and I've tried to wipe it from my mind; your guess at the story is as good as mine at this point.
What an awesome time it was to have James A. Powell from Monster City Studios on the show. If you aren't familiar with James, you sure are familiar with his San Juan Central Model Railroad, formerly owned by Malcom Furlow. In addition to working to restore the San Juan Central, James had been busy at Monster City Studios and creating some awesome YouTube videos which you need to check out here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCD092dInyTpPdBn-8fb0jHw There is also a cool tool that James and his team have been pumping out for the scale modeling world called the BRICK MONSTER which you can check out here: https://www.maskandshield.com/brick-monster/. This tool lets you quickly make brick walls out of sculpy in a matter of minutes! It was a blast talking to James about his history in the scale modeling hobby (of all scales) and we can't wait to get him back on again in the near future to talk about more techniques!
