The Supreme Court has been hearing arguments about President Trump's executive order trying to end birthright citizenship, which has been paused by numerous federal courts. Law professor and former U.S. attorney Kim Wehle joins us. Then, Sen. Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin, explains why he thinks House leaders should cut more from the spending plan they are drawing up, and why it won't pass in the U.S. Senate if they don't. And, the Trump administration reduced tariffs against China from 145% to 30% over the weekend. The lowered rate elapses after 90 days. One board game designer is still suing the administration over its ability to levy these tariffs and argues that the trade chaos is hurting his industry. We hear from Jamey Stegmaier, president of Stonemaier Games.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
The Pacific Legal Foundation has filed a lawsuit on behalf of Stonemaier Games and other small business plaintiffs challenging the legality of recently applied tariffs on Chinese imports. The lawsuit, detailed in an April 30, 2025 article, argues that President Biden's use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose these tariffs […]

Hey hey BATT Family! We had an incredible opportunity to sit down with Jamey Stegmaier from Stonemaier Games to discuss the current tariff situation, how it effects his business and the larger gaming industry as a whole, and some of the solutions he thinks could make the situation easier for everybody. We had a little bit over a half hour of his time and we stuck pretty closely to that. We have edited this conversation for clarity's sake, but other than that the conversation is presented as it was recorded. Scott and Mark were at the BATT studio in Indiana and Jamey joined in remotely from his office in St. Louis. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about what was discussed here, please feel free to reach out! --- Notes! 1) Jamey did provide his article that he researched supply chain labour certification. It is located here, https://stonemaiergames.com/how-can-we-fix-this-together-tariffs-manufacturing-and-a-solution/, and you can find all of his sources within that link. --- You can email us at boardallthetimegaming@gmail.com. Stonemaier Games, a major US-based tabletop game publisher known for hits like Wingspan and Scythe, has joined a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump in response to new US tariffs on Chinese imports. Tabletop game makers Stonemaier Games are SUING President Trump over the tariffs on Chinese imports that jacked their production costs 145%. Will this mean the collapse of many geek hobby businesses? Toys, games and comics depend on China for cheap products, and many of the components literally cannot be manufactured here.

This week we are joined by Tamsyn to discuss Stamp Swap from Stonemaier Games. This is a tile placement game with a unique mechanism of "I cut, you choose" meaning you take all of the tiles you collected, and before you place them on the board, you separate them into two separate piles. You take a pile from another player and they will take one of yours and those are the tiles you get to play onto your mat! It is a unique mechanism but is it enough to justify another tile placement game in your library? Listen to find out! In episode 26, we review Finspan by Stonemaier Games. To start off the episode, we chat about the games that are bringing us joy: The Guild of Merchant Explorers, Root, Arcs, and Baseball Highlights: 2045.You are a marine researcher seeking to observe aquatic life at different depths of the world's seas and oceans over the course of four weeks, or in-game rounds. To do so, you'll be exploring three different dive sites that specialize in different aspects of expanding your research: growing the collection of fish, discovering freshly laid eggs, and hatching eggs into young and consolidating to form schools of fish. Each dive site grants resources that will allow you to discover fish by providing their needed provisions or conditions, which could include discarding cards from hand, discarding eggs, and/or consuming young fish or other shorter fish in the ocean. Complete end-of-week objectives and keep discovering fish to become the most successful marine researcher! The homies have now played all three games in the Wingspan universe, and we each rank them differently!Connect with us @ https://lnk.bio/BoardGameHomies

In episode 108 of Game Design Unboxed: Inspiration to Publication, we chat with Connie Vogelmann about her design Apiary. What started as her journey as a playtester for Stonemaier Games, quickly dominoed into an invitation to a designer day where she showcased Apiary and ultimately led to it being signed. Connie shares the lessons she learned along the way, including the tools she used for prototyping and how tweaking the theme to "bees in space" helped refine the game's mechanics. Connie and Danielle discuss other topics including the advantages of working with large publishers with access to blind playtest audiences, the importance of filtering playtester feedback, the impact of online feedback (including the good, the bad, and the memes), and the lessons she's learned about rapid prototyping, efficiency, and keeping your sanity through the many iterations of game design. And if you were wondering, yes, she actually did do beekeeping for a bit! Featuring: Connie Vogelmann - Guest Danielle Reynolds - Host

Welcome to another Halloween episode with Dancing with the Bards! This month Will, Larry, and Brooke are joined by Stephen to cover the worker placement game Apiary, by Stonemaier Games.
The seemingly endless lands lay in front of us. Ahead of us, we could see a small village where cute little dragons were tending stores. To our left, people were playing cards, closely watched by a row of playing cards and a rather angry-looking queen. Above us floated different spaceships, some delivering their wares to the small village, while others were expanding the land with new sections. What we saw were the amazing Rolling Realms Redux by Jamey Stegmaier and Karel Titeca from Stonemaier Games. This week on Excelsior Journeys, host & producer George Sirois sits down with Jamey Stegmaier, co-founder of the St. Louis-based tabletop game publisher Stonemaier Games. For over a decade, Jamey and his team have released games such as Expeditions, Scythe, Rolling Realms, and more, while pushing the possibilities of design & execution beyond the typical roll-and-play dynamics we have known for decades. But instead of keeping their winning formula to themselves, Jamey has consistently shared his wisdom on YouTube so others can be inspired to get into game design and avoid the pitfalls discussed in his videos. In Episode 13, we review Wyrmspan by Stonemaier Games and discuss our first, second, and third impressions of the game. To start off the episode, we chat about what's bringing us joy: Nucleum (x2), Revive (x2), and sharing the love of board games with others. Set in the modern day, you are building a sanctuary for dragons by excavating caves in order to entice dragons in this tableau and engine building game. By exploring the caverns and playing cards, you gain resources, cards, eggs, and advancement on the Dragon Guild for additional benefits–make sure you are keeping an eye on end round scoring! With many similarities to Wingspan, comparisons are made throughout our discussion, and we all land in different caverns regarding our preferences. Two things we can agree on are needing answers about what kind of meat we're using to entice our dragons and whose milk are we feeding to the hatchlings? Let us know your thoughts on Wyrmspan (and Wingspan!) on instagram @boardgamehomies
This week we review Wingspan Asia. This expansion is standalone - meaning if you play most of your games with just one other person...this is the version you want to buy! Don't waste your money on the $60 big version of Wingspan...just buy this one instead. If you want to play Wingspan with more than 5 players, this game is also a must for the new Flock Mode! If you want the game for solo play...pass on it. Listen to the episode for more information along with a dark story and stick with us all the way to the end for a great discussion about Meat Mountain and Dan turning into a sandwich! So we brought her and Elizabeth Hargrave back to interrogate them about Wyrmspan, the new dragon-themed sequel to Elizabeth's now-classic and award-winning Wingspan! What was it like designing a new game under the Wingspan name? How much did Connie and Elizabeth work together? And what counts as a dragon anyway? Plus, the two have been busy on the convention circuit, so we discuss various board gaming shows and which ones we enjoy the most. Timeline: 4:19 - Going Analog's game pick: Wroth. 9:11 - Connie and Elizabeth's game pick: Knarr. 16:10 - Going Analog's topic: Wyrmspan's development. 33:35 - Elizabeth and Connie's topic: Our favorite gaming events each year.
