Chris Pratt's new movie takes us into a time where if you've been accused of a violent crime, no lawyer and no jury for you! “Mercy” is about a new AI criminal justice system that uses its super-duper AI powers to play judge, jury and executioner to those accused of violent crime. The accused are locked into a chair and sit face to face with the Mercy AI system which appears in the form of Rebecca Ferguson who looks better than most judges you'll deal with. The accused then has 90 minutes to prove their innocence, and has the AI power of Mercy at their fingertips to do so. It's a cinematic interpretation of the saying “Someone who is their own lawyer has a fool for a client.” In this movie's case, Pratt is a detective so he's got a bit of criminal investigation experience and he puts it to use after he's the one in the Mercy chair, accused of killing his wife. He gets to look through all the evidence. Call anyone in the law enforcement community and they'll go anywhere you need them to in order to find clues, leads, etc. As Pratt leads this investigation to clear himself, he uncovers a sinister plot. Is it worth finding out more in the theater? Watch this episode to find out! “Mercy” also stars Annabelle Wallis, Chris Sullivan, Kali Reis, Kylie Rogers, Jeff Pierre, Rafi Gavron, Kenneth Choi, Jamie McBride and Ross Gosla. This month on The Film Board, Pete Wright drags Andy Nelson, Tommy Metz III, and Steve Sarmento into an emergency bonus hearing because Andy texted, essentially, “We can't skip a month. Also I found a movie.” That movie is Mercy, a slick, noisy, deeply committed screenlife thriller where Chris Pratt wakes up strapped into a futuristic execution-chair-courtroom and has 90 minutes to prove he didn't kill his wife. The judge is an AI who looks like Rebecca Ferguson. Which is frankly unfair to every other AI.From there, it's a full-spoilers sprint through a world where justice is software, surveillance is just “normal life,” and every single camera on Earth is apparently pointed at exactly the wrong moment. The panel fights over what Mercy thinks it's doing (a cautionary tale about AI and institutions) versus what it actually does (a pulpy, coincidence-powered ride that occasionally forgets its own premise and wanders off toward terrorism and explosions).Andy is… not having it. Steve is torn in the way only a lover of scrappy sci-fi concepts can be: “It's messy, but I'm intrigued.” Tommy—who walked in expecting bargain-bin January nonsense—ends up delighted, especially after an accidental 3D screening turns the whole thing into a theme-park attraction where the chair is the main character. Pete tries to keep the court metaphor alive long enough to pronounce a verdict, but keeps getting distracted by the movie's most dangerous idea: not the AI, but the assumption that the only way to get “justice” is if the system can see literally everything. Also: yes, we talk about the wind. The screens have wind.Watch & DiscoverWatch Now: Apple TV | Amazon | LetterboxdOriginal Theatrical Trailer Support The Next Reel Family of Film Shows:Become a member for just $5/month or $55/yearJoin our Discord community of movie loversThe Next Reel Family of Film Shows:Cinema Scope: Bridging Genres, Subgenres, and MovementsThe Film BoardMovies We LikeThe Next ReelSitting in the DarkConnect With Us:Main Site: WebMovie Platforms: Letterboxd | FlickchartSocial Media: Facebook | Instagram | Threads | Bluesky | YouTube | PinterestYour Hosts: Pete | JJ | Steve | Tommy | Andy | Ocean Shop & Stream:Merch Store: Apparel, stickers, mugs & moreWatch Page: Buy/rent films we've discussedOriginals: Source material from our episodesSpecial offers: Audible

Movie Mike and Kelsey break down the nominees for the 98th Academy Awards. Complete with predictions, snubs and surprises they feel are a slap in the face. In the Movie Review, Mike gives his thoughts on Mercy starring Chris Pratt. It takes place in the near future, where a detective stands trial accused of murdering his wife. He has 90 minutes to prove his innocence to the advanced A.I. Judge he once championed, before it determines his fate. Mike shares the one redeeming quality of the movie, why Chris Pratt was fighting for his life and why the story almost put him to sleep. In the Trailer Park, Mike talks about Crime 101 starring Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo. Chris Pratt plays an elusive thief who teams up with an insurance broker for one last heist while an LA detective tries to track him down. Welcome back to another unforgettable episode of the Wise_N_Nerdy podcast, where hosts Charles and Joe once again blend fandom fun with real-life fatherhood wisdom. This week's adventure kicks off with the classic Question of the Week: If you could be a cartoon character for a week, who would you be? Joe dives headfirst into the world of anime by choosing Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist, embracing alchemy, sacrifice, and epic character growth. Meanwhile, Charles goes full power fantasy by picking Sung Jin-woo from Solo Leveling, imagining a week of leveling up, shadow armies, and unstoppable strength. With the ceremonial roll of the dice setting the tone, the show jumps straight into “What Are You Nerding Out About?” Joe shares his recent reading marathon, revealing that since Christmas he powered through books 3–7 of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinniman. He describes the experience as an intense and wildly entertaining ride, while strongly reminding listeners that this series is definitely not kid-friendly. Charles balances things out