David Crowley beat Francesca Hong by half a point. Peggy Flanagan won Minnesota by 20. Same night, opposite answers about where the party is going.Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley took the Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial primary over democratic socialist state Rep. Francesca Hong in a nail biter that broke past 2 a.m. Brian had been telling anyone who would listen that Crowley was winning while prediction markets had Hong at 96 percent, and he takes the victory lap. His read on why: no AOC, no Bernie, no Warren, no signature policy that broke through, and a cancel Thanksgiving clip nobody could unsee. Glennis brings in the other variable, Megan Romer, one of the DSA's two national chairs, whose New Yorker Radio Hour sit down with David Remnick got clipped into oblivion days before Wisconsin voted. Also: five of nine Milwaukee flash drives showed up at central count carrying audit logs instead of results, and Steve Kornacki had to fill 90 minutes of live NBC air with nothing. Then the rest of the board. Peggy Flanagan beat Angie Craig by roughly 20 points in Minnesota, and Brian argues that race teaches 2028 more than Wisconsin does. Luke Bronin ended John Larson's 28 year run in Connecticut's 1st, the seventh House incumbent to lose after actually running, five of them over 70. South Carolina's special Senate primary heads to an August 25 runoff between Rep. Ralph Norman and appointed Sen. Darline Graham. Mike Lindell lost Minnesota's Republican gubernatorial primary to House Speaker Lisa Demuth and would not concede. David Crowley is your Oath Candidate of the Week, and he is starting from zero with a general election against Rep. Tom Tiffany in November.Plus AOC telling Jonathan Karl on ABC's This Week that "Woke 1 was crazy," and the real question underneath it: can somebody who was loud during Woke 1 be the 2028 nominee? Brian says the jury is out. Glennis says yes and names her candidate. Then the economy, where July CPI landed at 3.4 percent, the July jobs report came in at negative 23,000 against expectations near 85,000 with another 103,000 knocked off May and June, and workers' share of national income sits at its lowest point since tracking began in 1947. Also this week for Clickbait or Double-Click: Trump slipping off Air Force One into an airport catering truck in Ankara while the press flew the decoy, Mamdani backing Tiffany Cabán's Delivery Protection Act to force Amazon to directly employ its delivery drivers, and the New York Times piece on Flock cameras that has liberals and conservatives mad at the same thing. Then a Good Vibe Goodbye where a guy on the Brooklyn Museum steps asks Mamdani to find him a date and the mayor's office answers with a borough by borough summer guide for anyone looking for cheap and cheerful dates in NYC.UPDATE: This episode was recorded Wednesday morning, August 12, 2026, while Wisconsin votes were still being counted. Lakewood Elementary School Consolidation Controversy For several years now, Lakewood City School District has been looking into consolidating its school buildings, due to declining enrollment, but that effort has recently resulted in a lawsuit settlement that has taken officials back to the drawing board. As public schools around the country face similar considerations, leaders in Lakewood say the district has seen a decrease of roughly 2,400 students since 2003. Despite the decrease, consolidation discussions have become heated, with the Friends of Lakewood Schools group suing the district over the manner in which plans were established for the repurposing of Lincoln Elementary School, with the district's hope to turn it into a child development center. That lawsuit was recently settled, putting that plan on pause for the time being. On Tuesday's episode of the "Sound of Ideas" hosted by Stephanie Haney, Ideastream Public Media's education reporter Conor Morris shares what the lawsuit settlement means for the future of Lincoln Elementary School. These are just some of the things that have happened on other editions of August 8 throughout recent time. There has only been one regular edition of Charlottesville Community Engagement in the six years since publication began so when you're done here go back and time travel. In this edition:* Charlottesville to hire outside groups to manage emergency shelter and encampment clearance (read the story)* Voices speak out against upcoming ending of Rivanna River encampments (read the story)* Charlottesville City Manager Sam Sanders explains how 2000 Holiday Drive is just part of the city's response to homelessness (read the story)* Albemarle EDA to support classes to assist wine industry learn new techniques after difficult spring (read the story)* More people using Ivy Solid Waste and Recycling Center (read the story)Behind the scenes of #1104-AOnce again, the time it takes to put together the audio podcast ends up being much longer than it should be. Throughout the week as I am writing stories, I