Sophie and James run Needy Cat Games - a tabletop game studio based in Nottingham, UK. As a studio they have a nearly unique model - designing games on demand for clients with IPs, miniatures and other assets rather than pitching their work to publishers. In this conversation we talk about how the studio model works, the so-called Kickstarter treadmill, how creativity arises from well constructed project briefs and the future of the game market. Oh my, here's a blast from the past! Originally released in May 2019, this is Episode Zero of the Finding Games podcast, which was originally released as an exclusive at www.patreon.com/needycatgames. To keep the stakes low, Sophie interviewed James (the other half of Needy Cat Games). It's a pretty rambly chat, the audio quality's a bit poor, and Sophie's (undeservedly!) nervous about her interviewing skills. But it's still a fun chat, and it's a great chance to see how far we've come! We hope you enjoy it - and Merry Christmas :) Sophie and James Music from filmmusic.io (incompetech.com): "The Show Must Be Go" by Kevin MacLeod “Happy Boy End Theme” by Kevin MacLeod Licence: CC BY (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)

Boom! Back from our unannounced hiatus, it's Episode 8 of the Finding Games podcast! As ever, we're talking to someone who works in or around the tabletop games industry to find out how they got there... but in celebration of our triumphant return, this episode's a little different. Sophie Williams is normally our host, but this time around she's moving to the other side of the desk and being interviewed by Needy Cat Games co-conspirator James Hewitt. Needy Cat Games is a family business that's been running since July 2017, and offers bespoke game design services, runs tabletop industry networking events, hosts a podcast (clue: it's this one) and runs game design courses. Among other things. Basically, we don't stop. Episode Three of the "Finding Games", a podcast by the people behind Needy Cat Games which showcases talented individuals from the tabletop industry and finds out how they ended up doing such a weird job. In Episode Three, Sophie catches up with our old friend Nathan Dowdell, who's been writing roleplaying games professionally for the best part of a decade. He cut his teeth on Warhammer 40,000 roleplaying games like Black Crusade and Only War, before working for Modiphius on Mutant Chronicles Third Edition. He must have done something right as he's now the lead developer for their 2d20 system, where his work has included the award-winning Star Trek Adventures. Episode Two of the "Finding Games", a podcast by the people behind Needy Cat Games which showcases talented individuals from the tabletop industry and finds out how they ended up doing such a weird job. In Episode Two, Sophie has a chat with Matt Jarvis. Since 2016 Matt has been the editor of Tabletop Gaming, the UK’s leading magazine and website about board games, card games, miniatures and RPGs. The magazine was launched in the summer of 2015 and has since exploded in popularity, going from quarterly to bi-monthly and, most recently, monthly, accompanied by a redesign and, this year, exclusive subscriber benefits including artwork covers, discounts and promo gifts. The magazine features in-depth interviews and features with the people who make games, reviews of the latest releases, hobby tips and much, much more, while tabletopgaming.co.uk hosts daily news and up-to-date coverage of the hobby. In September 2018, Tabletop Gaming launched its first Tabletop Gaming Live convention in London’s Alexandra Palace, giving visitors the chance to play upcoming games, take part in tournaments and hear from creators in talks, workshops and seminars. The convention is back in Alexandra Palace this September 28th and 29th; tickets are on sale now via The Ticket Factory. Before he wrote about tabletop games, Matt was a video game and technology journalist. His greatest honour remains being named Best Painter in his middle-school Warhammer club. He also owns a needy cat of his own – her name is Holly, she is missing a fang and she snores like a beast. Episode One of the "Finding Games", a podcast by the people behind Needy Cat Games which showcases talented individuals from the tabletop industry and finds out how they ended up doing such a weird job. In Episode One, Sophie strolls down the hall to talk to Needy Cat Neighbour Annie Norman, a.k.a. Bad Squiddo Games. Annie's had a really unusual career path by normal standards, but as you'll see as this series progresses it's more normal than you might think in this industry! Welcome to The Weekender for this week where we've got Needy Cat Games talking about their new project alongside author George Mann for a Newbury & Hobbes tabletop game! Make sure to get involved in the comments as we're going to be giving away a copy of Warhammer 40,000: Shadowspear when it gets released by Games Workshop. God Emperor Trump It bodes terribly for the world if this ever comes to pass, but we look at the satirical look at Donald Trump that popped up this week in Italy. I'm sure that Trump will see it as something awesome (since he is rather feeble minded) but it would be terrible if he became our God Emperor! International Innovation Day We want you to tell us your thoughts on what the next big innovation might be within the tabletop industry. This could be something that you think could be coming in the next few years or potentially further down the line. Make sure to drop your comments below as we'll be picking from these to find our competition winner this week! News We take a peek at some of the news from this week... Shadowspear - We're looking at the big new Battlebox coming soon from Games Workshop Punkapocalyptic - Check out the two-player Starter Set from Bad Roll Games KeyForge - A new set of cards are dropping for the Unique Card Game Ragnarok - Get ready for full on heavy metal Viking combat! Star Wars: Outer Rim - Do you like the idea of this new board game? D&D Stranger Things - An awesome new box is coming where you play through the adventure the kids planned! What caught your eye from the news? Newbury & Hobbes Game Announcement! Needy Cat Games and George Mann are joining forces to create a new board game based on the hit book series. Mann will be writing the narrative elements of this Steampunk sleuthing game which features mysteries and investigations that branch out into an expanding story. Kickstarter We take a peek at two projects live on Kickstarter. Bring History Into Your Home - A great array of 2D standees for Historical wargaming PARKS: The Board Game - Wander the wonderful national parks of America and collect mementos Which of these two will you be backing? Competition - Win Warhammer 40,000: Shadowspear! We want you to talk about innovation in the comments and if you're picked you'll get the new Battlebox from the team at Games Workshop featuring Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines. We also have the winner from last week's show who got their hands on a copy of Carrion Empire. You can check to see if you won HERE and Claim Your Prize. Have a great weekend!
This week I talk to James Hewitt formally of Games Workshop & Mantic, but most recently stepping out with his own company Needy Cat Games. I am not going to list his works, we talk about those during the show but what I will say is that it is fantastic to see him forging ahead with his own company and my biggest take away from the chat is that James is a great bloke and he is highly thought of by a great many people within the industry. One final thing about James is that his most recent work, Hellboy by Mantic Games comes out onto Kick Starter next week, from the 25th of April 2018. It looks really really good, and no doubt with James behind the wheel in terms of rules direction it is going to be a fun game. If you want to know more about hellboy after this show then go back and listen to episode 57 with Ronnie Renton, we talk about it more in there. We wish it every success. In which Mike and Matt are joined by James Hewitt, ex GW designer, to talk about his new venture Needy Cat Games. We cover his gaming background, his thoughts on where the industry is at the moment and what its like leaving the safety blanket that working for GW gets you. Obviously us being us the conversation then goes down several different paths, often at the same time as we discover what he's playing at the moment, gaming tropes / mechanics he likes, things like that. Oh and we also find out his views on Dark Knight (wrong) and GoTG2 (right). As an aside huge congratulations to Gav on his Gemmel, very well deserved.