with some tasty real-world wins, nerding out over all-you-can-eat sushi and his surprise movie night watching Mercy starring Chris Pratt through AMC's Screen Unseen program. Next, the dice unleash everyone's favorite groan-worthy segment: Bad Dad Jokes. With jokes supplied by Devocite and one delivered by Joe about a woman who completes 40 weeks of bodybuilding, laughter and eye-rolls abound in classic Wise_N_Nerdy fashion. The fun then turns practical with the “How Do I…?” segment, where Charles and Joe open up about their personal experiences planning for retirement. From long-term thinking to balancing family needs and future goals, the conversation offers relatable insight for parents navigating adult responsibilities while still geeking out. Storytime arrives with “Daddy, Tell Me A Story,” and Charles delivers a gripping tale from his teenage years in the Civil Air Patrol, involving a surplus base and some questionable “souvenir collecting.” It's part nostalgia, part cautionary tale, and completely entertaining. Finally, the episode wraps up with a thoughtful Parliament of Papas discussion: At what age is it appropriate to let kids have social media accounts? Charles and Joe break down the pros, cons, safety concerns, and real-world parenting challenges that come with raising kids in a digital age. It's the perfect blend of humor, heart, and honest conversation that reminds listeners why they tune in every week to Find your FAMdom with this dynamic duo. This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees Chris Hewitt sit down with two wonderful guests — first, we strap Chris Pratt to a chair (metaphorically speaking, that is) and ask him about his new thriller, Mercy, in which he does battle with an A.I. judge played by Rebecca Ferguson; [25:50 - 40:14 approx] and then Claire Foy, star of this week's moving drama, H Is For Hawk, drops by the office to talk about working with goshawks and Gleeson, Brendan. [1:13:07 - 1:32:55 approx] Both are delights, we're sure you'll agree. Either side of those, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer and, briefly, Beth Webb for a fun episode in which they reveal their specialist subject on Mastermind, discuss great movie doctors, review No Other Choice, Saipan, Mercy, The History Of Sound, and H Is For Hawk, and go all-in on Oscar nominations discussion in a bumper-sized movie news section. It's all here, apart from the bits we cut out. Enjoy!
It's Oscar nominations week, so we're playing catch up as well as slogging through some extremely January movies. We recorded these reviews before Thursday's Academy announcement, so we have a couple of updates for you: Amanda Seyfried didn't get a nomination for "The Testament of Ann Lee," but "Come See Me in the Good Light" did make it into the documentary feature category. Here's what we discussed: MERCY. Chris Pratt is a police detective accused of killing his wife in a futuristic hellscape of Los Angeles. He has 90 minutes to prove his innocence before an AI judge (Rebecca Ferguson) or he'll be executed. We debate exactly what this Amazon release is propaganda for, but agree that it (and Pratt) are terrible. In theaters. THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE. Amanda Seyfried IS Ann Lee, found of the Shaker religious movement, in director and co-writer Mona Fastvold's ambitious musical. This had a brief awards run at the end of 2025 and is returning to theaters this weekend. The song and dance numbers are mesmerizing. COME SEE ME IN THE GOOD LIGHT. The late poet Andrea Gibson is the subject of this intimate documentary, which is alternately hilarious and heartbreaking but always stirring. Director Ryan White follows the genderqueer Gibson and their partner as they navigate a lengthy and painful cancer battle, but there's plenty of room for humor and even hope. Streaming on Apple TV. Dow Drops 700. Don't Protest Inside a Church. Oil From Venezuela Ships. Chris Pratt or Lindsey Vonn for MN Gov? Impeach Trump. Indiana an Example for America. Measles Is Back. ICE Crosses Another Line. Independent Americans host Paul Rieckhoff returns with an unfiltered conversation cutting through the turmoil of Trump's America, a Greenland crisis, and a shaken NATO to focus on a pivotal political battle: Mississippi's independent U.S. Senate candidate, Ty Pinkins. From New York to the Mississippi Delta, Rieckhoff explores how this historic campaign could disrupt Washington's balance of power—without a Democrat or Republican label. Pinkins shares what he's heard across all 82 Mississippi counties, where voters are rejecting “the same two parties saying the same things.” A Black combat veteran and Delta native, he's emerging as a serious challenge to an entrenched MAGA incumbent. He shatters the myth of “splitting the vote” in a state where Republicans have dominated for decades and argues that independents now represent the most energized political force in the country. Rieckhoff and Pinkins also connect the global stakes—from Trump's destructive foreign moves on Greenland, NATO, and Venezuela—to local crises like hospital closures, job losses, and political neglect across Mississippi. Drawing from his deployments and three-year grassroots tour, Pinkins outlines an independent message built on courage, accountability, and inclusion, aimed at uniting a multiracial, multigenerational coalition ready to redefine Mississippi—and America's—political future. Because every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff breaks down the most important news stories--and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows.
