On this episode of The Daily Herold, Jon Herold is joined by Congressman Pat Harrigan for a candid and surprisingly in-depth discussion about the inner workings of Congress, legislative dysfunction, and what it's really going to take to push President Trump's “one big beautiful bill” through both chambers. Harrigan, a former Green Beret and first-time Congressman, doesn't hold back, describing the pace of government as “galactic to glacial,” while explaining the delicate balancing act behind building consensus, curbing spending, and codifying Trump's agenda before time runs out. Jon presses hard on topics like election integrity, foreign lobbying, dual citizenship in Congress, and whether campaign funding influences loyalty. Harrigan holds his own, discussing term limits, national security threats from China, and a pending bill based on Trump's reciprocity doctrine, prohibiting foreign land ownership in the U.S. unless Americans can buy land in those countries. After the interview, Jon pivots to news highlights, including Trump's new reciprocal trade agreement with the UK, speculation around his upcoming “big announcement,” a potential Medicare drug price reform plan, and the DOJ's invocation of state secrets in the controversial El Salvador deportation case. He also covers FBI Director Kash Patel's recent child trafficking crackdown, ongoing Epstein document delays, and the historic selection of Cardinal Robert Prevost as the first American pope. Packed with straight talk, political insight, and sharp analysis, this episode pulls back the curtain on what's moving in D.C.—and what's not.
Former NRL referee Bill Harrigan feels common sense needs to be taken into account when determining the severity of high tackles. It follows round eight of the competition, where 18 players were sin-binned, 15 of those for head high contact. One of those was Rabbitohs fullback Latrell Mitchell, who was given his marching orders after a hit on Storm winger Sua Fa'alogo, who appeared to be slipping before the collision. Harrigan points to that incident as one he disagrees with. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If the double-murder of Keitha Morris and John White, two University of Texas sweethearts, had taken place today instead of in 1969, you'd probably know all about it. But for decades, it's been hidden — only unearthed now by Texas Monthly contributor Stephen Harrigan, at the behest of White's sister. Harrigan was at UT and even met White just before the murders occurred, but felt almost embarrassed that the city and Longhorns seemed to move on so quickly from such a traumatic incident. Harrigan joins host Nikki DaVaughn to talk about what happened to the couple, whether justice was served when the killer was caught, and why Harrigan, a prolific and award-winning author and screenwriter, loves working in Austin. And, just a note, that you might have already guessed, this interview touches on some explicit topics. After years of military service, and long before running for Congress, Rep. Pat Harrigan, R-N.C., and his wife started a family and focused on growing their business in North Carolina. The couple had “nothing to do with politics until Afghanistan came crashing down” in 2021. Watching Afghanistan fall so quickly back into the hands of the terrorists that Harrigan had fought to defeat during his military service was one of the reasons Harrigan says he decided to run for Congress. “Our politicians failed us,” he said. “Our military leaders failed us. And at some point, you just step back and you realize, if we're structurally so weak that we would lose Afghanistan the way that we lost it, we're just asking our adversaries to attack us.” “I really do believe that the way that we left Afghanistan condemned the next generation of Americans to conflict,” Harrigan added. “And I want to do everything that I can possibly do here in Washington to deter that next conflict that I think is very likely to happen. And in the event we are not able to deter it, I want to set the conditions to win it because there's no substitute for winning.” Harrigan's passion for strengthening the U.S. defense industrial base began to take form during his years of military service, going back to when he was 23 and found himself in Afghanistan overseeing about 350 Americans, Afghans, and expatriates at a small combat outpost. The position was “very difficult,” Harrigan says, but also a “very rewarding leadership experience that really shaped a lot of who I am today.” Harrigan, a graduate of West Point, returned to Afghanistan in 2015 after becoming a Green Beret. The congressman joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” just one month into his term to discuss how the Trump administration can restore U.S. military readiness, and decrease wasteful use of military resources that is adding to the U.S. national debt.