keep track of them in a spreadsheet. One of the columns indicates whether the story has a sound element to it. Not all stories come from meetings, but those that do are fodder for both the WTJU radio show as well as this podcast version. For 650 editions or so, the newsletter and the podcast for one and the same. The reason there's an anecdote at the moment is to serve as something the listener would hear to get used to my voice. It's a way I personalize the newsletter and try to offer something more than just the information.I learn so much in the course of doing that research and I've kept writing them because doing so wakes up my brain and gets me ready for the work of finishing the newsletter. There are currently no plans to reunify the newsletter and the podcast because the audience interested in the sonic product is much smaller. I can imagine a time when there's a partnership with a radio station or other production company to produce this work. Right now I'm very to be working with WTJU and glad the radio version was named Best News Program this year by the Alliance for Community Media. If you've never heard one of these before, this is a good place to start. The segments are much longer than you're going to hear anywhere else, and I think that's incredibly important to have an alternative. This particular edition is a 30 minute summary of one of the most difficult issues of our time. It hits differently when you hear people's voices. Now, time to produce it so I can get on with the rest of the week. Thank you for reading or listening. And now the cut-and-paste bit intended to get your help in getting more eyes on the stories:* I post stories over at BlueSky but don't really do much else than that at this point. Here's the account for Information Charlottesville.* You can also subscribe to get Information Charlottesville postings via email Wordpress. This is where I confess I don't entirely know the link for this. Might be a pop-up?* Town Crier Productions has a Facebook page but I'm really not sure if it's worth keeping as the site doesn't really seem to like Substack material. Or Wordpress material. In six years of doing this, I've never had a post “go viral” and I think it's all throttled. I don't pay them any money anymore* And then there's Instagram which gets a couple of likes every now and then though I am really bad at images! This is a public episode. US President Donald Trump announced Thursday that his Board of Peace had reached an agreement on the “complete disarmament of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza.” We learn how this deal was brought to the table this week and who was behind it, as well as the expected rollout of Hamas laying down its weapons and potential reconstruction in Gaza. Magid delves into what has actually been agreed by Hamas in the meantime -- and what its conditions for Israel are. At recording time, official Israel is still mum; however, murmurings of discontent and dissent are growing. What are Israel's claims? Magid explains that the proposal would see Hamas gradually hand over its weapons to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, the Board of Peace-overseen panel of Palestinian technocrats that is tasked with replacing the terror group in governing the Strip. Who could be other potential players in the Strip? Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. Former Attorney General Pam Bondi is now set to sit for a closed-door deposition before the House Oversight Committee on May 29, after initially refusing to comply with a subpoena tied to the investigation into the Justice Department's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Her earlier no-show triggered escalating pressure from lawmakers—particularly Democrats—who moved toward contempt proceedings, arguing that she had defied Congress and was avoiding accountability. That pressure ultimately forced a reversal, with Bondi agreeing to testify despite prior claims from the Justice Department that she was no longer obligated to appear after being removed from her position. The deposition centers on growing bipartisan concerns over how the DOJ managed the release of Epstein-related records under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, including missed deadlines, controversial redactions, and allegations that sensitive victim information was mishandled while powerful individuals may have been shielded. Bondi's role in overseeing that process has drawn intense scrutiny, with lawmakers and survivors questioning whether the department fully complied with the law or obscured key details. Her testimony is expected to be a critical moment in the broader congressional probe into whether the government's handling of the Epstein files reflects incompetence, political maneuvering, or something more deliberate.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Bondi will sit for deposition in House Oversight Epstein probe | CNN PoliticsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.
